hen pastor Dan Hammer felt called to lead a church plant in Manheim, he trusted the Lord to see it through. “We’d been praying for years for this,” he said. “This is God at work. He’s opening doors. God opened a door and built a relationship. Visit the Manheim Historical Society’s railroad station on Sunday, Sept. 20, and you can travel through time when the organization hosts a 100th anniversary celebration for Conestoga Transportation Co. Trolley 236. The festivities will run from 1 to 4 p.m. at the station, 210 S. Charlotte St., Manheim. “ T his event is a wonder ful chance to experience a piece of Manheim’s history up close. Our 1926 Birney trolley has been part
of the community for a century, and this dedication celebrates both its past and its future,” said Peggy Cunha, chair of programs and services and coordinator of the programs and events committee. “Visitors can step inside the trolley, ride the trolley, meet the people who care for it and hear from experts who bring its story to life. It’s a rare opportunity to see local history in motion and to be part of a milestone that only comes around once every hundred years.” See Past pg 5

Ever wonder why the Lancaster Liederkranz holds its Oktoberfest in September? It’s based on tradition, going back to the first event in 1810, which marked a royal wedding celebration in Bavaria, Germany. The event was so popular, the king decided to hold it annually, and eventually the party began in September and ran all the way into October. While the local festivities won’t take place over many weeks, the event will still feature all of the fun, food and fellowship associated with the German celebration. A l p e n ro s e S c h u h p l a t t l e r Dancers will present the Lancaster Liederkranz Oktoberfest on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 18, 19 and 20. It will be held outside under the pavilion and tents at the German club, located at 722 S. Chiques Road, Manheim. The event will run from 5:30 to 11 p.m. on Friday, from 12:30 to 11 p.m. on Saturday and from noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday. Lancaster’s oldest traditional Oktoberfest, it will be a celebration of German food, beer, music, song and dance. “I like to say that three different types of fests go on over the weekend,” said Andy Deck, fest chair. “On Friday, we get a lot of couples who come out to eat and have a date night before the weekend. Saturday afternoon is a huge family day. It’s always super crowded. If you like to be a part of something big, in the middle of everything and all the action, Saturday is your day. Sunday is very old-school traditional. We get a lot of grandparents and their children and grandchildren.” New this year, organizers have expanded the size of the kids’ craft area, doubling the space, Deck said.

the Lancaster location of Mission Church, and they touted the benefits of the church plant. It was perfect timing. “We recently completed an expansion, with new classrooms and new bathrooms, and now that we had a better facility, we were eager to share it with the community,” Sauder said. “I was very quickly on board and sharing the idea of the church coming here with our decision makers.” It also helped that some of the faculty are members of the church, as well as some of the students. “God is knitting together a really cool story for Mission Church,” Hammer said. “The heart behind this plan is to reach the community. It takes all different types of churches to reach all different types of people. You can never have enough churches.” The mission of Mission Church is “to make disciples who live loved and sent to the glory of God,” Hammer said. “We want to create disciples who will spread the Gospel
and change lives for all who hear it.” With more than a dozen years as a senior pastor in Maryland, Hammer understands what’s needed for a successful church plant. He calls it the “four wheels of traction,” including a planter, people, a place and provision. “None of this could happen without God,” he said, of the conversations about the new church which began this spring. “It’s all His grace, all His glory.” He’s excited about a partnership between the church and the school beyond Sunday mornings. Recently, Mission Church members provided lunch and notes of encouragement to faculty and staff for a preschool-year in-service day. Sauder is also looking forward to benefits of bringing the church into the school. “We’re here to expand God’s kingdom, and we have a mission to do that for the students and their families,” he said. “For this space to have a mission beyond the school day is really exciting.”
More than 100 Mission Church members will be making the move to Manheim, and Hammer invites anyone who’s interested in learning more to come out on Oct. 4. “We’re blessed to be a blessing,” he said, paraphrasing Genesis 12. “We want to bless the community locally with a Gospel impact that reaches out globally.” He’s hoping this plant will help the church continue to expand into the Harrisburg area and beyond. The nondenominational church has a student ministry and small group programs, and there is a place for everyone, Hammer said. “Our goal is to glorify God and that every single person that comes in, whether they make this their home church or not, knows that God loves them, and we love them,” he said. “We truly want to live a ‘You are loved’ culture.” Perfection is not expected at Mission Church, he emphasized. “We want you to come as

“We recognize that this is turning into a big family event, so we wanted to add more to this area,” he explained. On Saturday, a highlight of the festivities is the stein holding contest. There will be several age groups, with divisions for men and women in each group. Winners will proceed to the state competition. “To complete, you just hold a stein full of liquid straight out in front of you as long as possible,” Deck said. “Our

For two decades, trolley car No. 236 operated between Penn Square, the railroad station and Rocky Springs Park. It was built in St. Louis, Mo., by the American Car Co., a subsidiary of the Philadelphia-based J.G. Brill Co., and was known as the Birney Safety car. The car was retired in 1947 and nearly forgotten until it found its new home in Manheim in 1990. There, it was restored by the society to its current working condition. “The society uses it when we have our seasonal Sunday programs/events and other special occasions,” Cunha said. “Previously, its operation was weather-dependent, but by the September program, it is scheduled to be fully weather-protected.” Matt Nawn, executive director of the Baltimore Streetcar Museum, will serve as master of ceremonies for the ribbon-cutting dedication at 1 p.m. and will share insights about the trolley. “Confirmed VIP attendees include Sen. James Malone, Rep. Mindy Fee, mayor Scott Funk, Gary Russell from the Choo Choo Barn and several members of the Manheim Area Chamber of Commerce,” Cunha remarked. “Following the ceremony, Matt
will give a presentation inside, featuring a PowerPoint about the Birney trolley and other historic trolleys.” She encourages anyone with an interest in history or transportation to come to the event and to learn more about the society. “If you’ve never visited before, the Manheim Historical Society is the perfect place to discover the stories that shaped our town. The Railroad Station is one of Manheim’s hidden gems - home to the beautifully restored 1926 Birney trolley, a rare piece of local transportation history,” Cunha said. “It’s a welcoming, hands-on experience that lets you step right into the past. Business to Open Location in Manheim
Ar tisan Mill Co. has announced that it plans to open its third location in late October. The store will be located at 49 N. Main St. in Manheim, the town where owners Ian and Ashley Gantz grew up. Both were born and raised in Manheim Central and graduated from Manheim Central High School in 2004. Ar tisan Mill Co. is a m arke t pl ace fe atu r ing local artists, makers, and small businesses. It began in 2020 with its first location in Lititz and approximately 50 vendors. In May 2025, the company expanded to Lancaster, where it now has more than 180 vendors. Today, t h e b u s i n e s s fe a t u re s more than 300 vendors across its locations, with a growing waitlist of artists and makers interested in joining. The Manheim location is ex p e cte d to feature approximately 150 to 180 vendors, including both existing Artisan Mill Co. vendors and artists and businesses unique to the new location.
