Young Professionals Group Seeks New Members BY CATHY MOLITORIS

Starting out in the workforce can be tough. Manheim Young Professionals is hoping to make things a little easier. “The goal of our group is to help connect people,” said Noah Martin, who created the group in March of 2019 with fellow Manheim business owner Michaela McDonald. “We got together and started talking about a way to boost community

excitement and promote good vibes in our little town,” recalled Martin, who is a real estate agent with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices and an investment adviser with Primerica Financial Services. “Our group is here to help people connect, grow and serve. We are striving to connect local young professionals, provide opportunities for education, challenge our peers to do their best and encourage them to serve the Manheim community.” See Professionals pg 2

Manheim Central Seniors Recognized eniors of the Month from Manheim Central High School were recently recognized. The honorees for November are Paul Hurst and Cassandra Ginder, and the honorees for December are Kade Kegarise and Erin Greiner. The Manheim Women’s Club sponsors the Girls of the Month and recognizes them at its April meeting. The Boys of the Month are sponsored by the Rotary Club of Manheim. Seniors of the Month are chosen by the professional staff of the high school based on academic achievement, character and involvement within the school and community. Paul, 18, is the son of Troy and Katerina Hurst of Manheim. He takes part in theater activities. Paul plans to attend college to further his knowledge in the computer systems technology field.

is active in football, track and field, basketball and the MC Science Club. His volunteer activities include trash cleanup around town, teardown of the farm show and cleanup of the book sale, and he also helps with the children’s nursery at Manheim Brethren in Christ. Kade plans to attend college to study architectural engineering. Erin, 17, is the daughter of Scott and Heather Greiner of Lititz. Erin is involved in the science club, medical career club and health care career academy. She was honored as a First Team All-Star for soccer. Outside school, she plays soccer for the PA Classics Academy team. She is active with the youth group at her church and sometimes volunteers with this group. Erin plans to attend college with the goal of becoming a physician assistant. She also intends to play soccer in college.

On roads throughout central Pennsylvania, bicycle riders are changing lives one ride at a time. That’s the philosophy behind Lifecycles, a Wrightsville-based organization that works to build young men and women of character. “We combine mentoring and a spiritual aspect with a vehicle that brings people together, which is longdistance cycling,” said Lee DeRemer, director of the organization. This past year, the group included 74 teens and 63 adult volunteer leaders, and Lifecycles is thriving

Cassandra, 17, is the daughter of Dale and Lisa Ginder of Manheim. She is a member of the concert band, jazz band, marching band and choir as well as the girls’ tennis team. She is a member of the Spanish Honor Society, where she was secretary last year, and the Spanish Club, where she was treasurer last year. Cassandra has received honors in the National Honor Society and Tri-M Music Honor Society, and she won three bronze medals in the National Spanish Exam. She is involved with Amnesty International. Cassandra volunteers with the youth group, praise band, and choir at Ruhl’s United Methodist Church. She is a member of Spinnin’ Spurs 4-H Club. In addition to the meetings, the group organizes fundraisers and community events, including recently complet-

ing a workday cleaning up the square in downtown Manheim, and manages an Instagram page called I Love Manheim. The Manheim Young Professionals group is part of the Manheim Area Chamber of Commerce. W hile the organization has the word “young” in it, it’s really open to anyone in Manheim, Martin said, noting that the group is looking to grow its membership. “We want to be inclusive,”

despite the pandemic. Although the group had to postpone a few of its longer rides due to COVID-19, participants still enjoyed weekly rides throughout the county from April through October. Currently, the group has teams in Lititz, Marietta, Landisville and New Holland, with opportunities for more teams as well. DeRemer said the goal of Lifecycles extends far beyond honing riding skills. He sees the group as a way to reach teens through a unique avenue. “Teens get talked at an awful lot, so we try to do something different,” he noted. “We listen a lot. We’ll have a short talk while we’re stretching and getting ready to ride, and we’ll hit them with some good ideas to think about. Those ideas will bounce around in their heads while they are riding for the next hour and a half.” Teenagers tend to open up during the silence and great things can start happening, he said. “The teens start talking so now you know what’s on their mind rather than sharing what you think matters to them,” he explained. “You’ll find teens have a lot to share.” DeRemer and his wife, Marcie, incorporated Lifecycles in 2014. The program is open to youths ages 12 to 18, and graduates are encouraged to stay on as mentors. Participants in the faith-based program benefit from the physical challenge of riding, as well as the opportunity for spiritual growth and social support, he said. “We meet the teens where they are,” he explained. “We don’t focus on troubles at home or school. There are other people in their lives for that. We want to build a posi-

