Owners should look for any worn or broken cords and replace any defected lights. When stringing lights, individuals should always work with at least one other person. This makes it safe for homeowners who must climb ladders to string lights on especially tall trees and/or on their home exteriors. People should avoid working outdoors in inclement weather. The weather during the holiday season can sometimes be unpleasant or unpredictable. People should check the forecast before stringing exterior lights to ensure Mother Nature will not pose a threat. They should avoid hanging lights if the forecast predicts wet, icy, or windy conditions that can make ladders unstable. Individuals should turn lights off when going to bed and/or leaving the house. Interior and exterior holiday lights should not be left on when no one is home

A fundraiser, “Coffee for Karen,” is taking place at Country Table Restaurant, 740 E. Main St., Mount Joy. Through Christmas Eve, Monday, Dec. 24, donations are being accepted at the eatery to benefit Karen Kroeck. Kroeck has been employed at Country Table for 19 years. Just over four years ago, she was diagnosed with the early stages of vocal cord cancer. Following this diagnosis, the plan was for her to undergo radiation five days a week for six weeks. She went for her radiation appointment every afternoon after her shift at work. She continued to work six days a

week at two locations, sometimes working 12 to 14 hours a day. At the beginning of 2015, a PET scan showed that her cancer was gone. In the summer of 2016, Kroeck noticed that her voice was becoming weary. After a checkup and another PET scan, she learned that the cancer had returned. When subsequent laser surgery was unsuccessful, she had a laryngectomy (removal of the voice box). By December 2016, she was back at work. In September this year, the cancer returned, and the plan was to remove the tumor and

follow up with radiation and chemotherapy. However, in the time since her previous surgery, Kroek’s husband had become ill and retired from work. This resulted in a change in Kroeck’s insurance policy; complications due to this change delayed the surgery, and the surgery window passed. Kroeck is now planning to pursue radiation and chemotherapy for her treatment. Haunted Lantern Tour To Return With “Mortality Within” in” By Chelsea Peifer

Sara Mimnall and Rebecca Wright chose the theme of “Mortality Within” for Columbia’s Haunted Lantern Tour this year because they wanted to introduce people to a not-often-talked-about aspect of the rivertown’s history. The theme will focus on the disease and poverty that struck Columbia and other communities in earlier days, discussing the presence of pesthouses and sanitariums and how much things have changed. “It shows how people suffered more than they had to because they didn’t have the

Popular characters from past years will also reappear, Wright said, such as William Campbell, a local trapper who died from rabies and is buried in Columbia’s historic Mount Bethel Cemetery. The wedding of Katee Battiste and Timothy Wodarczyk took place on Sept. 8 at Victory Church in Quarryville. Pastor Brett Rush officiated at the 1 p.m. ceremony. The bride is the daughter of Anthony and Tawn Battiste of Holtwood. She graduated from Solanco High School in 2004, Millersville University in 2008, and Eastern Mennonite University in 2013. She is employed by Excentia in Lancaster. The groom is the son of Thomas and Donna Wodarczyk of Lancaster. He graduated from Manheim Township High School in 2009 and Lancaster Bible College in 2014, and he currently attends HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College. He is

employed by LSC in Lancaster. The matron of honor was Rebecca Kropf of Willow Street, and the maid of honor was Abrielle Battiste of Perryville, sister of the bride. Bridesmaids were Cheryl Zalewski of Strasburg and Katie Forry of Lancaster. Serving as best man was Jim Havrilla of Salt Lake City. Groomsmen were Adam Evalt of Lynbrook, Matthew Day of Lancaster, and Jason Shuman of Lancaster. The bride was given in marriage by her parents. The reception was held at Omar Smoker Farm in New Providence. The couple resides in Lancaster.

Thanks to donors in its service area, Northwest EMS (NWEMS) filled three ambulances and a transit van from Pleasant View Retirement Community with toys that it delivered to the Toys for Tots distribution warehouse, the empty Bon-Ton store at Park City. The NWEMS staff members who delivered the toys included EMT Darren Martin, EMT Kenny Barton, paramedic Erle Smith, and EMT Lori Shenk, along with Pleasant View Retirement Community sales and marketing manager Amanda Hall and grounds/facility maintenance employee Jason Hallet.

The donated toys were collected in NWEMS stations in Elizabethtown, Maytown, Manheim, and Brickerville, as well as in the East Donegal Township Municipal Office, Brickerville Fire Company, Esbenshade’s Garden Center, Pleasant View Retirement Community, Masonic Village Farm Market, Manheim Library, and Two Cousin’s Manheim. They were also accepted at the Manheim Lions Club Santa Run and the Manheim Borough tree lighting ceremony. More than 2,000 families from Lancaster County have signed up for assistance from the U.S. Marine Corps Toys for Tots program.

Campaign To Aid Bethesda Mission Indian Echo Caverns in Hummelstown will celebrate the season with decorations and a collection campaign to help the Bethesda Mission in Harrisburg. During the holidays and throughout the winter, Indian Echo Caverns will accept donations of men’s, women’s and children’s socks for Bethesda Mission. While coats, gloves, hats, and other clothing are needed as well, having socks on hand at all times is a necessity. Donations will be collected in the Indian Echo Caverns gift shop.

