The mission of the Manheim
Historical Society is to preserve the past but also bring it to life for people in the present. The organization will put that mission into action when it hosts Kid’s Day on Saturday, Sept 27. The event will be held at the Keath and Fasig log homes, 32 E. High St., Manheim, from 9:30 a.m. to noon.
The program invites children ages 8 to 11 to explore hands-on history in the historic setting of the homes, which date to Colonial times.
“Children will be making crafts, soft pretzels, corn husk dolls and playing games from the 1700s,” said Susan Williams, president of the historical society. “This will show children what their counterparts did in the 1700 Colonial time period.”
Williams noted that focusing on activities for children allows the historical society to support its mission of reaching a wide audience.
“We have always looked for ways to educate the public of all ages,” she remarked. “Our mission statement

As summer turns into fall, Waltz Vineyards prepares to celebrate one of the most important times of the year, the harvest. The family-owned Manheim-based winery will host its annual Harvest Festival on Sunday, Sept. 21, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the vineyard, 1599 Old Line Road. A rain date is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 28. The festival, now in its second year, will bring

Trustworthy and loyal, Scouts always remain true to themselves. No matter where one goes, a Scout is always a Scout.
But never is a Scout more a Scout than when she or he is camping at J. Edward Mack Scout Reservation.
“I’m sure there are some places where kids can make crafts or practice archery,” said Matt Klutzaritz, the Scout executive for the Pennsylvania Dutch Council of Scouting America, which oversees the operation of Camp Mack. “But to be able to do it all in one spot is kind of our attraction. Kids earn advancement through progression. One thing we know about kids is that you don’t want to rain on their advancements. That keeps them in the program. Their parents see them becoming good people. What we’re doing is building the leaders of tomorrow. We’re building good people, we’re building good parents and we’re building good employees.”
Located at 2 Scout Lane, Newmanstown, in Elizabeth Township, on the border between Lancaster County and Lebanon County, J. Edward Mack Scout Reservation is 1,100 Furnace Hill acres of trees, wildlife, nature and the great outdoors. The facility includes a lake, a pool, 25 miles of hiking trails, a shooting range, a dining hall, 11 camp sites for tenting under the stars and five cabins.
“The kids love the pool, especially in the middle of the summer,” said Klutzaritz. “If you asked five kids what their favorite thing about Camp Mack is, at least three of them are going to give you different answers.

together wine lovers, families and community members for an afternoon filled with food, music and hands-on vineyard fun. Guests will have the chance to take part in a time-honored tradition: grape stomping.
“Our Harvest Festival celebrates the year’s harvest and the culmination of all our hard work in the vineyard,” said Lexe Waltz, marketing and events manager at Waltz Vineyards. “We love sharing this special time of year by bringing our community together to enjoy grape stomping and a celebratory toast to the harvest season.”
In addition to grape stomping, the event will feature food trucks offering gourmet charcuterie, kettle corn and other festival favorites. Live music will be provided

Douglas Seaman, who was diagnosed with kidney disease in August of 2020, is seeking a kidney donor. Seaman, age 62, is a life-long resident of East Hanover Township in Dauphin County.
Seaman is currently on the transplant list at UPMC Harrisburg. However, due to the number of people on the transplant list at this time, it may take five or more years
to obtain a kidney for transplant. Seaman noted that healthy adults may donate one of their kidneys and still have a long life.
For more information about becoming a kidney donor, call UPMC Harrisburg at 717-231-8757.

