Softball league marks 50 years
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
The Manheim Church Softball League will celebrate its 50th year of slow-pitch softball on Saturday, June 24, with fun for the whole family. The celebration will take place at the league’s main field, the pool field located adjacent to Manheim Central High School, 400 E. Adele Ave.
“We’re calling this All-Star Saturday,” said Mike Givler, president of the league. “We’ll have two all-star games as well as a home run derby and a reunion game.”
The reunion game will kick off the festivities at 2 p.m. “This is open to alumni of the league, and it’s basically an old-timer’s game,” Givler said. “It’s an opportunity for players who no longer play to relive their glory days.” The first all-star game will be held at 3:30 p.m., followed by the 5 p.m. home run derby for church league players. The second all-star game will begin at 6:30 p.m. “Each team is picking three all-stars from their team for the games,” Givler explained.
After graduation, she plans to attend HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College. At the ceremony, Lauren welcomed the members of the Class of 2023 and their friends and family.
Julianna, the daughter of Brandon and Samantha Steach of Manheim, spoke about the beauty in uncertain futures.
“I’ve talked to so many friends about how we feel this great pressureto know what we are doing with our
lives at just 17 or 18 years old,” she said, “but the truth is, we have no clue. It’s scary, but it also offers an amazing opportunity to explore our passions and make mistakes along the way.” She was president of the Spanish Club and co-president of the Speech and Debate Club and also served as secretary of both the National Honor Society (NHS) and the National Spanish Honor Society. She plans to attend the
University of Pittsburgh to study environmental engineering.
Laura is the daughter of Timothy and Stephanie King of Manheim. Her speech focused on everything the Class of 2023 has gone through. “That has made us stronger as a collective,” she stated. “Our experience of overcoming hardships all throughout our schooling has prepared us for the ever-changing world beyond.” After graduation, she plans to study biomedical engineering at the University of Kentucky. Her high school activities included running for the cross-country team, serving

Along with the games, a variety of food trucks will be on-site, with food available for purchase by donation. The expenses for the food trucks are being covered by an anonymous donor, Givler said, and all donations will benefit the Home on Ferdinand and Teen Central in Manheim.
There are currently 17 teams in the league, from churches in towns throughout the county, including Manheim, Elizabethtown, East Petersburg and Bird-in-Hand. Although the league is celebrating its 50th anniversary of slow-pitch, it actually began 70 years ago as a fast-pitch league, Givler said, adding, “I believe we are one of the longest continually running softball leagues in the state.”

Over the years, the league has produced a few famous alumni, including Chris Heisey, who played Major League Baseball for the Cincinnati Reds, Los Angeles Dodgers and Washington Nationals from 2010 to 2017.
Givler, who typically plays an infield position, also serves as a league umpire and has been a member of the league since 1985. “I like to compete, but I also like the fellowship and camaraderie of the players and churches,” he said. He also credits the league’s longevity to the support of a group of volunteers. “This league doesn’t happen year after year without lots of people helping,” he stated. “From making schedules, to the umpires, to having the teams ready to go night after night, there are just so many great people in this league.”
All-Star Saturday is an opportunity to not only focus on the league and its history, but also honor the game and give back to the community,
Golden Eagle Hike planned
A Golden Eagle Hike will take place at Governor Dick Park, 3283 Pinch Road, Mount Gretna, on Sunday, June 25, at 1:30 p.m. The activity will be a slowerpaced 2- to 3-mile hike. Attendees should meet at the Environmental Center and bring water.
The program is free. Preregistration is required by contacting 717-964-3808 or governordick@hotmail.com and providing a name and phone number in case the program is canceled.
Givler said. “It’s going to be a great community event, with good food and fun,” he stated. “You’re going to see some really talented softball players, and you’ll be able to see some players from yesteryear try to shake off the rust and come out and play.”

