Still serving the local community
BY CATHY MOLITORISTheCyrus R. Peters Memorial VFW Post 5956 has a mission of honoring military service while supporting the community. Now both the post and its commander, Craig Fisher, have been recognized for their efforts.

Each year, the Veterans of Foreign Wars highlights the top-performing posts through its All-American program at the VFW National Convention. For the second year in a row, the Manheim post received this honor, Fisher said.
“The distinction of All-American is conveyed upon those posts that stand out in recruiting, retaining and mentoring a stable membership base, covering all generations of combat veterans,” Fisher said. “In addition, the posts must cultivate a membership that is wellversed in institutional knowledge and actively involved at all levels of
the organization and in the local community.”
Post 5956 was recognized at the convention in Phoenix, Ariz., earlier this summer. Fisher noted that of the 438 VFW posts in Pennsylvania, only 42 made All-American, with 10 ranking high enough to be invited to the convention.
honor,” Fisher explained, adding that the post also received a sign designating the honor to place outside its location at 149 S. Charlotte St. in Manheim.

The Manheim post actively participates in community programs, including the Patriot’s Pen essay contest for middle school students and the Voice of Democracy oratorial program for high school students. Fisher said the post was also honored for increasing its membership this past year by 10%.
“In addition to receiving the AllAmerican Commanders Cap, an award certificate and a streamer for the post flag, post members are eligibleto wear special membership caps or pins that acknowledge the

“Additionally, participation in community activities, financial support of veterans’ programs and the local community are considered,” he remarked. “In demonstration of the hashtag ‘still serving,’ the post put in over 3,631 man hours of participation in many community activities. Through multiple fundraising activities, the post provided over $165,500 in financial assistance throughout the program year to

When she was a child, Tess Gerritsen couldn’t resist a good mystery book. “The first mystery novels I read were Nancy Drew books,” recalled the New York Times bestselling author of more than 30 novels. “I remember thinking, ‘I want to do that. I want to tell those kinds of stories.’”
Becoming an author wasn’t a straight course for Gerritsen, who

“Being from a practical AsianAmerican family, my parents wanted me to do something more traditional for a career,” she said. She graduated from Stanford University and went to medical school, eventually becoming a doctor. Her desire for storytelling never faltered, however, and when she was on maternity leave after the birth of her first

Post 5956 also earned the Veterans of Foreign Wars Outstanding Community Service award, which was presented to Fisher during a banquet at the national convention. The award recognized the post members’ involvement in the local community, including participating in projects that impact veterans and youths.
As post commander, Fisher has worked hard not only to increase membership, but also to raise awareness of everything the VFW does. For the second year, he was selected to represent the

Department of Pennsylvania on a special committee for legislative action. At the national convention, he participated on the National Security and Foreign Affairs Committee, working to determine veteran-related legislation at the state level.
Fisher encourages anyone who is interested in learning more to inquire about VFW membership. “If you are a veteran with qualifying service, the Cyrus R. The Lancaster County Postcard Club will hold its October meeting at 7 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 16, at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. The evening’s program, “Harvard’s Glass Flower Models 18861939,” will be presented by

son, she wrote her first novel, “Call After Midnight.” It was published in 1987, and by her third book, “Harvest,” Gerritsen made her New York Times bestseller debut in 1996.
She had started following her heart, and she didn’t plan to return to medicine. “We moved from Honolulu to Maine, and I was so determined to focus on my writing, I decided not to apply for a Maine medical license,” she said.
She took what she knew from the medical field and put it into her books, which have been published in 40 countries and often have a tie to medicine. Publisher’s Weekly dubbed Gerritsen the “medical suspense queen,” but she also made a name for herself in the industry for creating the “Rizzoli & Isles”
series, focused on a partnership between two crime-solving women. The book series became a global hit and inspired the long-running TNT series of the same name.

Gerritsen will discuss her latest book, “The Spy Coast,” at her November talk, where she’ll be joined on stage by WITF’s Scott LaMar.
“I don’t do book readings, because I think they’re kind of boring,” she said with a laugh.

“What I like to talk about is, ‘Where do ideas come from? What is my process of approaching writing a new book? How do I develop characters? How do I keep going when I hit a wall?’”
Proceeds from Gerritsen’s appearance will benefit all of the public libraries in Lancaster County, said Mary Ann Steinhauer, leader of the

Council of Friends.

“When I read Tess’ bio, I realized how unbelievable she is,” Steinhauer said. “It just goes to show you that her early passion manifested itself as an adult, and she was able to put that passion, along with her education and training as a doctor, into doing something she loves.”

Gerritsen said she hopes her story will inspire others to follow their dreams, noting that she often hears from readers, many of whom have done just that. Sometimes, however, the stories she hears are sadder.
One reader told her he’d been an engineer all his life, but he had wanted to become a fashion designer. “He told me he really regretted his career choice,” she said. “I like to tell people, ‘Find a way to make what you want to do

Edged Feather Experiences is one of the many unique attractions currently appearing at the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire at Mount Hope Estate & Winery, 2775 Lebanon Road, Manheim. Stacey stages three 30-minute shows each weekend day on the Ren Faire’s joust field, each featuring a different bird of prey or combination of birds.
The entertaining and educational shows are designed to display each species’ skills and talents as hunters, and the last five minutes of each show are used for audience questions and photos. When Stacey’s birds aren’t performing, they can be viewed on the grounds of Mount Hope Estate & Winery.

