Wiederseim To Sell Collection Of Ed And Carol Stoudt Of Stoudts’ Black Angus Brewery and Pub Sale To Take Place In Phoenixville On July 24

This is a vintage Wurlitzer juke box.

Wiederseim Associates is pleased to offer the private collection of Carol and Ed Stoudt for auction on Saturday, July 24, at 9 a.m.

The sale includes the contents of the legendary Stoudt’s Black Angus Restaurant and Brewery in Adamstown, Pa., as well as Ed and Carol’s private collection from their home. After over 30 years in business, Ed and Carol have sold the business and are seeking their next adventure.

The couple opened the Black Angus Antique Mall along with the restaurant and beer garden in the 1980s. Business was good. Why not open a brewery? Based on German beers brewed in the Reinheitsgebot tradition, the couple opened the brewery in 1987, with Carol becoming the first female brewmaster in the U.S. since Prohibition.

Through the years, the couple traveled and collected extensively

for their business and home. They assembled items such as Black Forest carved furniture (including two tall case clocks), whimsical circus novelties, Art Nouveau brass chandeliers for the beer hall, carousel horses and an unusual carousel

running rooster, vintage posters, a large collection of German steins, a restored 1932 Auburn Convertible and a 1937 Ford Woody, partially restored, all of which will be in the July 24 sale.

“If you’ve ever been to Stoudt’s, you’ll be very familiar with the items in this sale and won’t want to miss it. Their Oktoberfests were the best! Ed in his lederhosen leading the procession, the beer hall with great German food and the German band,” said Ted Wiederseim, auctioneer and owner of Wiederseim Associates Inc. “The Stoudt sale will be our first live sale in over a year, and we’re very excited about getting back to business as usual.”

Bidding will be live/in-person as well as live online through Bidsquare, Invaluable and Liveauctioneers. A preview starts Monday, July 19, and runs through Friday, July 23, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

July Is Customer Appreciation Month At The Emporium The Historic Burlington Antiques and Art Emporium in Burlington City, N.J., will continue its year-long celebration of 20 years in business with Customer Appreciation Month all July. The Emporium will give away three gift certificates at the end of the month. Three lucky customers will have a chance to win a $50, $25, or $15 gift certificate to the multidealer shop. Brimfield Returns At Full Strength For July Brimfield Antiques Week, the world-famous antiques markets in Brimfield, Mass., will return Tuesday to Sunday, July 13 to 18, at a full-strength capacity, meaning all shows/fields are participating during their traditional times for this weeklong event. Lori Faxon, co-owner of Tuesday’s opening field Dealers Choice and Faxon’s Midway, said “Bookings for our shows are very strong for July.” Her comments were echoed by all of the show field owners interviewed.

Freimuth chooses the colors for the quilt tops from the many patterns in her room full of donated fabrics. The group accepts donations of cotton-weight fabric, and Freimuth visits a fabric outlet for backing material. “We tie quilts,” she explained.

Freimuth creates the layout and pattern for a quilt for other group members to sew at home. When the group meets, members put the front and batting together, and another group member uses a sewing machine located at the church to sew the binding.

Freimuth estimates it takes about 10 hours to complete a quilt. In 2014, the group made 135 quilts. In comparison, for 2020, after not meeting due to COVID-19 restrictions, the group completed 43 quilts. In 2018, four members of the quilters visited the Cover Girls, a quilting group associated with Bay Shore Lutheran Church, located in Whitefish Bay, Wis. Several years before, the Cover Girls had been trying to revitalize their quilting group, and when they found a photo on the internet of the Trinity quilts displayed in the church, they noticed a similarity in the churches and used the photo to promote their group. They sent the Trinity Quilters a copy with a note in 2016, and a friendship was born. Freimuth reported that during the 2018 visit, the Trinity group enjoyed a luncheon and a show-and-tell of Bay Shore quilts. The two groups also discussed production methods.

