Fun for all at the Manheim Farm Show
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Forfive days this month, Manheim will be “Growing the Future.” That’s the theme of the 69th annual Manheim Farm Show, which will be held from Monday, Oct. 9, through Friday, Oct. 13, at 502 Adele Ave.
Many returning favorite activities will be featured this year, along with a variety of new exhibits, contests and events, said Tracy Zimmerman, one of the Farm Show directors.
“New this year, we are having a Christmas tree competition to spotlight local growers,” she said, noting that a similar event is held at the Pennsylvania Farm Show. “We are also having a Lego contest,
and we’re celebrating 100 years of Case Farmall tractors.”
For the first time, Lebanon residents will be eligible to enter certain contests, and free make-and-take craft activities will be offered in

the evenings for adults. Tuesday, Oct. 10, will feature screen painting with Paul Dorr, who will instruct people on transforming screens into works of art. On Thursday, Oct. 12, Carol White will teach
acrylic painting, and the Lancaster County WoodCarvers will host a drop-in carve event.
“We are holding a cornhole tournament on several days throughout the week,” Zimmerman stated. “We’ll have a tent set up in the baseball field, and we’ll have a celebrity night, an open class for people age 16 and older, a senior event and an event for clubs from Manheim Central High School to compete against each other.”
Monday evening’s activities will include a Children’s Parade at 6:15 p.m. and the crowning of Farm Show royalty at 7 p.m. On Tuesday, a pedal tractor pull for people of all ages will be held at 6:45 p.m. Wednesday evening will

More than 1,000 men and women from the Manheim area served in World War II, and now you can honor that service. The Manheim Veterans Memorial Committee is selling engraved bricks for a Path of Honor

“The Ten Commandments tell us how to love God and how to love others,” said Angie Havice, a member of Jerusalem Church in Manheim. Now you can immerse yourself in that message during the church’s ninth community corn maze, which will feature the words, “love God love others” cut into the paths of corn stalks.
The corn maze will be open to the public during the church’s Disguise & Prize event on Saturday, Oct. 7, from 1 to 4 p.m. The rain
date will be Sunday, Oct. 8, from 1 to 4 p.m.
Children are encouraged to come in costume to visit decorated vehicles in the church’s parking lot, 1620 Newport Road, Manheim, to receive small prizes and play games.
“We will have decorated cars that will hand out prizes like Trunk or Treat, but a lot of our cars will also have activities,” Angie said. “This year, one of the stations will have flying frogs. Other activities in the past have included bean bag tosses, art stations, guessing games, etc.”

“We have been overwhelmed by the public’s support of our efforts, particularly their interest in honoring the service of veterans with memorial bricks,” said George Schwartz, chair of the See Farm Show pg 3

committee, noting that the committee is advocating for more recognition of the Greatest Generation. “We offer a discounted brick just for World War II veterans, and we can help brick donors pick individuals from the list.”
Schwartz noted that three people have been especially generous in supporting the project. Manheim resident Susan Wettig purchased some bricks for family members, but when she heard about the World War II effort, she had her grandsons and their friends pick names from the list, and she has purchased more bricks. “One of her grandsons is dedicating a brick for Richard Connelly, who was killed in action on the USS Arizona during Pearl Harbor, making him the first Manheim resident to be killed in action,” Schwartz stated. “Her total brick purchases are now over $1,000.”
Local business owners Chris and Jan Marie Blouch, who operate Cabal’s Lair in Manheim, have also purchased $1,000 worth of bricks specifically honoring World War II veterans.
The Blouches first purchased one brick for a veteran plus a larger brick for their business after learning about the project earlier this year. They soon decided to honor even more veterans, and they asked Schwartz for the list, selecting names based on their own preferred lucky numbers.
“We thought it might be a nice way to get the word out and maybe get other people or businesses in the local area to do the same,” Jan Marie remarked. “I just believe that every fallen soldier deserves to have their name mentioned. … It was important for us to step in and help out a little bit and honor those who put their lives on the line for our freedom.”
So far, about 400 bricks have been purchased for the 1,000 World War II veterans, Schwartz said. The project will be ongoing as long as there is space for engraved bricks in the walkway.
“We consider everyone who purchases a brick to be enlisted in the ‘Baron Brick Brigade,’” he said. “Anyone who joins the Brick Brigade can also request a certificate that we will email to them. Some people purchase a brick as a gift, and this provides them with something they can present to a veteran.”

