he members of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Penryn and S t . Luke Lutheran Church in Schaefferstown are always looking for ways to connect with the wider community. This year, they’re inviting everyone out for a carnival.

The carnival will be held at the Penryn church at 1258 Newport Road on Saturday, Aug. 22, from 4 to 7 p.m. It will feature food, fun and fellowship.

“We wanted to do something to give back to the community,” said pastor Angie Hammer, who serves at both churches. “This is a way to thank the community for their help with various projects we do and a way to support families in our community.”

For more than 100 years, the church has held a summer picnic, but this year that wasn’t possible due to updates needed at the picnic grove. Inviting people to a carnival in The Backyard at St. Paul Lutheran Church See Carnival pg 6

Think of Manheim, and you might think of the farm show or a long tradition of successful high school football teams. But there’s more to the town, and the community of Manheim has a deep history of entrepreneurship.

To celebrate Manheim’s contributions to creativity, Manheim Area Chamber of Commerce (MACC) is launching “Manheim: Made by Hand.”

“As part of our new rebranding campaign, ‘Made by Hand,’ we are celebrating the rich tradition of craftsmanship that has defined Manheim for generations,” said Kristie Schmid, executive director of the Chamber. “From skilled trades and local makers to businesses built on care, precision and pride, this campaign is all about honoring the hands and stories behind our community.”

As Schmid explained, the campaign is an initiative of the Market Manheim team of the Chamber.

“This team works to promote dow ntow n to enhance the social and economic vibrancy of Manheim,” she said. “ T his campaign is open to any MACC member as a way to showcase their craft, products or services; share their story and connection to Manheim’s heritage; and contribute visuals, demonstrations or behind-the-scenes insights into their work.”

The campaign is designed to spotlight the wide variety of businesses that call Manheim home. Whether someone creates handmade products, restores antiques, brews beverages, prepares food or provides a specialized service, the Chamber hopes the campaign will highlight the skill and dedication that goes into every business.

Singers to Perform in New York City The Amadeus Chorale Youth Singers will open for the “Christmas Spectacular” starring the Radio City Rockettes at Radio City Music Hall in New York City on Nov. 21. Purrs from pg 1 “All regular games are a $50 cash prize, and all specials will be cash prizes with gift cards and baskets,” shared Kathy Ann Kramer, treasurer for Precious Paws Community Cats, the Manheim organization behind the event. “There will be (giveaway) prizes, 50/50, door prizes and lots of fun merchandise, including the launch of our 2027 calendar.”

Proceeds from the event will be used to fund Precious Paws’ trap-neuter-return TNR operations, which had been on pause during the construction of a cat barn.

Now that the barn is complete, the organization has begun its community work again.

The Oct. 10 festivities will also include a ribbon cutting for the new barn, which is located off-site.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony will include a toast and a short video that captures the organization’s two-year journey to make the barn a reality.

“We are passionate about the welfare of the cats in our community and are continuously striving to provide them with better lives,” Kramer said. “Our community of support is extremely valued, and each event is prepared with two things in mind: to raise money for our beloved cats and to give back to our awesome community.”

Precious Paws began in 2021, when Manheim resident Samantha MacIntyre noticed an abundance of stray and feral cats in the community. Her efforts to rescue and sterilize the cats started small but quickly grew as the need became more apparent. In 2023, Precious Paws Community Cats became a formal nonprofit, expanding its impact, recruiting more volunteers and providing

access to more resources to better serve its mission.

For the past two years, the organization has focused on construction of a cat barn that will serve as a dedicated space for recovering, rehabilitating and socializing cats that need time and support before being returned to their colonies or, in some cases, adopted into homes.

MacIntyre emphasized that there are many ways people can support the organization, including donating funds toward surgeries, medications and supplies for field care; helping with trapping , transport or recovery support; serving as short-term fosters for cats recovering from injury; and spreading awareness by educating others about TNR and the importance of sterilizing community cats.

She added that when people donate to Precious Paws or participate in an event such as the bingo celebration, they’re not just helping one cat; instead, the y ’re helping entire colonies of cats receive care, preventing countless litters from being born on the streets and giving previously forgotten cats a second chance at life.

Kramer, who has been assisted by Susan Berger Hein in organizing the bingo, encourages people to get a ticket for the event, which is limited to 100 people.

“Our events are always a good time,” she said, “and it’s nice to meet fellow cat people while enjoying some games, laughs and delicious food.”

It’s a Beautiful Day in the Neuro Neighborhood

There’s a great new nonprofit in Lancaster County that’s been founded by Neffsville resident Greta Myers. It’s called “Neuro Neighborhood.” “ We u s e d ‘ ne i g hb orhood ’ to g ive people a welcoming invitation to something big ger than themselves,” said Myers, who also serves as executive director of the organization. “Neighborhoods contain people who come together to support one another. We all know how important it is to have a support system, and we felt that use of the title ‘neighborhood’ would exemplify our support.

as possible,” continued Myers. “The more people who know about the Neuro Neighborhood, the more people we can support.”

