Manheim Central

Barons Spike the Past, Win State Title

When the members of Manheim Central’s boys’ volleyball team stepped onto the court for the state championship in University Park on June 14, they were staring down a familiar foe - Meadville, the same team that dashed their title hopes just a year ago. This time, though, the Barons were back with a score to settle. Fueled by redemption and relentless determination, they flipped the script, defeating Meadville 3-1 (21-25, 25-23, 25-15, 27-25) and capturing the first PIAA title in program history.

“It was a real heartbreaker to go out the way we did last year,”

said coach Craig Dietrich, who recalled his team’s 27-25 loss in the fourth set against Meadville. “We knew we were on a collision course to play them again this year in the finals, and we were ready.”

Meadville took an early lead in the championship match, winning the first set, but the Barons came back strong to take the next three.

“We felt pretty confident coming into the game,” Dietrich said. “We knew if we played the way we are capable of playing, there was a strong chance we’d win the match.” When his team was down a significant number of points, however, Dietrich knew he had to rally the troops.

During a timeout, he reminded the Barons of their greatest strength.

“We weren’t serving very aggressively, and I knew we needed to do that,” Dietrich remarked. “The team responded, and that benefited us.”

The team’s win puts the players in rare air. It’s the first time Manheim Central volleyball has won the state championship, and it makes the team only the third Barons sports team to win any state competition in the district’s

Jaxon McCauley is a straight shooter - literally. And now the 12-year-old Manheim Central Middle School student has the medals to prove it.

Jaxon competed at the 2025 Palmyra Spring Open & Henry Arms Pennsylvania Junior Grand Championship in May, where he earned two gold medals and three bronze medals for his performance over the two-day event.

He placed first in the USA Shooting Pennsylvania J3 category (15 & Under - Men) and the SCTP Pennsylvania Intermediate Category. Jaxon’s third-place finishes were in the Henry Junior Grand Championship Final, USA Shooting Pennsylvania Overall and Open Category. Earlier this month, he traveled to Hillsdale, Mich., for the USA Shooting Shotgun Junior Olympic Championship for International Trap.

At Elizabethtown College, students in the Public Heritage Studies Program have the opportunity to explore and preserve the rich local history of Lancaster County and beyond, while gaining hands-on experience that will prepare them for careers in museums, archives and history preservation.

While the program is open to college students, its benefits to the community extend well

“Winning the medals felt great,” said Jaxon, who is the son of Tyler and Shauna McCauley of Manheim. “I’ve

beyond the campus.

The roots of the Public Heritage Studies Program run deep. Director Jean-Paul Benowitz, who has taught history at Elizabethtown for 33 years, began developing local history courses after publishing books on the history of the college and the borough in 2014 and 2015. What began as a certificate program has grown into a fullfledged minor, supported by the Young Center for Anabaptist and Pietist Studies, which highlights

the regional heritage of the Amish, Mennonites and Church of the Brethren.

Central Pennsylvania is the perfect spot for the program, Benowitz said. Lancaster and York played pivotal roles in early American history, serving as temporary capitals and the birthplace of the Articles of Confederation. The region was also home to Thaddeus Stevens, a key figure behind the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments.

“It is not an exaggeration to say the heritage of this area was important in the establishment of American democracy,” Benowitz remarked. “And the future of American democracy relies on our understanding of our local heritage, building on this important legacy.”

As Benowitz explained, students who want to earn a minor choose from a concentration in either applied history or historic preservation. “Courses are open to all students of all years/cohorts and all academic majors,” he stated. “The classes are interdisciplinary; students from a wide variety of majors take these courses and complete the minor.”

Student projects through the program have included researching and reporting about every building on the Elizabethtown College campus to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the college’s

founding. Beyond the campus, students have worked in neighboring communities to preserve the past.

“In the fall and spring semesters, all Public Heritage Studies courses have a community-based learning component requiring students to conduct field work and research in the local community,” Benowitz said. “These projects are also conducted during the summer through a program at the college called Summer Creative Arts and Research program (SCARP).”

