When children attend a Bible2School program, they receive much more than an introduction to the Bible. They find a caring and supportive environment for personal growth, said Marie Good, area coordinator for Manheim Central Bible2School.
“My heart as a Bible2School leader is that each child hears the message that they are valued, loved and seen by God,” she said.
Bible2School will kick off its year during the week of Monday, Sept. 22. Classes will be held for second-graders at Doe Run Elementary School on Mondays, third-graders at Doe Run and second-graders at Baron Elementary School on Tuesdays, Doe Run fourth-graders and Baron third-graders on Wednesdays and Baron fourth-graders on Thursdays. All classes are held over the students’ lunch period and take

Matt Dorgan took heartbreak and turned it into hope and healing. On Dec. 3, 2020, his 15-yearold daughter, Brianna, died by suicide after a long struggle with mental health.
“Her passing shook us to our core,” he said, noting that close friends rallied around him but he knew he could not just simply
move on. “As we shared our grief, we realized a painful truth: Every one of us had lost someone we loved to mental illness. And now, we had lost Brianna. We knew something had to change. We had to do something.”
In those first raw moments of heartbreak, the idea for a mental health festival was born, he recalled.

COBYS Family Services’ Bike and Hike fundraiser is a great many things to a great many people.
“Bike and Hike is really a broad event,” said Anne Stokes, who’s been COBYS Family Services director of development and communications for six years. “It’s not just one thing. There are several different ways for people to participate. However it makes sense for them. But what it’s really all about is spending time together and celebrating all the services COBYS provides.”
COBYS Family Services will present the 29th edition of its annual Bike and Hike event in Lititz from noon to 3 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 7. The event will consist of a 10-mile and a 25-mile bike ride, a 3-mile walk, a 1.5-mile Tasty Tour and a festivities-concluding ice cream social - because everyone always has room for ice cream.
“The best thing about the Bike and Hike is the way you get to have fun and at the same time do good things for your community,” said Stokes. “You get to come as you are. What’s really special is that everyone comes together after the event and learns how COBYS is making a difference in the community.”
All the festivities included with Bike and Hike will originate from
place at Manheim BIC Church, 54 N. Penryn Road.
“Bible2School is a Bible program that meets one hour a week during the school year,” Good explained. “The children are bussed to the host site where they will listen to the Bible story while they eat lunch. Also included in the program are crafts, games, singing, laughter and prayer times.”
the Good News with their young charges. Classes reach children attending public school who may not otherwise have access to church.
“Bible2School provides a safe place for children to ask questions about God and the Bible,” Good said. “It is a place they can connect on a deeper level with friends and find support from their caring small group leaders.”
Bible2School has been sharing the Gospel for more than 45 years. It began in 1979, when a group of pastors known as the Manheim Ministerium held the first classes for more than 100 fifth-graders from all seven Manheim Central School District elementary schools. Today, the nonprofit provides weekly Bible classes for elementary students throughout the country. It has also expanded its services to include Bible2School Memberships, a franchise model designed to bring a Bible2School program to public schools nationwide.
Bible2School classes are taught by volunteers who truly believe in sharing
She noted that the program has received consistent positive feedback over the years, both from participants and their parents.
“Bible2School parents have thanked us for offering this program,” she remarked. “The children love attending, and some have said that Bible2School is their favorite part of the week.”
Like all nonprofits, Bible2School relies on community support, including volunteers who want to share their faith with others.
“We are always looking for volunteers!” Good said.

Reist Popcorn Company celebrates its 100th birthday this year, and the Mount Joy business wants you to come to the party. “100 Y’ears of Popcorn,” a community celebration, will be held on Saturday, Sept. 13, from 4 to 9 p.m. at the Reist Farm, 681 Longenecker Road, Mount Joy. It will feature fun for people of all ages, said Cindy Moyer, Reist vice president.
“(We’ll have) live music by ColeBrook Road and Even Better Than The Reality, a corn maze, hay rides, bounce houses, mini golf, a tethered hot air balloon (tickets are limited and weather permitting), free snacks, food trucks ... a popcorn museum and
fireworks,” Moyer shared. “Our community day has attractions for adults, children and families, and it’s free!”
Plans have been in the works for the celebration for more than a year as the business approached its centennial.
“In January 2024, we formed a 100 Year Celebration Committee to determine how Reist Popcorn could celebrate this huge milestone,” Moyer recalled. “Many ideas were suggested, but this event quickly came to the forefront as a way for Reist Popcorn to give back to the community that surrounds us.”
Celebrating its 100th anniversary, Reist Popcorn Company continues to thrive as a fourth-gen -
eration family business rooted in Lancaster County. Founded in 1925 by Alvin Reist, the company has grown from a small farm operation into a state-of-the-art Mount Joy facility, known for quality and innovation. Today, under the leadership of Mike Higgins, with guidance from his
father-in-law, Dave Reist, Reist Popcorn remains dedicated to premium popcorn while expanding through Reist Transloading, positioning the company as a key gateway to the East Coast. Throughout its history, the company has emphasized the