Because each box of quilts is barcoded, the group knows where the quilts have been shipped. “We know our quilts were in Beirut, Lebanon, when the port blew up (in August 2020),” said Freimuth, who noted that the group thought the quilts were lost.

Instead, 25,000 quilts were found in the one concrete building left standing. “Our quilts were immediately used,” said Freimuth.

It began when Barbara Caruana was assistant pastor at Trinity Lutheran Church, 221 E. Main St., New Holland, in 2003. “She wanted quilts to give to those she visited who were ill,” recalled Karin Freimuth, who said that three quilters worked together to create the quilts Caruana requested.

From that humble beginning, a group of about 15 quilters has now sent nearly 1,500 quilts through Lutheran World Relief to places as far away as Angola, Honduras, Pakistan, and Peru. The Trinity Lutheran Quilters meet each Tuesday from 10 a.m. to noon at the church. Until 2020, they averaged about 100 quilts per year. Each October, the completed quilts are hung over the church pews and blessed before being taken to Bergstrasse Lutheran Church in Ephrata to be trucked to New Windsor, Md., and shipped to locations around the world.

Ashley Traband, from Honey Brook, graduated from Coastal Carolina University, Conway, S.C., during its inperson commencement ceremony on Aug. 6.

Traband received a degree in management.

Attendees of 106th Pennsylvania Farm Show may celebrate the centennial of the Pennsylvania Co-Operative Potato Growers and enjoy local potato products, including in the PA Preferred Food Court and at the Farmer’s Market in the Main Expo Hall. The Farm Show will take place from Saturday, Jan. 8, to Saturday, Jan. 15, at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex and Expo Center, 2300 N. Cameron St., Harrisburg.

The PA Preferred Food Court in the GIANT Expo Hall will also be open from

noon to 9 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 7.

“The Co-Operative is excited to be back in person at this year’s show with our Pennsylvania Farm Show traditions such as the state’s favorite potato doughnuts, fresh cut french fries, and delicious baked potatoes,” said Nathan Tallman, executive director of the Pennsylvania Co-Operative Potato Growers Inc. “For the first time, we are offering sour cream, cheddar cheese, and bacon as toppings for the famed baked potatoes. We have also added potato pierogies boiled in butter and

onions to the lineup of potato favorites in the PA Preferred Food Court.”

The Co-Operative will again be featured in the Pennsylvania Farm Show Farmer’s Market as part of the Pennsylvania Farm Show. The market highlights a variety of agricultural products for visitors to sample.

The market stands, located in the Main Expo Hall of the complex, will be open beginning Jan. 8 and will operate throughout the entire show. “ Visitors will have the opportunity to meet and talk with our local potato growers at the stand, as well as the

The potato doughnuts, french fries, and baked potatoes can be enjoyed by stopping at the PA Preferred Food Court and the Food Annex in the Main Expo Hall, while the potato pierogies will only be available at the PA Preferred Food Court.

Visitors can also learn different ways to prepare potatoes at the Culinary Connection Stage in the Main Expo Hall during Tater Tuesday on Jan. 11. After each cooking demonstration, visitors will be able to taste samples and pick up a free PA Preferred cookbook, which includes recipes to be featured throughout the Farm Show week.

Collegium Charter School (CCS), 435 Creamery Way, Exton, recently announced that construction on its new Performing Arts Center (PAC) is now complete.

On Nov. 12, CCS founders, employees, students, board of trustees members and local dignitaries gathered to celebrate at a ribbon cutting and dedication ceremony.

The theater within the PAC is dedicated to the late Jeffrey W. Dean, CCS’s former director of technology and board of trustees president.

The girls, nicknamed “pageant sisters,” visited Hickory House on Dec. 5 to complete the community outreach project. “We dropped off cards for the senior citizens that were hand signed by each of the girls,” said Maille. “Then we decorated two trees outdoors and we did window painting with (images) of Christmas trees and stockings.”