“I try to get the audience as close to the birds as possible, within reason,” said Stacey. “My goal is to give (members of the audience) a better
appreciation of the world around us. All of the birds are very much individuals. One of my birds gets so excited before shows. I’ve got another bird that just loves to be around people; he thrives on attention. They are absolutely performers. They know their jobs really well.”
Stacey’s flock of hunters consists of Titus, a red-tailed hawk; Kasai, an African augur buzzard; Skyler, an African lanner falcon; Goose, an African tide crow; Wicket, a barred owl; Jack, a Harris’s hawk; and Sir Dante, a Eurasian eagle-owl.
“It is a very one-sided relationship,” said Stacey. “If I were to drop dead, they’d eat all the food and fly off. There would be no mourning. But I care deeply for the birds. I can’t tell you how much I’ve dedicated to them. Their care requires a well-trained hand.”
“It’s my job to give them as natural a life as I can - that they get to be birds,” added Stacey. “It’s also my job to make sure they’re well exercised and flown regularly. We rehearse with them, and when they’re done, they get their food as a reward.”

Keeping the faith
BY ANN MEAD ASHSince the fall of 2022, David Kieffer, president of the FaithfulGive board, has been preparing for the organization’s first online giving event to benefit organizations with a Christian mission that are active in Lancaster County. “We prayed and thought and designed and listened for a year,” said Kieffer of FaithfulGive’s five-member board and its organizational team. “Mostly we listened to what would serve various nonprofit leaders.”
The result is a three-day online giving event, which will take place in October. More than 40 local organizations have signed on to take part in the fundraiser, which will open just after midnight on Sunday, Oct. 15, and close at the end of the day on Tuesday, Oct. 17.
To introduce the event, a breakfast will be held on Monday, Oct. 16, at Westminister Presbyterian Church, 2151 Oregon Pike, Lancaster, beginning at 7:30 a.m. In addition, a short celebration picnic will be held on Oct. 17 at 5 p.m. at Long’s Park. “There will be worship, celebration, and announcing prizes,” explained Kieffer. There is no cost to attend either event, but donations will be welcomed. Those

wishing to attend either event may register at www.faithfulgive.org.
Awards given at the picnic will include prizes that participating organizations will compete for from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. each day of the event.

Prize categories are the Engaged Donor prize to benefit smaller organizations; the Show Me the Money prize for the largest unique donation; a prize package from Masterpiece Marketing, which will be awarded based on a written submission; and the Just Keep Swimming award, which will be awarded by the board based on nominations by donors who submit a paragraph about why an organization has demonstrated wisdom, love, and persistent courage in challenging circumstances. Nominations for the Just Keep Swimming award are open at https://faithfulgive.org/ prizes/.

Kieffer pointed out that the first day of the event will not be focused on giving, although the platform will be available. “It’s really a day of prayer,” he said, noting that prayer guides will be distributed to various churches that are helping FaithfulGive to spread the word. “(The guide) will enable people to learn about the organizations and
pray for them,” Kieffer said. Kieffer said that the decision to start FaithfulGive was motivated by the many Kingdom-minded organizations located in the county. “This is really a movement of people who live locally who recognize that Lancaster has a rich heritage of biblically faithful nonprofit organizations founded to reflect and live out biblical convictions in every area of life,” he said. “This was started by those who want to celebrate those organizations, nurture their vision, and guard it for the next generation.”
Looking ahead, Kieffer noted that he would love to see the giving event raise $500,000 or more. “Our goal is to bless this community,” he said. “This is really a labor of love,” he noted, adding that

LCSWMA encourages proper
battery disposal
Rechargeable batteries containing metals such as lithium and nickel can spark and explode when damaged. To combat the growing risk of battery fires, the Lancaster County Solid Waste Management Authority (LCSWMA) has announced the launch of a public education campaign to encourage proper disposal of rechargeable batteries.
Rechargeable batteries are in many common household items, including power tools, toys, cellphones, laptops, watches, vape devices and electric toothbrushes. If the rechargeable battery becomes damaged, it can cause a chemical reaction that creates a spark or explosion. Rechargeable batteries in the waste stream are prone to damage due to the impact from equipment and machinery during the waste management process.

According to Robert Zor-

baugh, chief executive officer of LCSWMA, the improper disposal of rechargeable batteries is putting trash haulers, waste disposal and recycling facilities, employees and the community at risk. Countless fires have started in the back of trash trucks and at waste disposal facilities.
Karen Gross, LCSWMA communications manager, would like the community to know that there are many free and convenient drop-off locations for end-of-life rechargeable batteries. In Lancaster County, residents

neither he nor the other board members - who include vice president Lynette Morales, secretary Jim Adams, treasurer Steve Bucklen, and member at large Kurt Weaver - are salaried. Readers who would like more information about the first FaithfulGive event may visit the aforementioned website.

can use LCSWMA’s drivethrough Household Hazardous Waste Facility to dropoff both alkaline and rechargeable batteries.

