“If you are the kind of person that enjoys all types of beautiful cars, the smell and taste of barbecue chicken, good music and the exciting chance to win awesome prizes all in an outdoor setting, then you can’t afford to miss this event,” said Skip Shimko, president of the Manheim Sertoma Club, describing the club’s upcoming car show. “You will be able to easily drive in to register your car, truck or motorcycle; bring a chair to sit with family and friends; or stroll through the rows of beautiful vintage classic cars, street rods, customs and rarities while listening to music that will take you down memory lane.”
The Manheim Sertoma Club’s
third annual car show will be held on Saturday, Sept. 13, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Elstonville Sportsmen’s Association, 3133 Pinch Road, Manheim.

through Friday, Aug. 22. On-site registration will begin at 8 a.m.
“While perusing the cars, you will probably work up an appetite that you can satisfy with a barbecue chicken dinner, burgers, hotdogs and fries, after which you can
top it off with a dish of Kreider’s ice cream for dessert, all available at the event,” Shimko said. Barbecue meals will be served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and are available by preorder through Aug. 22. All types of cars will be featured at the show, including classics, street rods, muscle cars, trucks and motorcycles. The American Quilter’s Society (AQS) QuiltWeek show is not your grandmother’s quilt display. It’s a full-on celebration of creativity, color and craftsmanship that will leave even non-quilters in awe.
“People will be blown away by what they see,” shared Michelle Renee Hiatt, director of AQS. “People who don’t quilt may have an image in their mind of what a quilt looks like, but they will be surprised by what these quilts look like. Even if you are not a quilter, if you have a love of art and fiber, it’s worth coming to the show to see the talent that’s out there.”
The QuiltWeek show will be held from Wednesday, Sept. 10, through Saturday, Sept. 13, at Spooky Nook Sports, 75 Champ Blvd., Manheim. It will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesday through Friday, Sept. 12, and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday.
The show will feature workshops, lectures, special events and more.
“There will be classes in color, technique, appliqué, fabric painting,” Hiatt said. “We also offer classes to learn how to quilt on domestic, sit-down longarm and longarm machines. Those are classes you don’t often see.”
Many of the instructors offer kits for sale, and the machines necessary to work on the projects will be on-site, she said.
“This is also an excellent opportunity to learn,” she noted. “If you are thinking about purchasing a sewing machine, this gives you the perfect opportunity
Lloyd Melhorn will retire on Friday, Aug. 8, from Longenecker’s Hardware in Manheim after 50 years of employment.
In 1975, Melhorn’s fatherin-law worked in the appliance department at Longenecker’s and informed him of an opening there. Melhorn, then 33 years old, wrote a letter to the company president, Fred Longenecker. They met in person, and Fred hired him on the spot. When Fred retired 24 years later in 1999, he cleaned out his desk and returned that
letter to Melhorn, who still has it.
Melhorn attended Messiah College and was a former pastor of Brethren in Christ Church before being hired by Longenecker’s in the appliance department. He delivered and installed appliances and did plumbing and electrical work. He later worked in the screen and glass departments. He currently processes inventory from the True Value warehouses as it is received in the store.
During his long tenure
with the store, Melhorn has witnessed the store’s expansions. Many of the store’s departments have also evolved in past decades, such as the greenhouse, rental department, gifts and toys and expanded power tool department.
Melhorn and his wife, Lois, raised a daughter and two sons in Manheim and have two grandchildren, who all live locally. The Melhorns have enjoyed traveling many times to the Caribbean, to Africa and to missions in Nicaragua and Honduras. They have sold their home of 50 years and have downsized. Melhorn works in his church’s food pantry and may look for more volunteer opportunities after he retires.
The YMCA of the Roses has announced the appointment of Michael A. Smith as its new president and CEO, effective Friday, Aug. 1. Smith will succeed Larry Richardson, who is retiring after 31 years of leadership. Smith has served the YMCA of the Roses in a variety of leadership roles over the past eight years, most recently as vice president of administration, where
he oversaw fundraising, human resources, marketing, and IT. Prior to this role, Smith served as director of operations in Lancaster and as branch executive director in Shrewsbury. Smith previously worked as executive director of Big Brothers Big Sisters of York & Adams Counties and held fundraising positions within the United Way system.
volunteer and youth sports coach, and he has served on several local nonprofit boards. Grounded in his Christian faith, Smith views his work with the YMCA as a calling to serve others and strengthen the community.
Born and raised in York, Smith earned both his bachelor’s degree and MBA from York College of Pennsylvania. He is married to his wife, Alesha, and together they are raising three children. He is an active community
Smith brings a steady, mission-focused leadership style, with a strong emphasis on team-building, operational effectiveness, and long-term sustainability.
The Lancaster Chapter Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) will hold its annual picnic on Saturday, Aug. 23, at Waltz Vineyards, 1599 Old Lime Road, Manheim. A social hour will begin at 11 a.m., and the meal from Hess’s Barbecue will be served at noon.
The menu will include applewood smoked pulled pork barbecue, hickory smoked beef brisket, baked beans, macaroni and cheese, potato salad, tossed salad, and dessert. A selection of Waltz wine as well as other beverages will also be included.
Reservations and payment are required by Monday, Aug. 18, by contacting Dennis Benchoff at 717-560-1260 or dlbenchoff2@comcast.net.