to raise awareness and build a real support network for those in crisis,” Dorgan shared. “Then came the words that changed everything: ‘We need to build the bridge.’ And just as quickly, someone shouted back, ‘For Brianna!’”
Just weeks after Brianna’s death, on Dec. 27, 2020, Building Bridges for Brianna began.
“Since that day, we’ve been committed to knocking down barriers to mental health care,” Dorgan explained. “When we see a wall in services, we don’t walk away. We find a way over it, around it, under it or straight through it.”
Describing his daughter, Dorgan noted that he could talk forever.
“Brianna was an incredible soulkind, compassionate and full of love for people and animals alike,” he remarked.
Born in Key West, Fla., Brianna soon demonstrated a desire to help others, Dorgan said, sharing stories of Brianna’s giving spirit.
A passionate animal lover, Brianna constantly lobbied to turn her home into a zoo, her father joked, noting that she wanted a monkey or a pig as a pet but happily settled for a pet dog, Emma, who she brought home just one week before her death.
An eighth-grader at Dallastown Area School District when she died, Brianna had a close-knit group of
friends.
While cleaning her room after she passed, Dorgan found a simple white T-shirt with a powerful message: “Keep Fight;ing! I Believe in You You are a Star.” The semicolon and phrasing were exactly how Brianna wrote it, he said.
“That message - raw, honest and filled with hope - has become the motto of Building Bridges for Brianna,” Dorgan commented. “It speaks not just to who Brianna was, but to the mission she unknowingly helped create: to remind people that they are not alone and they are worthy of love, support and healing.”
Building Bridges for Brianna, which serves all of Pennsylvania, held its first mental health festival in June of 2021. More than 1,500 people attended. Dorgan remembers open conversations about mental health and organizations completing realtime intakes and scheduling therapy sessions on the spot.
“That night, I spent nearly two hours answering emails, messages and phone calls from people thanking us for creating a space like that,” he said. “That was the moment we knew this couldn’t be just one event. It had to become a movement.”
The organization soon became a 501(c)(3) nonprofit and began paying for co-pays; providing coping tools; offering Question, Persuade,
Refer prevention training; and speaking publicly about mental health.
Still, Dorgan always believed he could do more.
In its third year, the organization received a donation that helped to open the first office, hire licensed social workers and therapists and offer free or reduced-cost mental health care. Within six months, the organization had outgrown the space.
Moving into a much larger office, the organization continued to grow.
“Since opening the new center, we’ve helped more than 400 people in our community get the mental health support they need,” Dorgan said of the headquarters located in Dallastown.
Dorgan, who works full time as a probation officer for the County of York in addition to running the nonprofit, emphasized the organization works hard to provide care quickly, eliminating the red tape that can cause months-long delays via traditional routes to help.
Community support is needed in a variety of ways, from donating funds to volunteering, attending events or simply being there for someone who’s struggling.
The organization’s signature event, the Bridge Building Festival, is held every September in honor of Suicide Prevention Month. This year’s festival
will take place on Saturday, Sept. 20, at Dallastown Community Park, 50 S. School Place.
“What started in 2021 with 35 vendors and 1,500 attendees has grown into a vibrant, community-powered event with over 100 vendors and more than 5,000 attendees,” Dorgan said. “The festival includes music, food trucks, local vendors, mental health organizations and a powerful sense of shared purpose.”
Also every September, the organization leads a Purple Light Campaign to raise awareness of suicide prevention, encouraging people to change their outdoor lights to purple ones to reflect one of the movement’s official colors.
Although the festival is the organization’s biggest event, Dorgan emphasized that the nonprofit works year-round to promote positive mental health.
“Mental health isn’t a one-time conversation. It’s an everyday commitment. And we’re here, year-round, building the bridge between pain and healing, isolation and community, hopelessness and hope,” Dorgan said. “Brianna’s legacy is the bridge we’re building: one that connects people to the help, hope and healing they deserve.”