For more details and to learn about other collection locations, visit www.Safe BatteryDisposal.com. The webpage, available in English and Spanish, includes information regarding specialty batteries such as e-bike and electric vehicle batteries as well as battery handling tips.

Tapas
BY JEFF FALK
The battle against human trafficking is difficult and continual. North Star Initiative is seeking help to carry on the fight.
It is that mission that is really at the heart of North Star Initiative’s annual Tapas
Shindig. This year’s fundraising, awareness raising and relationship building event will be presented on Friday, Oct. 20, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Foundry48, 100 W. Millport Road, Lititz.
The event will begin with networking, a silent auction, tapas and mocktails, followed by a program and live auction, before concluding with dessert and coffee.
The theme for the event is “Light Up the Night.Together we can illuminate the path to a brighter future for survivors of sex trafficking.”
“A lot of people ask me, ‘What can I do? I want to get involved,’” said North Star Initiative executive director Melinda Clark. “This is the time to come and get involved. It’s also partnering together to form a community where trafficking is unimaginable, where trafficking doesn’t exist. We encourage people to find their place in the battle. It’s a massive battle, but the battle is winnable. Want to know where to start? This is it.”

Tapas is a food trend that originated in Spain and involves serving a variety of appetizers and small servings. The evening’s ambiance will be enhanced by live music.

“The food is delicious, and it’s just one of the fun

aspects of the evening,” said Clark. “We’re gathering with good people over good food for a good cause. It’s a feel of friends getting together to enjoy each other’s company. ... It builds its own synergy when people connect around the cause.”
Clark is expected to address the gathering about North Star Initiative’s purpose, the work it has already accomplished and the struggles that lie ahead.
“I’ll have a chance to share North Star’s mission and vision to end trafficking and supporting those lives that have been affected by it,” said Clark. “I want to talk about how our common experiences can help the challenges our survivors face. People think it’s happening just overseas, but it’s

not. It’s also happening here in Lancaster County. It’s the perfect opportunity to get an update on the state of it.”

North Star Initiative is planning for 200 people to attend Tapas Shindig. This year’s goal is to raise $200,000 for the mission, $25,000 more than was donated in 2022.
This year will mark North Star Initiative’s fifth edition of Tapas Shindig. Last year’s event was conducted at The Junction Center in Manheim.

Located in Lititz, North Star Initiative was founded in 2010. It began through an undercover collaboration with law enforcement.
To register for the Tapas Shindig go to www.north starinitiative.org/upcoming -events.
Members of the Sierra Club - Lancaster Group invite the public to join
them for an easy to moderate scenic hike through the Nolde Forest at 9 a.m. on

Leather, tattoos, bikes, heartand toys
BY JEFF FALKFrom the outside looking in, the annual Lancaster County Toy Ride may look like just another group of bikers out for a day on the road. But it’s more than that. The event seeks to help fund Christmas gifts for children who may not otherwise receive many presents.
The 2023 Lancaster County Toy Ride will be conducted on Saturday, Oct. 14, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event will begin and end at American Legion Post 34, 1388 Arcadia Road, Lancaster.
A monetary donation or a donation of a toy with a set minimum value is suggested. All proceeds from the event will go to Lancaster County Toys for Tots.
“Sometimes people just see the (tattoos) and the leather,” said Jimmy Emig, the ride director and an elder for the tri-state chapter of Bikers for Christ. “I think some bikers get labeled just by the look. But you can’t judge a book by a cover. Open the book. If you do, you’re going to see a big heart. It’s one big heart on two wheels. That’s what a real biker is.”
At 1 p.m., kickstands will go up, and the participants in the Lancaster County Toy Ride will hit the road to

not know his name, but you know his purpose. It’s inspiring. It’s coming together for one cause.”
That brotherhood is extensive and far-reaching. Between 500 and 1,000 bikers are expected to participate in the Lancaster County Toy Ride.

“It’s the biker community,” said Emig. “Over half of them who come out are from the Lancaster area. It’s motorcycle clubs coming together. This is the biggest ride in our biker community. We average 80 to 100 riding events each year

and this is the biggest one put together for a cause. This is the one that everyone circles on their calendars.”
Emig said that the Lancaster County chapter of Toys for Tots’ operating budget for this year is $80,000. The purpose of the ride is to help provide some of those funds.
“$80,000 is a pretty big number,” said Emig. “There’s no goal besides trying to help offset the costs for Toys for Tots. I think bikers can lead by example and show what happens when people come together. We need to start coming together.”
The Lancaster County Toy Ride was first established 25 years ago. In the past, toys and funds were donated directly to local children in hospitals or children who were homeless.
This year marks the first time that the ride has been associated with Lancaster County Toys for Tots.
“It’s almost all the time that we’re looking to help out children,” said Emig. “W hen we first started this, we just wanted
