From classics to muscle cars, street rods, trucks, motorcycles and more, all vehicles are welcome to participate in the Manheim Sertoma Club’s Fourth Annual Car Show. The show will be held on Saturday, Sept. 12, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Elstonville Sportsmen’s Association, 3133 Pinch Road, Manheim.
“If you are passionate about cars and fundraising for nonprofits, please join us for a beautiful day to drive in, relax, reminisce, take a walk to admire some really unique, rare models, original or restored vehicles in the show,” said Mark Haldeman, sergeant in arms. “While enjoying good music and food, it’s
a chance to talk shop and connect with other car enthusiasts.”
Fifty awards will be presented, including 46 that are businesssponsored awards, said Wendy Wood, club member and event organizer. The four additional
awards are People’s Choice, Participant’s Choice, Sertoma Choice and Motorcycle Best in Show.
“Each contributing business is invited to (attend) the show and select the winner of their engraved award,” Wood explained.

A Night Out With Those Who Serve

Police officers are people, too. That’s part of the message of National Night Out, a nationwide event held to bring the community and first responders together in a fun and casual way. Manheim will host a National Night Out celebration on Tuesday, Aug. 4, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. It will be held at the Manheim Farm Show Complex, 502 E. Adele Ave.
“National Night Out is a good way to help the community get to know some of our officers and have fun, too,” said Scot Funk, mayor of Manheim. “It’s a chance for everyone to see that police officers and other first responders are regular people. Our aim is for kids not to be hesitant to approach an officer if they need help.”
The festivities will include a bounce house obstacle course, food from Piper Belle’s BBQ and Twisted Sisters Ice Cream, coffee and snacks from Hope Served and more.

Back to school season can be expensive for families, and Teen Central wants to help. The nonprofit will provide free backpacks, school supplies and hygiene products for students of all ages to check off their shopping lists. The giveaway will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday, Aug. 3 and 4, at Teen Central, 15 S. Wolf St., Manheim.

Numerous community organizations, groups and nonprofits will have tables set up with information about their efforts as well. Participants will include Manheim Community Library; the Girl Scouts; the SPCA; Lancaster County Children and Youth Social Service Agency; Manheim Community Life Group; Hope Served; and people representing community health and wellness organizations, the state parole board and victim and witness services.
Held annually on the first Tuesday in August, National Night Out began in 1984
to promote police and community partnerships. The first year, 2.5 million people across 400 communities in 23 states participated in the event. Over the years, the celebration has grown to encompass 38 million people in 17,000 communities throughout the United States.
Funk said Manheim has been participating in the program for at least 13 years.

Gretna Music will hold the 40th annual Mount Gretna Tour of Homes on Saturday, Aug. 1, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. This self-guided walking tour invites visitors to explore 10 distinctive homes, three historic buildings, and outdoor art throughout Mount Gretna, rain or shine.
Proceeds from ticket sales will support Gretna Music, which is celebrating its 51st season of presenting live music - including classical, jazz, and world music performed at the Mount Gretna Playhouse.
Among this year’s featured homes is La Bella Zucca, a 1900s cottage tucked along the tree-lined paths of Mount Gretna. The owners purchased the home in 2022 and soon began renovations. Inspired by the warmth of the interior wood beams and woodwork - which transported them back to trips to Italy - the couple chose a rich Tuscan color scheme to guide the remodel. The structure includes eight stained-glass windows, and the front porch provides a clandestine view of the open-air Mount Gretna Playhouse.
Another home on the
tour is the Cottage. Originally built in 1920, the home has been updated and well maintained over the years, requiring only a few additional improvements. Although modest in size at 790 square feet, the home has an efficient layout. The front porch has become a serene retreat for the owners.
The map will also guide the tourgoer to three recent outdoor art installments and three historic buildings, including the Mount Gretna Area Historical Society.
Tickets are limited. Church Plans Community Picnic
Jerusalem Church will hold its annual community picnic on Saturday, Aug. 1, at 4 p.m. at the Penryn Church Grove on Picnic Grove Road in Penryn.
The Moonlighters and the Lancaster Marimba Ensemble will perform. Church members will serve chicken corn soup, hamburgers, hot dogs, and homemade
cakes and pies, along with ice cream. Quarts of soup will be available for takeout beginning at 8 a.m. Cash and checks will be accepted.