During the months of June and July, the Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA) wildlife staff will provide free guided tours showcasing the rare regal fritillary butterflies at Fort Indiantown Gap (FTIG), near Annville.
Reservations are required and attendance is limited. All attendees, including children, must register at www.ftig.isportsman.net/ ButterflyTours.aspx and obtain a free permit. To attend a tour, participants must present a permit for that specific date and time slot.
Guided tours will be offered, rain or shine, on Friday, June 30; Saturday, July 1; Friday, July 7; and Saturday, July 8. No rain dates will be provided.
Attendees will be required to travel from the meeting location to the tour location in their personal vehicles. Tours will last approximately one hour plus driving time. Meeting location and parking information will be provided after obtaining a permit.
Visitors of all ages and abilities are welcome to attend. Tours will be on foot on gravel roads and mowed paths. Attendees should bring drinking water and wear appropriate clothing and footwear for uneven terrain. Wandering off the path, into the fields, or away from the tour guide is prohibited. There will be little or no shade on the tour route.
Like many military installations, FTIG is home to a diverse population of plants and animals, many of which
are rare and considered species of conservation concern. It is home to 49 species of mammals, 143 species of breeding birds, 37 species of reptiles and amphibians, 35 species of fish, more than 800 species of plants and many notable species of invertebrates, including 86 species of butterflies and more than 500 species of moths.
These species persist at FTIG because it provides an assortment of high-quality habitats. These habitats include rare early successional ecosystems such as grasslands, thickets, shrub lands and young forests, which were created and maintained from disturbances caused by military training, fires and conservation efforts. The installation is home to 1,000 acres of scrub oak and pitch pine barrens and approximately 2,200 acres of native grassland habitat.
FTIG, which serves as headquarters to the DMVA and the Pennsylvania National Guard (PNG), is a live-fire, maneuver military training facility in Pennsylvania. The 17,000-acre installation balances one of the region’s most ecologically diverse areas with a military mission that annually supports nearly 18,000 PNG personnel and more than 113,000 additional personnel from other branches of service, multinational partners and interagency partners at the federal, state and local levels.
For general inquiries about the tours, email RA-DMVA -Wildlife@pa.gov or call 717861-3299.

The Lancaster County Planning Commission (LCPC) held its third annual Leadership Awards Celebration on May 9. Individuals and projects from around Lancaster County were awarded for their understanding and support for good planning, the planning process and places2040, the Lancaster County Comprehensive Plan.
The Lifetime Achievement
Award was presented to Mary Wickenheiser from Columbia Borough. Wickenheiser has provided Columbia Borough with distinguished and committed service for 23 years. She has served on borough council, the planning commission, Columbia River Park Committee, Lancaster County Solid Waste Authority Citizens Advisory Committee, the Safe Harbor Citizens Advisory Committee and the Northwest Lancaster County River Trail Committee.
The Distinguished Service Award was presented to Ray Marvin of Bart Township. Marvin has demonstrated effective leadership and a commitment to consensus building during the creation and adoption of the Southern Lancaster County Comprehensive Plan, which was adopted by nine of the 12 municipalities in the Southern End. Marvin has served as a supervisor for more than 15 years and has held the role of chairman. He became the Bart Township representative on the Southern Lancaster County Inter-Municipal Council and is the vice chairman. Martin also represents the Southern Region on the LCPC.
The LCPC partnered with the Lancaster County Coalition for Smart Growth to present student project awards. The coalition put up the prize money for the awards.
A Leadership Award was presented to fifth-graders at Ephrata Intermediate School for their program Ephrata Eats. Students conducted a survey to identify preferences
for a coffee, tea, smoothie or cupcake. Students developed their menu item and created a commercial pitch and video for the new menu item. Selected entries were featured on local restaurants’ menus for a set amount of time.
A Leadership Award was presented for the project “A Long Walk to Water,” created by 92 third-graders at Clay Elementary School. Students at the school engaged in a unit on the importance of water and the global water crisis. Students developed a simulation of the effort and challenges of those needing water across the globe. A collection of $1,300 was donated to Water for South Sudan, and 72 gallons of water were donated to Ephrata Area Social Services.
A Leadership Award was presented to Lancaster Clean Water Partners for its Clean Water Projects in Pequea Creek Watershed. Implementation of the transportation plan will assist the borough in improving its nonmotorized transportation network by developing a system of nonmotorized transportation connections and contributing to a more equitable transportation network for people of all income levels, ages and abilities.

