Add even more festive fun to your Halloween celebration by visiting Teen Central for Light the Night. The event will be held on Friday, Oct. 31, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the parking lot of Teen Central, 15 S. Wolf St., Manheim.
“The event takes place during Manheim’s trick-or-treat hours, and the last few years we have had between 400 to 500 people pass through our parking lot!”

“I think I am most proud of the work that we have done over the years and how we have been able to expand our services and our footprint to serve more people,” reflected Dennis Steiner, president and CEO of VisionCorps, who recently announced his retirement. “That is what our mission is - to empower people who are blind to achieve independence. To me, that is what we are here for.”
Steiner, who started as a VisionCorps case manager in 1984, has 42 years of experience working in the field of blind and low-vision services, including 17 years as president and CEO of VisionCorps. He will be succeeded by Megan Tomsheck effective Friday, Oct. 31.
“I have been blessed to have a great leadership team here. Many of them have been here for quite some time,” Steiner noted. “Megan is an 18-year employee. I have a good mix of longevity and newer people. They are all committed to our mission. They are all passionate about their work and a good team to lead.”

What’s the value of dirt? For the Lancaster County Conservation District, it’s priceless. The organization formed in 1950 with a mission of empowering farmers to maintain and improve the rich, productive soil of Lancaster County through conservation practices. Today, as the group marks its 75th anniversary,
it has expanded its focus to include four more departments beyond agriculture, touching the lives of everyone who calls the county home.
“Coming out of the time period of the Dust Bowl, in the late 1920s and ’30s, there was a national movement to create conservation districts across the country,” said Sallie Gregory, Lancaster County Conservation District
Steiner was responsible for helping to establish new services during his tenure. His accomplishments include introducing youth programming to the agency and mentoring young people; expanding VisionCorps from one facility in Lancaster to additional rehabilitation and employment sites in Adams, Chester, Lebanon and York counties; and increasing the focus of rehabilitation services to include new technology offerings such as smart glasses, magnifiers and apps.

Holiday Bazaar Posted
Oregon Community United Methodist Church, located at 1214 Creek Road, Lititz, will hold its annual holiday bazaar on Saturday, Nov. 15, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Manheim Lions Club To Receive Citation

“In 1950, the county commissioners approved having a conservation district the whole way across Lancaster County,” Gregory said.
The county’s conservation district, which is the largest in the state, now includes departments focused on erosion and sedimentation, watersheds, data and analysis and education.
“The erosion and sedimentation department works with people in development, such as landowners, construction companies or engineers, on any project larger than an acre,” Gregory said, noting that the office reviews work plans to determine how the soil will be maintained prior to construction, during the work and afterward.
The watershed department encourages landowners to maintain their properties to promote water health.

“We all live in a watershed,” Gregory said, adding that our actions could impact the watershed right outside our door or the wider Chesapeake Bay watershed. “This department focuses on ways people can maintain and protect the watershed. Maybe you have a no-mow zone in your yard to encourage pollinators, or you plant native plants to support wildlife.”
For the data and analysis department, the goal is to tell the story of the efforts of the district and share the results with the public so people can understand the work and see the benefits of conservation, she said.
“In the education department, our role is to talk with residents about conservation practices and provide support for teachers and students working with state standards,” she explained, noting that one such effort is the countywide Envirothon program.
The office works collaboratively with numerous organizations in the state, including the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission, the Pennsylvania Game Commission and Lancaster Conservancy.

To promote its watershed work, the district will host the 2025 Lancaster-Lebanon Watershed Forum on Saturday, Nov. 15, from 8:30 a.m. to noon at Millersville University.
“The forum is a free event for volunteers, students, watershed organizations and practitioners to learn and collaborate,” Gregory said. “This year we will hear from Dr. David Bowne at Elizabethtown College about wetland biodiversity

The conservation district also holds an annual tree seedling sale, which opens in February for pickup in April, and hosts a Youth Conservation School in the summer.
“We all impact our natural resources, whether that’s in a positive or a negative way,” Gregory said. “The conservation district is a resource for everyone, because we all use natural resources every day.”

