Teen Central Announces Fall Banquet

Teen Central welcomed Janelle Heying as its new executive director in the spring, and the community will have a chance to hear from her at the organization’s annual fall banquet on Tuesday, Nov. 12, at Manheim Brethren in Christ Church, 54 N. Penryn Road, Manheim. Admission is free; however, reservations are requested. To reserve a space, interested individuals may call 717-664-2990 or email info@manheim teencentral.org by Friday, Oct. 18.

Doors will open for the banquet at 6 p.m., and people may bid on items in a silent auction. Items will include tickets to the Strasburg Rail Road, wall décor, gift cards, and themed gift baskets.

Winners of the silent auction will be announced at the end of the evening.

Levi Pittman, pictured with his wife, Jenn, and son, Jonathan, will be the keynote speaker at the Friends in Action Missions Banquet on Nov. 1 in Harrisburg. practical service to speed the message of the Gospel of Jesus Christ to people who have never heard it before. “We are honored to be named a 2019 Top-Rated Nonprofit,� stated Tim Johnston, executive director for FIA. “We are excited about what God is doing through our efforts this year.�

Johnston shared that so far this year those efforts have included providing clean water to more than 20,000 West Africans, medical assistance to more than 1,200 people in Bolivia and Brazil, community transformation and life skills training for more than 1,400 people in Nicaragua, educational support to hundreds of residents in Moldova and Papua New Guinea, opportunities to

serve and experience a new culture to hundreds of local volunteers, and - most importantly an opportunity for more than 215,000 people to hear the Gospel.

People who would like to hear more about the thousands of people in indigenous villages who are being transformed by the Gospel through outreaches led by FIA are invited to the 2019 Missions Banquet.

The banquet will take place on Friday, Nov. 1, at Best Western Premier The Central Hotel, 800 E. Park Drive, Harrisburg. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m., and a buffet dinner featuring beef tips, lemon herb chicken, assorted desserts, and more will be served at 6:20 p.m.

Manheim Central Foundation for Educational Enrichment (MCFEE) is funding another presentation by former NBA player Chris Herren on Tuesday, Oct. 22, at 1 p.m. at the Manheim Central Middle School for students in seventh through ninth grades, as well as staff members.

Herren realized his dream of playing in the NBA, only to lose everything due to his drug and alcohol addiction.

He has been sober since 2008.

The Herren Project Initiative and program, formerly called Project Purple, have been implemented at Manheim Central High School and are continuing this year, and the middle school principal had expressed an interest in bringing the program and initiative to the middle school level as well. The middle school has started implementing the initiative and clubs.

A MCFEE donor has funded the cost of 2,000 purple BE YOU Herren Project Manheim Central shirts for all students in fifth through 12th grades in the district and staff members who commit to the Herren Project pledge.

Heying graduated from Manheim Central High School in 2009 and earned a bachelor’s degree in youth ministry from Eastern University, where she double minored in biblical studies and psychology. After college, Heying spent four years serving as a youth pastor at a Presbyterian church in Cincinnati, Ohio. She married her husband, Drew, in 2016, and the couple’s son, Connor, was born in 2019. Currently, the Heyings live in Middletown and attend St. Paul’s United Church of Christ in Manheim.

Teen Central, located at 15 S. Wolf St., Manheim, is a nonprofit youth center funded by local churches, businesses, organizations, and individuals. Teen Central is open to students in grades five through eight from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays and to high school students from 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesdays. On Thursdays, the youth center is open to all students in grades five through 12 from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursdays are themed nights.

Shock The Block Event Slated Pod 2 at Rock Lititz invites the community to its annual Shock the Block, an evening of Halloween fun for all ages, on Thursday, Oct. 24, from 5:30 to 8 p.m.

The event will include more than two dozen activities, including trick-or-treating, themed scenes and interactive games, children’s crafts, and

demonstrations by the Dutchland Derby Rollers team. The Shock Zone, produced by professional scenic artists, will feature interactive scenes, sounds and special effects.

New this year will be prizes in Lititz Bikeworks’ pumpkin patch, where children can win discount coupons, a bike helmet, or a new bike. The event will also

include hayrides, unicorn hugs, a bounce house, a balloon artist, and free cotton candy. Food and beverages will be available for purchase on-site at Gravie Kitchen + Commons and Fetish Brewing Company.

Advance tickets will be discounted and are available by searching for “Shock the Block” at www.eventbrite.com. Children under age 2 will be admitted for free. Proceeds will benefit the Warwick Education Foundation. Last year’s event raised more than $10,000.

Located at 201 Rock Lititz Blvd., Pod 2 is a 250,000-square-foot collaborative community of 29 companies that serve the live event industry and the community at large. It includes a restaurant, a climbing gym, a bike shop, a yoga studio, a music shop and a craft distillery.

