INDOOR YARD SALE

Boone Area Library, 129 N. Mill St., Birdsboro, will hold an indoor yard sale on Saturday, Jan. 11, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The library will provide the tables. Vendors may reserve as many tables as they need. Hot dogs and beverages will be available for purchase. All proceeds from table sales and food will benefit the library. To reserve a table, readers may stop by the library with their payment. Payments may also be made online for an additional fee by visiting www.facebook.com/boonearealibrary and selecting Events. Future yard sales will take place on Saturdays, Feb. 8 and March 14.

Veterans Receive Christmas Presents By Francine Fulton

Thanks to the efforts of local individuals and organizations, veterans who reside at the Coatesville Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center had some extra holiday cheer this Christmas. The 10th annual Christmas Gift Wrapping Extravaganza, organized by David’s Drive 831 (DD831), was held on Dec. 13 at the VA’s Great Hall. During the event, approximately 200 volunteers wrapped 1,000 boxes that were distributed to veterans in need. The boxes were filled with various necessities, such as shampoo, toothbrushes and reusable water bottles, as

Nantmeal United Methodist Church, 359 Nantmeal Road, Glenmoore, will host its free monthly community luncheon on Saturday, Jan. 11, from noon to 2 p.m. This month’s menu will feature meatball sandwiches, tossed salad, baked ziti and dessert. will hold a Science Saturday for youths ages 8 to 14 on Saturday, Jan. 18, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Government Services Center, 601 Westtown Road, West Chester. The topic will be Game Changers. Participants will learn how to use computer science to create games and solve problems through physical activities and puzzles. Separate fees have been set for 4-H members and nonmembers. The Knights of Columbus 13451 will host a free throw competition on Saturday, Jan. 11, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the gymnasium at Our Lady of Lourdes, 150 Water St., New Holland. The event is open to all, and teams are welcome. There is no fee to participate. Winners in categories for participants who are ages 9 to 14 as of Jan. 1 can advance to competitions at the district, regional, and state levels. Shoppers Invited To Church Thrift Shop By Francine Fulton

An assortment of housewares, including small appliances, candles, pots and pans, dishes, lamps, home decor and holiday decorations, as well as jewelry and books, can all be found at Coventryville United Methodist Church’s thrift shop, which is open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the second and

last Saturdays of each month. This month, the shop will be open for business on Jan. 11 and 25. Items in the thrift store, which are donated by the congregation and community members, are new or gently used and are displayed in a boutiquelike setting. Donations are accepted during the shop’s operating hours only. Due to space limitations, the shop does not accept large electronics, including televisions, exercise equipment, and large furniture. Other items that are not permitted to be sold in the thrift store include stuffed animals, pillows and mattresses. “We (accept) everything from housewares to toys to jewelry,” said volunteer See Thrift Shop pg 5

Hopewell UMC Dishes Up Free Christmas Dinner By Francine Fulton

Hopewell United Methodist Church (UMC) in Downingtown opened its doors on Dec. 25 to offer a free Christmas Day dinner to the community. This was the seventh year that church members have served the meal.

According to church member and event organizer Becky Bennington, this year’s dinner was one of the largest ever held at the church. “We had 110 register to attend, including volunteers,” she noted. The Turner family started DD831 following the sudden passing of David Turner Jr. from a suspected cardiac arrhythmia in December 2009. David worked at the Coatesville VA and had a desire to help veterans in need. “David’s wish was to help veterans that needed assistance at the VA when he worked here.
