Ham radio club will host field day

Duringthe pandemic, Robyn Black picked up a new hobby. She became a ham radio operator, talking to people around the country and the world. “It’s just fun,” she said, noting that her sister, Amanda Black, also earned a ham radio license. Now Robyn’s encouraging others to learn more about the hobby at the 2023 Summer Field Day.

The event will take place on the grounds of the Southern Pennsylvania Amateur Radio Club (SPARC), 1715 Breneman Road, Manheim. It will run from Saturday, June 24, through Sunday, June 25.

Robyn noted that events will be happening from noon on Saturday through noon on Sunday, but ham radio operators will be on-site all weekend long. “People sleep over,” she stated. “They stay for the whole time.”

The field day is designed to be a

Food pantry seeks donations

For 10 years, the Manheim Central Food Pantry has been serving the community from its location at 334 W. Gramby St., and the organization could use your help.

“The number of clients has increased in recent months,” shared Cathy Knittle, chairperson of the pantry. “In April, we had 153 households for a total of 466 individuals served. However, donations have decreased in recent months.”

sort of open house for ham radio, with various stations set up to showcase different forms of communication. “We’ll have some guys with a station for CW, which is Morse code,” Robyn remarked. “ We’ll have different stations, and you can get on the radio with a licensed operator. You may even be able to reach people in other countries.” A variety of food, including hamburgers and hot dogs, will be available during the event.

Ham radio allows users to talk with other people without the internet or cell service. “It’s designed to be an emergency media in case the electricity goes out or the grid goes down and there’s no other means of communication,” Robyn explained. “You don’t wish for an emergency to happen, but when it does, you’ve got to be prepared. Ham radio operators practice. We play on our radios to make sure they are up to snuff and they’re going to work when the need arises.”

For Robyn, ham radio has offered a way to make new friends. “I love talking to other people,” she noted, adding that she needs nine more states to reach people in all 50. She also participates with the Parks on the Air program, reaching out to operators in state parks across the country.

During the field day in Manheim, similar events will be happening throughout North America, with more than 40,000 temporary transmitting stations set up in public places to demonstrate how ham radio works. Field day has been organized by the American Radio Relay League since 1933.

Robyn hopes people will come to the Manheim field day to see ham radio firsthand and perhaps discover a new hobby. “Come for the fun. Come to witness the emergency practice and come for the conversation,” she said. “We want to encourage more people to try this hobby and keep it alive.”

Creativity encouraged at kids’ arts and crafts workshops

“Summertime should be a time for fun - a time to try new things without stress,” said Teresa St. Angelo, director of the Winters Heritage House Museum. With that in mind, she invites children age 8 and up to participate in kids’ summer arts and crafts workshops at the museum, 47 E. High St., Elizabethtown.

A felted soap workshop will be held on Thursday, June 22, from 2 to 4 p.m. It will be taught by Susan Wheelersburg. “Participants

will use a needle and a bar of soap to learn the wet felting technique,” St. Angelo stated. “It is easy, fun and the results are fantastic.” The registration deadline for the soap workshop is Friday, June 16.

On Wednesday, July 19, a sewing workshop will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. “The sewing workshop will allow participants to be creative in their choices of stitches and designs in order to make a stuffed pillow,” said St. Angelo, who will lead the workshop. The registration deadline f or the sewing workshop is Wednesday, July 12.

REYS to offer summer programming

School’s out for summer, and there’s plenty of fun to be found at Rainbow’s End Youth Services (REYS) as the organization rolls out its summer programming.

“We have a ‘Summer Vibe’ theme this year,” said Travis Reish, director of student ministries. “We’ll have a beach week, shark week, a superheroes week, a Star Wars week.” Summer programming will kick off on Tuesday, June

20, and will run until Monday, Aug. 7.

Programs will be offered for children in grades one through five on Mondays and Fridays. Boys in grades six through 12 are invited for programs on Tuesdays, and programs for girls in grades six through 12 are offered on Wednesdays. On Thursdays, boys and girls in grades six through 12 are invited to attend. All programs are held from 3 to 6 p.m. at REYS, 105 Fairview St., Mount Joy.

