oticing an abundance of stray and feral cats in Manheim, Samantha MacIntyre felt compelled to help. In 2021, she began doing community-based
trap-neuter-return (TNR) and cat welfare efforts, hoping to help cats experiencing injury, illness or abandonment.
“What began as small-scale, personal rescue and sterilization efforts quickly grew as the need
became more apparent,” MacIntyre said, noting that her mission became Precious Paws Community Cats, a nonprofit organization based in Manheim. “Formalizing the organization in 2023 allowed us to expand our impact, organize

A mural coming to the south wall of Zion Lutheran Preschool in Manheim will showcase community, collaboration, music and science. “Reach for Stars,” created by Jason and Katherine Horst of Horst Arts, will add beauty to the space and highlight some of the history of the town.
As Jason explained, the preschool wanted a mural with this theme, and as he began to work on the project, he learned of Lancaster Marimba Ensemble’s interest in creating a mural to celebrate Manheim’s own Clair Omar Musser, a master of the marimba.

For the second year in a row, Teen Central will host an initiative aimed at supporting students in the Manheim Central School District. The organization, located at 15 S. Wolf St., Manheim, will host Pack-A-Backpack Day, when students in kindergarten through grade 12 who live within the district’s confines will be invited to pick up school supplies and personal hygiene items. The event will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on
“When we learned that Musser also worked for NASA and even built a one-of-a-kind celestaphone, with the frame and the bars forged from 678 pounds of meteorites, the collaboration made sense even more,” he said. Stephanie Smith, director of the Lancaster Marimba Ensemble, came on board to help with the project as well. She explained that Musser’s final design project was the celestaphone, which combined his interest in music and outer space and which resembles a pedal glockenspiel. Smith noted that Musser helped to propel the marimba into the spotlight as both a solo and ensemble instrument.
“(Musser) was a marimba virtuoso, composer, conductor, teacher and designer of mallet instruments and is hailed as the largest influence on marimba performance in America,” she said. “Musser organized large marimba orchestras of 100

