When she was about 5 years old, Maddie Smith wanted to try gymnastics, but her parents - Matt and Diane Smith of Manheim - said no. They thought it would be too expensive and would involve too much travel, so they encouraged her to try taekwondo instead. Joke’s on them. Thanks to her talent on the mat, Maddie has competed all across the country and into Canada in the sport, and she recently returned
from a tournament that marked a career high - and she’s just getting started. Competing in the Taekwondo World Cup in Benidorm, Spain, earlier this month, Maddie earned a silver medal in sparring. She earned the accolade in the individual female age 12 to 14 category for girls weighing 52 to 56 kilograms who had earned belts between four and one. In taekwondo, belt rank rises as the number goes down. Newcomers to the sport start with a “gup,”

Teen Central invites anyone out for trick-or-treat night to stop by the youth center on Saturday, Oct. 31, between 6 and 8 p.m. for Light the Night. The annual event will take place in the Teen Central parking lot, 15 S. Wolf St., Manheim. Held rain or shine, Light the Night will include stations such as popcorn, cotton candy, firepits with s’mores and more. A photo booth will be set up on-site, and people are invited to play games and enjoy free candy, hot dogs, chips, hot chocolate and other treats. People are welcome to stop by or stay to enjoy the entire two hours. “The last few years we have had between 400 and 500 people pass through our parking lot,” said Janelle Heying, Teen Central executive director. “We would love to welcome everyone to this free community event. Whether people are looking for some safe family-friendly fun or are out trick-or-treating and want to swing by, we will be there with plenty of food and activities for all ages.” Tours of the Teen Central building will also be available for people who are interested in learning more about the ministry and its mission. “We are a nonprofit, Christian youth center right here in Manheim,” Heying said. “It is our goal to create a safe and welcoming space for students in grades five through 12 to come and feel at home in our community. Our mission is to encourage and inspire the youth of our town

We leave all of our yarn naturally colored and nondyed so individuals can use the yarn and enjoy the beautiful natural color in their projects and see the exact alpaca that it came from.” I n add i t ion to ya r n , Hoffer Farm will sell wool roving for felting projects, including dryer balls and needle felting, as well as wool pellets for gardens and houseplants. The pellets help retain soil
moisture, replenish nitrogen and provide a natural mulching alternative. All products come from the raw wool processed at the fiber mill, ensuring every part of the wool is put to use. “This process highlights the sustainability that we put forth in our mission at the Hoffer Farm: to be able to use all pieces of the raw wool, let none go to waste and provide a resource for a variety of hobbies,” St. Clair said. Pleasant View 70th anniversar y cookbooks and R ipt ide C ar Wa sh tickets will also be sold at the bazaar. Shoppers who work up an appetite can enjoy a variety of food items. “Our food menu this year features Peters’ pork barbecue, John F. The bazaar is made possible through the support of several sponsors, including Premier S p on s or I nte r ior Fa n cies, which will have a table at the event, and Gold Sponsor Gallagher Lancaster. Proceeds from the bazaar are used to benefit residents in all levels of care and provide fundi n g fo r P l e a s a n t V i e w programming. “In 2026, the auxiliary has provided $25,000 for benevolent care as well as equipment for skilled care and personal care nursing staff, a new Ping-Pong table, books for the PV library and equipment for the wood shop,” Fetherman said. “The auxiliary sponsored a food truck for staff for Nursing Home Week and provided $2,000 in seed money for two ‘wishes’ to be granted t o r e s i d e n t s f o r P V ’s new Pleasant Moments
initiative.” This year, the auxiliary has set a goal of raising $10,000 to benefit residents through the craft bazaar. Hoffman said the quality of the makers, the pastoral setting and engaging volunteers make the Pleasant View bazaar unforgettable. “ E ac h ye a r we fo c u s on the customers’ experience by providing an inclusive, affordable, family -friendly event,” she said. “ This is our No. 1 fundraising event to support residents in need at Pleasant View Communities. Our volunteers are committed to this mission of ser vice and support. Several of our makers return each year and say this is one of their favorite shows.” For more information on the bazaar, visit https://pleasantview communities.org/events.

Light from pg 1 Maddie’s coach. “We target every aspect, both physically and mentally, and we repeat the tenets of taekwondo at every class,” he said. “Those are courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self-control and an indomitable spirit. Everything moves around that, and that’s how we build the character of our kids.” He emphasized that the sport’s name reflects its mission. “‘Tae’ means ‘kicking,’ ‘kwon’ means ‘punching’ and ‘do’ means ‘way of life or how you behave,’” he said. Students also repeat an oath at each class that emphasizes respect, freedom, justice and peace. Matt said he’s noticed how the sport has positively impacted Maddie and her peers. “People think taekwondo is just about punching or kicking, but it’s about so much more than that,” he said. “It’s about creating kids who become good people in the world.” Maddie, who traveled to Spain with her father, grandmother and aunt, is excited to keep competing. She’ll participate in tour-
or “grade,” of 10, and by the time an athlete reaches a gup of one, she’s ready to try for her first “dan” degree, the equivalent of a first-level black belt. Although the silver medal is a major achievement for Maddie, it’s not the first time she has shone in the sport. “Maddie has 114 medals, 38 trophies and three change belts,” said her father, Matt. “In Spain she competed with her red belt, but she just tested for black belt.” Maddie, 13, is an eighthgrader at Manheim Central Middle School. She began taking taekwondo at Advantage Taekwon-Do (TKD) in Lititz in 2019. She loved the sport immediately. “I like that there are so many things you can do with just this one sport,” she said. “From sparring to patterns to learning special techniques, it’s just fun.” Describing the martial art, Maddie said it combines elements of karate and kickboxing, with an emphasis on kicks and punches. But the sport’s inf luence off the mat is just as important, said Luis Mejia, Advantage TKD owner and

In the meantime, she’s busy taking classes up to three days a week and teaching younger students in Lititz, and she spends one to two days a week at Baltimore Taekwon-Do. Maddie said what she loves most about the sport isn’t the medals, the kicking or the punching. “It’s not just about tech-

To see all the smiles being shared and fun being had during this event - it is always worth it and a great motivation to provide this event year after year. We love being able to see the love of Christ spread throughout the night.” She also emphasized the support Teen Central receives from the community, including for activities such as Light the Night. “This event wouldn’t be possible without our wonderful volunteers and other partnerships within the community,” Heying said. “A special thank you to all who contribute to this event, whether it be with their time, resources or prayers and encouragement.” To learn more about Teen Central, contact info@ teencentralmanheim.org or 717-664-2990.