importance of historic preservation in Lancaster County.
The schedule for the event includes check-in and a breakfast reception from 8:30 to 9 a.m.; welcome and presentations from 9 a.m. to noon; a catered lunch at the historic Sehner-Ellicott-von Hess House from noon to 1 p.m.; and continued presentations at the Ware Center from 1 to 5 p.m. The keynote speaker will be David W. Lititz Church of the Brethren, 300 W. Orange St., Lititz. The event will begin at noon with the 25-mile bicycle ride registration and start, followed by the check-in and start of the Tasty Tour of four downtown confectionary stopsDosie Dough, Café Arabella, CAVOLO! and Slate Café - at 1 p.m.
Registration and the start of the 10-mile bicycle ride and the 3-mile walk will also begin at 1 p.m. Then, at 2:45 p.m. the Incredible Ice Cream Celebration will begin on the grass behind Lititz Church of the Brethren.
“The Bike and Hike is a very relaxed event,” said Stokes. “The COBYS staff warmly greets you and checks you in. The Incredible Ice Cream Celebration is a time for all the participants to come together. We use that time to talk about all the great things going on at COBYS.”
More than 300 individuals, family members and community members are expected to attend.
“It’s really everybody, just like our community,” said Stokes of the participants. “It’s people of all ages, because that’s what it takes to support the committed human care that we provide. It’s people who have supported us for a long time. It’s some of our foster families. It’s a lot of donors and supporters. It might be people who have heard about us from a neighbor or a friend.”
Organizers of the Bike and Hike fundraiser are hoping to realize
$100,000 in proceeds for COBYS Family Services. Since its inception, the event has raised more than $2.5 million for the organization, which provides foster, adoption and counseling services in Lancaster, York, Lebanon, Dauphin, Cumberland and Schuylkill Counties.
“The money will go toward our overall operating expenses,” said Stokes. “The ultimate goal is to make sure COBYS has continued resources to support our work throughout the year. Without these financial resources, the COBYS organization wouldn’t be able to provide the services it does day in and day out. Throughout the year, things pop up. When we need funds for things like fostering and counsel-

COBYS, which operates offices at 444 Murry Hill Circle, Lancaster, and at 134 E. King St., Lancaster, was founded in 1996 and employs more than 90 staff members across all of its programs. COBYS Family Services conducts or benefits from five other annual fundraisers and also receives financial support through fees for services, a variety of grants, private donations and state and county resources.
“Our mission is to educate and empower children and adults to reach their full potential,” said Stokes. “We care about our clients in their times of need. We can’t always fix all the problems, but we know we can treat people with dignity, compassion and hope. There are critical needs in our community, and COBYS Family Services is an agency to meet those needs. If you value those things, we hope you’ll join us at Bike and Hike to make that care happen.”

importance of community involvement, taking an active role in local events. Reist Popcorn has participated in events such as Winterfest, and the company believes in giving back. At the community day event, 10% of proceeds from the food truck and vendor sales will be donated to the National Breast Cancer Foundation.
Moyer noted that the community event is a drop-in activity, but if people want to take a tethered hot air balloon ride, they should arrive early to receive a ticket for their assigned time, as availability is limited.
Numerous food trucks will be on-site for the party, including Halo’s Eatery, Ezzy Eats, Tipsy Boar BBQ and The Taco RV.
“Bring a lawn chair to enjoy the music and food,” Moyer said. A full list of activities, food trucks and vendors, along with an event map, may be found at www .reistpopcorn.com. The event will be held rain or shine. Registration is requested but not required.
The Lancaster County Community Foundation (LCCF) has announced that $317,200 in grants has been awarded to support the work of 18 different community initiatives. These grants, ranging from $5,000 to $55,000, will fund a variety of projects, including providing health care access to homebound geriatric neighbors, connecting local gardeners to rural food pantries, improving early childhood education programs, and sparking historical preservation.