volunteers and access the resources needed to better serve our mission and the cats in our community.”
Precious Paws is an animal welfare organization focused on humane, long-term solutions for community cats.
“Our mission centers around TNR, providing medical care to injured cats in the field and finding safe placement for socialized or abandoned cats when possible,” MacIntyre stated. “We are not a traditional rescue or shelter. We do not accept owner surrenders, and we do not have an open intake policy. Our work is targeted, fieldbased and designed to reduce suffering and prevent future cat overpopulation at the root.”
To help fulfill its mission, Precious Paws members are hard at work building and establishing a cat barn that will serve as a dedicated space for recovering, rehabilitating and socializing cats that need time and support before being returned to their colonies or, in some cases, adopted into homes.
“It’s a way to bridge the gap between field-based TNR efforts and long-term care, especially for cats who don’t fit into traditional shelter systems,” MacIntyre said.
The structure is currently in progress, but the organization has hit a pause due to funding.
“Like many grassroots nonprofits, we’re relying entirely on donations, grants and local support to complete it. Once finished, the barn
Monday and Tuesday, Aug. 4 and 5.
“After doing a little research, I discovered that back-to-school shopping is suggested to be the second-largest spend for families annually behind the holidays,” said Janelle Heying, executive director of Teen Central. “Many families spend over $50 per child on school supplies alone, and that doesn’t include other back-to-school items like clothing, shoes, basic hygiene supplies or required uniforms or technology for some grade levels. To think of the financial burden this may place on some families during a time of year when excitement should be in the air is saddening, and here at Teen Central we would like to help!”
During the two-hour time slots either day, students, accompanied by their parents or guardians, can bring their own backpacks if they have them to Teen Central to fill with items, including pencils, erasers, notebooks, binders, folders, rulers, scissors, shampoo, body wash, tissues, hand sanitizer and
will allow us to better treat medical cases, provide temporary holding space for recovery and serve as a base for volunteers and educational outreach,” she remarked. “It’s important to note that the cat barn is not a public facility. It is located on private property and is not open to the public for drop-ins or animal intake. The space will be used exclusively by volunteers and team members to support our animal welfare work in the field.”
To help raise funds for Precious Paws, the organization held a bingo fundraiser in June that garnered almost $7,500 to add to the $10,000 raised last year for the cat barn.
“We’re incredibly grateful to the community for that support and are working hard to build on that momentum,” MacIntyre said, noting that while the barn won’t be open to the public, people can still follow along with its progress through the organization’s social media pages and website. Precious Paws also plans to host a Tats for Cats tattoo fundraiser in the near future and sells merchandise with proceeds benefitting the nonprofit. She attributes the organization’s success to this support from community members, as well as the dedication of the Precious Paws board of directors.
MacIntyre emphasized that there are many ways people can support the organization, including donating funds toward surgeries, medications and supplies for field
care; helping with trapping, transport or recovery support; serving as short-term fosters for cats recovering from injury; and spreading awareness by educating others about TNR and the importance of sterilizing community cats.
“We also operate pet store adoption spaces specifically for friendly or abandoned cats trapped‚ during our TNR efforts,” she said. “These are not general intake sites, but dedicated spots where special cats can find homes.”
Although community cats are part of every neighborhood, they are often overlooked when it comes to public support or policy, MacIntyre said.
“Without intervention, colonies grow, cats suffer from preventable illness and injury, and the cycle continues,” she explained. “Precious Paws plays a vital role in breaking that cycle. Our field-based work provides sterilization, medical care and public education, reducing
nuisance issues and improving the lives of both animals and residents. By targeting the root causes, we make a long-term impact - not just a temporary fix.”
She stays motivated in her mission by believing in the need for the work.
“There are so many cats out there who don’t qualify for traditional shelter intake, because they’re feral, sick or simply out of sight,” she said. “They’re still suffering, still worthy of care and still part of our community. We do this work because it’s necessary and because these cats deserve dignity, even if no one sees them. Every time we trap, fix and return a cat - or give an injured one a second chancewe’re changing that animal’s entire world.”

more.
“Last year it was our goal to provide free school supplies and hygiene items to approximately 200 students across all grade levels, and this year we are aiming even higher,” Heying said. “At our 2024 Pack-A-Backpack-Day event, we served over 150 students, and now with new community partnerships, we are hoping to serve even more.”
New this year, Teen Central will also provide free backpacks to any student who needs one.
“Last year we did not advertise a backpack giveaway, but it clearly was a need within our community,” Heying noted. “We ended up handing out 35 free backpacks, so our goal this year is to have enough to give a new backpack to every student who comes to this event.”
All items to fill the backpacks will be laid out on tables throughout Teen Central’s main gathering room, with a suggested quantity to take noted for each item. If a school list requires more than the
suggested quantity, students are welcome to take as many as they need, Heying said.
“We ask that people enter through our front door, and then we have a sign-in sheet for us to be able to track how many people we served and how many supplies we gave away,” she explained. “Students and parents can go through our room assembly line-style and pick which items they would like to take. At the end of the line, we have free snow cones and other goodies to give away before families leave.”
Heying said she was impressed by the community response to the program last year in terms of gathering items to donate.
“One of my favorite things about Manheim is the way that our town rallies around and supports needs in our community,” she stated, noting that donations have provided backpacks in a variety of colors and designs for students of all ages. “The support and financial generosity that continues to pour in surrounding Pack-A-Backpack
Days continues to blow me away!” She expressed gratitude toward individuals, small businesses, community groups and churches who have helped to cover the cost of the entire event.
During the school year, Teen Central provides free programs and activities with a Christian focus to youths in the community. The Pack-A-Backpack event helps the organization fulfill its mission of supporting local families.
“We understand that there is a lot that comes along with backto-school shopping to excel during the school year. The cost can pile up quick,” Heying said. “Through Pack-A-Backpack Day, Teen Central hopes that we are able to give local families a head start with their back-to-school needs. We encourage people to attend to see what items may be helpful in checking some objects off of their shopping lists.”

