In her address to her classmates, Manheim Central Class of 2025 valedictorian Hannah Brubaker acknowledged the challenges she and her peers have faced in the past and encouraged her fellow students to embrace the changes the future will bring.
“Many of us would admit that this year in particular has been both hard and deeply joyful for many reasons,” she told the audience at the ceremony, held on May 30 at LCBC Church in Manheim. “It’s been a year of letting go of the people who we’ve loved so dearly for our entire lives, while also beginning to embrace what is to come.”
While graduating high school is an emotional experience, she said, it’s also an opportunity to experience new things.
“I think there is beauty in the
idea that what looks like the end of an era in our lives is often the beginning of something even more wonderful,” she said. “Let us focus not on what we regret or what we’ll mourn leaving behind, but instead on the wonderful things that God has planned for our futures. As we reflect back on what we’ll miss dearly and look forward to what we’re excited for in the future, I hope we can embrace the beauty of change.” Hannah will attend Liberty University, where she plans to major in accounting and data analysis, with a minor in German.
Class president Tristan Wood welcomed the Class of 2025 to the ceremony. Kyria Martin was named salutatorian. She will attend Millersville University and plans to pursue a career in botany. Principal Joshua Weit zel presented scholarships and academic awards to the Class of 2025, and Manheim Central
alumna Aimee Tucci Ketchum, Class of 1990, addressed the students.
Reagan Wiese also spoke at the ceremony. “Being a teenager in 2025 is not easy,” she told her classmates. “We have so much pressure from … everything. We’re expected to be so much, to know so much, but inevitably, we can only do so much. We all have limits to what we can do, and we need to learn that it’s OK.”
She encouraged her classmates to allow themselves some grace. “We need to realize that our worth is not based on our intelligence or a single concept,” she said. “Our worth is based on our drive and eagerness for exploration and connection. Life

In June of 2000, members of the Hempfield United Methodist Church Youth Choir took a trip to Naked Creek Overlook on Skyline Drive in Virginia. Now, 25 years later, one of the participants has created a musical production inspired by a true story from the trip, and she’s enlisted one of the youngest travelers from the group to play her character in the show.
“Audience of One” will be
performed at 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, June 27 and 28, and at 3 p.m. on Sunday, June 29, at The Junction Center, 1875 Junction Road, Manheim. With the book, music and lyrics by Alisa Bair, the show reflects a pivotal moment in the group’s journey.
“A church youth choir opts out of its summer choir tour in favor of a concert, just for God, on a mountaintop,” Bair said, describing the musical’s plot. “While convinced that their trip

LaTrobe Barnitz may have only been the executive director of the Manheim Community Library for a little over a month, but he knows one thing for sure: He will never get tired of looking out the windows of the library’s new location at 547 N. Penryn Road, Manheim.
“My favorite part of the library is the view back here,” he said, referring to the windows that run the length of the children’s area
in the back of the library space and overlook acres of farmland.
“It looks like a postcard.”
Manheim Community Library moved into its new space, which is part of the Kreider Farms Cultural Center on the Pleasant View Communities campus, in late April.
The library had outgrown its space in downtown Manheim, Barnitz said, and the building that houses the borough offices was also not ideal for a community space.

We encourage local nonprofit groups, schools, churches, and others to submit news releases. Dated articles, highlighting local activities and events, and undated articles of general interest are used as space allows. Related photographs of good quality, with complete identification, are encouraged.
“We moved out of the old building because it was becoming untenable to be there,” Barnitz said, noting that the building had some significant sewer line issues and was not especially ADA-friendly, with the library located on the third floor of an old building.
The new location is a perfect fit in many ways, he said.
“We have plenty of parking here. You don’t have to cross a busy street to get to the library, like you used to have to do,” he shared. “We are a mile further out of town, but the location here is great.”
As Barnitz explained, the library rents the space from Pleasant View Communities, which is developing other parts of the building into an events center and more, complete with an outdoor patio that the library can use for programming.
“There’s a walking path that goes around the library, and it goes around Pleasant View as well,” Barnitz said of the rural location. “We have a great relationship with Pleasant View, and they have been a big supporter. Their residents have been some of the first patrons here.”
Located all on one level on the ground floor, the new library features book drops both inside and outside, making it easy to return books after hours.
Computers provide opportunities for self-checkout or can be used by members of the community for internet access and printing. New desks also provide space for people to set up and plug in their own laptops as well. A small conference room and a study room may be reserved for groups or individuals to use.
Like the old location, the new
library features newspapers and magazines, adult fiction and nonfiction, a young adult collection, a large-print selection and a bookstore on-site, with sale proceeds benefiting the library.
“These are the cream-of-thecrop books,” Barnitz said of the bookstore inventory. “These are the new ones and ones that are in really great condition. We also sell puzzles and games.”
A large children’s area features movable bins of books which can be rolled out of the way for story time and other programming in “Nana’s Nook,” a window seat overlooking the farmland.
Esther Martin, youth services coordinator for the library, noted that the Summer Reading Program kicked off on June 7, with a theme of “Color Our World.”
“We have an adult Summer Reading Program this year,” she said. “Summer Reading is for all
ages, and there are prizes for all ages.”
To participate in the Summer Reading Program, people may stop by the circulation desk to pick up a reading log.
Martin is excited to offer expanded programming in the new library space.
“We’ll be able to do outdoor programming this year,” she said. “We couldn’t do that before because we didn’t have any outdoor space.”
Barnitz encourages people to come check out the library’s new home and explore the large, open space that features lots of natural light.
“It’s just a great community space,” he said. “It reminds people that the library is not just a storage area for books. We’re a place that’s alive. Things are happening here.”