Residents Win Wool Garment Competition Local residents were recently honored in the Pennsylvania Make It With Wool Contest. The state contest was held in October, and a virtual fashion show and awards program was held on Oct. 31. Due to the pandemic, the contest was held in a virtual and mail-in format. Contes-

tants shipped or hand-delivered their ensembles. They also provided a video that showed them modeling their garments and answering a few questions typical of in-person judging. They also provided still photos of their ensemble. Each entrant’s ensemble was flat-judged and then judged while being modeled by the entrant on video. Judging was based on poise, construction of the garment, fit and wearability, and promotion of the versatility of wool. The judges were Debby Spence, a dressmaker in Lancaster, and Pat Hetrick, a retired family and consumer sciences educator from Ephrata.

Winners included Julia Schreiner, first place in the Adult category, for people age 25 and up; Veronique Riviello, second place, Pre-Teen category, for children age 12 and under; Alexandria Neff, third place, Junior category, for youths ages 13 to 16; and Sheila Martin, third place, Adult. First-place winners will send their garments, with photos and a video, for national judging in January. The objectives of the contest are to promote the beauty and versatility of wool fabrics and yarns; to encourage personal creativity in sewing, knitting, and crocheting with

wool fabrics and yarns; to recognize creative skills; and to develop life skills, including being responsible for one’s self, being a good sport, accepting judges’ decisions, and learning about and appreciating diversity. Each entrant constructed at least one wool or wool-blend garment using knitting, crocheting, and/or sewing skills. Schreiner, from Penryn, created a two-piece ensemble. The Stoners were married on Nov. 11, 1950, at the bride’s home in Landisville. They are the parents of Donald, husband of Clara Martin, Landisville; Jean, wife of Dale Hackman, Iowa; Joyce,

The vest pattern was cut from an actual garment rather than a commercial pattern. Riviello, from Birdsboro, is a first-time participant in Make It With Wool. Mentored by her great-aunt and her grandmother, she made a wool crepe dress. Riviello and her mentors chose to make a navy blue garment, but remove some of the color to create a gradient. Riviello made a practice muslin to test the pattern that they designed together. The dress has facings and a handstitched hem. Neff ’s entry was a threepiece ensemble made as her eighth-year sewing project in the Dauphin County 4-H program. The lined coat is a midnight blue twill with ruffles, invisible pockets, and three buttons in the front. The lined, pleated skirt is made of 95% wool grey fabric and has a zipper closure. For her vest, Neff spun and plied yarn from grey and white Romney and Merino

fleeces. She then wove the fabric into a zig-zag pattern. Martin, of Birdsboro, created a blue coat with a modern silhouette. Schwager said Creme was willing to, on a pro bono basis, go above and beyond to tackle PBA legal matters, despite the time commitment required. For example, Schwager said Creme guided the PBA’s shift from a defined employee pension plan to a market-competitive 401(k) plan. As a long-term member and also chair of the PBA Pension Committee, Schwager said Creme saw the unsustainable climb in expenses for the PBA to remain within its former pension plan. The 401(k) plan with some PBA matching of employee contributions carries less cost and less risk for the PBA and provides employees with greater flexibility in their investment options. In addition to his legal support provided to the PBA, Creme is active in nonprofit community organizations. He has served as board chair of the American Red Cross of the Susquehanna Valley, the Lancaster County Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and Lancaster Catholic High School. He also has served as a member of the Northeast Service Area Resource Council of the American Red Cross and, in that position, he was responsible for coordinating and providing governance as well as planning counsel and advice to Red Cross chapters in the nine states of the northeast United States and in the Caribbean. The award was presented on Nov. 20 during a meeting of the PBA House of Delegates, the policymaking body of the association. Creme is a 1977 graduate of Dickinson College and a 1980 graduate of the Georgetown University Law Center.