Participants in these orchestras hailed in part from the Lancaster area, as Musser recruited his childhood friends to perform, she noted, adding that after the concerts, the marimbas and performers made their way back to the Lancaster area, where they continued to play, give lessons and create a culture of appreciation for the marimba.

The Lancaster Marimba Ensemble has been performing since 1991 and currently features five regular performers, including Smith, who is also the ensemble’s director.
Coincidentally, the ensemble has three current members with ties to Manheim, two of whom have or had children who attended Zion Lutheran’s preschool.
“We are excited about the incorporation of marimbas in this mural not only because we are passionate about the instrument and its connection to Musser, but also because we value the philosophy of learning our children have experienced at the preschool,” Smith said. “Music is part of their curriculum and opens doors and creativity for young minds.”
The Rev. Kate Warn, pastor of Zion Lutheran Church, said adding a mural to the preschool’s site became a goal of hers after she saw the Manheim Made by Hand mural celebrating glassblowing that Horst Arts created in 2024.
“That mural celebrated the history and the strengths of the Manheim community in a wonderful and colorful way, and I thought Manheim would be enriched by
other public art projects,” she said. “I also began to wonder what might be possible for the Zion Lutheran Preschool building.”
The preschool has served children and families in Manheim since 1969. Warn views the mural as a celebration of the school’s legacy as well as the legacy of Musser, who grew up just down the street from Zion Lutheran Church, located at 2 S. Hazel St.
She’s especially excited about the mural bringing art right to the children, ages 2 to 5, who attend the preschool.
“When school is in session, students and their families will wait and walk past the mural each day as they prepare to enter the preschool building,” she said. “The mural is designed to be accessible to the kids, interactive and an encouragement to imagine that they can ‘reach for the stars.’ When the mural is completed, the preschool students will have opportunities in their classes and with their families to explore the images and to talk about what they see.”
Jason noted that when creating a mural, it’s important to consider the location and how the space will be used.
“While the mural will feature very large objects and themes, there will also be fun, smaller elements included at a preschooler’s eye level,” he said. “Plus, the two windows located in the middle of the wall will be integrated in a very fun way.”
Katherine described the vision for the mural as one that makes a visual impact but also connects to audiences of all ages.
A self-guided walking tour of Mount Gretna homes will take place on Saturday, Aug. 2, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The tour will offer an exclusive look inside homes ranging from weekend cottages to year-round homes. There will be eight homes on the tour, as well as two porches and three historic buildings. Featured on the tour this
year is a 1930s-inspired retreat lovingly restored by the owners. It features vintage appliances, framed linoleum remnants and a wraparound porch adorned with traditional Chinese lanterns.
Another highlight is a home that has been transformed into a spacious, light-filled retreat with a music library that includes

“It’s playful, it’s magical and it’s a joyful expression!” she said. “It’s a celebration of kids, nature and the legacy of music - reaching all the way to the sky and beyond. It’s supposed to grab your attention and make you smile.”
The Horsts hope work on the mural will begin by late summer or early fall, ideally in time for October’s Musser Marimba Festival. As work gets underway, they are excited about yet another collaboration with students who are part
of the National Art Honor Society at Manheim Central High School.
“These students will learn about the mural creation process and will gain valuable experience from assisting with the painting of the mural,” Jason said.
The timing of the mural’s creation will depend on funding, and organizers of the project are currently raising money for the work. To donate, visit www .zionmanheim.com and click on the “Online Giving” tab.

