hen Cavod hosts an open house and ribbon cutting for its Manheim location, executive director and founder Connie Dienner expects a reaction from the public. “I think the community will be very surprised and shocked when they see it all,” she said of the 6,000-square-foot addition to the performing arts facility. “One of our values is to do things with excellence, and that plays a lot into what we’ve done here. It’s very unique and creative and trendy.” The open house and ribbon cutting will be held on Saturday, Aug. 1, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Cavod’s Manheim location, 1223 Lancaster Road. Registration is not required to attend the event. “The ribbon cutting is the grand opening of our additional space next door,” Dienner said. “We’ve taken the wall out so it flows nicely between the two spaces, and we’ve added another big classroom and three private lessons rooms for Connie Dienner and her husband, Dave, invite people to an open house

The newest addition to Manheim’s Market Square isn’t meant to be admired from a distance. It’s meant to be played. A brightly decorated public piano is encouraging residents and visitors to strike a chord, share a song and experience the power of music to bring people together. The Manheim Area Chamber of Commerce placed a new Music for Everyone public piano in the heart of town, offering residents and visitors a unique opportunity to experience the joy of music in a shared, accessible space. The piano is part of the Music for Everyone initiative. The nonprofit’s “Keys for the City” program places

LCFMC Extravaganza Will Uncover Hidden Gems Everybody knows something about minerals and fossils. The upcoming show at the Farm and Home Center will provide the general public an opportunity to learn more about them and perhaps even pique their collective interest. “The best part of the show is that everyone can learn something new about fossils and minerals in a fun atmosphere,” said Christopher Haefner, the president of the L ancaster County Fossil and Mineral Club (LCFMC), the sponsor of the show. “Fossils and minerals are important because they teach us a lot about the Earth’s history, they give us resources for industrial use and economic prosperity, and they have an everlasting beauty that can be enjoyed by current and future generations.” The LCFMC’s annual Christmas in July Fossil and Mineral Extravaganza is coming up at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. This year’s edition of the educational vendor show will be conducted from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, July 25, and from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, July 26. There are modest cash fees associated with attending the show. “The atmosphere is upbeat and lively,” said Haefner. “The purpose of the show is to give members of the community the opportunity to see and purchase unique fossils, minerals, crystals and handmade jewelry and to emphasize a fun atmosphere where parents

Hope Inspire Love Turns Page to More Impactful Chapter

When you start a nonprofit, you’re focused on the work and not necessarily thinking in terms of future mergers. The founders of Hope Inspire Love kept their noses to the grindstone, and natural evolution produced organic growth. “My heart was always collaboration and participation,” said Amy Thurston, who, along with her husband, Steve, founded Hope Inspire Love nine years ago. “Did I think about a merger? No. We weren’t coming here to reinvent what someone else was doing. She’s Somebody’s Daughter was doing things other people weren’t doing. You’re taking the strengths of both organizations and putting them together.” Mo re t h a n s i m p l y a merger, Hope Inspire Love and S he ’s S omeb o dy ’s Daughter recently joined forces, pooled resources and intertwined missions all in the name of fighting human trafficking and sexual exploitation. Hope Inspire Love will serve as the lead organization, and the Lemoyne-based She’s Somebody’s Daughter will perform outreach services. “This was just a beautiful next step,” said Amy. “This allows us to better impact and really help survivors in our region. It’s a natural alignment in the right direction. It’s not a mission drift; it’s a mission realignment. We don’t ever want there to be barriers for Hope Inspire Love. This was an easy ‘yes.’ There was no pause or reservations.” The consolidation allows the two nonprofits to work as one and to provide better ser vices and reach more victims and potential victims of human trafficking in Lancaster, Dauphin, Franklin, L ebanon, York , B erk s , Cumberland, Adams, Perry, Montgomery and Lehigh counties. Operating under the tagline “Better Together, Stronger Together,” Hope Inspire Love, which is headquartered at 1380 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster, now also operates offices in Lemoyne and Chambersburg. We’re there for long-term support. “ We ’ve been working together for years,” added Amy. “(She’s Somebody’s Daughter was) looking at where they were going in the future. We were working with them like, ‘What do you need?’” U l t i m ate l y, i t w a s a conversation at a conference between Thurston a n d S h e ’s S o m e b o d y ’s Daughter officials that got the ball rolling toward a merger. Thurston took the idea to Hope Inspire Love’s board of directors in January of 2025, and by the fall of that year, the proper documentation was submitted to the

