When National Night Out began more than 40 years ago, it stemmed from a mission to strengthen relationships between the police and community members. That goal has not changed over the decades, and when Manheim participates in the annual event, people will have the opportunity to meet and greet first responders in a casual setting.
Manheim will hold its National Night Out from 6 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 5, at the Manheim Farm Show complex, 502 E. Adele Ave.
“We are hoping to provide a relaxed and positive atmosphere that allows us to strengthen partnerships with the Manheim
community,” said Sara Lucky, Manheim Borough Police Department office staff member. “The families in the Manheim community are invited to join us for a fun-filled
evening where you can meet your local first responders and more.”
She noted that Manheim has been holding the event for several years as a way to introduce visitors

The community picnic hosted by Jerusalem Church is some old-fashioned fun - literally. The church has been holding the event since the 1800s. This year’s picnic will take place on Saturday, Aug. 2, at the Penryn Church Grove on Picnic Grove Road in Penryn.
“We encourage people to come check us out for a little step back in time,” said Chad Eberly, picnic coordinator. “The picnic hasn’t changed much in the over 150 or so years we have held it. The food is all homemade, a cheap meal to feed your family and in a unique outdoor setting. There is a kids’ stand where small toys may be purchased; a playground for the kids to use; and plenty of space to sit and enjoy a nice evening of live music, food and fellowship.”
Prior to the picnic, which will begin at 4 p.m., people may pick up homemade chicken corn soup, available for takeout beginning at 8 a.m. until sold out. Attendees should bring their own quart containers.

Manheim is a community that’s known for its agricultural impact, and students from Manheim Central High School underscored that reputation when they competed in the PA FFA State Convention held at Penn State University’s main campus in June. Five teams competed, as well as seven individual students, for a total of 27 Manheim FFA members attending the convention. Three teams - Agricultural Mechanics and Technology,
“The picnic goes from approximately 4 to 8 p.m. for a sit-down meal,” Eberly said. “Just find a seat and look for someone in a blue Jerusalem shirt to wait on you.”
The menu will include chicken corn soup, hamburgers, hot dogs, cakes, pies, ice cream and drinks. “This year, we will also allow to-go purchases of soup during the picnic,” Eberly noted.
Picnicgoers are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs and sit under the trees in the grove to enjoy live music, which will begin at 4:30 p.m.

Kids can enjoy an inflatable carnival game, and food will be available for purchase from a variety of food trucks, including Twisted Sisters, The Pretzel Place, Piper Belles BBQ and Scott’s Artisan pizza. The police department and participating organizations will offer some giveaways, and Ryan Yarnell, school resource officer for Manheim Central School District, will present a talk at 7 p.m. on “Online Dangers,” including safety tips and realworld examples. People are encouraged to bring a blanket or lawn chair for the presentation.
People who attend National Night Out may also support the Manheim Central Food Pantry by bringing donations for a stuff-a-cruiser initiative at the event.
Donations to the pantry play a large role in supporting the nutritional needs of the Manheim community, she noted, encouraging people to bring nonperishable items in a grocery bag to donate. Items needed include all canned goods, such as fruits, vegetables and soup; cereal; applesauce; dried pasta; boxed meals, such as macaroni and cheese; Spam; and personal care items, such as toothpaste, tissues, toilet paper and soap.
While Manheim’s National Night Out is hosted by the Manheim Borough Police Department, it is truly a community event, Lucky said. Other participating groups include Mount Hope Fire Company, Pennsylvania SPCA, Manheim Central Food Pantry, PA State Parole - Lancaster, Manheim Community Library, Penn Medicine, Hope Served, Bethany Children’s Home and Manheim Borough municipal staff members.

generational congregation can do together. Many have grown up being a part of the church picnic and have fond memories of the event. It’s important to us to continue the event.”
“The Manheim Central Food Pantry has served residents within the Manheim Central School District since 2012 and plays a vital part in providing supplemental monthly food needs to local families,” Lucky shared. “The pantry operates in conjunction with the Manheim Ministerium and is a member of the Central PA Food Bank. The pantry is operated by an all-volunteer board of directors and staffed by volunteers from within the community.”
National Night Out promises to be a fun evening, Lucky said, with an important purpose. She added, “(It) promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make our area a safer, more caring place to live and work.”

