ne of the things Marilyn Hobday enjoys most about the Heart of L ancaster Arts and Craft Show is the opportunity it provides for education. The retired Hempfield School District ar t teacher created the show 38 years ago, with a goal of offering visitors a wide range of art options while encouraging participating vendors to demonstrate their art or share their process with shoppers. Gene Health Project Supports Future of Health Care BY JEFF FALK

WellSpan Health is looking for a bunch of good folks - conscientious people, proactive people, big-picture people. The health care system is encouraging individuals to participate in a transformative study called “The Gene Health Project.” It’s a project that can change the direction of participants’ health, as well as help others. “The opportunity to do prevention is tremendous,” said Dr. David Kann, medical director of genetics and precision medicine for WellSpan Health. “We can prevent certain diseases. Most people who participate really want to advance research, more than help themselves. Obviously, preventing a heart attack is better than treating one.” The Gene Health Project is an immense undertaking that involves multiple health care systems from all over the nation. The study collects samples of individuals’ genetics, stores the data and examines it. From those examinations, the study can predict an individual’s likelihood for certain illnesses and diseases. In six to eight weeks, participants are notified of the results of their studied samples. But the project needs samples to study. Interested individuals over the age of 18 can request blood draws or saliva kits through their Wellspan Health internet portals or by visiting the health care system’s website at www.wellspan.org. Members of the Civil Air Patrol (C AP) Jesse Jones Composite Squadron in Lancaster attended Hawk Mountain Ranger School, one of CAP’s longest-running and most challenging national cadet training programs, ending on July 19. This year is the 70th anniversary of Hawk Mountain, located in Kempton. During the weeklong training program, cadets rappelled, practiced land navigation, and learned wilderness sur vival and search and rescue operations. They learned aircraft search techniques used in downed aircraft missions, including clue detection, evidence search, and terrain-based search patterns. T here was also a visit from a medical helicopter crew, which landed at the training site and showed the

Hawk Mountain’s program seeks to teach leadership and field readiness and to help participants build confidence. It also supports CAP’s emergency services mission. CAP rangers trained at Hawk Mountain are expected to use

their new skills to improve their squadron’s emergency ser vices program and lead fellow members in advanced search and rescue operations. The Jesse Jones Composite Squadron has also announced the promotions and awards ear ned by cadets and senior members at the group’s July 27 meeting. Four cadets were recognized for attending Cadet Training School at Fort Indiantown Gap. Cadet Airman 1st Class Kaiden Painter of Leola and Cadet Senior Airmen Luca Hermosillo and Noah Hermosillo, both of Wrightsville, all received their Encampment Ribbon. Cadet Staff Sgt. A new grant funded by the Pennsylvania Beef Producers Working Group (PA BPWG) and administered through the Center for Beef Excellence (CBE) can help producers defray the cost of testing their cattle herd for theileria. To h e l p a d d re s s t h e growing risk to Pennsylvania cattle from the Asian longhorned tick and the theileria disease that can infect cattle, the grant a l low s re i m b u rs e me nt funding for beef producers in Pennsylvania who choose to test their herds for Theileria orientalis

and anaplasma. Theileria, spread through the Asian longhorned tick, can cause severe anemia in cattle, which leads to weakness, jaundice, and pale gums. Anaplasma symptoms are similar to theileria, so officials suggest a combined test. Reimbursement grants of up to $250 will be awarded on a first-come, first-ser ved basis until funds are depleted. Expansion Gives Heart Artists More Space to Create BY JEFF FALK

Pennsylvania and northern Maryland, including locations in Ephrata, Lebanon, Mount Gretna and York. “It’s a very large research project, and we will be collecting an enormous amount of data,” said Dr. Kann. “We’re also working with 15 to 20 hospital systems across the country. Soon we will have the largest data bank in the world. People who participate can learn some of the characteristics about themselves. The benefit to volunteers is that they learn about these problems and then they’re in position to prevent serious problems. “If volunteers have a family history of any problems, we can tell them their risks for those problems,” added Dr. Kann. “We store all of this data digitally. If a question ever comes up in the future, we just have to ask the computer for the details.” The Gene Health Project was initiated three years ago, and to this point the study has collected more than 6,000 genetic samples from volunteers. The goal for the project is to collect another 4,000 samples, but the research won’t stop there. “After that, the hope is to

continue the project,” said Dr. Kann. “We’ve already probably saved 1,000 lives and made 1,000 diagnoses. It’s the most remarkable way to do precision medicine. “Each of us has 23,000 genes,” continued Dr. Kann. “These genes are responsible for making proteins, and these proteins make us who we are. They determine things like the color of our eyes or the color of our hair. Basically, they make us who we are and allow us to be able to survive in most environments.” Spreading the word is one of the biggest challenges currently being faced by the Gene Health Project. Like any research, the bigger the sample size, the more accurate the findings. “The more you spread it, the more you’re able to help people,” said Dr. Kann. “I would encourage people to sign up for the Gene Health Project and see what you can learn about yourself. It’s just a win, win, win. “Up until now, health care systems have been mostly reactive,” concluded Dr. Kann. “Now we’re putting a lot of effort into who’s going to get sick and how they’re going to get sick.”

