Tenaya Metzler has always loved to write, and she’s always been close to her twin sister, Nickea. When the pair graduated from Manheim Central High School in 2020, Tenaya presented her twin with a book she’d written, “Your Name is Light,” featuring a main character loosely based on Nickea.

Tenaya said she never gave much thought to the book becoming more than a family gift until one day she saw an ad on TV. “I was at my grandparents’ house, and an ad came on for a publishing company,” Tenaya stated. She decided to submit her draft, enlisting her family to help with edits and suggestions for changes.

“My older sister advised me to make some changes, like having the characters travel to actual places, not the ones I had made up for the story,” Tenaya said. The original draft was also specifically tailored to Nickea, with inside family jokes and other personalization that Tenaya changed for the final version, striving to give the book a wider audience appeal.

“Your Name is Light” was published through Covenant Books in August. “It’s a work of fiction, and it has elements of nursing, romance, action, espionage, intrigue and international travel,” Tenaya said, noting that the book has a Christian focus. It tells the story of registered nurse Alina Dixon, whose ordinary life is shattered when she’s the vic-

tim of a brutal attack. Working closely with M15 agent Blane Burns, Alina travels the world to find out who’s behind the attack and stop a potential worldwide threat.

“One of the themes of the book is the idea of being saved,” Tenaya noted. “The main character is coming from a place of light, a place of faith from being a Christian, and the other character is in a dark place and has lost his faith.”

W hen she’s not writing, Tenaya works as a nurse, as do her twin sister and their older sister, Kierra. “My older sister has worked in the ER for years, and the main character in the book works in the ER,” Tenaya said. “I started writing the book before I became a nurse, so my sister Kierra’s insight really helped me with that part of the story.”

Tenaya also wrote some of her twin’s favorite things into the plot. “The places the characters go in the book are places my sister has always wanted to visit,” she explained, noting that the storyline takes the characters to Alaska, where they encounter sea otters, Nickea’s favorite animal. “They go to Norway to see the Northern Lights, and they go to Austria to attend a New Year’s Eve imperial ball. I think it’s everyone’s dream to go to a ball in Europe.”

“Your Name is Light” will be distributed through both secular and Christian outlets, in both print and e-book format. It is available on Amazon and at Barnes & Noble, among other outlets.

With one novel under her belt, Tenaya said she’d love to write more if she can find the time. “With my job, it will probably be a few years,” she said, “but I’m working on ideas now.”

She encourages anyone who loves to write to take the leap. “If you have an idea, just try and write it,” she stated. “You never know what will come of it, but you should take that first step: Sit down and write.”

The members of Jerusalem Church believe in giving “Glory to God.” That’s the message cut into a corn maze located at the church, 1620 Newport Road, Manheim. For the seventh time, a team of

church members designed and created the maze, and people are invited to explore paths through the cornstalks as part of the church’s Disguise & Prize event. The event will be held on Saturday, Oct. 8, from 1 to 4 p.m. The rain date will be Sunday, Oct. 9.

W hen she was in seminary, Barbara Seras used her cat as her “spiritual barometer.” He helped her take stock of her emotions and reminded her to appreciate the moment. “Pets teach us to be more gentle,” said the priest-in-charge of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Manheim. “They teach us to take our time, to slow down.”

Seras believes so much in the positive power of pets that she has organized the second annual Francis Fest, a blessing of the animals to be held at the church, 90 S. Charlotte St., on Sunday, Oct. 9. The event will begin at 1 p.m. on the church lawn at the corner of Charlotte and Ferdinand streets.

“Dogs, cats and other pets are all welcome,” Seras noted. “People can also bring pictures of their pets if they don’t want to bring the animal with them.” Children may bring stuffed animals to receive a blessing as well, and participants may also receive a blessing for pets who have passed away.

“The blessing of the animals is about saying thanks to God for creation,” Seras noted. “Animals bring so much joy into our life.”

