Come Out For A Picnic BY CATHY MOLITORIS

Riders will explore country roads during the Central Pennsylvania Bicycling Trifecta.

Hit The Road On A Bicycling Trifecta yclists will have three times the opportunities to participate in local rides thanks to the Central Pennsylvania Bicycling Trifecta. The event will bring together the Chocolate Tour in Manheim on Saturday, Aug. 6; the Lancaster Bicycle Club’s Covered Bridge Classic in Lancaster on Sunday, Aug. 21; and the Harrisburg Bicycle Club’s Three Creek Century in Newville on Sunday, Sept. 18. “We first started offering the Trifecta in 2017, and people really seemed to like it,” said Marilyn Chastek, public relations chair for the Three Creek Century. “People love challenging themselves, and they like the idea of getting a prize.” She noted that the prize, donated by Shollenberger,

C

Januzzi & Wolfe, Attorneys at Law, is a high-quality commemorative string backpack. It will be offered to anyone who registers for all three rides by Thursday, Aug. 4. Each ride features varying distances, Chastek said, and each route is unique. “For the Chocolate Tour, the focus is on chocolate. You’ll get chocolate at all the rest stops, and you’ll get to ride past chocolate factories,” she said. The Chocolate Tour will begin at the Manheim Farm Show Complex, 502 Adele Ave., and will have varied starts depending on the route, with options for 10 miles up to 100 miles. The event will also include a Fun Walk beginning at 9 a.m. on a 2-mile loop in the newly renovated Chiques Creek Park. Additional activities will include games,

giveaways with prizes, vendors and music. Proceeds from the Chocolate Tour will benefit cancer research. The Covered Bridge Classic is among the most popular cycling events in the region, Chastek stated. “A number of years ago, a major bicycling publication listed it as one of the best 10 rides in the country, and attendance really skyrocketed from there,” she said. As the name implies, the routes will take riders through covered bridges, as well as along country roads. The Covered Bridge Classic will offer 35-, 65- and 100-mile routes starting from seven locations throughout Lancaster County. Proceeds will benefit the Lancaster Bicycle Club’s grant program, which supports a variety of community organizations. The Three Creek Century ride will

include a variety of routes ranging from 18 miles to 105 miles. “We always highlight the food at this event,” Chastek said, noting that the menu will include homemade soup and hundreds of homemade cookies. “This ride also has a rail trail option for people who don’t like to ride on roads.” Proceeds from the Three Creek Century will benefit the Harrisburg Bicycle Club’s grant program, which provides financial support to local nonprofit organizations focused on cycling and wellness. “The Trifecta offers people a good personal challenge,” Chastek noted. “You can modify the route to do as little or as much as you want. It’s a chance to get out and have fun.” For more information or to register for the Trifecta, visit www.threecreekcentury.com.

The congregation at Jerusalem Church in Penryn has been holding a church picnic since the 1800s. The tradition will continue this year with a picnic that’s open to the community on Saturday, Aug. 6. The day will begin with takeout homemade chicken corn soup sales by the quart, from 8 a.m. until sold out. People should bring their own containers and pick up the soup at the Penryn Church Grove on Picnic Grove Road. Everyone is invited to return to the grove for the picnic, which will begin at 4 p.m. “We have table service at our picnic, with waiters and waitresses,” noted Chad Eberly, picnic coordinator. The menu will feature food for purchase, including chicken corn soup, hamburgers, hot dogs, cakes, pies, ice cream and drinks. Along with food, the picnic will offer a variety of entertainment, Eberly said. “We’ll have a kids’ corner with little trinkets kids can purchase, and we’ll have playground equipment for the kids to enjoy,” he stated.