“We will be having special guests come in for our kids’ club, including ZooAmerica, who will do a presentation for families in July,” Reish stated. “Our teens will be going on outings as well, to ice cream parlors and local parks.” Special events, including a pool party, will also be held.

“Our summer programming is an opportunity to try and see if you like it,” said Hannah Wheeler, program and communications coordinator.

“You don’t have to attend every week, but you can try it out. Why not come and play games, hang out and meet new friends?” She underscored the need for many families to have places for children to go over the summer. “A lot of parents still work during the summer, so it’s helpful for parents to know students are getting exposed to a positive influence while they’re at work,” she said.

Reish emphasized that the

summer groups serve a purpose beyond just providing fun, with a mission to offer Christian programming in a welcoming space. “We want to be sure kids have a safe place to go this summer,” he said. “We want to offer a place to socialize, get a hot meal, play some games and also learn about Jesus as well.”

REYS will wrap up its summer programming with a Kids’ Carnival on Aug. 7. Featuring games and prizes, the carnival will be open to participants in REYS programs as well as the general community.

REYS will also hold its free backpack giveaway again this year for students in kindergarten through 12th grade, with distribution set to begin on Thursday, Aug. 10. Each backpack will also include school supplies. Registration is now open for the backpacks at https://reys.org/events. The organization is also looking for donations of new backpacks.

Knittle noted that the pantry will accept a variety of donations. “Some items especially needed at this time are Spam, canned pineapples, crackers, cereal, egg noodles, pork and beans and rice/pasta sides,” she stated. Donations may be dropped off at the pantry on Mondays and Thursdays from 9 to 10:30 a.m. or placed in the box on the porch any time. Monetary donations will also be accepted; to learn where to send donations, visit https://man heimcentralfoodpantry.org.

Knittle thanked the Manheim Post Office for its recent food collection, and she credits other organizations in the community with helping the food pantry continue its mission. In May, members of the youth group at East Fairview Church of the Brethren put down mulch around the property. Along with food dona-

tions from the community, the pantry received freezers that were donated by the Manheim Rotary Club, and arrangements have been made with local farmers and grocery stores as well as the Manheim Farm Show to keep the pantry stocked with meat. In addition to food, the pantry offers personal care items such as toilet paper, shampoo and soap.

Clients must live in the Manheim Central School District and must complete a self-declaration annually, listing their income and the number of people in their household.

More information, including a complete list of donation needs, may be found at https://manheimcentralfood pantry.org. Volunteers are also needed at the pantry. To volunteer or to register as a client, call 717-664-1097.

A weaving workshop will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 10. “The weaving workshop will be done using drinking straws and yarn to weave bookmarks and bracelets, with each participant using beads to finish it off,” shared St. Angelo, who will also teach this workshop. The registration deadline is Thursday, Aug. 3.

The Winters Heritage House has offered summer camp programs and family craft days in the past, but St. Angelo wanted to feature something new this year. “Giving kids opportunities to be creative, socialize, learn something new and have fun is the driving force behind providing these programs, and there is something special about the Winters Heritage House,” she shared. “The three original log cabins are quaint, cozy, welcoming and inspiring.”

She noted that experience is not required to participate in any of the workshops, although the classes are not just for beginners. “Help will be given with every step along the way,” she stated. “All programs are geared toward kids so they can accomplish and create at their pace and level.”

Children may participate in individual workshops or all

three. A discount will be offered for children registering for the series as well as for registering siblings.

“As a young girl, I tried different activities, and the enjoyment and sense of accomplishment when I could use my creativity was memorable,” St. Angelo remarked. “I look forward to providing workshops where boys and girls can create and feel pride in their work.”

St. Angelo noted that classes will be capped at 10 participants, but people may call the museum at 717-367-4672 after the registration deadline to see if there are spaces available. For more information or to register, visit https://tinyurl.com/58fn4hzy.

