On The Path To Success has provided opportunities for high school and adult education, career training and workforce development. The Pathways to Careers and Higher Education program just launched for the 2021-22 school year and will build a bridge between secondary and postsecondary education. It serves as an umbrella over the various postsecondary opportunities available to students, said Amber Kreger, director of higher and continuing education.

Brace yourself for the “silver tsunami.” That’s a term used to describe the predicted dearth of workers in the future as the current workforce ages into retirement. Through an innovative initiative, the Lancaster County Career and Technology Center (LCCTC), is equipping students to prepare for their future. For more than 50 years, LCCTC

Fall Harvest Event Will Offer Family Fun MC1

s summer winds down, the Manheim Area Chamber of Commerce has fall on its mind. The Chamber will host a Fall Harvest event from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 18, at Baron Elementary School, 123 E. Gramby St. The free event is one way for the Chamber to connect with the community, said Kristie Schmid, executive director. “We decided it was a great opportunity to bring something to Manheim that the whole family can enjoy,” she said. “We reached out to our membership - businesses and community organizations alike - to help us make this a free event. We

will have baked goods for sale and are bringing in the Twisted Sisters Ice Cream truck, but everything else will be free to enjoy.” The festivities will include two bounce houses, an inflatable obstacle course, a barrel wagon ride, fallthemed crafts, pumpkin decorating and more. A candy scramble will be held at 2 p.m. Mark DeRose, who performed for years with Steven Courtney and the Suitcase Musicians, will entertain at 1 and 2:30 p.m. The Fall Harvest event is sponsored by Pleasant View Communities and Harrington Hoists, and it will offer a family-friendly, funfilled afternoon, Schmid said. “We hear all the time that our community wants more events,
more reasons to bring people and families into Manheim,” she stated. “The Chamber is in a unique position to be able to bridge the gap between local businesses and the community by hosting events just like this one.” She said she hopes families will take advantage of the opportunity to celebrate the fall season and join the festivities. “We know fall weekends can be busy for families,” she noted. “Please make the time to join us. Your local businesses and organizations are working hard to make this a great event for everyone. We would love to see lots of smiling faces.” For more information, visit www.manheimchamber.com.

Manheim meant the world to Bea Myers Kreiner. “Manheim meant so much to her because she spent practically her entire life here, from graduation to a long teaching career,” said Denny Enck, a friend of Kreiner. “She was involved with many Manheim organizations.” Kreiner passed away in December 2020, and a celebration of life will be held on Sunday, Sept. 26, at the Manheim railroad station, 210 S. Charlotte St. The celebration will begin at 2 p.m.

Polera will perform a program of music and dance. This event replaces the concert featuring Conrad Tao and Caleb Teicher. Bacelar, Melvin, and Polera’s performance will include works by Bach, Chopin, Piazzolla, Rachmaninoff and Saint-Saëns. Gretna Music will close out its summer season on Sept. 18 with a joint performance by the Dalí Quartet and the Wister Quartet, both of which are based in Philadelphia. Each group will play a Beethoven string quartet and then come together to perform Felix Mendelssohn’s String Octet in E-Flat Major, Op 20. Before the quartets perform, West Shore Christian Academy student Kellen Mikesell, violinist, will perform at 6:45 p.m. as part of the First Listen series. First Listen provides local talented youths an opportunity to present mini-concerts before the mainstage concerts. These performances are free and open to the public. Tickets can be purchased by visiting www.gretnamusic.org or by calling 717-361-1508. Additional information about Gretna Music is available at the aforementioned website and www.facebook.com/ gretnamusic.

A 1962 graduate of Manheim Central High School, Kreiner returned to her alma mater in 1966. She spent 30 years teaching art at the school, where she touched the lives of countless students and encouraged many to pursue further education and careers in art. After retiring from teaching, she continued to serve her community by volunteering with numerous organizations including the Manheim Central Alumni Association, the Manheim Farm Show, Manheim Little Theatre, the Manheim Bicentennial Committee and the Manheim Central Student Loan Fund Association. Enck first got to know Kreiner when she was his art teacher in high school. “In later years, we served together on the Manheim Central Alumni Association,” he said. “We are both charter members of the Manheim Central Hall of Fame Board, and I worked closely with her on projects for the Manheim Historical Society.” The celebration of life will be hosted by Kreiner’s sisters, Anne Myers and Nancy Myers Blackwell, and will feature three speakers - Dennis Denenberg, Dan Barthold and Mike Clair - along with songs performed by Tim Hoffman. “After her passing, her oldest sister, Nancy, found some
notes left by Bea, and she listed the people she would like at her celebration to speak and sing,” Enck explained. “Dennis Denenberg and Mike Clair are both people she was involved with on various committees for many years, and Dan Barthold was an art stu-
dent of Bea’s.” At Kreiner’s encouragement, Barthold sought a career in art and is a longtime freelance artist from Manheim. Light refreshments will be served following the program. All arrangements are pending COVID restrictions.

