Sweating It Out At The Manheim Project

People of all ages sporting bright blue T-shirts could be spotted working away throughout the Manheim Borough and surrounding countryside from July 15 to 31, as the seventh annual Manheim Project took place. Hundreds of volunteers from Manheim-area churches joined forces to serve the community, meeting the specific needs of local individuals and families who applied earlier in the year for free assistance with home projects they are unable to complete themselves.

The projects ranged from simple to elaborate, including things like landscaping, weeding, scraping and painting, carpentry and electrical work, plumbing, replacing sidewalks, roofing, trash removal, power washing, and other home repairs.

On July 1, more than 40 people waited at Groffdale Mennonite Church in Leola for a bus to arrive from New York City. The group consisted of host family members who were eager to meet the 26 Fresh Air children who were scheduled to arrive at 3 p.m.

The Sellers family of Denver, Caitlin and Keith and their three children ages 8, 5, and 3, were looking forward to sharing their home in the woods with their assigned child. “We thought it would be a good opportunity to open our world to a child with limited experience,” said Keith, who noted that camping in the backyard was on the family’s agenda. “We have plenty of outdoor activities planned,” added Keith. fishing trip were scheduled, along with the camping. The three children said they love fishing.

Waiting just a short distance away, Tanya Beakes, also of Denver, and her two daughters were anxious to welcome their first Fresh Air child. Hannah Beakes, who is 11, had been communicating with Yvonne Zhuang for some time. “I am looking forward to meeting her in person and getting to know her better,” said Hannah. Tanya noted that the girls already know they have a lot in common, adding that one of their first conversations involved the details of making slime. “We both don’t like roller coasters,” noted Hannah. Tanya said that the family planned to swim, visit a local amusement park, and attend a show at a local Christian theater. “We’ll be showing her all

The Beakes family became interested in hosting a Fresh Air child after talking to fellow church members who recommended the experience. They met with one of the coordinators and decided to sign up. “ We thought it sounded like fun,” shared Tanya.

The Fresh Air Fund is a not-forprofit agency that connects thousands of children from lowincome families in New York City with host families in rural, suburban, and small-town communities along the East Coast and southern Canada. Youths ages 7 to 18 stay free of charge for one or two weeks of fun and relaxation with a host family. Bus drop-offs occur several times throughout the summer in various locations.

For 2019, nearly 100 children left New York City to stay with families in Lancaster County. On July 1, 26 children met their host families at the Junction Center in Manheim in addition to the Leola pickup location.

The event will feature local first responder displays and equipment to include Manheim Borough Police Department, Northwest EMS, Manheim Hope Fire Department, Mastersonville Fire Department, Penryn Fire Department, Army National Guard, Adult Probation and Parole, and Lancaster County Special Response Team. A helicopter demonstration may take place.

The swimming pool will be open to attendees, with no admission fee. Free refreshments will be available in the pavilion.

National Night Out is an annual community-building campaign that promotes policecommunity partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make neighborhoods safer, more caring places to live. A total of more than 38 million people across more than 16,000 communities across the nation are expected to participate in National Night Out events on the same date.

The Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society (LMHS), 2215 Millstream Road, Lancaster, will hold its annual Bookworm Frolic. The annual sale of used books will run from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 14, through Friday, Aug. 16, and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 17.

The sale will feature approximately 40,000 books in 22 categories, including fiction, children’s literature, travel, music, and history.

Separate fees have been set for hardback books and for paperback books. Everything will be half-price on Aug. 17. On Aug. 16 and 17, there will be a box deal, with separate fees per box on Friday and on Saturday.

The sale will also include records, CDs, and DVDs, which will also be included in the halfprice and box deals.

The event will be held rain or shine under a tent. A food truck, TJ’s Ice Cream, will offer refreshments on Aug. 14. LMHS’ bookstore will be open as usual, selling new and used books, folk art, music, and family history resources.

Proceeds from the event will support LMHS’ mission to hold, honor, and share items and stories featuring the lived experiences and faith values of Lancaster Mennonites and interrelated communities.

Street Guest Home, was in disrepair, and the income generated from government funding and disability benefits for the residents was not enough to cover daily and long-term operating costs, let alone any capital improvements needed.

