Deemer Releases “Manheim In The (Not So) Roaring 1920s” By Chelsea Peifer

Henry E. “Hank” Deemer thought that he was finished chronicling some of Manheim’s history after completing his fifth book in 2018, until - lo and behold - he came into possession of more than 175 original editions of the Manheim Sentinel. The bulk of those yellowed newspapers were from the 1920s and had once belonged to well-known general store owner Elias Kready. “I couldn’t resist taking a peek at Manheim in the Roaring ’20s,” said Deemer. Deemer’s newest book,

“Manheim in the (Not So) Roaring 1920s,” is a scrapbook of articles, photographs, and advertisements of that decade through the perspective of the Manheim Sentinel. In the foreword, Deemer notes that he had little idea of what to expect as he pored over the stack of Sentinels. “I think I was so mentally preoccupied with what I knew had been the explosive volatility of that decade from having read reprints of glaring headlines from New York, Philadelphia, Lancaster, and York newspapers,” wrote Deemer. “I found very little of that very violence,

mayhem, and hard times in these Sentinels.” Deemer credits longtime Manheim Sentinel editor Harry Trout with using the weekly newspaper to unite the community of Manheim during the 1920s. “He was a fiend on commerce and went on an editorializing rampage,” said Deemer. “He used his position as owner and editor - along with his state and local connections - to rattle cages in and out of town.” In fact, as Deemer worked on this book, he felt it became somewhat of a tribute to Trout and his long-lasting impact on Manheim. Lifelong Manheim resident Henry E. “Hank” Deemer displays a copy of his sixth book, “Manheim in the (Not So) Roaring 1920s,” which is available to purchase at Longenecker’s Hardware, Sloan’s Pharmacy, and the Historic Manheim Preservation Foundation.

The goal is to create a plaza at the borough’s Veterans Memorial Park, adjacent to the Manheim Central High School stadium. The planned plaza will include flagpoles for the standards of the Army, Navy,