Barons top YS, and Obama Academy; now 17-1

There is an old saying in the sports world that not all wins are created equal with the general thought being that a late season or postseason win holds greater significance than an early season tilt. You would be hard pressed to find a sports fan that does not believe the statement to be

true on some level but if you come across an individual that needs convincing, we have the Manheim Central boys’ volleyball team. The Barons are currently rocking a 17-1 record and while back-to-back 3-0 wins over Elizabethtown (3A) and Cocalico (2A), both District 3 playoff qualifiers, to open the season were nice, they do not compare with

the 3-0 victory Central picked up on June 6th.

The reason- the June 6th win came over Obama Academy in the PIAA-2A playoffs which was Manheim’s fifth straight win in the PIAA-2A opening round and their 12th sweep of the season. Head coach Craig Dietrich mentioned discipline and serving as reasons for the 25-9, 25-9 and 2511 throttling of the Eagles, saying, “We played very disciplined volleyball which is what we want to be doing this time of year. We had 22 service aces as a team which is unheard of.”

Dylan Musser fronted the serving attack, tallying 11 aces to go with 18 assists, seven digs and two blocks. The Barons added 31 digs to their 22 aces with Colin Rohrer leading that pack with nine. Reagan Miller enjoyed four aces and three kills with his eight digs while Jacob Moyer added six kills and two aces to his seven digs. Logan Groff helped with five kills while Kevin Saengdara chipped in with three aces. Landon Mattiace joined the fun with a five block, two kill and one ace game.

Central earned that PIAA2A game with another June win, this one coming on the 1st over York Suburban. The tightly contested 3-1 victory pushed Manheim

into the PIAA field as the third and final District 3 entry while sending Suburban home for the summer. Dietrich mentioned errors as the cause behind narrow wins of 27-25, 25-23 and 26-24 as well as the 26-24 game three loss. “We didn’t play our best (27 Attack errors) but when the score got into the 20’s we played like the better more confident team.”

Having the ability to lean on five members of this year’s District 3-2A All-District team was a massive boost to the confidence that Dietrich mentioned. Of course, the team leaning on those five is not really accurate, Musser, Moyer, Mattiace, Frey and Groff were more like heavy lifters than

leaning posts. Musser, a first team selection, finished the win with a staggering 51 assists while adding 14 digs, three blocks and two aces. Moyer, also a first team member, had 14 kills, seven digs and two blocks. Central’s second team members, Frey and Mattiace combined for 10 kills, all by Mattiace, nine blocks (five for Mattiace, four for Frey) and three digs (all by Frey). Groff was the final All-District member, securing a place on the third team with the help of his 14 kill, five dig and two block game. The Barons also got big games from Rohrer (14 digs) and Peter Burkhart (14 digs, 11 kills and three blocks) while Saengdara added one ace.

Event to feature former NFL player

Chiques Church, 4045 Sunnyside Road, Manheim, will host a Kickin’ BBQ Competition on Sunday, June 25, from 4 to 8 p.m. The event will feature guest speaker David Akers, former NFL player and record-setting Philadelphia Eagles kicker.

The second annual competition will pit local barbecue masters against each other in brisket and pork butt categories, as well as a miscellaneous category, which will include chicken, ribs and prime

rib. Attendees will be able to sample the entries from each competitor, and the church will provide sides, drinks and ice cream. Grand prizes and runner-up prizes will be awarded in each category based on the judges’ scoring as well as an overall crowd favorite voted on by those attending. To sign up as a competitor before Sunday, June 18, visit www.chiques church.com/bbq.

In addition, activities will be available for children, including inflatables, barrel train

rides, and face painting from 4 to 6 p.m. After judging has ended, the barbecue competition winners will be announced, and prizes will be awarded, including YETI Tundra 75 coolers for the firstplace winners.

At 6:30 p.m., Akers will speak about the difficult situations he faced and how he persevered to find success in the NFL during his 16-season career. A meet-and-greet with the community will take place after Akers’ talk.