“Between these two bands’ (performances), we will hold an old-fashioned cake walk,” Eberly noted. “If you don’t know what that is, it is when people march around the bandstand and when the music stops, they stop. The person in the secret spot gets a baked good. Think musical chairs, but with cake.”
The picnic is a favorite event among church members, who enjoy the opportunity to reach out to the community, Eberly remarked.
“We get to talk with local people. We get to show them who we are and share a little piece of history,” he said. “I think it has lasted so long because it has been something that our multi -
He added that pastor Jonathan Shirk and several of the church elders will be in attendance at the picnic.
“If anyone would like to know more about our church, its ministry or hear the good news of Jesus Christ, we encourage them to ask questions,” Eberly said.
All profits from the sale of food go toward updating and renovating the picnic grove area, which is available for rent to the public.

When Lisa Palmquist joined Pilot International almost 20 years ago, she soon had a big goal in mind.
“My desire to be president of the organization began early in my Pilot career,” she shared. “I had such respect and admiration for the presidents that I said to myself, ‘I’m going to be her one day,’ whenever one of the presidents was addressing the membership at the annual convention.”
That dream will become a reality for Lisa when she begins a one-year term as president of Pilot International in July of 2026. She will be installed as president-elect of the organization in Charlotte, N.C., on Saturday, July 26.
Pilot International is an international organization founded in 1921 in Macon, Ga., to promote brain health and wellness and support caregivers. Lisa, who lives in Landisville, is a member of the local club, Pilot Club of Central Pennsylvania, which meets the fourth Tuesday of the month at the Columbia Fire Department.
She joined the Pilot Club of Lancaster in 2008 and then left in 2015 to charter the Pilot Club of Central Pennsylvania with 21 members.
“We just celebrated our 10th anniversary with 29 members,” she remarked.
As president of Pilot International, Lisa will serve as chief executive director.
“Responsibilities as president of Pilot International will be to preside at business sessions, report on the work and state of the organization at the annual international convention and during the year as needed, appoint special committees and fill vacancies of the paid staff and volunteer positions that arise during the year, to name a few,” she said.
Prior to rising to the role of president, Lisa has dedicated extensive time and talent to the organization on the national and international levels.
“I have served on the International Executive Committee for two years
as a director, a year as secretary and this past year as vice president,” she remarked, noting that she was elected president-elect and will automatically assume the role of president in 2026 in Oklahoma City.
“While serving on the International Executive Committee, I have served the districts as a representative of the executive committee for Florida, Michigan-Indiana, Mississippi, Tennessee, Alabama, North Carolina, Georgia, Heartland and Kentucky-Ohio-West Virginia. As president-elect, I will serve the Bahamas and another district, and as president, I will serve Japan and Hawaii.”
Lisa noted that her goal of heading the organization stemmed from the impact the nonprofit makes as well as the people she’s connected with through her service work.
“I have met some of the kindest, most service-oriented women from all over the world that I call my closest friends,” she said. “The most important reason for wanting to be president of Pilot International is believing in the mission of Pilot International - to influence positive change in communities throughout the world, by coming together in friendship and service, focusing on encouraging brain safety and health and supporting those who care for others.”
Locally, the Pilot Club of Central Pennsylvania organizes a variety of community initiatives, including providing more than 300 free helmets to children of Lancaster County just in the past year, 950 new children’s books to newborns discharged from the UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital, and 120 Coping Kits to the UPMC Lititz emergency room for children undergoing the traumatic experience of an emergency.
“These are just a few of the projects that the club shares to serve our community,” Lisa said. “We support the Hershey Mill Home with monthly activities and the Alzheimer’s Walk. … Project Linus receives no-sew
blankets from us. Pick-me-up gifts are given to many individuals and groups. For example, an extra-large basket of goodies was presented to the West York Police Department and staff to show community care and support after the loss of one of their colleagues during a shooting.”
When she’s not serving through Pilot International, Lisa dedicates time to Hospice & Community Care in Lancaster and Salem Church in Manheim.
“I love spending time on my deck with my pool and flowers, and I love to travel,” she said. She and her husband, Scott, also enjoy spending time with their family, which includes four granddaughters, one grandson and two dogs.
Lisa encourages anyone with a heart for service
to consider joining the Pilot Club of Central Pennsylvania.
“We are always looking for new members of all ages,” she said. “If you enjoy serving others and having fun, then Pilot is for you! Our club is diverse and very welcoming with the belief that you do what you can do. We have young mothers and older members.”
For more information on the club, contact Lisa at 717-951-1432 or lpalm quist948@gmail.com.