A Global Feast for Hope

Your passport won’t be checked at the door, but your taste buds will travel the world. From Ethiopian specialties to Caribbean flavors, Taste of the Nations will bring the cuisines of more than 10 countries together under one roof while raising funds for Hope Within Ministries. The annual benefit for the nonprofit will be held on Thursday, Oct. 1, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at Elizabethtown Brethren in Christ Church, 996 E. High St.
Although the event is a few months away, people are encouraged to purchase tickets soon, said Laurie Reichert, director of development for Hope Within.
“Admission is on sale now and available through (Wednesday,) Sept. 30, or until sold out,” she said.
“Last year, this event sold out, so purchase admission now.”
The event will feature an international culinary experience, with proceeds benefiting the organization located in Elizabethtown.
“Guests will visit each food table - each representing a country - to sample
a food item native to that respective country. There will also be some American food and a dessert table,” Reichert shared. “We had 10 countries represented last year. This year we have a lot of those returning and have added additional food tables, including Canada, Caribbean and Philippines.”
Other countries that will be represented include Ethiopia, Afghanistan, China, Thailand, India, Ukraine and Russia.
Along with food, a silent auction will feature curated items from around the world.
Taste of the Nations offers a way for the organization to spotlight its services and the people it serves.

Diane Wolf, executive director of Hope Within Ministries, added, “This event also helps people understand who Hope Within is and the resources available to our community.”
Hope Within Ministries serves low-income, uninsured residents of Lancaster, Lebanon and Dauphin counties with free primary health care services.
“We offer dental services by donation and low-cost, sliding-scale counseling services to the general public,” Reichert said.
“Hope Within Ministries is solely supported by donations through business and church partnerships, individuals and fundraising efforts.”
Proceeds from Taste of the Nations will be used to offset the organization’s operational costs.
“Some supplies, particularly disposable dental supplies, are expensive to purchase, and we have to renew software subscriptions, specifically medical software programs used for
our medical and dental services,” Reichert explained.
Adding authenticity to the event, volunteers will prepare and serve the food at Taste of the Nations.
“Some are former patients who received services from Hope Within. They are showing their appreciation by preparing dishes from their native countries, such as Ukraine,” Reichert said.
“Other volunteers were missionaries in the countries for which they are preparing and serving sample dishes, such as Thailand.”
She emphasized that the fundraiser would not be possible without the support of sponsors, including Coram Deo Advisors, Enders Insurance, Highmark Penn State Health, Jon’s Tax Service, Sharp Shopper, The Hess Agency, Waste Hauler Sup-
port Services and WitsEnd Home Works.
Reichert said Taste of the Nations promises to be a fun and flavorful night out.
“This is a great opportunity to sample different dishes from all over the world under one roof for a reasonable admission price,” she said, noting that there is a discount for purchasing tickets prior to Sunday, Aug. 30, and a discount for purchasing six or more admissions. Beyond vehicles, the show will offer a wide variety of food options, as well as activities for the whole family.

Coffee and doughnuts, options from a food wagon and Kreider’s ice cream will be for sale during the show, and a DJ with Bill Coder Entertainment will provide live music.
“Grab family or friends to have your picture taken in our fun photo booth by 30 West Entertainment,” Wood said. “Every half hour we will draw door prizes for owners of show cars.”
A silent auction and 50/50 giveaways will be held during the show, and there will be opportunities to win additional prizes.
“Door prizes are gift cards donated by local restaurants. Many (giveaway), buy-now and silent auction items are donated by local businesses and individuals in the community of Lancaster and Lebanon counties,” Wood said, noting that the club’s Facebook page will showcase available items.
The car show began after Wood joined the Manheim Sertoma Club four years ago.
“I was thinking, ‘How can I help our club organize a new venue to raise money for particular nonprofit organizations in the community?’” she recalled. “I love classic cars, the muscle sound of the engine and the image of the different and unique vehicles rolling through the streets. I loved going to car shows with my parents when I was a teenager with their 1969 Camaro. The music was great; the people and stories were interesting
to listen to, and there were so many great classic cars that caught my eye.”
She presented the idea of a car show to the club members, and the event was created to bring the community together and raise money for people in need.
Proceeds from the show will benefit Hope Served, which will use its portion of the proceeds for job training and employment for individuals with disabilities; Manheim Community Life Group, which will use its portion to support ongoing programs at the Home on Ferdinand, which includes providing individualized case management for each of the residents and free counseling; and Mt. Hope Nazarene Retirement Community, which will use its portion of the proceeds to help meet the gap of $150 cost per day to provide skilled nursing care to its residents. Representatives from all three nonprofits will be on-site during the car show.
“Last year we had 240 registered show cars from all over Lancaster, Lebanon and Dauphin counties at our show,” Wood shared. “Family and friends that came out to support all the nonprofits accounted for more than 500 people in attendance. It was amazing the amount of community support.”

Orders will be accepted through Friday, Aug. 7, and the food will be available for pickup on Saturday, Aug. 29, from 6 to 7 p.m. Orders may be picked up at two locations at Pleasant View - in the circle in front of the West Lawn buildings, 3000 Red Oak Drive, Manheim, or in the Town Square North lobby, near the Hearth & Harrow restaurant, 2100 Town Square, Manheim.