Tennis, everyone?
In addition to being a high-level, United State Tennis Association-sanctioned women’s tournament, the 18th Koser Jewelers Tennis Challenge offers all a chance to be involved during its weeklong run from Monday, Aug. 4, to Sunday, Aug. 10.
Admission is free to the tournament, and there is no ticketing for members of the general public. The USTA Pro Circuit event, with both singles and doubles competitions, will be held at the Hempfield recCenter, 1251 Stony Battery Road, Landisville. In addition to in-person viewing, matches will be livestreamed on the event’s website, https://hempfieldrec .com/landisville-pro-circuit/. The website also features information on the events surrounding the tournament and will include the brackets once the field has been finalized, said Wilson Pipkin, who is the Hempfield recCenter’s director of tennis and the event’s organizer. The Koser Inspiring Women Luncheon presented by Turbo Execs will be held Wednesday, Aug. 6, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Blue Collar Restaurant, Bar & Catering, 949 Church St., Landisville. There is a cost to attend, and people may register on the tournament website. From 11 to 11:30 a.m. there will be Meet, Mingle, and Mimosas. Lunch will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Attendees will be able to attend the day’s matches in the box seat area. The event will pay tribute to women from the area who have inspired others. People can pay for a chance to win items donated by local businesses and the tournament community partners. All proceeds will benefit Milagro House in Lancaster. “We recognize women in the community who are doing exceptional things, and we will tell their stories,” Pipkin said.
High School Night will be held at 7 p.m. on Aug. 6, featuring an Around the World Challenge. Teams will rotate through the court, racing to hit a ball from each spot before the next team. The winning team will receive a pizza party during the 2025-26 tennis season.
Friday, Aug. 8, will be Kids Day. The event is free for kids age 12 and under. From 10 to 11:30 a.m., games will be held before tournament play begins. Email Catherine Shaak at shaak@ms.usta.com for more information.
On Saturday, Aug. 9, the Hempfield recCenter will host its first Wheelchair Tennis Clinic and Match Play event, which is open to wheelchair athletes of all ages and skill levels. The first 25 people who register will receive a gift bag. Check-in on the day of the event will begin at 9:30 a.m. The clinic will be held from 10 a.m. to noon, and lunch and match play will take place from 1 to 3 p.m. There is a fee, which will include lunch. Go to the Koser Jewelers Tennis Challenge website to register. Email Melissa Landis at mlandis11@outlook.com if there are questions.
Another opportunity for community members to participate is by volunteering. The list of openings can be found on the tournament website and includes jobs like working a shift in the players’ lounge, running the scoreboard, being a court monitor or part of the ball crew, and serving as a VIP host.
“Sponsors and volunteers are what keeps the tournament free,” said Pipkin, who encourages interested volunteers to sign up early. “The key is to keep the event free, so we can promote tennis and promote a healthy sport.”
The plan is working. Last year, Hempfield recCenter won an award from the USTA for being the No. 1 facility in the country for adult programming, and it also features
numerous programs for youths.
The Koser Jewelers Tennis Challenge began in 2008 with a prize pool of $10,000, and that total has risen to $100,000, the maximum amount allowed for USTA circuit events. When Pipkin originally applied to host an event, the only opening on the schedule was in May. In 2013, there was a vacancy in the schedule in August, so Pipkin held two tournaments that year.
The August date is advantageous for many reasons. Most significantly, the tournament takes place a couple weeks prior to the U.S. Open and is played on hardcourts just like the annual Grand Slam event in Queens, which is a train ride away from Landisville. The surface and location help enable the Hempfield recCenter event to attract players ranked in the Top 100 of the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) rankings.
Some of the most well-known players to participate in the Koser Jewelers Tennis Challenge in the past did not win the event, including Jessica Pegula, who is currently ranked third in the world. In 2021, Emma Raducanu did not make the finals of the tournament but then went on an improbable run to capture the U.S. Open title a few weeks later.
Pipkin said he will receive the full list of entries on Tuesday, July 22. There are typically between 400 and 500 applicants, with the highest-ranked players qualifying for the draw. One player is known. Pipkin is permitted to choose one wild card