local artists from Stiegel Glassworks, Shop 51 and Whitetail Woodcrafters.
Along with cars and food, the show will also feature music, giveaway and silent auction items and a local fire truck for people to explore.
Proceeds from the car show will benefit Hope Served, Manheim Community Life Group (Home on Ferdinand) and Mt. Hope Nazarene Retirement Community.
“Each of these organizations work every day to provide assistance to people with specific needs in our communities,” shared Wendy Wood, Sertoma member and car show organizer. “Their outreach spreads across Lancaster and all surrounding counties within Pennsylvania.”
Hope Served works with adults living with disabilities to provide a higher quality of life. Manheim Community Life Group supports women with children through a sixto-12-month transitional housing and individualized case management program. Mt. Hope Nazarene is a five-star skilled health care facility which provides much-needed services to aging members of the community.
Members of the Sertoma Club expressed thanks for the support from individuals and businesses in the community that donated to the event and to the three organizations that work to help people in need.
“We are excited to provide a community day
for people enjoy, come together to relax, check out really awesome rides and at the same time, bring awareness to some really great nonprofit organizations who support our local families,” Wood commented.
Hosting the show to benefit local organizations aligns perfectly with the Sertoma Club’s mission, said Shimko.
“Manheim Sertoma has been serving the community in Manheim and its citizens since 1958 by fundraising through various events such as this car show,” he remarked. “Our nonprofit club is comprised of volunteers that continually seek to provide a better way of life for others through various programs and service to the community.”
Lancaster-based U.S. Boiler Company has introduced a rebate program to help victims of flood damage throughout Lancaster County.
The recent severe weather events experienced in the Lancaster area damaged many heating systems. From now through Tuesday, Sept. 30, U.S. Boiler Company is offering a special tiered rebate program for residents whose boilers were damaged by floods.
Homeowners who purchase a new cast-iron gas-fired boiler are eligible for a $300 rebate. Those who purchase a cast-iron oil-fired boiler are eligible for a $400 rebate, and residential condensing boiler installations can receive a $500 rebate.
All rebates will be paid directly to homeowners at the address of installation.
Boilers must be installed by a licensed professional installer and registered in Lancaster County. Proof of purchase, installation and photos of the flood-damaged boiler are required for redemption. Installing contractors must purchase replacement boilers from a participating wholesale distributor. No online retailers are permitted.
This offer is valid for boilers installed and registered between July 15 and Sept. 30. This offer cannot be combined with any other offer or promotion. Participants should allow four to six weeks for processing of rebate request. This is a limited time offer. U.S. Boiler Company reserves the right to modify or end this rebate program at any time.

Thayne Gouse, Manheim Sertoma chairman of the board, encouraged people to come to the event, noting, “This car show is an opportunity to serve our local community. Through participants who come out to support this event, we can assist the three local beneficiaries as well as others throughout the year.”
Chicken barbecue tickets may be purchased from any member of the Manheim Sertoma Club or by calling Wood at 717-824-2658. For more information on the club, follow the Manheim Sertoma Club Facebook page.