We have to be willing to consider what’s best for the people we serve. Neither organization was looking for this, but this came about. We didn’t force it. Devlin Receives Academic Honor Emma Devlin of Manheim graduated from University of Tampa, Tampa, Fla., on May 9. Devlin earned a Bachelor of Science in marketing. The Manheim facility opened in 2023. “Our goal is to represent the Lord in the arts and really glorify Him and also to create with purpose,” Dienner said. “We want to be a place for the community, to really bring people together. We’re a place where our kids are celebrated and they find their purpose and their identity. Everyone is welcome at Cavod. We celebrate our students and make sure ever yone is seen and valued.” Cavod features classes for people age 3 through adult and hosts more than 150 classes a week between its two locations. host a National Night Out event on Tuesday, Aug. 4, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at the Manheim Farm Show Complex, 502 E. Adele Ave. The event celebrates police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie. National Night Out will feature a bounce house, an obstacle course, the Piper Belle’s BBQ and Twisted Sisters Ice Cream food trucks, and a snack and coffee stand run by Hope Served. First responders will be on hand and will display their equipment. There are competitive sports, participatory sports and spectator sports. For the most part, polo is a spectator sport. Nowhere do they view polo like they do in Lititz. “ You’re disconnected from technolog y,” said Elizabeth Beck, the president of the Lancaster Polo Club’s six-member board of directors. “You can really unplug and reset. It’s very much a respite, but there’s also some excitement. It’s a really great blend of what you imagine of polo. It’s camaraderie, and you’re enjoying the day, the time and the people who you’re with.” A Sunday afternoon in the summer with the Lancaster Polo Club is more of an outing or social gathering than it is a sporting event. The show was established in 2014 at Trinity Reformed United Church of Christ in Mountville, before moving to the Solanco Fairgrounds. The extravaganza has been staged at its current location since 2021. LCFMC also hosts an annual one-day show at Trinity Reformed United Church of Christ, 450 W. Main St., Mountville, in the fall - this year on Saturday, Nov. 7. The nonprofit organization is also planning a fossil safari event later this year. “Members of LCFMC enjoy sharing their collective knowledge of fossils and minerals with others to pass on their knowledge and enthusiasm to current and future generations,” said Hae fner. “LCFMC shares this interest through