Pulling off a successful car show requires a team effort, Wood noted.
“We have great appreciation to have the support of so many businesses and individuals within the community who have sponsored this year’s show and in years past,” she said. “We have a community with huge helping hearts willing to listen and give for the care of others. Thank you!”
The deadline to preregister for the car show is Sept. 1, and anyone who registers by that date will receive a goodie bag. There is a discount for preregistering. People may also register their vehicle on the day of the show for an additional cost.
The car show is a cash-only event; an ATM will be available on-site.
The Manheim Sertoma Club meets on the first and third Thursdays of the month at 7:30 p.m. in the Manheim Scout Hall, 1 Scout Alley. The club is always seeking new members.

The Egg Roll Lady is a Vietnamese food vendor owned by the Duong family. The egg rolls are frequently offered at community yard sales and other events.
The Auxiliary is selling original and veggie egg rolls as well as duck sauce. The egg rolls come in packs of six. They can be refrigerated and frozen, and reheating instructions will be provided with each order.

One-quarter of the residents in personal care and half the residents in skilled care receive benevolent care, for a total of $3 million each year. This includes the difference between the cost of care and what Pleasant View receives from Medicaid.

Mount Gretna Art Show Posted
The 52nd annual Mount Gretna Art Show will fill the wooded streets and parks of the historic Chautauqua community on Saturday, Aug. 15, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday, Aug. 16, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., rain or shine. GPS users may navigate to 101 Chautauqua Drive, Mount Gretna.

The organization expects to provide supplies for about 200 students across all grade levels when the giveaway is held assembly line style in Teen Central’s main gathering room.
“We will invite students and parents to bring their own backpack or bag - or take one of our free backpacks available - and come to our building … to pack their bags with the free items being provided,” Heying said. “There will be a limit to the number of supplies students can take to ensure that everyone gets an opportunity to choose from the variety of items being provided.”

“Along with the school supplies and hygiene items, we will also have bookmarks with our Teen Central information and start date for the school year,” Heying said. “Extra goodies like candy, snow cones and additional information about Teen Central will also be available for the community to take as they take advantage of this free resource/event.”
This is the third year for the school supply giveaway.
Teen Central staff members started the event to lessen the burden back-to-school shopping can place on families.
“After doing a little research, we discovered that back-to-school shopping is suggested to be the second-largest spend for families annually behind the holidays. Many families

spend over $50 per child on school supplies alone, and that doesn’t include other back-to-school items like clothing, shoes, basic hygiene supplies or required uniforms or technology for some grade levels,” Heying said. “To think of the financial burden this may place on some families during a time of year when excitement should be in the air is concerning, and here at Teen Central we would like to help.”
Students will be able to pick up pencils, erasers, notebooks, binders, folders, scissors and more, along with personal care items such as shampoo, body wash, hand sanitizer and tissues. Last year, Teen Central added free backpacks to its giveaway and distributed more than 125 to the community.
“One of my favorite things about Manheim is the way that our town rallies around and supports needs in our community,” Heying said. “I would like to say a special ‘thank you’ to the many individuals, organizations and church groups who rally behind this event and help provide funding, manpower and support to our ministry and particularly this event.”
Teen Central is a Christian nonprofit youth center that serves middle school and high school students in the Manheim Central School District. Programming is offered for two hours a day Monday through Thursday.

The Edilson Sobagal Latin Jazz Ensemble will perform from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. The group features Edilson Sobagal on drums; Ryan Kauffman, saxophone; John Gingerich, bass; and Hector Rosado, percussion.
The Mount Gretna Marching Band will present a strolling performance at 4 p.m.
On Aug. 16, Tom Hilliker: Friends and Family will be featured from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The performers will be Tom Hilliker on bass; Jerry Hilliker, guitar; David Hilliker, drums; Bob Meashey, trumpet and flugelhorn; and Andy Roberts, piano.
The Hot Club of Reading All Stars will play New Orleans jazz from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. The group features Ken Gehret, fiddle and vocals; Chris Heslop, saxophone, clarinet, and washboard; Josh Taylor, guitar; and Bruce Campbell, bass.
Emerging musicians will offer pop-up performances throughout the weekend.
Parking is available at Soldiers Field on Timber Road near the lake, with shuttle
service from WellSpan Philhaven. The Mount Gretna Volunteer Fire Company will offer shuttle service for people with disabilities. Parking is free.
During show hours, Route 117 will be closed, and traffic patterns will be adjusted. All routes will be marked and staffed.
There is an admission fee, with a discount for those who pay with cash. Children under age 12 will receive free admission. No pets are permitted on the Art Show grounds.
Proceeds from the Art Show support the cultural programs of the Pennsylvania Chautauqua, contribute significantly to the Mount Gretna Volunteer Fire Company, and fund community projects throughout the area. Media support is provided in part by a grant from the Lebanon County Commissioners.