Each spring semester since 2019, students research a report about a historically significant property in the National Historic District of Marietta, where the student explains the architectural style of the property, the history of the property and biographical information about all the people who lived in the property and contributed to local history, Benowitz said.

“Every fall semester, students choose a local historic site or museum and conduct research about an artifact in the collection’s archives, producing print and electronic versions of a brochure explaining the significance of the artifacts to the collection’s history and enticing researchers to visit the local historic site or museum,” he stated.

This coming fall semester, students will conduct genealogical research about their family history and film a presentation to show family members to reveal inter -

esting facts about their heritage based on the PBS show “Finding Your Roots.”

Students have also created online maps that are used by genealogists and historians conducting research.

The college program helps students discover more about local history while also providing opportunities to share their findings on a larger scale.

“Several honors students have made their Public Heritage Studies projects into their senior thesis,” Benowitz remarked. “They have presented at local and national conferences. These thesis projects have contributed to their being accepted into competitive Public Heritage Studies graduate programs and careers in the field of public history and historic preservation.”

Along with exploring the electronic maps students have created, Benowitz encourages people to support historical research by getting involved with the Historic Preservation Trust of Lancaster County, Marietta Restoration Asso -

ciates or the Historic Harrisburg Association.

“Donate historically significant books, letters, documents, photographs, artifacts to various local historical societies, record or write down memories of local history and donate to the library/archival collections at various local historical societies,” he said.

Benowitz also encourages people to sign up to participate in City As Text - Places As Text, an all-day program he will lead that will be held on Saturday, Aug. 9, beginning at 8:30 a.m. at the Pennsylvania Chautauqua Hall of Philosophy, 212 Gettysburg Ave., Mount Gretna.

“City As Text is an active experiential learning approach to exploring local history and culture,” Benowitz said. Small groups will explore, observe and reflect through the event. To learn more, visit https://mtgretnahistory.org/ events.

Mitch McVicker To Perform Benefit Concert

Dove Award-winning songwriter Mitch McVicker will perform a concert in central Pennsylvania to benefit the work of Hope Served. Hope Served is a Manheim-based

charity focused on providing job training, paid employment and meaningful relationships for individuals with disabilities. The concert will be held on Saturday,

June 28, at 6:30 p.m. at Harrisburg Brethren in Christ Church, 2217 Derry St., Harrisburg.

McVicker’s vocational musical journey began by working with the late Rich Mullins. They performed concerts and wrote songs together. The two were roommates, serving in ministry together among Navajo school children.

Shortly after a car wreck killed Mullins and badly injured McVicker, a song the two penned together, “My Deliverer,” was given the GMA Dove Award for Song of the Year, all while McVicker was going through a lengthy and difficult process of recovering from a coma-causing brain injury, collapsed lungs, broken bones and nerve damage. After his recovery, McVicker continued his musical career, influenced by Mullins in music yet with his own distinct voice and style.

McVicker’s solo career has spanned nearly 2,500 concerts in 49 states and 13 countries. Along with recording 13 full-length albums, he has made 2 EPs and

bond,” he said. “We have a group of six seniors who are phenomenal leaders. We rely on them when things get tough. They always had a certain confidence; it’s a calming confidence. They knew they were going to take control on the court because of the experience that group had. When you’ve been through tough times, it gives you the experience you need to fight harder to win.”

Seniors Landon Mattiace, Reagan Miller, Dylan Musser and Colin Rohrer accepted the trophy on the team’s behalf. Other players who received medals at the state championship are Cole Arter, Daniel Becker, Ryder Buckwalter, Wyatt Buckwalter, Bryan Fahnestock, Caleb Groff, Jay Hollinger, Gavin Lonecker, Weston Longenecker, Will Myers, Blake Neiles and Asher Ulrich.