Although this is only the second time Seras will hold the event in Manheim, she’s presided over animal blessings for years at other churches. “Lots of churches do a blessing, but I came up with the name ‘Francis Fest,’ because it’s held near St. Francis Day in early October,” she said, referring to the patron saint of animals. Over the years, she’s blessed everything from snakes to hamsters, goldfish, police horses and K9s.

All animals attending Francis Fest must be leashed or in a carrier. The program will include two songs, “All Things Bright and Beautiful” and “He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands,” along with prayers. It will conclude with a small treat. “We will give out dog treats and cat treats, and we’ll have animal crackers for the humans,” Seras said.

Donations will be accepted at the event for Pet Pantry of Lancaster County. Suggested items for donation include dry or canned food, toys, kitty litter and gift cards. For more information on Francis Fest, call the church office at 717-665-6584.

Women’s Group To Begin 35th Year

The 35th year of Neighbors Sharing and Caring will start on Tuesday, Oct. 11, at Chiques Church, 4045 Sunnyside Road, Manheim. Women of all ages and preschool children are invited to attend from 9 to 10:45 a.m. The gathering will include devotions, special music, and a brunch.

This year, the group will explore how God created people not by chance but in His image; to praise, honor, and glorify Him; to fellowship with Him; to do good works; to love their neighbors and to be His hands and feet; to have unique gifts and talents; and to become more like Christ day by day.

Center Plans Fall Events

Governor Dick Environmental Center, 3283 Pinch Road, Mount Gretna, will offer three programs. A Moonlight Hike will step off at 8 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 7. Participants should wear sturdy shoes and bring a light.

Damsels and Dragons will be held on Saturday, Oct. 8, at 1:30 p.m. The program will explore the beauty of dragonflies and damselflies with expert Tony Schoch.

A fitness hike will take place on Sunday, Oct. 9, at 10 a.m. Participants will give their bodies a workout with this faster hike in the autumn woods.

Tennis Team Posts a 16-0 Regular Season Record

The girls’ tennis team wrapped up a perfect 16-0 regular season.

“A lot of things have to go right for you to run the table…but our kids were locked in most nights,” said head coach Kurtis Funk.

“I absolutely love this team,” added

Funk, “We have created a winning culture at Manheim and our senior heavy team is reaping the rewards.”

The winning came in the form of a 4-1 victory over Penn Manor on the 21st and continued with a 7-0 win over Garden Spot on the 23rd, a Section Two title clinching 6-1 win over Elizabethtown on the 26th and

the perfect season securing 5-0 win over Cedar Crest on the 28th.

BOYS’ SOCCER

As any sports fan knows, wins are hard, and milestone wins typically take the difficulty to another level. Case in point would be the Manheim Central boys’ soccer team and their 26-1 mark with head coach Rod Brenize on the cusp of 100 career wins but struggling to hit the mark.

The skipper sits at 99 wins after a 4-0 victory over Cedar Crest on the 21st but a 2-1 setback to LampeterStrasburg on the 27th kept Brenize from cracking the triple digit club.

Central saw three players strike against the Falcons with Drew Greiner pushing the lead to 3-0 and 4-0 just after the second half started. Aaron Cassel and Gabe Redcay put Manheim up 2-0 with late first half goals.

Against the Pioneers, Manheim pulled out to a 1-0 lead when Redcay found Wesley Bates in the 45th minute but Lampeter-Strasburg was able to steal the win in overtime. Dylan Smith finished with six saves.

GOLF

The golf team trekked north on Route 72 to Fairview Golf Course for the L-L Championship on September 26th. The Barons finished 9th as a team with Zach Benner and Ryan Snavely posting the top scores. Benner finished at 86 while Snavely followed one shot back with a round of 87. Cayden Schwebel carded a 91.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

It was one step forward and two steps back for the Manheim Central

girls’ soccer team. The Lady Barons picked up their third straight win on the 21st before back-to-back losses dropped Central to 6-5 on the year.