Founded in March of 2025, Neuro Neighborhood is an all-volunteer organization designed to help people dealing with neurological conditions like Parkinson’s disease and multiple sclerosis.

Those neurological conditions can occur through injury or a deterioration of the central ner vous system, which includes o u r b ra i n s a n d s p i n a l cords.

For now, Myers is operating Neuro Neighborhood out of her residence.

“Spinal cord injur ies or brain injuries can be caused by traumatic events to either area of our central ner vous system, or lack of blood f low to that area,” said Myers. “Symptoms widely vary between neurological conditions including movement, sensory and cognitive changes. Cognitive changes can include difficulty with memory, sequencing or planning.

Some movement symp-

toms can include increased tone and reflexes in muscles, difficulty initiating movement and weakness affecting many muscle groups.

“Speech and breathing can be impacted as well, b e cause b o th of these actions are controlled by our muscles,” she added.

“Keep in mind that these symptoms are based in neurolog y; it is not as simple as going to the g y m t o g e t s t r o n g e r.

Recover y from these types of muscle changes must include what we call neuroplasticity to help improve these symptoms or b e c re at i ve to f i nd compensatory strategies to allow full participation in life.”

One of Neuro Neighborhood’s most effective weapons in the fight against neurological disorders is activity or group activities.

pat ient s ,” s aid Myers . “ U n fo r t u n a t e l y, I h a d trouble finding the types of resources and support that my patients were looking for, so I started writing those ideas down as a list. Then I did research and connected with other organizations around the country that were tr ying to incorporate a better continuum of care and support for adults with neurolo g ical conditions. My list continued to grow, and I found others who wanted to help me make that list a reality. Thus, we created Neuro Neighborhood.”

The Lancaster Bicycle Club will hold two rides through scenic roads in Au g u s t . T h e c l u b w i l l host its annual Ice Cream Lovers’ Ride on Saturday, Aug. 15, and the Covered Bridge Classic on Sunday, Aug. 16.

The Ice Cream Lovers’ Ride - voted Best Ride in the State of Pennsylvania - will offer two scenic route options designed for riders who enjoy quiet backroads, rolling farmland, and local ice cream favorites. Riders participating in a 40-mile route will depar t from C a l va r y C h u rc h , 1 0 5 1 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster, at 8:15 a.m., with stops at B ird-in-Hand Bakery, Lapp Valley Farm, and Oregon Dairy. Those taking part in a 28-mile route will depart from the church at 8:30 a.m., visiting Bird-in-Hand Bakery,

Hayloft Ice Cream, and Oregon Dairy.

Riders can expect peaceful roads, farmland views, and the chance to enjoy some of Lancaster County ’s most beloved ice cream destinations.

Weather permitting, the ride offers a relaxed, family-friendly morning filled with scener y and local flavor.

The Covered Bridge Classic will feature multiple mileage options departing from different locations, allowing riders to choose the challenge that fits their goals while experiencing Lancaster’s iconic covered bridges and countryside.

This year, the Covered Bridge Classic is expecting approximately 1,500 cyclists, underscoring its reputation as one of Pennsylvania’s most recognized and well-attended cycling events.

Proceeds from the Covered Bridge Classic directly support the Lancaster Bicycle Club’s Community Grants Program, which funds projects that make Lancaster County safer and more enjoyable for cyclists of all ages.

According to the club’s published grant history, it has contributed more than $615,000 to local initiatives, including bike infrastructure improvements such as racks, repair stations , and sig na ge; safety education programs for youths and adults; support for local parks and trails that enhance outdoor recreation; and partnerships with schools and nonprofits promoting healthy, active lifestyles.

baseball diamond built atop the borough’s former reservoir more than a century ago, has a rich baseball history.

It once served as the home field for several Columbia semipro teams, including clubs led by player-manager Jimmy Sheckard, who grew up nearby and, at various points during his major league career, led the league in home runs, stolen bases, walks and slugging percentage. The field also welcomed Black barnstorming teams throughout the 1920s and 1930s.

T he Aug. 15 doubleheader marks the fourth straight year the Keystones have included Columbia on their schedule, and once again several borough residents will take the field.

Spectators are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and a picnic lunch, and children will be invited onto the field to play between games. Portable restrooms will be available.

CAP Squadron Relocates The Civil Air Patrol (CAP) Jesse Jones Composite Squadron has announced that it will relocate to Alliance Aviation within the terminal of the Lancaster Airport in Lititz beginning in August. The squadron’s meetings will be held on Mondays from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., which represents a change from the previous schedule.

The new location will provide a larger meeting space as well as a professional environment for cadet and senior member development. It will support all three of CAP’s chartered

missions: cadet programs, emergency services, and aerospace education.

Cadet programs include leadership development, physical fitness, and character development for youths ages 12 to 18. Emergency services include training for search and rescue, disaster relief, communications, and also mission support training for qualified members. Aerospace education includes STEM instruction, learning about aviation, and an aerospace curriculum for cadets and senior members.