Ari Levine enjoyed a hug from a friendly unicorn at last year’s Shock the Block. This year’s event will take place at Pod 2 at Rock Lititz on Thursday, Oct. 24.

Faith United Methodist Church, 1290 Fruitville Pike, Lititz, located at the corner of Koser Road in Manheim Township, will host a pulled pork and bake sale on Saturday, Oct. 19.

Eat-in and takeout options will be available. Pulled pork sandwiches and combo meals will be sold from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Combo meals will include chips or pretzels, homemade baked beans, dessert, and a beverage.

A selection of baked goods and pints of pulled pork or baked beans will also be sold separately.

All local farmers and agribusiness leaders are invited to a farmers breakfast on Thursday, Oct. 24, at 9 a.m. The breakfast will be held at The Gathering Place, 6 Pine St., Mount Joy. State Rep. Mindy Fee will co-host the event with state Sen. Ryan Aument and state Rep. Dave Hickernell.

Essay Contest Winners Announced As part of Sertoma Inc.’s National Heritage program, Manheim Sertoma recently honored three Manheim Central Middle School sixth-graders for winning the Steve Heagy Freedom Week Essay Contest.

Nathan Hoffer, Gretchen Kreider, and Mollee Troiano read their winning essays at a Sertoma meeting and received cash prizes and plaques. The essay contest was open to all sixth-graders at the school. The three winners were chosen from among 90 entries.

Andrew Kreider Andrew Kreider, a secondgrade teacher at Brandywine Wallace Elementary School, was awarded the Pennsylvania Council of Teachers of Mathematics’ New Teacher Award for 2019.

This award is given to math educators who teach students in kindergarten through 12th grades and who have taught for three or fewer years. The awardee must exhibit contagious enthusiasm and use innovative strategies when teaching mathematics.

Kreider was nominated by principal Dr. Linda Leib for the award.

With his students, Kreider has used stream-able lessons to solve problems with other math teachers and classrooms around the United States. He also serves as Brandywine Wallace’s technology innovator.

Kreider graduated from Manheim Central High School in 2006.

11th Annual National Day Of Prayer For Mental Health Planned Church Slates Events

The National Day of Prayer for Mental Illness Recovery and Understanding will be held on Thursday, Oct. 17, at Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster. The doors will open at 6:30 p.m., and displays and a prayer room will be available at that time.

The theme of this year’s event, which will begin at 7 p.m., will be “Understanding Trauma: Finding Help and Comfort.” Members of the organizing committee include Cathi Myers, Gwen Didden, Flo Rebert, and speakers Freeman Chakara and Dannel Wissler.

Chakara, a board-certified neuropsychologist and the head of Providence Behavioral Health, is also a professor at Lancaster Bible College. Wissler is a licensed professional counselor who works with Providence and is part of the Lancaster County Critical Incident Stress Management Team.

“The focus this year is on trauma and related disorders,” said Chakara. “We thought we would address post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which has been in the national conversation with regard to veterans and its close cousin, acute stress disorder.”

Chakara explained that he plans

to discuss the weight of the issue and, based on current research, how the problems associated with stress disorders can be managed. “(This event is) an invitation to think about this with people of faith,” said Chakara. “(To explore) what … Scripture says about the aspects of suffering and trauma.”

Wissler noted that the discussion will range beyond the coverage stress disorders in veterans have garnered to include first responders, police, and events that affect the larger community.

Myers, who has been involved with the event since its inception, said that the prayer room and display area will be open prior to the service as well as after. “We have had the prayer room normally open just at the end of the (event),” she noted. “(This year), we will have it at the beginning as well as the end to give more opportunity for people to pray.”

Some of the Scripture for this year’s event is from 2 Corinthians 1:3-4, which reads, “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and

the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God.” Myers explained that a special station will be available to bring added meaning to this verse. “We will have … a basin of water, and we will have disappearing paper,” she explained. “People can write words (associated with) things they have suffered, and when they put (the paper) in the water, they can watch

the suffering dissolve, symbolizing how God can help us work through the trauma and suffering.”

There is no cost to attend the service, and registration is not necessary. A freewill offering will be received to defray expenses associated with the event. A portion of the offering will be designated for Faith and Friendship Ministries, which is the sponsor of the service.

“I was very pleased with how the girls played,” head coach Jason Moyer said. “We were able to keep them out of system and keep pace with them, but they are a strong, well rounded team and we just couldn’t end it.”

Central was led by Grace Stoltzfus, who had four aces. Tori Henderson and Emma Moyer were strong at the net with five kills each and Maddie Knier added five blocks. Amber Kauffman had six digs.

Manheim lost another tight match 3-0 to Ephrata on Thursday, Oct. 10 on game scores of 26-24, 26-24 and 25-18.