Ever ything else is merely details. “Art is such a beautiful medium, and it is especially meaningful within the ID/A (Intellectual Disability/Autism) community as a way to communicate without the need for words,” said Trisha Goldsborough, Friendship Community’s marketing coordinator. “It can be incredibly challenging for a person with ID/A to express emotions, particularly for individuals who are nonverbal. T hrough art, you can often see a person’s true self, parts of them that do not need words to be understood. Beyond creative expression, art also helps support fine motor skills, coordination and overall movement. It can even provide a calming and grounding outlet, helping to reduce aggressive behaviors and support emotional regulation.” Recently, the Friendship Community’s Heart Galler y and Market increased its capabilities to serve heart artists by acquiring physical space at its downtown location at 118 N. Water St., Suite 102, Lancaster. The local nonprofit also operates a Heart Gallery and Market

at 1149 E. Oregon Road, Lititz. Both locations are open to the public from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesdays through Fridays and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays. “Artists are able to create and grow their skills in the Heart studios and then sell their work at the Heart Gallery and Market,” said Goldsborough. “The gallery component features artwork created exclusively by Heart artists in the program. Every art purchase directly supports the artists, as they receive a commission form each sale of their work. The market side features goods from small businesses across the nation, including spices, sauce, skincare products, dog treats and chocolates. Each

of these products support businesses that are empowering individuals with ID/A, whether through providing employment opportunities or through entrepreneurs who are business owners themselves.” T he newly expanded downtown Heart Gallery and Market allows more space for more artists to create, to showcase their work, to elevate talent and to host more community events. It’s also enabled the organization to introduce products from entrepreneurs across the country. In addition, the Friendship Community has expanded its online retail space at www.friendship art.net. “Our goal is also to create a space where people of all

Historic Rock Ford Plans Programs Historic Rock Ford, 881 Rockford Road, Lancaster, has announced three upcoming events. All of her literary output, from her letters to her novels, expresses music’s role in her life. The upcoming performance will feature selections from the Austen Family Music Books - the music that Austen played and loved. It will also

The Jane Austen Playlist, founded in 2019, is a historical music project featuring the music of the Austen family in digitized n o t at i o n s , co m p a n i o n recordings, and dramatically nar rated per formances. It was created and is directed by Laura Klein and presented by a cast of Lancaster-based performers. The performance will be held on the piazza of the Hand Mansion, with seating on the lawn. Gretna Music has announced the final concerts of its 2026 summer season, taking place at the Mount Gretna Playhouse, 200 Pennsylvania Ave., Mount Gretna. In addition to mainsta ge per formances and special events, the schedule includes 20-minute First Listen concerts featuring local high school and college-age students. First Listen performances are free of charge and occur before mainstage performances. Unless otherwise noted, all other events have a fee, and tickets may be purchased at www.gretna music.org. a decade. “What he does is spectacular.” Along with woodturning, the show will feature photographers, watercolor and oil paintings, metalwork, wreaths, home décor, soaps, handmade cards and more. “We really have something for every budget and every interest,” Hobday said. “We even have someone who makes brooms.” Many vendors will demonstrate their work, and all artisans are available to answer questions and interact with the crowd. “The show is meant to be educational to see how people make their wares as much as it’s meant to showcase amazing art,” Hobday explained. “I think that aspect really sets us apart.” When she organized the first show almost 40 years ago, Hobday gathered 83 vendors. The show has grown every year. “We are ranked in the top 200 best shows in the coun-

try,” she remarked. “People know our reputation.” The show is juried by a team of five people, all of whom are artisans who participate in the show. “They are working artists, and they have a wealth of knowledge they bring to the jury,” Hobday said, noting that her own watercolors will be for sale at the show. “We try to make the show very diverse when we choose our vendors.” She also enjoys mentoring younger artists and encouraging them to participate in shows such as this one, where their art will be seen by hundreds of shoppers. Hobday organizes two art shows a year - one in the spring and one over Labor Day weekend. Each show has a charity it supports. “This year, our charitable organization is Columbia Cat Action Team, CCAT,” she said. “They’ll have a table of merchandise for sale, and people can donate
