Kathy Heil thoroughly enjoys gardening; she likes spending time alone with her perennials that thrive in the garden outside of her home. But Heil also enjoys sharing her gardening passion with others. A resident of Manheim Township, Heil is the president of the Women’s Garden Club of Lancaster County. “It’s therapy and enjoyment,” said Heil. “I enjoy seeing if the birds come, and the insects and all the natural habitat. We also have a patio in the backyard, and we enjoy sharing our meals outside. We also have a water feature to go with the garden.” There’s something calming and medicinal associated with humans physically connecting with an Earth that sustains them. Gardening also has a way of triggering our nurturing mechanisms. “I just like getting my hands in the dirt,” said Heil. “I’ve pretty much always been a gardener. I come from a farming family. I’ve always had an inclination to do some gardening.” Many of the same feelings Heil has about gardening she shares with the other 50 dues-paying members of the garden club. That bond possesses the power to inspire strong friendships and uplifting camaraderie. “They’re women from all kinds of backgrounds,” said Heil. “That’s what makes it very interesting. You learn about all these pursuits people have. “We share our pursuit of gardening interests,” she added. “We

Michael has more than a de c ade o f li t i gat ion experience in both the private and public sectors. He joined McNees from a Lancaster-based law firm and previously served as deputy attorney general for the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General, representing commonwealth agencies and departments in state and federal court. Earlier in his career, Michael served as an assistant public defender manager and an assistant public defender in the Lancaster County Public Defender’s Office.

Sustainable Development Goals Conference Posted Millersville University will host its sixth annual Sustainable Development Goals Conference on Tuesday, Sept. 15, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster. The event will coincide with Constitution Day and contribute to America250, the national commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. T he theme of the conference is “Making Democracy Wo r k : S t re n g t h e n i n g Institutions, Engaging Communities, Empowering Citizens.” The conference will aim to facilitate nonpartisan dialogue on how democratic institutions work in practice - from election administration and judicial independence to local journalism and civic education - in alignment with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 16, which focuses on peace, inclusion, justice, and accountable and inclusive institutions. Throughout the day, conference participants will

explore how democratic systems function at the county and state level, strategies for civic engagement and voter access, practical approaches for teaching democracy in polarized classrooms, and the role of local journalism in sustaining informed communities. The agenda will feature keynote addresses on election systems and institutional resilience; interactive sessions on election administration, judicial independence, combating misinformation, and civic engagement; panel discussions with election officials, journalists, educators, and legal experts; a panel discussion on civic education, featuring high school and university students; and networking opportunities for educators, community leaders, and civic organizations. Program to Explore Flax Processing ley will discuss flax culture and retting and will demonstrate the processes of breaking , scutching and hackling f lax fiber, along with how that fiber becomes linen thread and, finally, linen cloth and sewing thread. Mickley, a spinner and weaver with a fine arts degree in painting, became interested in historic textiles and their production more than 45 years ago while working as a costumed interpreter at a national historic site. Since 2018 she has grown and processed her own flax, along with volunteering at area historic sites demonstrating spinning, weaving, and flax dressing. She is an independent contractor at the Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum, where she

regularly interprets 18thand 19th-century textile production. Mickley helped to develop and teaches the museum’s Sheep to Fabric and Field to Fabric classes. She also collects antique spinning wheels and helped plan two Antique Spinning W heel Symposiums in Pennsylvania. Guests may register for the program on arrival. Lancaster Area Sewing Network (L A SN) will present “Processing Flax” on Monday, Aug. 24, at 7 p.m. at Lancaster Friends Quaker Meeting , 110 Tulane Terrace, Lancaster. Cloth, and the thread with which to sew it, all begin as fiber. Today ’s fabrics come from a wealth of fibers, many of which are synthetic, but before the 20th century, sewing thread and fabric were made of natural fibers and could even be homemade. LBC’s 115page Self- Study Report was submitted in January, followed by an on- site evaluation visit by commission representatives in March. MSCHE reaffirmed LBC ’s accreditation on June 25. In its repor t, the MSCHE team commended LBC for several achievements, including expanding academic programs across levels; maintaining strong mission alignment of academic programs, student support services, and admissions practices; aligning strateg ic planning and resource allocation with institutional priorities; and displaying a strong commitment to continuous improvement through openness to feedback , readiness to learn, and willingness to recognize oppor tunities for growth. Finds from pg 1 which will run from 8 to 11 a.m. at the church, 4810 Elizabethtown Road, Manheim. “Free clothing, accessories, shoes, coats, linens, housewares, games, etc., will all be available for shoppers,” said Kris Gray, who organizes the event with Barb Dunmire. “Ever yone is welcome to come shop for some ‘new-to-you’ clothes and accessories.” This is the 26th year for the event, which began after organizers shifted a church outreach to meet local needs. The church used to send clothing to a mission out of state, but it was expensive to ship the items, and organizers thought they could make a bigger impact in Manheim. Over the years, they have tweaked the event to provide the best shopping experience for guests. “ B e fo re w e o f fe re d appointments, the event on Saturday was ver y crowded with enthusiastic shoppers,” Gray said. “Now, since several hundred people shop on Friday, the Saturday event is not crowded, and it is quite easy to shop. And we will still have lots of quality men’s and ladies’ clothing available on Saturday.” God’s Clothing Closet will feature something for everyone, Dunmire said, adding, “There are always a lot of ladies’ clothing and accessories to give away, from gowns to sleepwear and suits to activewear. We even have a good selection of ladies’ and men’s 2X and larger clothing.” She noted that some items go very quickly. “If you need children’s clothing, it would be a good idea to make an appointment for Friday evening,” Dunmire said. “We often r un low on children’s clothing by the end of the event.” Clothing comes from the community and members of the congregation. “Some of the clothing and other items at the event are donated by Nearly Nu in Manheim when they change over their store for spring and fall,” Dunmire explained. A lthoug h the event focuses on clothing, shoppers can peruse a variety of additional items. “There will be new and