Offensively, Henderson had two serving aces and Stoltzfus dished out 22 assists. Central got strong net play from Moyer and Monica Bauman with six kills each and Knier added four blocks. Defensively, Moyer collected six digs.

FOOTBALL After not being happy with the play of Special Teams the week prior, Barons’ coach Dave Hahn saw his unit step up in a big way Friday, Oct. 11, as junior Owen Pappas ran the opening kickoff back 80 yards to give Central a 6-0 lead against Conestoga Valley.

From there, senior quarterback Evan Simon took over, accounting for six touchdowns. Simon threw for 273 yards, putting him over 7,000 yards for his career, making him the Lancaster-Lebanon League’s all-time passing leader, surpassing Wilson’s Chad Henne.

Simon threw for three TDs and had three more on the ground, rushing for 138 yards.

possession after halftime, Colby Wagner took a jet sweep 82 yards for a touchdown and the Barons had a 42-13 lead.

Wagner’s brother, Ben, had a big game, catching seven passes for 136 yards and hauling in two touchdowns.

Since losing two games in a row earlier in the season, Central has now won five straight and is 5-0 in Section Two, a section win streak that stretches to 22 over three seasons.

Manheim’s defense held CV to 136 yards of offense. On the other side, the Barons offense accumulated 546 total yards.

BOYS’ SOCCER The Barons are one of the hottest teams in the Lancaster-Lebanon League. Winners of five of their last seven games, Central is clicking at just the right time, as a District Three playoffs berth is up for grabs.

Rob Brenize’s young team has gained experience and is turning close losses earlier in the season into wins now. Take Thursday Oct. 10 for example. The Barons pulled out a clutch 1-0 double overtime victory against Elizabethtown.

If the Barons didn’t win, their season was over. But they did, so the season continues.

Logan Whitehouse’s goal helped make sure of that. Whitehouse, a senior defender, scored in the last 17 seconds of the game.

Brenize, knowing it was all or nothing and his team had to win, moved his players up the field, going with only three defensive backs, using the fourth back on offense.

“We won the midfield with some great hustle by Nate Reed along the sideline,” Brenize said. “The ball went to (Tyler) Snavely, (Quintin) Rohrer and a couple other players before eventually finding Logan Whitehouse.”

Whitehouse was an outside back.

He pushed up and was unaccounted for defensively. He received the ball just outside the 10 with no defender on him, took two touches and then

placed a rolling shot on the ground just inside the right side of the net.

The win propelled the Barons from No. 18 to No. 13 in districts.

Brenize said there are still some games remaining in the Mid Penn League, so Central’s seeding could move up or down, but Manheim should qualify for districts.

On Monday, Oct. 7 the Barons beat Garden Spot 4-3 to keep their playoff hopes alive. Rohrer scored twice in the contest (41:00 and 60:00) and Snavely (50:00) added a goal. Central also gained a point when the Spartans scored in their own goal.

CROSS COUNTRY Elijah Wagner and Isaac Martin finished first and third overall in a boys’ country meet against Lancaster Catholic on Tuesday Oct. 8, but the late kicks by runners like Michael Greenwald, Brady Knier and Bailey Garman proved vital in a close 24-33 victory. The Barons also defeated Octorara, 18-42.

Greenwald placed sixth overall with a time of 18:07. Knier (18:35) and Garman (18:38) placed eighth and ninth, respectively. This was a key to holding off runners for the Crusaders.

“Greenwald, Knier, and Garman came through for us to secure the

win,” head coach Ryan Kennedy said.

“They did a nice job of staying focused on picking up every place they could and that made the difference in the meet.”

Wagner held off a Catholic runner by three seconds for first place. Martin posted a time of 17:50.

Ezekiel Ruffner (18:57) had the sixth best time for Central (top five count to the team score).

On the girls’ side, Lancaster Catholic held off the Barons for a tightly contested 26-29 triumph.

Central beat Octorara 15-55.

Sophomore Olivia Sunderland was second overall and paced Central with a time of 21:11. Sophomore Bella Reber (22:09) was fourth. Erin Hoffman ran 23:50 to finish seventh, and Jenna Moffett (23:56) and Emma Levitan (24:59), placed tenth and 11th, respectively, rounding out the Barons top five runners. Paige Heslop, a freshman, ran a 25:43 and was 13th.

“Olivia Sunderland and Bella Reber continue to run well,” Kennedy said. “Erin Hoffman ran tough despite battling an injury. We were missing two of our usual top five girls, which, unfortunately put us at a disadvantage.”

Apprentices Compete In Annual Competition Five local apprentices received top scores at the ABC Keystone’s annual Craft Competition on Sept. 21 at the chapter’s training facility in Manheim.

Earning the top scores in their respective trades provides these apprentices the opportunity to move on to the 2020 ABC National Craft Competition to be held March 26, 2020, in Nashville, and they will each receive from the chapter an all-expenses-paid trip to the competition. All competitors received Home Depot gift cards.