The Hersheys had met Roxanne when a homeless man that they were adoptive caregivers for moved into the home. They felt compelled to help and have tirelessly worked to turn things around for the home’s residents and staff - all the while being amazed at the way God provides.

The Hersheys noted that God continues to show everyone involved in operating Our Home of Hope that this is His project, as countless individuals act as His hands and feet.

This year, a much-needed kitchen renovation was completed - taking that space from cramped and outdated to stateof-the-art.

Capital improvements valued at more than $190,000 were made possible through generous contributions. Key project sponsors included Engel Architects, Andrew Z. Burkholder Construction, The Clark Associates Charitable Foundation, and Premier Custom-Built Cabinetry. In addition, donations provided for

exterior painting, replacement windows, and a new side porch and ramp. A new chair lift and the painting of the interior led to residents remarking, “We are treated like special people.”

When the Hersheys asked one of the contributors, “How can we ever thank you for providing money?” his response was: “When God has blessed you, you should bless others.”

A new dining area provides an open, inviting space where residents can eat and socialize, and it also has a separate medication dispensing area. New tables replaced the old flimsy tables that would shake so badly that something as simple as someone cutting their meat could cause everyone’s beverages to spill.

Our Home of Hope has residents from many walks of life.

Some have come from Water Street Mission and off of the street. Our Home of Hope is a resource for Lancaster County Office of Aging, area churches, and other community agencies seeking a permanent home for individuals in need. For some, the home is a last resort for a place to live.

The Hersheys noted that many of the residents do not have a family member who could care for them, and some of the residents never have visitors.

The residents are family to each other. Mable shared that the recent improvements to the home have helped to make the residence truly “Our Home of Hope” for the residents, some of whom have lived there for more than 15 years. It is their home, and Mable relayed that many say that it now feels like they have a new home. The residents say they truly feel that someone thought them worthy of living in a cheery, permanent home.

Board members are hopeful that others will catch that vision and help with the remaining needs, which include three bathroom updates; laundry room improvements including a new ceiling, floor, and cabinets; and an office floor replacement.

Tennis matches will begin on Monday, Aug. 5, with qualifying play while main draw play in both singles and doubles will kick off on Tuesday, Aug. 6. Students Seek Host Families ASSE International Student Exchange Programs (ASSE), in cooperation with community high schools around the USA, is looking for local families to host boys and girls, ages 15 to 18, from a variety of countries, including Norway, Denmark, Spain, Italy, Japan, and others.

ASSE students come to practice their English and experience American culture, such as food, sports, shopping, etc.

The students also love to share their own culture and language with their host families. Host families welcome these students into their family, not as a guest, but as a family member, giving both the students and families a rich cultural experience.

Giant Food Stores has announced that Giant Direct, Powered by Peapod, is now available at 100 Giant stores and Martin’s Food Markets, under the Martin’s Direct banner, across four states. Giant Direct is Giant Food Stores’ online grocery service that offers pickup and delivery.

Giant Food Stores president Nicholas Bertram and store manager Tim Dinsmore celebrated the opening of the 100th store to offer Giant Direct with a ribboncutting ceremony on July 12 at the Giant store located at 255 S. Spring Garden St., Carlisle. To meet the needs of their neighbors, volunteers from the following Manheim area churches worked together: White Oak Church of the Brethren (COB), Manheim Brethren in Christ, East Fairview COB, Newport, St. Paul’s United Church of Christ, Trinity Evangelical Congregational Church, LCBC, Jerusalem, Erb Mennonite, and Zion Lutheran.

Heat advisories and thunderstorms postponed work on a few days, but the volunteers accomplished the more than 100 projects they set out to complete despite the delays - and amidst the scorching heat.

“We do it because we believe that serving others is part of our call as a church,” explained Stuart Heisey, a volunteer from Newport Church. Heisey was part of a crew serving residents in Penn Valley Village in Lititz. Last summer, a group from Newport built a handicapped-accessible ramp for a single woman who had double knee surgery, and this year they were able to stain it, as well as paint the siding on her trailer.

Kristina Miller, one of the youths from Newport who is serving with the Manheim Project for her third year, said, “I like seeing how grateful the people are.”

Volunteer Kerwin Miller said that more than 150 people from White Oak COB took part in the Manheim Project this year. “We have missionaries all over the world, but it’s nice to do something local,” stated Kerwin. “People are definitely appreciative.”