CAP also provides additional opportunities, such as flight

training, encampments, and national special activities.

The relocation was made possible through the continued support and partnership of airport manager Ed Foster. The squadron remains committed to serving Lancaster County through volunteering, youth development, and mission readiness.

Jesse Jones Squadron 304 meets each Monday except holidays at 6:30 p.m. at Alliance Aviation, located inside the Lancaster Airport terminal on Airport Road in Lititz. Visitors are welcome.

For one day, Columbia’s Janson Field will transform into a living museum, bringing the sights, sounds and r ules of baseball’s earliest days back to life.

On Saturday, Aug. 15, two vintage clubs will compete in a free doubleheader of 1864-style “base ball” (the original two-word spelling), a version of the game played by more than 400 teams across the country.

The games will begin at 11 a.m. at the park, 650 Cherry St. The event is possible thanks to the support of the Columbia Lions Club as part of the borough’s yearlong tricentennial celebration, and admission is free.

The matchup will pit the Keystone Club of Harrisburg against the Mechanicsburg Zouaves. B oth teams recently competed with a total of 26 clubs in the Gettysburg National 19th Century Base Ball Festival, held July 18 and 19.

Even the names of the teams are based in history, said Rich Heinick, who was a founding member of the Keystones when the team formed more than a decade ago.

“Both clubs have borrowed their names from actual teams that played in those towns during the 1860s and 1870s,” he explained. “The Zouaves were re-formed recently, and this will be their inaugural game. There will be extra uniforms available if anyone would like to try their hand at 1864 base ball.”

More than one sports historian has described this vintage sport as “a Civil War re-enactment with real bullets.”

The game will look familiar to today’s fans, except for two notable differences: Players compete without gloves, since they were not widely used until the early 1880s, and a ball caught after one hop - known as “on the bound” - counts as an out.

“The bound rule changes the way everyone hits, runs and positions themselves on defense,” Heinick said.

“It seems a little strange at first, but you can see how this made sense in the early days of the sport. After several years of debate, the rule was amended in 1865 to make the game more challenging. Even so, our players try to catch what they can on a fly, because we often play in open fields, and you never know which way a bounce will go.”

The ball closely resembles today ’s baseball in size, weight and firmness, meaning players must rely on technique, and sometimes tolerate some pain, to field it bare-handed.

Pitchers throw underhand, batters overrun first base at their own risk, and any ball that first lands inside the first- and third-base lines is fair, even if it later rolls into foul territory.

That rule keeps the corner infielders on their toes. The games are fiercely competitive while maintaining a strong tradition of good sportsmanship.

Carnival from pg 1 So, the church members pivoted and decided to take advantage of the space behind the church, known as “The Backyard,” which features a playground, plenty of room for activities and café string lights for ambiance.

Although the event is a carnival, there will not be any rides. Instead, the event will focus on carnival-style games, including a fishbowl game, a PingPong cup game, a bean bag toss and more. A highlight of the event will be a dunk tank, where Hammer has been “ voluntold” to be ready to get wet.

“We’re very excited to have our pastor in the dunk tank,” said Amanda Hookway, event chair. “It’s going to be a lot of fun to watch.”

Bingo will also be available for people of all ages to play, and prizes will be awarded for both the carnival games and bingo.

People will have the

option of two types of wristbands for the event - one that includes the games and one for bingo.

Speaker to Share About Cross-Country Adventure T he Hershey Histor y C e n t e r, 4 0 No r t h e a s t Drive, Hershey, will host a program, “Navajo Rugs: A Connection to Mount Gretna” by Don “Stone” Kensinger, on Wednesday, Aug. 19, from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

The program chronicles a cross-country adventure that began in 2012. Upon moving into their Mount Gretna cottage, Kensinger and his wife, Vicki, were gifted a Navajo weaving passed down through generations of the cottage’s o w ne rs s i nce t h e l ate 1800s. The item sparked a quest that connected the cottage’s original owner, W. Theodore Wittman, to Mo u n t Gre t n a a n d Kensinger’s passion for the Diné people and their art.

Following the presentation, copies of Kensinger’s book - “Weaving Passions: Journey from the Dinétah

to the Little Red Cottage on Brown - Connecting the Threads of Navajo Rugs, Theo Wittman and Mount Gretna, Pennsylvania” - will be available for purchase.

“St. Luke’s has a ministry where they offer a noontime lunch on Thursday and a Sund ay evening meal, and it’s all free for the community. Penr yn has a community food pantr y. We thou g ht it would be nice to support a need in our community that goes along with this food ministry.”

Both churches have also collected back-to-school supplies to fill backpacks, and people who come to the

carnival will be able to pick up what they need while supplies last.

“If you’re looking for something really fun for your family that’s low-cost and offers a little bit of something for everyone, this is it,” Hookway said.

“It’s going to be a fun way to wrap up your summer before you launch back into the school year.”