Trail application available for
Apple devices
The Susquehanna National Heritage Area (SNHA) has announced that the Susquehanna NHA app is now available on the App Store for IOS users. Created through a partnership with Franklin & Marshall College computer science course students in 2021, the app was first made available through Google Play under the name Susquehanna NHA Trails.
The app is part of SNHA’s ongoing mission to connect visitors to the outdoor recreation amenities along the Susquehanna River. In the app, trail access areas, parking information, restroom facilities, and heritage sites are listed individually for major regional trails and nature preserves. The app also allows
Susquehanna NHA to send notifications about trail updates or construction. Users can also check to see if the James D. Warner Passageway under the Shock’s Mill Bridge on the Northwest Lancaster County River Trail is flooded. This waterfront passageway floods during spring freshets and on occasion in the summer. There is no available trail detour, so it is helpful for users to check before hitting the trail.
The application has event and contact information for Susquehanna NHA to better connect its community to riverfront initiatives. Another feature of the app allows users to submit trail maintenance requests. Trail users can submit the trail name, the mile
marker, and a photo of the issue. This interactive component is designed to help trail managers keep local trails clear and accessible.
For links directly to the apps on the App Store and Google Play, visit www.susqnha.org and click Maps & Guides.
The SNHA connects the people and communities of Lancaster and York counties to one another and to the nation through stories about the area. The organization aims to welcome visitors, cultivate partnerships, and nurture a strong regional identity.
For more details, contact Megan Salvatore, Columbia Crossing visitor service representative, at msalvatore @susqnha.org or 717449-5607.

DAR members attend state conference
The Pennsylvania State Society Daughters of the American Revolution (PSSDAR) met from April 27 to 29 for its 126th annual State Conference at the Lancaster Wyndham Resort and Conference Center. Pennsylvania state regent Marguerite Fritsch of Landisville presided over the conference. Her state theme is “Love of Service to God, Home, and Country.” Her state project is the restoration and preservation of Old Swedes Cemetery, Chester, where John Morton, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, is buried.
Several members of Lancaster’s Donegal-Witness Tree DAR were on hand for the conference. In attendance were Suzanne Whallon, regent; Mary “Sue” McClure, past regent; M. Ann Grove, director; Rebecca Rinehard, recording secretary; Cheryl Weaver, historian; Ann Carter, registrar and parliamentarian; Carol Elfner, chaplain; Nancy LeFevre, corresponding secretary; Elizabeth Miller; and new members Donna Statkus, Kathryn Raffensperger, and Barbara Searles.
The conference kicked off with a welcome dinner on April 27. Then members gathered to hear author Laurance Cook, a nationally recognized presidential historian, talk about his book, “Symbols of Patriotism: First Ladies and Daughters of the American Revolution.” After this, junior members hosted an “April Madness” party for
which attendees were encouraged to wear attire from their favorite sports teams. Next, attendees participated in a trivia challenge.
Kathleen Zinskie, PSSDAR state chair of national defense, organized the April 28 veterans’ luncheon supporting the work of the United Service Organizations (USO), which aims to provide comfort care and a feeling of “home away from home” for the U.S. armed forces. Attendees were asked to bring lunch boxes for children of military families and to participate in “Rucksacks to Backpacks,” a program that helps veterans by providing essential school supplies to their children. Speakers included Jenna Price, USO Central Pennsylvania Center operations and programs manager, and Capt. Kristopher Reed, assistant professor of military service with
Blue Mountain Battalion ROTC. In addition, a “Missing Man Table” reminded attendees of fallen, missing, or imprisoned U.S. military service members. Immediately after the luncheon, the backpacks and lunch boxes were collected by representatives of the military so they could be distributed to the appropriate families.
Lancaster Donegal-Witness
Tree Chapter hosted a “Spring Into Historic Lancaster” themed dinner on April 28.
The conference also included business sessions, educational workshops, a luncheon organized by the Children of the American Revolution (CAR), and a Celebration of Life service at St. John’s United Methodist Church in Paradise.
Awards were presented, as well. Among the winners was Carolyn Bausinger of the Donegal-Witness Tree Chapter, who
was the runner-up for Volunteer Information Specialist of the Year.
The 2023 conference chair was Barbara Bechtel Cross, and the general chair of the conference was Susan Gillette Meer. Guests included Rebecca Kline, state regent of Kansas; Carolyn Nutt, state regent of Massachusetts; Laurie Nesbitt, state regent of Virginia; and Lynne Stallcop, national chair, conservation, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR).
The NSDAR is a women’s service organization whose members can trace their lineage to an individual who contributed to securing American independence during the Revolutionary War. DAR take part in volunteer service and projects to promote historic preservation, education, and patriotism. To learn more, visit www.dar.org.