Lancaster Dollars for Higher Learning (LDHL) recently awarded interest-free loans to 257 Lancaster County students to offset the cost of their post-secondary education for the 2021-22 school year. The recipients are applicants who demonstrated financial need. The interest-free loans varied from $850 each for students attending one semester only to $1,700 each for students attending a full academic year. LDHL awarded loans to nine single-semester students and 248 full-year students. The loans will be applied to tuition expenses at
by company donations. Weis Markets’ Fight Hunger Campaign works with regional food banks throughout its seven-state market area, including the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank in Harrisburg and Williamsport; Helping Harvest, Reading; Greater Berks FoodBank, Reading; and Philabundance in Montgomery and Bucks counties. These food banks and others help coordinate the program with local food pantries near each Weis Markets store. For more information, visit www.WeisMarkets.com or www.facebook.com/Weis Markets.
82 colleges and universities across the country. Since 1961, LDHL has partnered with donors each year to provide more than $18 million in interest-free loans to Lancaster County students seeking higher education. Loans are also made possible each year by the repayment of loans granted to previous recipients. LDHL is a not-for-profit organization with a mission to provide financial resources to Lancaster County residents in support of their postsecondary education goals. By offering funds to Lancaster County students on an annual basis, LDHL hopes to lessen the long-term expense for postsecondary education and training. To learn more, visit www.lancdollars.org.

said Mike Moeller, director of curriculum. LCCTC allows credit transfers for students in its high school automotive technology program into its AST associate degree program, and plans are in the works to add the school’s other two associate degree programs - veterinary technology and dental hygiene - to the credit transfer program as well. Moeller noted that programs like the ones offered at LCCTC are meeting the needs of today’s employers while also serving the students. “Over the last few years, schools have really begun to the see the value of career and technology education as a way to earn a great living and learn skills, but with very minimal college debt,” he said. “There are so many opportunities for jobs in these fields as well.” Kreger agreed, adding that Pathways allows students to come in with a specific plan and the end result in mind. “There is a set goal and finish line,” she said. “That goal may change slightly as they go through their program, but there is a finish line, and we are offering students ways to get there.” For more information on LCCTC or Pathways, visit https://lancasterctc.edu.

“This is a way to better serve our community of students by offering a pathway from what they are learning in high school directly into what they will learn in our adult program,” she explained. “The students are already in the same buildings as our adult learners. They cross paths often, so we thought, ‘Why not offer a program where the students can benefit from what we already do here?’” Under Pathways, students may earn Technical Institute in the High School credits, receive postsecondary credit transfers, participate in dual enrollment or earn credits through the state Students Occupationally and Academically Ready (SOAR) program. Pathways will allow students in senior-year programs the opportunity to accumulate credits that will follow them into higher education with partnering institutions. Higher learning partners include all community colleges throughout Pennsylvania as well as Delaware Valley University, Pennsylvania College of Technology and more. Students will also be able to work toward earning their Associate in Specialized Technology (AST) degree. “I’m really excited about what we’re doing with our associate degree programs,”

Advanced EMT Class Slated Northwest EMS and Elizabethtown College are teaming up to provide an Advanced EMT (AEMT) class for area residents. The course will begin on Monday, Oct. 4. The AEMT certification is between EMT and paramedic in the extent of medical care the certified individual can provide to patients. There are fewer hours of coursework compared to a paramedic class, and the cost is significantly less. Students must have an EMT certification prior to starting the AEMT class. This program
is offered in a blended format of remote learning and in-person learning. The in-person portion of the class will take place at Northwest EMS’ Elizabethtown station, 380 W. Bainbridge St. Additionally, students will earn clinical time by responding to 911 calls with the regular crew on an ambulance. Upon successful completion of this course, students will be eligible to sit for the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians’ Advanced EMT cognitive exam and the Pennsylvania Department of Health
psychomotor examinations. A discount on tuition is available for veterans with ID or a DD214, as well as for firefighters with a letter from their chief; a promotional code is needed to obtain these discounts. For additional information and the promotional code, contact Ryan Runkle, captain and education coordinator with Northwest EMS, at 717-361-8220. To register, visit https://edge.etown.edu/browse /emergency-medical -services/courses/advanced -emergency-medical-technician.

The program for the 2021 hybrid Tapas Shindig will include presentations by executive director Alicia Corrado, director of development Janelle Esbenshade, a member of the North Star Initiative board, and radio personality Lisa Landis will serve as master of ceremonies. Esbenshade noted, however, that the most impactful presentation of the evening will be made by a human trafficking survivor. “We share out of our experience (with victims),” reflected Esbenshade, “but when you hear it firsthand (from a survivor), it’s a different experience.” North Star Initiative has been fighting human trafficking in Lancaster for more than 10 years. More than three years ago, the organization began operating The Harbor, known as Lancaster County’s first restoration home for survivors of sex trafficking and sexual exploitation. This year’s fundraiser for North Star Initiative will be held at Warehouse 100, 100 W. Franklin St., New Holland, on Friday, Oct. 22, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. North Star did not hold the annual fundraiser in 2020 due
to COVID-19 restrictions, but this year a larger venue will allow for more attendees to stand at high-top tables enjoying tapas and mocktails if they so choose. Limited seating will also be available. A hybrid option will provide those who choose to attend virtually with a link and a delivery of tapas and mocktails to hold a watch party in their own home. Both a silent auction and a live auction will be part of the event. The live auction will feature auctioneer Tim Keller. The silent auction will open online on Friday, Oct. 8. The online silent auction is open to the public, and those wishing to bid may do so by connecting to a link at https://northstarinitiative.org or by searching for “North Star Initiative” on Facebook. Among the many items that will be auctioned off are a vacation on Anna Maria Island, Fla.; a shooting range pass; a 24-hour rental of a 2021 Corvette; and a wine tour at Waltz Vineyards. Esbenshade said that the organization hopes to raise $150,000 from this year’s event and that the funds are necessary to help battle the expanding problem of human trafficking. “Through COVID,