The mission of Teen Central is to encourage and inspire youths through the love of Jesus Christ by providing positive activities; mentoring relationships; and promoting social, intellectual, emotional and spiritual growth, she explained.
“Our youth center is open four days a week for students to attend, and every day we provide free food, fellowship and fun,” Heying continued. “Our regular programming offers students a variety of activities, including sports, gardening, cooking, crafts and games. We have a gym, daily Bible studies, snacks, free meals and, once a month we hold special events that are designed to involve participants in fun, healthy, safe activities.”
All of Teen Central’s programming is provided free to all participants.
Teen Central has held Light the Night for many years, and while some activities may have changed over time, the event’s mission has remained the same.
“The purpose for this evening is to bring the light of Jesus to our neighbors by connecting with and serving those in our community,” Heying said. “We love being able to use our space to bring the community together on a night where most people are already out and about and interacting with each other.”
Heying noted that Light the Night relies on community support to be a success.
“This event wouldn’t be possible without our wonderful volunteers and other partnerships within the community,” she said. “A special thank you to all who contribute to this event, whether it be with their time, resources or prayers and encouragement!”
Heying invites people to come to Light the Night for family fun.
“We have added quite a few new elements and stations this year,” she remarked. “We’ve added more games, a balloon animal station and lots of new prize opportunities. … People can expect a safe and inviting atmosphere to either pass through while trick-or-treating or to stay and enjoy for the entire two hours.”
Holding the event provides benefits to both the nonprofit and the community, she said.
“To see all the smiles being shared and fun being had during this event - it is always worth it and a great motivation to provide this event year after year,” she commented. “We love being able to see the love of Christ spread throughout the night!”
While the event will be held rain or shine, it will be moved to Saturday, Nov. 1, if Manheim Borough changes the date of trick or treat due to severe weather. Safety and Security Seminar Set at East Fairview Church
The United States Concealed Carry Association (USCCA) and Center Mass Training will co-host and conduct a seminar, “Protecting Your House of Worship,” at East Fairview Church, 1187 Fairview Road, Manheim, on Thursday, Oct. 30, from 6 to 8 p.m.

The USCCA/Center Mass Training seminar offers introductory information about how to better protect houses of worship. Attendees will learn how to identify a mass shooter, create an emergency operations plan and how to treat traumatic injuries that may occur.
Attendees will also learn how to better evaluate current levels of security, as well as practical exercises that can be done with team or church members to practice security procedures.

Center Mass Training, Manheim, additional topics covered will include learning how to identify a person who may be planning a mass shooting, determine the steps to create an emergency operations plan, safety considerations, how best to evaluate current church security and how to treat wounded persons after an attack.
John Vastyan, East Fairview’s safety and security director, noted that this event will inaugurate the Central PA Church Security Alliance, a local and regional coalition to serve the needs of houses of worship throughout the region. The purpose of the alliance, explained Vastyan, is to share information, best practices, speakers and training techniques.
Though the event will end at 8 p.m., Vastyan and others will be on hand to answer questions after the program ends. Attendees are encouraged to bring water, note-taking materials and questions.

He added that people can use their phones to shop for any items that they need, including food from the grocery store. “(Technology) has opened up a lot of doors and opportunities for the blind and the visually impaired community,” said Steiner. “I can’t imagine living without my iPhone or computer because it allows a greater degree of independence.”
Steiner and his wife, Candy, reside in Lancaster Township. Steiner said he is looking forward to spending more time with his family and two grandchildren, but he added that he also plans to continue to advocate for the vision impaired.
“I am going to be involved with the agency at some level, doing some public policy work or whatever Megan asks me to do. You don’t spend your whole career and just walk away from an organization like this,” he shared. “I haven’t lost the passion for the work, but it’s time for me to step down and spend some more time with family. I felt like now was the right time.”
“Many people ask me, ‘Why did you stay at one place for so long?’ I love the organization, and I love the community,” he added. “Lancaster, central York and Chester counties are great places to raise a family. VisionCorps has given as much to me as I have given to them. It’s been a great relationship.”
As a visually impaired leader of an organization, Steiner has also set an example for others. “I am a CEO who happens to be blind,” said Steiner. “I want people to recognize that people who are blind can do almost anything that sighted people can do.”

Historic Rock Ford To Present “Persuasion”
Historic Rock Ford, 881 Rock Ford Road, Lancaster, will present “Persuasion” in the rooms of the General Hand Mansion on Fridays, Nov. 14 and 21, and Saturdays, Nov. 15 and 22, at 7 and 8:30 p.m. Performances with matinees will also take place on Sundays, Nov. 16 and 23, at 3 p.m.
The one-act play, inspired by scenes from Jane Austen’s novel, was adapted by Samuel Slaymaker and is intended to provide audiences with the flavor of Austen’s work and wit within the setting of a true Georgian mansion. The Actor’s School is the new creative team for this year’s production.
“Persuasion” relates the story of Anne Elliot, an aristocratic young lady who declines marrying Captain Frederick Wentworth at a youthful age even though she deeply loves him. After a period of seven years, Anne and Wentworth meet again and must resolve their feelings through a series of encounters that are highlighted in the play.
Each performance will be approximately an hour, with scenes taking place on the main floor of the General Hand Mansion. The production is not handicapped-accessible. Guests will be standing during the performance and following the characters from room to room.