In Lancaster County and Lebanon County, we have natural resources. But kids who live in towns and cities don’t get a chance to do this stuff; they don’t get a chance to be in the woods.”
Among the favorite activities at Camp Mack are fishing, boating, swimming, archery, BB-gun shooting, crafts, human foosball, bike riding, pedal cars and campfires. There are no televisions at Camp Mack, and the cell phone reception is spotty at best, but the facility does offer Wi-Fi.

part in the festivities,” Waltz said. “Another highlight is sharing the harvest and winemaking process with our guests, who get to explore our equipment and chat directly with the winemakers.”
Waltz Vineyards began after sixth-generation Lancaster County farmer Jim Waltz and his wife, Kimberly, looked for ways to use the site and produce a product that they could share with people across the world. Their backgrounds in agriculture, family business and marketing set them up for success as they transitioned from a traditional farm that produced tobacco, corn, soybeans and wheat into
round but mostly visited during the warmer months.
“Throughout the year, things are happening there,” said Klutzaritz, a resident of West Hempfield Township. “Primarily, the use of that property is for our Cub Scouts. Some of the Cub Scouts are camping for the first time.”
At the height of the summer, as many as 250 Cub Scouts - boys and girls from kindergarten to fifth grade - frequent Camp Mack each week. Overall, thousands of people visit Camp Mack each year, including Boy Scout troops and other groups from all over Lancaster County and Lebanon County and as far away as Harrisburg and Allentown.

an award-winning vineyard.
Although the farm still produces some traditional crops, its focus is the vineyard. In 2000, the Waltzes handcrafted their first wine in their garage, and over the years, they have perfected the art of making wines created from hand-picked fruit.
Waltz invites anyone who is interested in learning more about the grape harvest to come out for an afternoon of entertaining and informative activities.
“Expect a fun, educational community event,” she said. “And good wine, of course!”

The J. Edward Mack Scout Reservation is the only Scouting America camp in Lancaster County and one of only a handful in the central Pennsylvania region.
“These young people are boys and girls,” said Klutzaritz. “They’re simply youth who have decided Scouting has a program they want to participate in. They’re learning some skills they don’t even realize they’re learning. They’re learning through fun activities.”
The J. Edward Mack Scout Reservation was established in 1969 through a donation by Lancaster County businessman J. Edward Mack, himself a former Eagle
“I want people to know we’re here,” said Klutzaritz. “When I talk to people about Scouting, if they know about it, they have a very high opinion of Scouting. But there are a lot of people who can’t tell you anything about Scouting.”
The Pennsylvania Dutch Council, which is headquartered at 630 Janet Ave., Lancaster, is one of 248 Scouting America councils in the United States. The local chapter serves over 2,000 youths from Lancaster County and Lebanon County.
“Scouting helps young people become productive and valued members of society,” said Klutzaritz. “Scouting teaches you how to be a well-rounded person. Scouting teaches you things that schools can’t.”

and understanding of the earlier years and the children’s activities.”
The Manheim Historical Society celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2024. Founded in 1964, it began with a group of citizens who wanted to honor the town’s rich history. The founding members were Dr. Loy C. Awkerman, J. David Young, Harry Shearer, Herman Hart, George L. Heiges, Eugene Hollinger, Doris Hollinger and Herbert Obetz.
Over the years, the organization has expanded to include multiple properties and projects in Manheim. The society houses documents and other artifacts at the Heritage Center, located at 88 S. Grant St.; runs programs and hosts displays at the Manheim Railroad Station, 210 S. Charlotte St.; operates two historically accurate homes - the Fasig and Keath houses; and oversees Stiegel Glassworks, located next to the train station. Additionally, the historical society maintains a trolley car at the station and is responsible for bringing the historic Howard Street Clock to the square in Manheim. The society also holds various public events throughout the year.
On Thursday, Oct. 2, the society will host walking tours of Manheim, beginning at the Fasig and Keath houses. History tours will be offered at 5:30 and 6:30 p.m., and a ghost tour will be held at 7 p.m.
“The participants of each tour will learn about Manheim history and particular buildings and special stories,” Williams said. “We have dedicated tour guides to lead the tours. Enjoy the fun of walking the tour, learning some of the history and meeting other people of similar interests. We welcome all participants.”
People who are interested in the walking tour may sign up at the Fasig house 10 minutes before their preferred tour time. Tours are free, and they are weather dependent. Children who want to participate in the Kid’s Day must preregister and pre-pay by Friday, Sept. 19. Parents will need to sign a permission form for each child when they arrive for check-in.