To make the time feel more like a mission trip in another locale, the youth group from White Oak COB spent the first week of the Manheim Project camping out at the Manheim Farm Show building, eating meals together in between work projects, and playing games, swimming at the Manheim Community Pool, and relaxing in the evenings.

White Oak COB hosted a family night for its congregation on July 24 as a way for families with younger children or those who

Make It With Wool Contest Planned Any person who sews, knits, or crochets garments with wool is invited to enter the Pennsylvania Make It With Wool contest. Five Allstate agency owners and agency staff members recently volunteered with Aaron’s Acres, mentoring older teenagers with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Together, Allstate volunteers and the young adults planned and hosted an ice cream social for residents of Pleasant View Retirement Community.

Thanks to its volunteerism, Aaron’s Acres will receive a $5,000 Allstate Foundation Helping Hands Grant. Aaron’s Acres will use these funds to support its year-round therapeutic programs for children and young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

According to Maria Kapsak, community outreach coordinator at Aaron’s Acres, some of the funds will go toward the cost of camp for children whose families may be unable to afford it.

Aaron’s Acres provides individuals with disabilities ages 5 to 21 years old with year-round therapeutically based and ageappropriate recreational programs. These programs are directed by specially trained and certified staff members in a supportive environment and aim to enhance socialization and communication skills.

Aaron’s Acres is one of thousands of organizations this year to receive Allstate Foundation Helping Hands Grants secured by agency owners, personal financial representatives and licensed sales professionals on behalf of the nonprofits where they volunteer. Partnership Promotes Safe Medication Disposal Rite Aid and The Rite Aid Foundation have announced that more than 550 medication disposal units across the nation are now searchable on Google Maps, making it easier for people to safely dispose of unneeded or unwanted medications.

To find a safe medication disposal unit in a Rite Aid store or a KidCents Safe Medication Disposal Unit in a local police station or law enforcement agency, users can search on Google (including Google Maps on a browser or mobile device) for “medication disposal near me.” Google will show results with the closest Rite Aid medication disposal units for people to safely dispose of their unwanted prescription drugs.

The partnership with Google is one of several initiatives Rite Aid has implemented as part of its comprehensive strategy to address prescription drug abuse and misuse. In 2017, The Rite Aid Foundation launched the KidCents Safe Medication Disposal program. The program provides law enforcement agencies in communities served by Rite Aid with free medication disposal units for individuals to safely dispose of LARGE EGGS Orange Juice (15 dozen case 79¢ doz.)

UZRC Sets Cottage Open House United Zion Retirement Community (UZRC), 722 Furnace Hills Pike, Lititz, will host a cottage open house on Friday, Aug. 2, from 3 to 5 p.m. The open house will feature a 1,200-square-foot, two-bedroom, one-and-a-half bath cottage that is currently available. All of United Zion’s cottages feature one-floor living with

expired or unwanted medications. Since its launch, the program has expanded to 18 states.

To date, the foundation has partnered with more than 400 law enforcement agencies to make more than 450 units available to customers and communities. In 2018, Rite Aid announced plans to install 100 medication disposal units in stores across the country.

In addition to medication disposal units, The Rite Aid Foundation’s KidCents program has made a multi-year commitment to the Prescription Drug Safety program, a digital course about prescription drug abuse prevention. Developed by EVERFI, the course uses an evidence-based public health approach to empower high school students with the skills and knowledge they need to make safe and healthy decisions about prescription drugs and prevent abuse before it occurs. As a result of The Rite Aid Foundation’s commitment, the Prescription Drug Safety program will be made available to more than 400 high schools in California, Michigan, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Washington at no cost.

Hair Cuttery To Offer Share-A-Haircut Program

Hair Cuttery, a chain of hair salons, will donate back-to-school haircuts to children in need this summer. From Thursday, Aug. 1, through Thursday, Aug. 15, for every child up to age 18 who purchases a haircut at one of Hair Cuttery’s nearly 900 salons, one free haircut certificate will be donated to an underprivileged child in the community.

Through the Share-A-Haircut program, Hair Cuttery aims to donate tens of thousands of free haircut certificates ahead of the new school year. Certificates will be distributed with the help of more than 200 local government and nonprofit organizations in communities across the country.