The girls met through a Facebook page created by Maille’s mother, Megan.

Megan is also friends with Jennifer Dunbar, who works at Hickory House and arranged the visit.

This is the second time that the pageant sisters have visited Hickory House to decorate for Christmas. Maille and a group of girls also distributed valentines and painted Valentine’s Day messages on the windows at the nursing home last February. On all of these occasions, the girls had to remain outside because of COVID-19 restrictions. “ We had one resident Margie - who we knew from the last time. She was watching us through the window, and we took a photo with her,” Maille pointed out.

Readers learned about local residents who were color blind but were able to see color for the first time thanks to special glasses developed by EnChroma, a company based out of Berkeley, Calif., that produces eyewear for color blindness and low vision. The glasses were unveiled during a ceremony held at the Village Library of Morgantown on June 26. “Colors come up every day, so it’s an opportunity to communicate with people in a language you have never been able to speak,” said Randy Litwin, one of the recipients of the glasses.

Twin Valley High School (TVHS) was able to hold an in-person graduation ceremony on June 5 at FirstEnergy Stadium in Reading. During the event, TVHS principal William Clements listed the accomplishments of the Class of 2021, including awards and honors won by students in FFA and Technology Students of America, being able to present a school musical and other performances despite the pandemic and the achievements of student artists and student-athletes.

He reported that the school Mini-THON collected more

than $30,000 to help the fight to end pediatric cancer, which is a school record.

People who were highlighted in 2021 include new Boone Area Library director Ashley Allen; Lionel McCulloch of Morgantown, a student at West Chester University (WCU) who earned an award for completing the WCU yearbook in 2021 despite the fact that WCU classes were held virtually; and firefighter Steve Dragon from the BirdsboroUnion Fire Department, who published his second children’s book, “Were You Born a Dragon Too?” The area’s three libraries Honey Brook Community Library, the Boone Area Library of Birdsboro and the Village Library of Morgantown - continued to offer programming in 2021 despite limitations caused by the pandemic.

The store is operated by an all-volunteer resale shop committee comprising approximately 25 volunteers. “We are open for donations on Mondays, and during that time, we have a crew of volunteers that accepts the donations, unpacks them, prices them and shelves them,” said Guthrie. “We have a dedicated group of volunteers. In 2018, they won (Tel Hai’s) Volunteer of the Year award.”

Since items sold at the store are all donated, all profits go to the Care Assurance Fund. “Our benevolent fund is there to help residents who have outlived their financial resources.

It helps cover the cost of their services should they run out of money,” said Guthrie, noting that a resale shop has operated at Tel Hai since 1997. “It has contributed over a half million dollars to the fund to date.

Prior to the pandemic, we had a record year of (earning) $48,000 in 2019. We are slowly getting back to that. The volunteers take pride in what we raise. They are responsible for that (money) going into the care fund.”

Guthrie said the store is beneficial to Tel Hai residents, the community and the volunteers. “We are a service

Brandywine YMCA Names New Executive Director

“ W hen I think of the YMCA as a wellness facility, there is so much more than coming to work out,” stated Jess Rigo, who was recently named the executive director of the Brandywine YMCA in Coatesville. “It’s about your mental health and physical well-being, being connected to community and having a safe place where kids can come after school. Wellness is that whole mind-bodyspiritual connection that we do so well that goes beyond coming in and walking on a treadmill.”

Rigo has served in numerous leadership roles across several YMCA associations and worked for 15 years in the mental health field. “My ultimate goal has been to return to the Brandywine Y, which I’ve always considered my home branch,” Rigo said, noting that the interview process began in August and her start day was in October.

She worked at the Brandywine branch parttime from 2010 to 2015 and at the Lancaster Family YMCA, which is now the YMCA of the Roses.

After that, she spent the last five years at the Spring Valley YMCA in Limerick.
