Come out to the Kids Cookie Break Fest

Cometo the Kids Cookie Break Fest for family fun, food and entertainment. The event will be held on Saturday, Aug. 26, at The Junction Center, 1875 Junction Road, Manheim. Two identical sessions will be held, one from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and one from 2 to 5 p.m.

“You’ll see a variety of friends you might have heard on the Kids Cookie Break,” explained Stacey Gagne, vice president of operations for WJTL FM 90.3, referencing the kid-friendly radio program. “It’s like we’re bringing all of the fun of the Kids Cookie Break to a free event for families.”

Two outdoor stages will feature performances and programs by Phredd, Steven Courtney, First Capital Drumline, Jared Erb, Cissy and The Man, Marian & Friends

Ventriloquist, Jesse Rothacker and Forgotten Friend Reptile Sanctuary, This Way Up and Ryan & Friends.

“We will also have a bounce house, covered wagon rides, Spooky Nook Gymnastics, barrel train rides, chalk art, interactive vendor tents and carnival games,” Gagne noted.

“My goal is to go to the 2030 Olympics,” said luger Kendall Achen. Now the Manheim Central High School freshman-to-be is one step closer to reaching that goal.

Kendall, the daughter of Stacy and Mike Achen of Manheim, was recently promoted to the USA Luge Jr. National Candidate Team after having spent three years on the Development Team. The Candidate Team is typically for athletes who show potential to reach the National Team but who have aged out of the Development

Team by reaching age 15. Kendall, at just 13 years old, didn’t age out of the first team, but instead, she was chosen for the new team based on her ability to train and compete successfully with older athletes.

“Kendall’s coaches each agreed that she was more than ready to move up to the Candidate Team at the end of last season, after she had started sliding from the women’s start on the track, the highest level she will ever have to slide from, which is not typical for a 13-year-old athlete,” Stacy explained.

Kendall will train and compete in

This is the 11th year for the Kids Cookie Break Fest. Each year, the event supports an organization in the community by encouraging participants to donate specific items with admission.

“This year, we are inviting everyone who attends to donate art supplies to

the School District of Lancaster,” Gagne explained. “Specifically, we are asking for art paper, paintbrushes and Sharpies.”

People will have the opportunity to purchase a Chick-fil-A box lunch to enjoy on-site, with proceeds helping to offset the cost of the event. “People are also welcome to bring their own picnic lunch if they want to,” Gagne remarked.

She noted that the fest relies on volunteers as well as sponsors to operate. Sponsors of this year’s Kids Cookie Break Fest include Sight & Sound Theatres, STRAY Production Services, Weaver’s Garage, Upward Broadband, Align Life Ministries, Casey Jones’ Restaurant at Paradise Station, Spooky Nook Sports, Chick-fil-A, The Bull Guys, Blessings of Hope and Herr’s.

When Risa Paskoff’s children were small, she almost never got to read the Sunday paper, but on one Sunday in early 1989, Risa noticed an article about Janiece Seldomridge, who was raising her autistic son, Aaron. “I said to the kids, ‘Give me a second to read this story,’” recalled Risa, who specifically remembered one line from the article that read, “(Seldomridge) and a group of parents want to start a camp program (for their children with disabilities).” “I needed to find out about that,”

Risa said. “That was my dream.”

Risa met with the group of parents several times and eventually became the director of Aaron’s Acres, an organization that bears the name of Seldomridge’s son and provides socialization and recreation for children and young adults with special needs. That first summer camp in 1989 welcomed children ages 5 to 9. Aaron’s Acres now offers both summer camp and school year programs for those ages 5 to 21.

On Saturday, Aug. 26, starting at 1 p.m., the organization will hold Aaron’s Acres’ 25th anniversary celebration at Mickey’s Black Box, See Aaron’s Acres pg 6

Lake Placid, N.Y.; in Park City, Utah; and potentially at Whistler Mountain near Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, if ice time is available. “The athletes of the Jr. National Candidate Team that are not new to the team this year will be training to compete in the Youth Olympic Games to be held in South Korea in early 2024,” Stacy noted. “However, as a first-year athlete on the Candidate Team, Kendall and others who are new to the team will not qualify to compete in those games.”

We encourage civic and fraternal groups, schools, churches, scouts, and other local organizations to submit news releases of general interest to the majority of our

coaches,” Stacy shared.