Gifts Sought To Fight Pediatric Cancer Ryan’s Birthday Party Foundation, a nonprofit organization with the mission to “Help Kids With Cancer Smile,” is currently raising funds for a pediatric brain cancer research grant. The foundation is partnering with Live Like Lukas to provide a matching grant to Nemours AI duPont Children’s Hospital. Nearly 200 people from across Lancaster County attended the eighth annual Pursenalities Party on Nov. 5 at Bent Creek Country Club in Lititz. The silent purse auction event raised $13,325 for the American Heart Association (AHA), a voluntary organization dedicated to building healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke, and the Go Red for Women movement. More than 80 designer purses donated by local individuals and businesses were up for bids while guests enjoyed hors d’oeuvres. Each purse was displayed with information about the individual or business that donated the bag. Proceeds from the Pursenalities Party will support the Go Red for Women campaign and the donation of Infant CPR Anytime kits and other resources to WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital. The event served as a kickoff to the American Heart Association’s annual Go Red for Women campaign, which includes the celebration of National Wear Red Day on Friday, Feb. 1, 2019, and the Lancaster Go Red for Women Luncheon on Thursday, May 2, 2019. By requesting that between one and two inches be removed from the bottom of the tree at the time of purchase, buyers are ensuring their trees will be able to absorb the water they will need to make it through the season when they get home. To prevent the base of the tree from drying out, the tree should be placed in water the moment it gets home. Freshly cut trees may initially need the water in their tree stands filled in the morning and then again in the evening. As the season progresses trees likely will not need their stands filled more than once per day. The tree should be placed away from heat sources. Placing trees away from heat sources, such as radiators, fireplaces, heating vents, and lights, reduces the likelihood that trees will dry out and also reduces the risk of fire.

The Optimist Club of Lancaster encourages area high school students to write a 600- to 700-word essay exploring the phrase “When All the World’s Problems Are Solved, Is Optimism Still Necessary?” as part of the Optimist Essay Contest for the 2018-19 school year. The contest is open to all Lancaster County students under age 19 as of Oct. 1, 2018. The winner will be awarded a cash prize on the local level. The winning essay will then be sent to the district competition, where a scholarship will be awarded to the best of the entries. Michael R. Molla was installed as the third president of Pennsylvania College of Art & Design (PCA&D) in a special ceremony on Oct. 30 at the Ware Center as part of a day of celebration for PCA&D’s engagement in Lancaster city. In the morning, all PCA&D students, plus faculty, staff members and trustees, took part in PCA&D & Lancaster: Creative Community Engagement. The participants worked on 17 engagement projects using art and design in problem solving to assist area community organizations. The event was bookended by a kickoff breakfast, featuring community engagement tips from Michael Bunting of Lancaster’s The Stone School, and a celebratory lunch. The presidential installation ceremony in the afternoon began with a parade of regalia-robed faculty, staff members, students and trustees making their way from PCA&D to the Ware Center. The ceremony focused on PCA&D’s history and future, and

it featured Molla’s chosen theme of “&,” the ampersand, a symbol of forging, building and deepening connections. The program reintroduced PCA&D to the Lancaster community and arts community and told the story of the importance of arts in the community. Special speakers were Deana Haggag, president and CEO of United States Artists; Fred Lazarus IV, president emeritus of Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA); and the Hon. Danene Sorace, mayor of Lancaster city. The event also included a video message from Samuel “Sammy” Hoi, president of Maryland Institute College of Art. Afterward, the PCA&D family and members of the Lancaster community gathered at PCA&D for a celebration that included food from the many traditions represented in Lancaster, along with music. All elements of the celebration related specifically to Lancaster. Molla said that his alma mater, Anna Maria College in

Paxton, Mass., was like PCA&D in being a small, focused, personal college that emphasizes individual student’s needs, active learning and mentorship. Molla served at MICA for a total of 26 years and led the college in the areas of student affairs, operations and strategic initiatives. As the associate vice president of student affairs, he launched MICA’s first residence life program and established a student affairs division for the college, which included on-site counseling and health care services, as well as diversity and safety initiatives. As vice president of operations, Molla was responsible for the development of the Campus Master Plan, including the design and construction of resident facilities; numerous academic, studio and shop spaces; a center for graduate education; and, most recently, an undergraduate design center. In the vice president of strategic initiatives position, Molla was responsible for strengthening the

During the afternoon, checks were presented for $23,000 to Clare House and for $22,500 to the Chip Miller Amyloidosis Foundation (CMAF). During the year, LCCC members sold giveaway drawing tickets for a new 2019 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray. The proceeds from the ticket sale minus the costs of the car were split between the Clare House and CMAF. The car was awarded to Chris and Donna Giles of Conisteo, N.Y., during the annual Corvettes at Carlisle event in late August. LCCC governor Clyde Mooney presented

checks to Eva Dombrowski, Clare House executive director; Valerie Kissinger of Clare House board of directors; and Judy Miller, Chip Miller’s widow and assistant treasurer of the CMAF. The club has organized numerous car giveaway drawings in the past, but after a gap it restarted its efforts last year. In 2016 and 2017, the club distributed more

than $51,000 each year to the same two charities. Along with the giveaway drawing for the car, the club also has other shows and events through the year. NALC Chapter Delivers Donations “Our Christmas Miracle” Slated On Veterans Day, Nov. 11, members of National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) Branch 273 made a special delivery to Veterans’ Victory House in Lancaster. The NALC members delivered donations they had collected in a drive for Veterans’ Victory House. The union collected new household items, including sheets, towels, dishes, and utensils, along with monetary donations from its active and retired

letter carriers. The Veterans’ Victory House is located at Tabor Community Services’ Transitional Living Center (TLC) in Lancaster.