That win came via a 2-0 final over Solanco with Lexi Wettig recording the shutout with six saves. Lizzie Voegele put Manheim up early with Abbie Reed tacking on an insurance goal just before intermission. Aubrey Myers set up the Voegele score while Katie White dished out Reed’s goal.

The first of the two steps back came on the 24th via a 2-0 loss to Twin Valley while Lampeter-Strasburg handed out a 3-1 loss on the 27th for the second step back. Wettig took both losses with Mikayla Beck accounting for the score against L-S with help from Micayla Moyer.

CROSS COUNTRY

The Manheim Central cross-country team notched another big race tune-up on the 24th, taking part in the Carlisle Invitational.

“Overall, it was a solid day for our athletes. Everyone ran a season best on a fast course,” said head coach Ryan Kennedy. “More than the times, I was happy with our athletes for sticking to their race plans and running tough in the second half of the race.”

The result was a 66th place finish for the boys in the Challenge Race with Julie Lindberg and Jenna Moffett taking part in the 202-member Girl’s Champion Race. Lindberg finished 54th while Moffett captured the 81st spot.

Carter Bruckhart (208th18:33.4), Cameron Evans (227th - 18:48.8) and Carson Brooks (250th - 19:16.2) led the way for the boys. Caleb

Creviston (288th - 20:24.5) and Caleb Bower (300th - 21:29.80) rounded out the top five.

The Barons returned to L-L action on the 27th facing off against Garden Spot and Ephrata. The Lady Barons earned the lone win on the day, topping Spot 21-37 while falling to Ephrata, 20-37. Regan Ibach was the top Lady Baron finishing fourth. Lindberg (6th) and Moffett (9th) also finished inside the top 10.

The boys also had three runners inside the top ten with Bruckhart leading the way with a 5th place time of 18:44. Evans (9th) and Brooks (10th) completed the top ten trio, but Manheim dropped to both Ephrata (21-37) and Garden Spot (24-32).

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

The girls’ volleyball team continues to trend up, picking up a 3-0 win over Lebanon on the 21st with a silver medal finish at the Baron Classic, their own tournament, on the 24th.

Manheim was pushed a bit against Lebanon but still managed wins of 25-18, 25-12 and 25-22 to post their fifth sweep of the season. Addy Doerschuk posted 20 assists with Natalie Siegrist tallying eight kills. Kaylee Dougherty chipped in with 10 digs and Aslin Latkovich three aces.

The Lady Barons cruised through pool play in the 2022 Baron Classic, going 8-1 against Berwick, Brandywine Heights, and Covenant Christian Academy. A win over Cedar Crest in the semifinals set up a final match with Greencastle-Antrim that went to the Lady Blue Devils, leaving Manheim to settle for second.

FIELD HOCKEY

The mark of a champion is often

how you respond to adversity. For the field hockey team that adversity came on the 22nd where a 2-1 overtime loss to Lampeter-Strasburg snapped Manheim’s three-game winning streak.

Central struck first with Monica Herman converting a penalty stroke in the opening quarter. LampeterStrasburg knotted the game in the third before securing the win in the extra period. Laci Nelson finished with six saves.

The response came on the 26th with a 4-1 victory over Elizabethtown. Nelson needed just four saves to lockup the win thanks to a quartet of Lady Barons’ scorers- Paige Garner, Kiley Hosler, Ella Brubaker, and Herman.

FOOTBALL

Five games into the 2022 season and the football team appears headed for a season-ending, first place showdown with Exeter. The Barons, after a 47-13 victory over Warwick on the 23rd, are a pristine 5-0, same as the Eagles of Exeter. The two squads close out the regular season in Manheim on October 28 where a section title could be on the line.