gently used Bibles and devotional books available,” Gray shared. “There is a plethora of household items - dishes, utensils, glassware, lamps, craft supplies, toys, etc. - available on the porch, so you may shop for those items before you enter the building to shop for clothing.” She added that the organizers are intentional in what happens to anything that doesn’t go home with shoppers. “All items left after the event are donated to Jubilee in Manheim, so nothing goes to waste,” she said. People are invited to bring donations of nonperishable food for the Manheim Central Food Pantry when they come to God’s Clothing Closet, but this is not required. Shoppers may also bring their own bags, but bags will also be provided at the door. Child care will be available both Friday evening and Saturday morning. To make an appointment for Friday evening, call 717665-3757 and leave a message with a name, a phone number, a good time to call back and whether child care is needed. “A member of our team will call you back within a day or two to make an appointment,” Dunmire said. “Only a limited number of reservations are available for Friday evening, so it is best to call early.” The church will accept donations of clothing from Sunday, Aug. 23, through Aug. 28. “Clothing can be placed in bags and left by the front door of the church,” Gray said. “It is extremely helpful if you label the bag with a clue of the contents, such as ‘boys size 10.’” No smoking and no pets are permitted inside the building. Service animals are welcome if they are properly identified. The church is handicapped-accessible and air-conditioned, and there is plenty of parking in a large parking lot. It ’s the reason I probably won’t sell houses for anybody else. Money comes and goes, and I’ve only got so much time in this life. The question is, ‘What am I doing with my time?’” L i fe C h a n g e s R e a l t y Group employs 22 realtors and expediates the sales of properties across Lancaster County. Adopting the company’s pay-itforward program is one of the stipulations for employment. W hen a Life Changes Realty Group realtor assists with the sale of a property, he or she is compelled to donate 10% of their commission to the nonprofit of their client’s choice. The charities must have local impact and not be associated with political campaigns or politics. “ We’re not a national brand; we’re based in Lancaster County,” said Cross. “We don’t accept just anybody. The pay-it-forward pro g ram is mand ator y when we come on board. Ever ybody told me how much money I was going to make in real estate. But Brittany (Garner, owner) told me about how much

money I was going to give away. We all do it together. It’s important to all of us. “I’ve got bills to o ,” a d d e d Cross. “I’m not a flashy person. I’m not necessarily doing this to make big bucks. At the end of the day, it’s really satisfying giving someone keys to their first house. I help people get into their homes, and that’s ver y satisfying.” From 1 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 13, at Penn Medicine Park , 650 N. Prince St., Lancaster, Life C hanges Realty Group will host a celebrator y community outreach/ fundraising event called Million Reasons Festival. T he fair will recognize the $1 million that Life C hanges Realty Group has donated to charities impacting Lancaster County. T he free event will include food trucks, an artisans’ market, a cornhole tournament, other games, a dunk tank, face painting and bounce houses, and the kids’ area at Penn Medicine Park will be open for play. “Buying a house is the biggest financial decision that most people make,” said Cross. “When I meet people and give them my spiel, I talk about the payit- for ward pro gram. It demonstrates the service over the sale. As a sales tactic, it works out great.

It’s like drips in a bucket, and now the bucket is overflowing.” At the request of their clients, Life Changes Realty Group has donated funds to more than 70 causes and nonprofits, including SWAN 4 Kids, animal shelters, St. John Neumann Catholic Church’s Off the Streets program, Gamers Outreach, the Alzheimer ’s Association, Building Bridges Foundation, No r t h S t a r I n i t i at i ve , Lancaster Conser vancy, Power Packs Project and education foundations. “It spans the gamut,” said Cross. “There are so many great causes that I can’t name all the ones we give to, and I hadn’t heard

For fiscal year 2026-27, the PA State Grant Program received a more than $ 5 . 9 m i l l ion i nc re a s e , bringing total available f u nd i n g to m o re t h a n $419 million. This supports PHEAA’s approved awarding for mula that increases the maximum award to $6,000, up from the $5,750 maximum award that has held steady for the past four years and was previously the highest award in the histor y of the PA State Grant Program. PHEAA has been supplementing the PA State Grant Program since 2012 and will again supplement the PA State Grant Program allocation this year with up to $15 million of the agency’s own funds. This support allows for the increased maximum

o f t h e a d m i n i s t rat i o n of commonwealth programs, including the PA State Grant Program, as well as the agency’s public awareness and outreach mission, saved taxpayers more than $34.5 million last year. Each year, PHEAA’s board reevaluates the awarding fo r m u l a b y a n a l y z i n g several factors, including tuition costs, the effect of inflation on family incomes, the number of expected applicants, and the gove r n o r ’s r e c o m m e n d e d funding for the program as par t of the budge t proposal for the commonwealth. Bus Trip to Annapolis Set