Kendall’s training also included workouts with weightlifting sessions, agility, reaction time and flat ice training, where she practiced her paddling on the ice rink in Lake Placid.

Kendall spent a good portion of the summer at training camps in Lake Placid, where her regimen shifted due to the warm weather. “During the camps, the athletes stay at the Olympic and Paralympic Training Center and do everything they do during winter training, but with the ice melted off the track for the summer, they train on wheeled sleds up at Mount Van Hoevenberg, the same location as the ice track, ‘sliding’ on a macadam path that serves as their track, while navigating courses of varying difficulty created by their

“Kendall also recently got a rowing machine, which will help her with faster starts, as the rowing motion mimics the athlete pulling off the handles at the start of their run down the track,” Stacy said. “In addition to having a rowing machine at home, Kendall does weight training as well as workouts designed by her coaches, and she uses a pull-up bar to target the specific muscle groups required to maximize power to achieve faster starts.”

Kendall said she loves the sport of luge, and she’s excited to be progressing as an athlete, all with her goal of reaching the Olympics. “It’s important to me because it’s a sport that not a lot of athletes do, and the Olympics is where the best of the best compete,” she said. “I would be proud to represent my country at the Olympics someday.”

Cub Scouts post Community Fun Night

Manheim’s Cub Scout Pack 47 will hold a Community Fun Night along with Cub Scout sign-up on Monday, Aug. 14, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Scout Hall, located between North Hazel and North Linden streets behind Baron Elementary School. Girls and boys in grades kindergarten to fifth grade, along with their parents or guardians, are welcome.

A bounce house and yard games will be set up at Scout Hall, and snacks and drinks will be available. Attendees will be able to meet some of the Scout leaders and learn more about Cub Scouts. Leaders will be available to answer questions and assist with the sign-up process.

Cub Scouts is a familyf ocused program that gives children and their parents or guardians opportunities to spend time together. Badges earned through activities provide recognition of what the boys and girls have learned

through Scouting.

Many activities are planned for the 2023-24 school year, such as participating in the Manheim Farm Show parade, a Trunk or Treat harvest party, pinewood derby races, and hikes. Pack 47 is run by a group of parent volunteers, who have spent time over the summer planning the coming year’s Scout activities.

Monthly pack meetings bring all the Scouts together for an outing or an event at Scout Hall. Dens meet twice a month to work on badges related to a variety of activities, such as fishing, cooking, camping, and building. Each requirement helps the Scouts learn life skills and provides an opportunity for parents and guardians to positively interact with their children. The celebration will be divided into two parts, with a carnival-themed family fun event happening from 1 to 4 p.m. featuring inflatables, bounce houses, games, food trucks, face painting, and popcorn. “All (area) families are invited. It’s open to everyone,” said Risa.

For the evening event, doors open at 5:30 p.m., and the celebration for guests age 18 and older will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. The Mama Tried Band will play and a mentalist from Philadelphia will stroll through the gathering interacting with guests. Food will include heavy appetizers and beverages by Cracked Pepper Catering. Risa noted that silent auctions will be held during the afternoon and evening events, along with a Fund-a-Need opportunity. “Two parents will speak, and there will be a brief presentation (in the evening),” said Risa, who added that attire will be dressy casual. Tickets, which are necessary to attend either event, may be purchased at

www.aaronsacres.org by Monday, Aug. 14.

Risa recalled identifying her first career choice at an early age. “When I was 9, I volunteered to help in the classroom for students with disabilities instead of going out to recess,” she stated. “When I was 16, I worked at a (Young Men’s Hebrew Association (YMHA)) day camp for kids with disabilities in New York.” In that position, Risa recognized the possibilities a camp atmosphere could offer. “I saw the power of focusing on therapy, communication, and socialization but in a fun setting,” she said.

After earning her master’s degree in social work, Risa worked in a hospital setting. At age 24, she contacted the camp where she had been previously employed and learned the organizaton was looking for a program director. She filled that position, but resigned later when her husband, Jack, a rabbi, began leading a synagogue in New Jersey. Not long after, she was rehired and commuted from her new home to the YMHA until her first child was born. When her family moved to Lancaster, she had her own therapy practice for children until after becoming the director for Aaron’s Acres.