Hurst is a professional artist and author from Lancaster County. Growing up in a large Old Order Mennonite family, she spent most of her time teaching

herself art between chores on the family dairy farm. She now owns and operates the Barnyard Art Studio & Gallery on her 40-acre farm in Lancaster, and she travels to share her stories of faith and freedom through chalk talks. On New Year’s Day, the streets of Lancaster County will be filled with motorcyclists, all riding to benefit veterans. The 12th annual charity ride will kick off at 1 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 1, 2021, at the Walter S. Ebersole American Legion Post 185, 255 W. Main St., Mount Joy. Registration for the event will open at 10 a.m. Proceeds from the event benefit veterans who use services at the Lebanon VA Medical Center. “Last year, we raised $33,000,” said Tyler Stumpf, ride organizer. “Over the years, we have raised $193,000.” Money is raised through the entry fee for the ride as well as sales of Tshirts and patches. Typically, the event would also include a meal after the ride and a silent auction, but that has changed this year due to COVID-19 restrictions. Instead, organizers are looking for donations of items for veterans or financial contributions. “The event will be held completely outside this year,” Stumpf noted. “We’ll have a trailer in the parking lot to collect things for veterans like toiletries, stamps and pre-paid phone cards.” The 25-mile ride follows a route along the Susquehanna River and concludes at the Elizabethtown American Legion Post 329, 240 N. Hanover St. Proceeds from the ride are wholly used for veteran services, with no money going to administrative costs or overhead, said Nicole Tipping, who will be participating in the event. “Since donations will not be as big this year without the auction, we are really encouraging people to bring items for the vets or to make a financial donation,” she stated. Local businesses are also encouraged to donate to the event. The ride, which is open to the

public, is not just for motorcyclists. While smaller this year, the live Nativity will be staged outdoors where all can view it. Traditional Christmas music will be presented throughout the evening by Eric Fisher and Breanna Hiller. Bergman said that while the current health situation gave organizers pause, they found they were able to persevere. “The biggest challenge this year was to keep as much as we could of the activities … for our guests,” said Bergman. A determined group of volunteers, including Ginny Ludwig, Mel Miller, Paul Miller, Savannah Bergman, and members of Girl Scout Troop 70246, spent time bagging hundreds of items for guests. Gift bags will be available for children and adults, and the bags will include crafts and cookie decorating items. This year’s Simply Christmas will include a Gift of the Magi shop, which allows children to shop for two adults in their lives. The shop will be set up grab-bag style and divided into gifts that are better for men and for women. LUMC has also planned a few surprises to keep the event exciting. The free event will be held rain or shine or snow. Attendees are asked to enter at the Market Street entrance closest to the Dean Saylor Linear Park. A press release Bergman distributed for the church begins with the words, “Now more than ever, people need a healthy dose of hope and love.” In response, LUMC will host its annual Simply Christmas Celebration as an outdoor drive-through event on Sunday, Dec. 13, from 4 to 7:30 p.m. Simply Christmas is an old-fashioned celebration of the birth of Christ. Since the beginnings of the annual event in 2011, LUMC has endeavored to invite neighbors in the community to join in a celebration of the Savior’s birth that focuses on taking time away from the hustle of the season. “It truly is meant to be an evening of giving to our neighbors in the community, just as Christ’s love is free to all who receive it, “ said Bergman, who noted that the supplies and staffing for the event are gifted to the community by members of LUMC. This year, organizers of Simply Christmas struggled with ways to provide a safe event that met the requirements of COVID-19 restrictions. “Although the doors will be closed, hearts will be open,” the press release stated. Wellness Journals were scheduled to be distributed to 1,300 residents living in housing obtained through affordable housing providers in Lancaster and York counties, including senior residents at 27 HDC MidAtlantic affordable housing communities in Dauphin, Lancaster and York counties.