The Barons might have more grand goals, but they did not overlook the Warriors, racking up a 384241 yardage edge. That was thanks mostly to Brycen Armold and his 201 yards rushing. Zac Hahn finished a tidy eight for 13 with 117 yards and three touchdowns. Those three scores went to three different players, Bode Sipel (2-36), Sonny Callahan (1-55) and Rocco Daugherty (2-14), with Jaden Weit and Hahn capping the scoring with TD runs of their own.

“It’s a simple maze, but it’s fun. We give out a map and an aerial photo for people to use as a guide, and they can use those tools if they want to, or they can navigate the maze on their own,” explained Angie Havice, coordinator of the event. She noted that although the maze contains several dead ends, encountering one isn’t a setback. “Everyone will get a prize at the start and at the finish of the maze, and there are six dead-end stations throughout the maze, where someone will be stationed to give out a prize to collect,” she said.

Throughout the church’s parking lot, decorated cars will be set up, with families giving out small prizes as well. Havice noted that the church originally held a carnivalstyle event in the parking lot before the creation of the corn maze, and that activity eventually morphed into the Disguise & Prize event.

“Creating the corn maze really opened the doors to creativity for people who wanted to decorate their car,” she noted. “Everyone who decorates a car comes up with a theme and then tries to have an activity that goes with that theme, something that will be more interactive than just getting candy.” In the past, she noted, a car with a Hawaiian theme featured a limbo game, while a car with a construction theme was accompanied by a pebble-filled sandbox game.

“We try to make the stations varied in activities that would appeal to kids from toddler age up through elementary school-age kids,” Havice noted, “but really, this is for the whole family. There’s something for everyone to enjoy.” Previous years have included more than 10 decorated cars and stations, she said, adding, “It’s really amazing how creative people can get.”

Children are encouraged to come in “disguise,” or costume, but it is not required, Havice emphasized. “Come as you are,” she said. “Some people come in really elaborate costumes, while other people come in no disguise at all, but everyone enjoys the activities.”

She noted that Jerusalem Church holds the annual event as a way to connect with the community and to provide a fun family outing. “We want to communicate through this event that we care about families,” Havice remarked. “This is something we can

do that is unique, and it’s something that’s been appreciated by the community. We’ve always had a good turnout, and people tend to stay for a while. This is a safe, no-cost event. Our church wants to cultivate strong families, and the way to do that is to spend time together as a family.”

A Big Show In A Small Space

Jordan Scott Gilbert, director of the Cavod Theatre production of “A Tale of Two Cities,” thinks that staging the musical in the small theater will only enhance the telling. “It’s a big show that we are trying to make intimate in this small space, which is great for storytelling,” said Gilbert, who was the assistant producer of the show on Broadway. Gilbert chose “A Tale of Two Cities” along with Cavod artistic director Monica DePaul and Connie Dienner, director of Cavod Performing Arts.

“A Tale of Two Cities” will be presented at the Cavod Theatre, 641 W. Main St., New Holland, with a special opening night themed dinner theater at 6 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 14. Cocktail attire is requested for this red carpet event. The show will also be performed at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 21; at 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturdays, Oct. 15 and 22; and at 4 p.m. on Sundays, Oct. 16 and 23.

“A Tale of Two Cities” with book, music, and lyrics by Jill Santoriello is based on Charles Dickens’ 1859 novel that tells the tale of a love triangle. The story focuses on the beautiful Lucie Manette, played by

Jackie Zliczewski; French aristocrat Charles Darnay, played by Alexander Weaver; and English cynic Sydney Carton, played by Bryant Martin. Walter Winston O’Neill, who took part in the Broadway production, will play Dr. Manette. Alicia Burton will play Miss Pross, and Hannah Rau will portray Madame Defarge. Set during the French Revolution, the story encompasses love and

redemption in a way that parallels Cavod’s mission. The show is choreographed by Stephanie Brooks Martin, with musical direction by Amy Rau. Glen Brodersen of Sight & Sound Theatre is handling the set.