The fourth-year top-scoring apprentices represented five trades: carpentry, electrical, HVAC, plumbing, and sheet metal. ABC Keystone has a history of producing National Craft

Championship medal winners representing the southcentral Pennsylvania area.

The timed competition followed a similar format as the upcoming national competition, and apprentices were challenged to follow plans to

tough conditions to play in, Barons’ coach Morgan Briggs said, but the girls did a great job of scoring three goals. Lexi Hosler found the back of the cage twice, converting at 2:31 in the first and again 40 seconds into second half. Maddy Barbush, about a minute after Hosler’s first goal, put Central up 2-0 at 3:09 into the first.

Goal keeper Mikayla Regan gained the shutout, collecting five saves.

Tuesday, Oct. 8 was a special night as Manheim honored its seniors by posting a 6-0 victory against Solanco.

Hosler and Lily Sipel, both seniors, each had three goals to lead the team.

“The girls did a good job of executing our press and stepping up to the ball with speed,” Briggs said “Our receptions looked better this game and we made smart decisions.”

Friday, Oct. 11 Central played Garden Spot and won 2-1. The Barons trailed 1-0 at intermission, but rallied for the win behind goals by Jenna Lutz and Lilly Sipel.

“I was proud of the girls for battling, despite being down 1-0 early on,” Briggs said. “They did not give up and scored two second-half goals to get the win. They connected well and played as a team.

“We made some adjustments to our defense and the girls reacted really well on the field,” Stoltzfus said.

“Autumn Greiner and Tori Fahnestock were solid on defense and Rachel Merrill added a new dimension to our midfield.”

Stoltzfus said his squad dominated the first half but couldn’t put any points on the board. The winning goal ended up being off a free kick from about half field.

The Manheim Central High School girls’ soccer team hosted a First Responder Night at its first home game, played against Northeastern on Sept. 10.

Coaches and players wanted to recognize and thank local first responders who serve and protect the Manheim community.

During a halftime mid-field presentation, team representatives presented signed soccer balls to first responders as a sign of support and thanks.

Farm Show Baking Contest Winners Recognized The 66th annual Manheim Community Farm Show was held from Oct. 7 to 11. Among the fair components were baked goods competitions, with 114 exhibitors entering nearly 300 items.

The youth-decorated cakes had four entries. Faith Landis of Lancaster brought home first place and Youth Best of Show. Her cake sold at the evening auction on Oct. 8 for $120.

Maggie Edgell entered the PSACF Homemade Chocolate Cake Contest and received first

place. This made her eligible for the competition at the 2020 Pennsylvania Farm Show in Harrisburg.

Youth Heidi Rohrer won first place for her apple toaster pastries with cinnamon frosting. Her toaster pastries sold for $70 at the evening auction on Oct. 8.

Showing up with his pecan pie was Manheim Borough Police Officer Hudson Hughes. He has Maggie Edgell’s chocolate cake placed first and won Best of Show won first place in the PSACF for three consecutive years. His Homemade Chocolate Cake pie sold at the auction for $210.

Boscov’s To Hold Fundraising Event Boscov’s will host Friends Helping Friends, a community fundraising event, on Wednesday, Oct. 16, from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. in all 47 of its stores. In 2018, Friends Helping Friends raised over $800,000 for charitable organizations in communities where Boscov’s stores are located.

Community service agencies and schools throughout the community have been invited to participate in this benefit shopping day. Boscov’s has provided participating groups and organizations with discount shopping passes, which they have been selling for the past few months.

Each shopping pass can be obtained for a set donation to the nonprofit and is good for 25% off a customer’s purchases on Wednesday. (Minimal exclusions do apply and are listed on the ticket.) Organizations selling the shopping passes keep the entire ticket price.

On Friends Helping Friends Day, shoppers may enjoy savings, refreshments, and entertainment.

Everyone with a shopping pass has a chance to win one of four $500 Boscov’s shopping sprees on a corporate level as well as a $100 Boscov’s shopping spree at each store.

Many participating groups will be providing volunteers to help throughout the store by selling shopping passes and providing entertainment.

Business Ethics Event Announced Samaritan Business Consulting will present speaker Ryan McCarty, author and cofounder of “Culture of Good,” on Thursday, Oct. 24, for its 2019 Ethics in Business celebration. The event will take place at The Inn at Leola Village, 38 Deborah Drive, Leola, from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Brian Roche will be the master of ceremonies.

This event will be a celebration of the ongoing efforts of local businesses throughout Lancaster County that are doing their part in meeting the five areas of the Ethics in Business Award: integrity, fairness and justice, stewardship, life-enhancing, and transparency. The evening will include the opportunity to network with other business professionals, hear from the keynote speaker, and celebrate the 2019 Ethics in Business recipient as well as the finalists.