Looking ahead to next season, Dietrich acknowledged it will be hard to see his seniors leave.

“We are graduating probably one of the best teams we’ve ever had,” he said. “But we’ve got some great kids at the JV level ready to step up and

fill in those roles.”

In the meantime, he and the team are focused on enjoying their moment of success and ending their season on top.

They celebrated as a team after their win at the championship, but they are also planning a more in-depth celebration in the future.

Two of the kids on the team left right after the game for a mission trip, so Dietrich is planning to commemorate the win once the team members’ schedules allow.

Returning home to Manheim, the team enjoyed a police and fire company escort and was greeted by several hundred fans who showed their support as the team arrived at the high school.

“We’re just really proud of how the community came out and supported us during the season, the postseason and at the state championship,” Dietrich said, noting that the crowd cheering on the Barons was larger than the Meadville crowd. “It was an honor to represent our community by playing this sport and having the town embrace this team, too.”

Sharp Shooter

been shooting this game for three years and have put in a lot of work to achieve my goals. Winning the medals at Palmyra shows me that the work is paying off.”

As he competed, Jaxon focused on the present moment, with songs he heard on the radio during the drive to the range playing through his head.

“One important aspect of this game is to not think about what happened during your last shot or what your overall score is,” said his mother. “A clear mind is important for consistency and success, so hearing a song during the competition while you’re shooting can be a good thing.”

Jaxon’s sport, known as Olympic Trap, Bunker Trap or International Trap, uses a shotgun to hit clay targets that come out of a trap house at different heights and angles. It’s one of the shooting sports featured in the Summer Olympics, Jaxon said, noting that many competitors refer to the sport simply as “Bunker.”

“A round of Bunker is 25 targets shot at from five different stations or shooting spots, and each station can present either a left target, middle/straight target or a right target,” he said. “In a round, you will receive two left targets, two right targets and one middle target at each station, but you do not know what target will be thrown when it’s your turn to shoot.”

Targets may be thrown up to a 45-degree angle left or right, with a maximum height of just under 10 feet. Targets come out of the trap machines between 65 and 70 miles per hour, and a shooter has two shots to break a target.

“You are scored on the number of targets you hit in each round,” Jaxon explained. “A competition will total up your round scores into

an overall score to determine place. The top six shooters will shoot a finals round, with the highest three scorers taking gold, silver and bronze.”

Jaxon credits staying calm even when he missed as the secret to his success and noted that he had to compete in a shoot-off in the Palmyra finals.

“I was up against two other shooters - both very good shooters - for third bib,” he said, referring to what bib numbers competitors have in the finals. “It took around 15 shots for us to determine who earned third badge - me.”

He remembers one part of the competition in vivid detail: hitting his first 20 out of 25 in a competition round.

“This is a goal I have been working towards for a long time,” he said.

Jaxon noted that he got into the sport sort of by accident.

“My dad and I were waiting to go shoot sporting clays for fun after my archery class at Palmyra,” he shared, explaining that he shoots at the Palmyra Bunker at Palmyra Sportmen’s Association. “We were waiting in the parking lot and saw a couple of guys shooting what we later learned was Bunker. I asked my dad if we could skip sporting clays and try that game instead.

From there it’s been Bunker all the way, which naturally led into competitions.”

He credits his coaches, John Thompson and Dave Bechtold, with helping him reach his potential, along with support from other shooters and his parents.

He said while he loves the sport, he enjoys the community of people he’s met even more.

“It’s a tough game, and it’s nice to have a good community of people around you who all understand the sport and the challenges it presents,” he said.

When he’s not at the range, Jaxon enjoys hanging out with his friends and playing baseball and football. He encourages other kids to try shooting sports.

“Stay calm and stick with it,” he advised. “Be open to advice from others, but also trust yourself.”

The Palmyra Sportsmen’s Association is located at 410 Sportsman Road, Annville. Open practice is held year-round on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and anyone who is interested is invited to come out and try the sport.