Calling the show “vocally challenging,” Gilbert relayed that the cast is doing a “really awesome job.” “There are some cast members who are perfect for their roles,” he noted of the

cast of nearly 30. “My point of view with the storyline is God working in people, specifically the lead character (of Sydney Carton) to bring him to a place of faith,” continued Gilbert. “I think it will be very moving and show the audience the depths people will go to save those that they love.”

Dienner said that the show is a bit different for Cavod because there are dark moments. “It can be hard to find shows with redemptive meaning,” she said, adding, “To show the redemption, you have to show the evil.” Dienner said the show is for mature audiences and parental discretion is advised. She compared the show to another classic by Victor Hugo, “Les Miserables.” “It has a lot of the same feel (because) it’s speaking from the heart,” said Dienner.

Since 1940, National Newspaper Week has been observed the first full week in October, so I thought it appropriate to share my thoughts on why supporting your local newspaper is more important than ever.

It’s a popular notion that the internet has marked the downfall of community newspapers. And, while many have stopped publishing due to tough economic times, the rising cost of newsprint, and other factors, your community newspapers can do something the internet can’t: We promote connections at a local level. Some say that because people can tweet, blog, surf, shop, and search online, no one reads newspapers anymore, but you just proved that to be a myth. Rather

than being replaced by all the noise of “instant” media, your free local paper has become more important than ever. We are a part of your neighborhood. We shine a spotlight on people and organizations that make your town a better place to live, work, and play. No, they probably won’t get a million views on TikTok, but they are heroes who live down the street and are making a positive difference in our community.

In the past year the publisher of this newspaper, Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC) has featured more than 1,500 front-page articles benefiting more than 1,000 local nonprofit organizations in Lancaster, Chester, Berks, York, and Dauphin counties. Those numbers don’t take into account the thou-

sands of press releases that make their way into our papers each year.

With all the talk about social media, why do we continue to publish free community newspapers? It’s who we are and who we’ve been for nearly 70 years. We live here, too, and we want to keep our communities thriving as much as you do.

New cars have been costly for quite some time, but those costs have spiked considerably since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. That unprecedented rise may lead many motorists to wonder how they can get more mileage out of their existing vehicles. According to data from Kelley Blue Book and Cox Automotive, the average cost of a new car in September 2021 was just over $45,000. That marked a $3,000 increase from June 2021 and a $5,000 increase from the end of 2020.

Drivers who may not be able to afford the cost of a new vehicle can take the following steps to keep their existing cars running smoothly for years to come.

- Take care of the timing belt. Engines may get all the glory, but they cannot run smoothly without a fully functional timing belt, which helps to synchronize movements of various components. Owner’s manuals may note when to replace the timing belt, but they generally must be replaced every 60,000 to 105,000 miles. Although replacement is required infrequently, drivers can ask their mechanics to keep an eye on their timing belts. During the early months of the pandemic, many people learned that infrequent driving can cause a timing belt to fail before it reaches the projected mile marker. Aging drivers should keep this fact in mind if they do not drive as much as they used to.

- Take care of the brakes and associated components. The experts at Popular Mechanics urge drivers of older vehicles to replace their brake fluid every two years. Popular Mechanics also advises drivers whose cars are more than seven years old to replace the rubber brake lines when major brake work is required.

- Pay attention to oil levels. The older engines get, the more oil they burn. For this reason, owners of older vehicles should check their oil levels more often than they would if their vehicles were brand new. These checks also provide a way to discover leaks before they lead to potentially significant issues.

- Don’t skip maintenance appointments. Even if you’re still driving less due to the pandemic, it’s best to keep up with maintenance

on any car, especially if the car is older. Routine tune-ups and oil changes, which may need to become more frequent the older the vehicle gets, can keep cars running smoothly and protect the engine over the long haul.

The rising cost of new cars may compel people to keep their cars longer than they might have anticipated. A few simple maintenance measures may help to prolong the life of a vehicle.