The Manheim Church Softball League will hold its All-Star Saturday on June 21, with proceeds from the day benefiting two Manheim missions. The celebration will take place at the league’s main field, the pool field, located adjacent to Manheim Central High School, 400 E. Adele Ave.
The day will feature two all-star games and a home run derby for the league’s players, with events beginning at 3 p.m.
Several food trucks will be on hand, serving their specialties from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. Vendors scheduled to appear are Rhyno BBQ; Catering with Attitude, serving hamburgers and hot dogs; Fry Shack; Twisted Sisters Ice Cream; and Amy’s Mixing Bowl, which will offer baked goods. The food will be available by donation, with all proceeds split and donated to Teen Central Manheim and the Home on Ferdinand.
The Manheim Church Softball League is one of the longest continuously running softball leagues in Pennsylvania. The league started in 1953 as a fast-pitch league, but in 1973, with the slow-pitch game quickly gaining popularity, the league decided to implement slow-pitch rules. It has been a slowpitch league for the last 52 years. For more information on All-Star Saturday, contact league president Mike Givler at 717-468-8172 or email mjgivler@verizon.net.
is a holy invitation, a shoplifting incident and inclement weather threaten to derail their plans and challenge their faith.”
Bair, a graduate of Hempfield High School, was serving as the minister of music and worship as well as the youth choir director at Hempfield United Methodist Church when, in early January 2000, she felt called by God to switch out the big choir tour the group held every other summer in favor of something smaller in scope but potentially larger in impact.
She had recently experienced a personal loss and recalled that the world had just recovered from the anxiety of Y2K when she asked her choir members to pray to God for direction and what to do for the trip.
“Two mornings later, I heard a strong, non-audible voice in my spirit that stopped me at the top of the stairs and bent me in half in tears,” she remembered, noting that the voice asked, “Will you and the choir give a concert just for Me?”
When she shared her experience at the next choir rehearsal, one of the members, a quiet 12-year-old student, approached her
privately about her own similar dream.
“She spilled out her dream confirming what I had heard in my spirit, of a concert just for God on a mountaintop,” Bair said. “She described the sun setting, a babbling brook and Jesus standing there smiling, saying, ‘Everyone who comes will be richly blessed.’”
The trip proved to be meaningful and spiritual for the group, and it not only inspired Bair to write her musical, but it also reconnected her with the young choir member, Andrea Heller.
Heller will play Kendra, the youth choir director modeled after Bair, in the production, but that wasn’t the original plan.
“I hadn’t been in touch or even seen her since the original trip,” Bair said. “But when the professional actress who was singing the part in the staged reading and on the recording had to bow out, we went on a search. A scam message on Facebook Messenger accidentally connected us. In reconnecting, she sent me videos of her leading worship at her church. I was stunned at how well she sang and offered her the part in the show.”
Heller had a family vacation scheduled for opening night but, with her family’s support, delayed her arrival to join the musical. Her family will watch the dress rehearsal before departing, and she’ll meet them after the shows at their vacation spot, just 30 minutes from Naked Creek Overlook.
“She plans to go back there, this time 25 years older with a whole different perspective,” Bair said.
Bair, who has a master’s degree in musical theater writing from New York University, has served as composer and co-book writer/lyricist for another full-length musical that premiered in 2010 with Opera Lancaster.
Creating “Audience of One” alone was challenging, but Bair knew only she could tell her personal story. She credits Jennifer Feltyformer choir tour mentor, now a professional actress and voice teacher - for providing vital support.
Bair noted that the idea for the musical bubbled up in September of 2020, but she didn’t begin writing, not even sure where it would lead, until March of 2022.
She said she’s worked on the production almost
nonstop for the past three years, moving from a singthrough to a staged reading, a cast album and now a full production.
At the rehearsal on Wednesday, June 18, Bair plans to take five minutes to mark the exact moment of the concert, which took place on that date in 2000.
Now living in Maryland, Bair hopes people will be inspired to see “Audience of One” to discover how a concert left a lasting impression on the choir members.
The show will feature a cast of 13 adults and 14 youths, performing with a five-piece pit band. It will be directed by Bonnie Bosso, with vocal direction by Felty. Additional staff support includes music director J.P. Meyer, set designer Anne Flinchbaugh, choreographer Marian West and stage manager Elsa Rogers.
“(Audiences) can expect top-notch local/regional talent bringing to life a story that will touch their hearts, inspire their spirits and have them singing the tunes on their way out!” Bair said.
Tickets for “Audience of One” may be purchased in advance at www.thejunction center.com/events or will be available at the door.