“To me, it’s a chance to see old friends,” she remarked. “You can never move quickly through the exhibits, becaue you’re always running into people you haven’t seen since last year, and you’re picking up right where you left off until your kids drag you off to see the animals.”

place on Sunday, Oct. 8, at 1:30 p.m. Adults and children are invited to participate. There is a fee per participant. For both activities, preregistration is required by contacting 717-964-3808 or governordick@hotmail.com and providing a name and phone number in case the program is canceled.
Church sets family event
Trinity Evangelical Congregational Church, 48 Market Square, Manheim, will present a Fall Family Fun event on Wednesday, Oct. 11, from 5 to 7 p.m. before the Manheim Farm Show Parade.
We encourage civic and fraternal groups, schools, churches, scouts, and other local organizations to submit news releases of general interest to the majority of our readership. Primary consideration is given to dated articles of an informative nature–activities and events of local interest sponsored, presented, or planned by area organizations and institutions.
The event, which is free for the community, will include free popcorn, water and cookies. There will also be a mini-pumpkin craft for the whole family.
Attendees are invited to stay in town and enjoy the parade.
It takes a team of volunteers to create the corn maze, which was plotted and mapped out by Angie’s husband, Kevin Havice.
“This was the most letters we have ever done, so mapping it out took a while, especially connecting the letters for the maze,” Angie stated.
She noted that the corn grew very fast during the process of creating the maze, and when the group was ready to tackle the project in July, they faced a summer heatwave. “No one wanted to be stuck in the cornfield measuring, holding flags and cutting corn with machetes in 90-plus degree weather with high humidity,” she recalled. They waited for slightly cooler weather, but the corn had grown even higher then, so it took about 15 people several hours to cut and plot the maze.
“Everyone was ready for water and showers after the maze was completed,” she said with a laugh. Church member Bruce Becker maintains the maze from
the time it is cut until the day of the event.
Angie said holding an event like Disguise & Prize helps the church members stay connected to their community. “Our church values families, and we want to provide a no-cost, family fun activity for our community,” she remarked. “We also feel blessed to have the opportunity to use the resource of our land in a unique way.”
She hopes anyone who is interested will come out for the event, adding, “This event can be enjoyed by all ages. It is a simple corn maze, which is ideal for younger people’s attention spans and is also valuable to those that don’t have the ability to walk in a corn maze for a long distance. You can stay as long or as short as you like. Some people walk through the corn maze quickly while others visit every vehicle, walk through the corn maze and spend time enjoying the outdoors.”
If the event needs to be rescheduled due to weather, information will be posted on the church’s Facebook page as well as on a recorded message that can be accessed by calling the church at 717-665-6565.

In today’s world, saving money is often a top priority for consumers, and bills paid at the gas pump are no exception. Drivers can follow a few simple tips to help save money on gas.
Lighten the load. How much weight is being carted around in a vehicle can directly affect the amount of gas it consumes. Remove any unnecessary items from the trunk or cargo area of a truck or SUV. Consider removing extra accessories, like roof racks or hitches.
Accelerate slowly. Resist the urge to gun it when beginning to move after a
Drivers play a vital role in vehicle maintenance. Although diagnosing and fixing car problems is often best left to professionals, drivers who learn to recognize warning signs of various problems can prevent breakdowns and potentially costly repairs. Problems with the brake system are among the issues that drivers may learn to recognize.
Television shows and movies have lent credence to the notion that brake problems are marked by the sudden loss of a vehicle’s ability to stop. Although that can happen, warning signs of fading brake systems tend to be more subtle.
Certain noises are one of the signs that brakes may be failing. The most noticeable of these signs is a high-pitched squeal that occurs when drivers apply the brakes. Grinding sounds and noises like scratching and scraping also warrant a visit to a brake specialist.
Drivers may also notice an increase in the distance a vehicle travels before it stops after the brakes are applied. This issue may or may not require a brake replacement. In fact, it sometimes indicates that brake fluid levels are low, which can be remedied quickly and easily. However, an increase in stopping distance is significant enough that it should be brought to the attention of a brake specialist immediately.
Another warning sign of brake problems is that the vehicle noticeably pulls to one side as it comes to a stop.