But there’s just as much going on off the massive grassy playing field as there is on it. “ The vast majority of the members of our club are spectators,” said Beck. “ We have made a more concerted effort to tr y to bring people into the sport. Sometimes it can feel unattainable because it’s so niche. There’s a lot of education. It’s a complicated sport. We’re trying to bridge that gap.” The Lancaster Polo Club hosts home matches on every summer Sunday in Rothsville, at the tree-lined Forney Field, 70 Church St., Lititz. The two-hour matches begin at 2:30 p.m., but gates open at 1 p.m., allowing plenty of time for pregame festivities like tailgating, socializing and food trucks. The Lancaster Polo Club’s
16- to 18-match season began on June 14 and will run through the end of September. The matches, which are made up of four or six 7.5-minute periods or ‘chuckers,’ feature competitors in male, female, children, beginner and advanced categories, as well as some combination of all of those. The matches, some of which are sponsored by local businesses and community members, are open to the public, and there are fees associated with admission. wonderful community. You really can only experience it by being there.” Once known as “ the Sport of Kings,” polo is played by two teams of four players, each on horseback. Each side uses teamwork, strategy, riding skills and a long mallet to advance the ball down the field and ultimately through the other team’s goal posts. “You kind of don’t know until you do know,” said Beck, who was introduced to polo by her parents more than 30 years ago. “It’s kind of one of Lancaster County’s best-kept secrets. It’s the oldest team sport in the world. It’s a fascinating sport. It’s an intense sport. It’s a Sunday afternoon tradition. Promise Players Post Auditions The Promise Players will hold auditions for the group’s fall play, “See You in Bells,” on Sunday, Aug. 23. Auditions will be held between 1 and 6 p.m. at Lampeter Church of the Brethren, 1900 Lampeter Road, Lancaster. The play will be performed from Thursday to Sunday, Nov. 5 to 8, and Thursday to Sunday, Nov. 12 to 15. “See You in Bells” is a comedy centered on a wedding that faces numerous obstacles, including three generations of weddings with inexplicable disasters, a church building that is falling down, half the wedding party missing, and the bride’s sisters still fighting over what happened at the last wedding. But the bride’s brother is determined to end the sisters’ feud and the family curse. Roles are available for 16 actors: six males, six females, two teen girls, one teen boy, and a good-natured minister. Those auditioning should come prepared to read from the script, and they may arrive early to complete the audition form and look over the script selections. Sometimes players will go to other clubs and play. It’s kind of like, ‘Who’s available?’ Each player is assigned a handicap, and teams are structured by those handicaps. Polo is a migratory sport. It’s played in the winter down south. The Manheim installation helps to celebrate the organization’s 20th anniversary and reflects a continued commitment to fostering cultural enrichment and strengthening community bonds through the power of music. “Music has a remarkable ability to bring people together across generations and backgrounds,” said Krista Cassidy, president of the Manheim Area Chamber of Commerce. “By introducing this piano into our community, we hope to inspire spontaneous moments of creativity, spark meaningful connections and enhance the welcoming spirit of Manheim.” H o r s t A r t s C e n t e r, located on Main Street in Manheim, played an i n te g ra l ro l e i n b o t h designing the piano and coordinating its placement. “When designing this piano, we wanted to celebrate music in a fun way,” said Jason Horst. “Since the piano would live outside, we decided to go with a whimsical garden-inspired theme.” Decoration on the piano includes playful woodland animals; floral artwork; and scenic details that celebrate music, creativity and community. Lasercut wooden overlays were added to create a stainedglass-inspired effect, and gold leaf accents add to the design. The piano also highlights the Manheim C h a m b e r ’s “ M a d e b y Hand” initiative, with a laser-cut version of the slogan on the instrument.
“We’re excited to share an opportunity to highlight what makes Manheim truly special,” said Kristie Schmid, executive director of the Manheim Area Chamber of Commerce, describing the Chamber’s initiative. “As part of our new rebranding campaign, ‘Made by Hand,’ we are celebrating the rich tradition of craftsmanship that has defined Manheim for generations. From skilled trades and local makers to businesses built on care, precision and pride, this campaign is all about honoring the hands and stories behind our community.” The piano makes a perfect addition to the campaign, she said, noting that not only was it designed by local artists, but it also welcomes anyone from the community to enjoy it. “ The public piano, located by the gazebo i n M a r k e t S q u a re , i s available for anyone to play - whether a seasoned musici an or some one simply looking to share a tune,” Schmid said. “Community members are encouraged to stop by, enjoy performances and even contribute their own musical expressions.” As Music for Everyone enters its third decade, the organization hopes to expand its piano footprint into more areas of Lancaster County. “We are grateful to the Manheim Chamber for sponsoring a piano this season and are totally blown away by the work of Horst Arts Center,” said James Fortin, Music for Ever yone development manager. “We hope Manheim enjoys this initiative for years to come and that other towns will join them.”

Storytelling Night Planned
Mennonite Life will host its annual Storytelling Night on Monday, Aug. 3, at 7 p.m. at Forest Hills Mennonite Church, 100 Quarry Road, Leola. Felixa Valladares de Kunkle and Conrad Kanagy will relate short-form anecdotes drawn from their lives and experiences. Kunkle began serving with LMC: A Fellowship of Anabaptist Churches in March 2019 and currently serves as office coordinator, prayer facilitator, and Hispanic ministry support. Originally from Honduras, she is fluent in Spanish, English, and German and uses her language skills to help build connections and foster communication across cultures within the LMC community. She is passionate about encouraging prayer, supporting leaders, and helping people feel welcomed, valued, and included. Kanagy is a professor emeritus of sociology at Elizabethtown College. He directed studies of Mennonite Church USA and a study of Anabaptists in 10 countries, and he was a longtime pastor at Elizabethtown Mennonite Church. He also serves as publisher and executive editor of Santos Books. Conrad and his wife, Heidi, have been married for 37 years. They have an adult son and attend Harrisburg Brethren in Christ Church. T he event is free of charge, and donations will be received for the speakers as well as Mennonite Life’s ongoing storytelling and conser vation efforts. A recording of the event will be available on Mennonite Life’s YouTube channel following the event.
