Those orchestras were our inspiration for organizing one of our own. We wanted to celebrate his legacy and engage a whole new generation with the melodious and unique sound of the marimba.” The festival will feature marimba players from across the United States and around the world who will offer an immersive week of rehearsals, master classes, lectures,

Creativity should not have an age limit. With that in mind, Pleasant View Communities will create a multi-use makerspace at its Manheim campus. The site will feature specialized studios for pottery, woodworking, visual arts, textile/fiber arts and technology-based creative activities. The space is designed to serve individuals of all ages and skill levels and will offer hands-on learning opportunities through classes, demonstrations, studio time and collaborative projects. Pleasant View Communities was awarded a $600,000 Statewide Local Share Account grant through the Commonwealth Financing Authority to support the construction of the makerspace facility, which will offer programming opportunities for its retired residents and the local community. “The makerspace will provide a welcoming environment where people can come together to learn new skills, explore their creativity and build meaningful intergenerational connections,” Pleasant View president and CEO Jonathan Hollinger said. “We are extremely grateful for the support of Sen. James Malone and Rep. Mindy Fee, whose advocacy has helped advance the first phase of a project that will enrich the lives of our residents while creating new opportunities for community engagement throughout the region.” The makerspace is part of Pleasant View’s continued efforts to expand its programs and services to meet the growing demand for active senior living and opportunities for community See Create pg 3

University, 60 W. Cottage Ave., at 2:30 p.m. In addition to festival activities in Lancaster, participants and guest artists will travel throughout Pennsylvania, New York and Indiana for a series of performances, clinics and master classes, highlighting the versatility and artistic potential of the marimba while fostering collaboration among performers, educators and students. Smith, who is the assistant director of Manheim Central’s marching band, has played the marimba since she was in fourth grade. She studied it more seriously at Millersville University and then joined the Lancaster Marimba Ensemble 30 years ago, becoming director in 2020. She’s excited to introduce people to the marimba or bring longtime fans together to enjoy the instrument at the festival.

in costume as they walk alongside their wheeled creations, although costumes and decorations should avoid Halloween themes. “The parade is open to everyone of all ages,” said Arlene Heistand, planning committee member. “We are asking for the costumes to be family-friendly and fall-themed.” She suggested flannel shirts, bib overalls, cozy sweaters embellished with artificial leaves, flowers, pumpkins, gourds and more. The parade is just one part of an evening designed to bring people together and celebrate the season. Fall Fest will also feature fall games, warm drinks, baked goods, a campfire, a photo booth and more. Families can spend the evening enjoying seasonal treats and activities, gathering around the campfire and visiting with friends and neighbors. The event offers plenty of opportunities for children and adults to participate, whether they choose to decorate for the parade or simply enjoy the festivities. Risser’s Mennonite Church has a long history of hosting fall festivities, and this year’s event continues the church’s tradition of welcoming the community for an evening of fellowship and fun. “Risser’s has a community event every year,” Heistand explained. “We usually do a community picnic, but sometimes we do a fall event.” The events give church members a chance to spend time together while also opening the doors to the wider community. Fall Fest provides an opportunity for people to meet others, enjoy some seasonal activities and learn more about the church. See Fall Fest pg 5

“People can expect to be delighted,” she said. “Each event will feature different groupings of marimba performers, and each venue is unique in how the marimbas will be experienced by an audience. We also love to share the instrument’s history, and Lancaster has quite the marimba story to be shared.” Lancaster County played a major role in popularizing the marimba, with musician Musser promoting the instrument. A Manheim native, he was a marimba virtuoso, conductor, composer, teacher and

keyboard percussion designer who lived from 1901 to 1998. The festival provides a way for Smith and other marimba players to showcase the unique instrument. “One of the things I like best about the festival is the community built between the performers and those attending,” she commented. “Everyone is so willing to share about the instrument they love.” For a complete list of festival events and details, visit www.lancastermarimba.com/ heartland-marimba-festival.

Women’s Group to Start New Year Benefit from pg 1

The 39th year of Neighbors Sharing and Caring, a ministry of the Chiques Church, 4045 Sunnyside Road, Manheim, will start on Tuesday, Oct. 13. Women of all ages and preschool children are invited to attend from 9 to 10:45 a.m. The program will include devotions, music, brunch, and fellowship. The group’s theme for the year is “Be Still.” Speakers will

focus on the idea that, no matter where a woman is in life, she can accomplish the most when she stops striving and relies on Jesus. No preregistration is required. During the program, child care will be provided for infants through prekindergartners. Readers may contact Bonnie at 717-361-2613 or Veronica at 717-626-7603 for more information.

Fall Fest from pg 2 “We at Risser’s are striving to walk together with Christ as we build relationships within our community,” Heistand said. “If you are looking for a safe and fun Saturday evening event with the whole family, please join us for our Fall Fest. It will be a relaxing evening of warm drinks, games, campfire and fellowship for all ages.”

Risser’s Mennonite Church holds Sunday school for children and adults at 9 a.m., followed by a worship service at 10 a.m. Those attending Fall Fest are encouraged to bring lawn chairs. program of music and guest speakers who will share the heart and mission behind the ministry of Mt. Hope. The fundraising event will also feature lots of opportunities to win prizes ranging from themed baskets to experiences. “For 57 years, Mt. Hope has been committed to providing seniors and individuals with disabilities with quality nursing care; a high standard of living; and a Christ-centered environment where residents experience dignity, compassion, friendship and a true sense of belonging,” Wilson said. “Every gift and every dollar raised at this event helps strengthen that ministry and makes a difference in the lives of the people who call Mt. Hope their home.” This year’s banquet will have an Italian flair, with food prepared by the Amato family, owners of Francesco’s Italian Restaurant in Manheim. “The evening’s menu will take guests on a tour of Italy, featuring a

variety of Italian entrees, pastas and homemade sauces, including recipes inspired by the Amatos’ hometown in Carini, Sicily,” Wilson shared. The meal will also include Italian house salad with homemade Italian dressing and bread, including garlic knots. For dessert, Amy’s Mixing Bowl of Manheim will provide gourmet cake slices, while Kreider Farms has donated a variety of hand-dipped ice cream. The festivities will also include an auction, featuring experiences such as a homemade candle-making class for two from Wishing Well Candles & Gifts; meat for 30, donated by Peters’ BBQ; a homemade dessert each month for a year, donated by Dean and Janelle Wenger; handcrafted items such as hand-stitched comforters, wood-turned bowls and cutting boards; household items, including an air fryer, outdoor lawn furniture and an outdoor fire pit; and much more.
