Chiques Church of the Brethren, 4045 Sunnyside Road, Manheim, will offer God’s Squad from 6:45 to 8:30 p.m. every other Thursday from Oct. 17 to March 19, 2020, except Nov. 28 and Dec. 26. During the same time, the church will also host the junior high youth group for students in sixth through eighth grades. God’s Squad, for children in kindergarten through fifth grade, features Bible lessons, activities, crafts, snacks, songs and games. Advance registration is not required. The morning session will be from 10 to 11:30 a.m., with the afternoon session from 1 to 3 p.m. Attendees will learn how to make German paper stars in the morning session and German paper porcupine balls in the afternoon session. Participants are invited to attend one or both sessions. Costs have been set per session or for both sessions, with proceeds benefiting the society. Registration must be received by Saturday, Nov. 2, and may be completed by calling 717-665-7989. Anyone age 13 or over is welcome.

Young Farmers, FFA To Collect Donations By Chelsea Peifer

The Manheim Community Farm Show, a beloved tradition now entering its 66th year, is set to take place from Monday, Oct. 7, through Friday, Oct. 11, at 502 E. Adele Ave., Manheim. Parking and admission are free. After 5 p.m., visitors are encouraged to park at Manheim Brethren in Christ (BIC) Church, 54 N. Penryn Road, Manheim, and ride a free shuttle to the Farm Show. On Wednesday, Oct. 9, the Farm Show Parade will step off at 7 p.m. Keeping with tradition, a tractor and wagon driven and occupied by members of the Manheim Young Farmers will be toward the end of the parade lineup to collect nonperishable food items for the Manheim Central Food Pantry. The

annual food drive has been sponsored by the Manheim Young Farmers since 2005. Individuals of all ages may donate canned goods during the parade or drop them off at the shopping cart that will be designated for donations at the Manheim Children’s Farm Show exhibit area during Farm Show week. Items needed for the food pantry include canned chicken, canned tuna, Spam, baked beans, cereal, crackers, peanut butter, jelly, canned fruits and vegetables, dried pasta, spaghetti sauce, and soup. Students in the Manheim Central High School (MCHS) FFA will walk in the parade with members of the Manheim Young Farmers to help collect donations from people along the parade route. As part of ag-in-the-classroom education, paper bags will be sent home the week before the parade with thirdgraders in the Manheim Central School District, along with a note explaining See Farm Show pg 6

Candace Abel started making her own soaps and lotions when she was on a quest to find healthier products to use for her youngest son, who has a critical form of a blood disorder known as thalassemia, which requires intensive medication and gene therapy for survival. “I thought, ‘If we can put better things on the table, then we can put better things on our bodies, too,’” recalled Candace.