Marketing Plan and Milk Quality and Products - were named state champions and will advance to the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis this fall. The Agricultural Sales team was named state runner-up, and the Environment and Natural Resources team placed fifth in the state out of 28 teams. Students also competed in Livestock Evaluation, Veterinary Science, Horse Evaluation and Poultry Evaluation.
The Agricultural Mechanics team consisted of Avery Kirchner, Chase Kirchner, Cole Niebel and Andrew Waddington. Avery took first place overall, and Chase earned second place.
The Milk Quality and Products team members were Laney Hollinger, Alexa Burke, Karley Pickel, Caitlynn Leister and Alyssa Siegrist. Laney placed second overall.
Members of the Marketing Plan team were Aubrey Myers, Reece Weaver and Garrett Barnett. The Agricultural Sales team was composed of Nate Huber, Bailey Hockenberry, Abbey Ill and Adam Winkler. Nate placed third overall. Members of the Environment and Natural Resources team were Joel Hershey, Brandon Wenger, Sydney Moyer and Lauren Smith.
“The teams that competed primarily were in competition over two days of the convention,” shared Allyson Heckman, Agricultural Mechanics educator and FFA adviser for Manheim Central High School. “They complete individual tests and hands-on skills practicums, which are judged and assessed by industry professionals. Additionally, each team completed a team activity where they must work together to solve a problem and present their findings or solution.” All competitions are aligned to real-world industry standards to ensure that
students are experiencing what a career in that area might look like, she said, adding, “Many Pennsylvania industry professionals sponsor the competitions in which their work is related to encourage students to consider that career field.”
Team members showcased their skills in everything from making sales pitches and creating marketing materials to identifying milk fat content and water quality.
As Heckman explained, all students compete individually, but if they are on a team, they have additional activities they must complete. Their individual scores are then combined with the team scores for overall scores and placement.
She said it’s not unusual for Manheim Central FFA teams to perform well at the competition.
“We have some amazing self-motivated members who have an intense desire to make it to the National FFA Convention, which is our version of a national championship,” she said. “Due to the drive and determination of our students, it is common for us to have one or two winning teams a year. To have three winning teams and one runner-up is a testament to the students, their love for learning, their desire to showcase excellence and to represent
Manheim with pride.”
Winning teams are months in the making, she emphasized, noting that students practice before and after school with their designated coaches.
“Our Manheim FFA members are very competitive and want to continue our chapter’s legacy of excellence each year at the state convention,” she said.
Once the students have formed teams, they use resource materials provided by the PA FFA and National FFA associations to prepare for competition.
The national convention will be held from Wednesday, Oct. 29, through Saturday, Nov. 1.
“We will leave Oct. 28 and drive two vans to the convention where 70,000 FFA members will be in attendance from Maine to Hawaii and from Alaska to the Virgin Islands,” Heckman said.
She noted that traveling to the national event is expensive, and the team has a fundraising goal of $10,000 to get all three teams to the event.
“If anyone in the community is interested in sponsoring the team, they can reach out to me,” she said.
She added that participating in agricultural classes and FFA has universal benefits, whether or not students have a background in the industry or live on a
farm.
“It is for everyone and anyone with a passion for plants, animals, the environment, knowing where your food comes from, growing as a leader and so much more,” she said.
“The knowledge, skills and opportunities our Manheim FFA members receive are life-changing, résumé building and provide incredible personal growth for every student to flourish wherever their passions take them.”
To support the FFA teams traveling to the national competition, contact Heckman at HeckmanAl@ manheimcentral.org.