to try all these machines and see what’s right for you. There are all levels of classes. There’s something there for each person.”
Instructors will include nationally known quilters Sue Cleveland and Nancy Mahoney, along with a variety of unique exhibits.
National instructors will offer classes, and hundreds of quilts will be on display throughout the show, including just under 400 contest quilts in eight categories as well as almost 300 special exhibit quilts.
“The variety and quality of these quilts is incredible,” Hiatt said. “It’s really inspiring to see all the different types - modern, handquilted, machine-quilted, applique, piecing. No matter what type of quilter someone perceives themselves to be, they will find quilts similar to their tastes as well as quilts that will push them to start thinking outside the box.”
“Pay attention to the quilt exhibit by the Two of Us,” Hiatt recommended of the exhibit featuring works by Pat Holly and Sue Nickels. She also highlighted “Beyond Tradition,” which includes abstract quilts on loan from the National Quilt Museum. Another exhibit will spotlight a creativity challenge that began last year when members were invited to create artwork on seven-inch blocks, all with the theme “My Dream (fill in the blank) Cabana,” resulting in 75 pieces that have been hung together.
“It’s quite striking to see,” she said. “The pieces are small, but the amount of work that went into them is impressive.”
More than 100 vendor booths will be on-site at the show, highlighting local, national and international participants.
AQS was founded in 1984 by Meredith and Bill Schroeder. The current CEO is their grandson.
“Our goal is to make sure quilters receive the recognition they deserve,” Hiatt said. AQS holds four shows a year, including one at its headquarters in Paducah, Ky., and awards thousands of dollars in prizes annually. Other sites are chosen for their impact on the fiber-arts industry and attract people from all over the country.
“Lancaster is one of those shows. It’s a destination show for a lot of people,”
Hiatt explained. “We have bus tours that come in from New England just for this show.” While the Paducah show draws upwards of 35,000 visitors, Hiatt noted that Lancaster’s show typically brings in up to 17,000 people.
“Lancaster is our only non-convention-center show,” Hiatt said, noting that the Nook has proven to be an ideal location. “The lighting is fantastic, and the floor, which is used for sporting events, is easier to stand on than concrete. Many of our attendees and vendors remarked on the comfort of the floor.”
Lancaster’s long tradition
of fiber arts also makes it an ideal location for the show, she said.
“We always look for areas that have a high demographic of quilters,” she stated. “We are always looking to move forward with promoting what our founders set out to do: give national recognition to quilters and their work.” Hiatt recommended registering early for classes as they fill up quickly. Tickets for admission to the show may also be purchased in advance or on-site. For details on QuiltWeek and registration information, visit www.american quilter.com and click on the “Shows and Contests” tab.
The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, 300 Gap Road, Strasburg, has announced on-site railroading merit badge workshops for Saturdays, Sept. 20 and Nov. 15.
The programs will offer an opportunity for boys and girls ages 11 through 17 who are involved in Scouting to learn by working with historic artifacts and model trains. The daylong workshops will feature various railroad-themed activities, including tours, demonstrations, and a G-scale model railroad simulation. All requirements will be fulfilled in a single day. A unique Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania “Railroading Merit Badge” patch is an extra reward
for participants who complete the workshop at the museum.
Scouts must be accompanied by an adult at all times. The workshops are capped at 25 Scouts each and will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. People may purchase tickets for one Scout and one accompanying adult for a set fee or tickets for three Scouts and one adult for a discounted fee.

Back-to-school is an exciting time of anticipation for most students, but for some families, the cost of supplies can be overwhelming. RAISE28 is here to help.
The organization will host its annual Backpack Giveaway from Tuesday, Aug. 12, through Friday, Aug. 15, at 105 Fairview St., Mount Joy. Time slots will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. If backpacks are still available, walk-ins will be accepted on Saturday, Aug. 16, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Backpacks for students of all ages, from kindergarten to 12th grade, will be available for pickup, each filled with school supplies and information about RAISE28.
“Last year we gave away over 650 backpacks to students across Lancaster County,” shared Mark Unger, executive director of RAISE28. “As in years past, our goal is to distribute at least 600 backpacks
this year.”
RAISE28 offers the Backpack Giveaway as a way to bless students and families who find it challenging to make ends meet, he said.
“It also gives us the opportunity to introduce people to our facility and the various programs that we offer,” he noted. “Like the backpacks, all of our programs and services are free of charge.”
The initiative also provides a way for RAISE28 to connect with people and organizations in the wider community.
“The Backpack Giveaway is important to us as it gives us the opportunity to partner with local churches, volunteer organizations, businesses and individuals who join us in this venture to help others who are in need,” Unger explained. “Most of the backpacks are donated by someone in our community, while RAISE28 purchases the school supplies.”
He hopes people who have
students and backpacks at RAISE28
come to RAISE28 before as well as newcomers will sign up for a time slot for the Backpack Giveaway.
“If you are new to our area or have not participated in this event in the past, we want to encourage you to stop by and allow us to share about the services we provide for kids from kindergarten to 12th grade,” he said. “It is the mission of RAISE28 to reach local youth with the life-changing gospel of Jesus Christ.”

The Lancaster County Bird Club (LCBC) will meet on Thursday, Aug. 14, at 7 p.m. at the Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area’s Visitor Center, 100 Museum Road, Stevens. Mike Moore will present “Unconfusing Fall Warblers: A Practical Birding Program to Prepare You for Fall Migration!”
Moore will discuss warblers and how they are not as confusing as they may appear, and he will explain how to identify warblers in the fall. He will cover all of the warblers commonly seen in the mid-Atlantic area.
Moore is a retired biology professor and a past president of Delaware Ornithological Society. He started birding in middle school and has had a lifelong passion for birds, which included completing his doctorate at the University of Washington on the field endocrinology of White-crowned Sparrows. He served on the biology faculty at Arizona State University for 27 years and then moved to the University of Delaware, where he retired after 11 years. He has been funded throughout his career by the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health and has published nearly 100 papers in scientific journals. He also has a passion for dragonflies and serves as a vice president for the Dragonfly Society of the Americas.
The meeting is free and open to the public. For more information, call 717-8563851 or 717-725-2717.
The LCBC will also offer a field trip to Clark Nature Preserve in Pequea on Saturday, Aug. 9, starting at 7 a.m. Participants will explore the meadow and woodlands for summer birds such as buntings, vireos, and tanagers. Attendees must register by 6 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 8, by contacting trip leader Sarah Gotwols at 717-940-3804 or sarahann71880@gmail.com.