Headlight glare becomes dangerous when visibility is impaired to a point where the risk of accidents is heightened. Glare is a growing problem for many modern drivers due to the increased use of light emitting diodes in headlights.

Driving at night is challenging because pedestrians, cars and other obstacles are difficult to see once the sun sets, and headlight glare can cause further problems. A study from the U.S. Department of Transportation found that 88% of drivers noticed LED and HID headlight glare. While LED lights may not actually be brighter, their “cool” color temperature can make them appear so. Studies have found that blue and white light tends to hit people’s eyes harder, especially at night.

In addition, human eyes do not adjust to changes in lighting very quickly, according to Pierre Paul Driving School in New York City. The older a person gets, the longer his or her eyes take to adjust to

changes in lighting. In fact, it can take up to seven seconds to recover from the blinding glare of headlights. That’s enough time to swerve off the road or potentially hit something. While glare can be problematic, drivers can take steps to make nighttime driving safer.

- Clean the windshield. Dirt and grime found on the windshield can refract light and make glare worse. Therefore, clean all windows and mirrors thoroughly, inside and out. - Repair scratches and cracks. Glare can be exacerbated by any imperfections in the windshield. Repair cracks or scratches promptly.

- Get a vision and health check. Changes to vision can impact how glare affects certain individuals. Vitamin A deficiency can cause night blindness, also known as nyctalopia. Eye shape changes, including a condition called keratoconus, can affect vision. Cataracts and diabetes can also impair vision. Visit a primary care physician as well as an

eye doctor to check for conditions that can make night vision worse.

- Change your line of sight. Do not look directly into oncoming headlights. Rather, look slightly down and to the right side of the road so that you are not focusing on the beams.

- Get glare-resistant coatings on eyeglasses. Speak with an optician about eyeglasses with a coating that can reduce the amount of glare.

VisionCenters.com says standard plastic lenses reflect around 8% of the light that reaches glasses, while high-index lenses reflect up to 12% of available light. Anti-glare coating allows 99.5% of available light to reach the eyes, essentially eliminating glare. Those who don’t wear eye-

glasses can purchase special antiglare glasses to wear in high-glare conditions, such as when looking at computer and phone screens.

- Flip your rearview mirror to night mode, if you have this option. This setting will make it appear as though lights coming from behind are dimmer.

- Take breaks. When glare makes driving difficult, take a break to help your eyes recover.

These are some of the steps people may take when glare becomes problematic while driving at night.

Garden Railways Tour Planned

The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania will offer the 15th annual Garden Railways Tour on Sunday, Oct. 9, from 1 to 5 p.m.

The self-guided tour for people of all ages will feature operating model trains in various outdoor and garden settings. Attendees may choose from among seven stops located in Wrightsville, Lancaster, Coatesville, Lititz and Manheim.

Garden railways are a fast-growing interest area in model railroading. Garden railways may be set up in very small spaces or large

expanses, as well as in differing climates and in widely varying degrees of complexity.

Tickets must be obtained in advance for all attendees. There is a fee per person for those age 6 and over, and children age 5 and under will be admitted free of charge. To purchase tickets, search for “Garden Railways Tour” on Eventbrite; tickets will not be sold at the individual tour sites.

Library Program To Focus On News

As a PA Forward Gold Star library, Manheim Community Library, along with PA NewsMedia Association, a PA Forward Partner, will host a program on fake news.

Paul Vigna from a local news source will be in the community room at the library, 15 E. High St., on Thursday, Oct. 13, at 6:30 p.m. to talk about how to navigate and filter information on social media to prioritize credible sources and information. This program is open to people of all ages, although it is best suited for teens and adults.

The program highlights PA Forward’s information literacy: the ability to express, connect with, and understand communication in numerous formats; to locate, evaluate, and use effectively and ethically resources of information; to distinguish between credible and non-credible sources; and to recognize when information is needed to further oneself, an objective, or a project.