The Historic Preserva- County will hold its fall tion Trust of Lancaster bus trip on Thursday, Oct. 1. Participants will visit Annapolis., Md., to gain insight into three his toric homes. Participants will board the coach bus at L ancaster S hopping Center, 1625 Lititz Pike, L ancaster, at 8:15 a.m. and depart at 8:30 a.m. The group will begin its exploration at the William Paca House, a 1760s Georgian mansion that boasts a 2-acre garden and offers a p e e k i n to t h e i n n e r workings of an upperclass household during the Revolutionary period. The house was restored in 1965 using historical artwork and archeological excavations. After enjoying a box lunch on the Paca Garden Terrace, attendees will hear a presentation on the ongoing James Brice House restoration project. The first cornerstone was laid in 1767, and the house subsequently experienced centuries’ worth o f re p u r p o s i n g. S i n c e 2014, it has been managed by Historic Annapolis, which is transforming it into an e ducational museum. SP22457

Penn State Athletics and the Giant Company, known locally as Giant and Martin’s, have announced a new multi-year partnership, naming Giant the Official Grocery Partner of Penn State Athletics with category exclusivity. Giant will also serve as the first cornerstone partner of the newly renovated West Shore Home Field at Beaver Stadium at Penn State University. As the first cornerstone partner of the renovated venue, Giant will have a custom gate sponsorship at West Shore Home Field at Beaver Stadium, which will be enhanced for the debut of the completed renovation in the fall of 2027. The partnership includes one-of-one entitlements, premium signage, in-venue promotions, football and basketball pregame activations, and additional assets across Penn State Athletics. Giant will use student-athletes to support local store openings and its extensive community programs across the region. The partnership also names Giant as the presenting par tner of the Penn State Cub Club and Penn State Sports Camps across all 31 sports programs. Auditions Open for MU Orchestra The Millersville University (MU) Orchestra will provide an opportunity for community musicians to audition to become members of the orchestra. T he Mennonite Children’s Choir of Lancaster (MCCL) invites children and youths entering second through 12th grades to join its choral community. MCCL provides choral education for students in kindergarten through 12th grade, with both auditioned and nonauditioned options. Registration is now open for the 2026-27 year. Families can learn more and complete registration at www.mennonitechildrens choir.org/join/register/. M C C L’s p e r f o r m i n g choirs include Carol Choir for grades two to five, Concert Choir for grades six to eight, and Chamber Choir for grades nine to twelve. These ensembles rehearse Tuesday evenings from late August through early May and present seasonal concerts in December and in the spring. The middle and high school choirs also participate in an annual choral tour each June. The

choirs are directed by Rosemary Blessing and Sarah Wingard. In addition to the auditioned choirs, MCCL offers two nonauditioned p ro g ra m s d e s i g ne d to build foundational vocal skills. Prelude Music is for children in kindergarten through first grade, and Choristers is open to grades two through six. These classes meet Tuesday evenings for eight weeks in the fall and spring. MCCL serves more than 150 singers each year, representing over 40 schools, 50 congregations, and 15 denominations. Rooted in the mission of “training children and youth to glorify Jesus Christ through excellent choral singing,” MCCL is a program of Lancaster Mennonite School and welcomes all children and youths in the community. Senior Expo Slated

More than 50 exhibitors will be available to offer information on programs and ser vices for older community residents at Sen. Scott Martin’s Senior Expo on Thursday, Aug. 27. The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Farm and Home C e n t e r, 1 3 8 3 A r c a d i a Road, Lancaster. It is free of charge. Representatives of state, county, and local agencies will be on hand to provide information on benefits for older Pennsylvanians, including health and wellness, assistive technologies, consumer protection, income tax assistance, veterans’ benefits, traffic safety, and utility assistance. Free health screenings, do or pr iz es , and lig ht refreshments will also be available. The theme of this year’s Senior Expo is “America the Beautiful” in recognition of the nation’s 250th a n n i v e r s a r y. We a t h e r permitting, a flag-raising ceremony will kick off the expo, and America250PA will be available to hand out free merchandise at the event. The Lancaster District A t to r n e y ’s O f f i ce w i l l be on-site to help citiz e n s p ro p e r l y d i s p o s e of unused prescription medications. People may bring old, unused, or unneeded medications to the event and place them in the secure box at the L ancaster County Drug Task Force table staffed by a L ancaster County detective. The initiative is being offered to slow the abuse of prescription medications. As a new feature at this year’s expo, Tech Buddies - a nonprofit organization that encourages teenage volunteers to help older Pennsylvanians with cellphones and other devices - will be available to provide technology tutoring to seniors.
