Backpacks, Binoculars and Badges

When kids take a walk in Clarence Schock Memorial Park at Governor Dick, they can now become even more connected with nature. The park has launched a Junior Naturalist program, inviting participants of all ages to check out an activity backpack and spend time in the park completing activities to fill a Junior Naturalist passport and receive a badge.

“We started a Backpacks and Binoculars program, where people could check out either, but then we thought, ‘What if we incentivize people to check this out and make it kind of like a challenge?’” said park naturalist Taylor Casey. “We wanted something to encourage people to participate.”

The program is offered free of charge. Participants just need to come to the environmental center at the park, 3283 Pinch Road, Mount Gretna. They can either check out a backpack and just enjoy exploring the park or they can go for their Junior Naturalist badge, Casey said.

“We have created a passport card, and there are areas for five stamps on it - one stamp for each of the backpacks,” she explained. “Each backpack is full of goodies.”

The program is geared toward the youngest children who can read and write up to tweens, Casey stated.

Backpacks cover the topics of birds (separated by backpacks for big kids and ones for little kids), insects, trees, navigation and mammals. When a child completes the activities in all five backpacks, he or she will receive

a patch and become a Junior Naturalist.

“Each backpack has a Junior Naturalist booklet and a packet of activities to complete,” Casey said. “There are usually three activities. For the birds backpack, for example, the first activity is to look for birds and see if you can identify them. The second activity is bird anatomy, where kids are challenged to consider, ‚ÄòIf you were a bird, what would you be called? What would you look like?’ and a third activity, bird

bingo, where you might have to find a red bird, for instance.”

Each backpack contains childsize binoculars, pencils and crayons, ID guides, pamphlets and children’s books on the backpack’s subject that parents can enjoy with their child.

Along with the Junior Naturalist program, parents can check out their own binoculars to use alongside the backpack activities or individually.

Casey explained that the idea for the Junior Naturalist program

Two hundred and fifty-three years ago, Henry William Stiegel envisioned a future for both Manheim and its Lutheran congregation. Together with his second wife, Elizabeth Holtz Stiegel, he gifted a parcel of land at the corner of Wolf and East High streets to fellow Lutherans for the purpose of building their first church.

The deed, dated Dec. 4, 1772, reads in part, “for and in consideration of the sum of five shillings yielding and paying unto the said Henry William Stiegel, his heirs or assigns at the said town of Manheim in the month of June yearly forever hereafter the Rent of One Red Rose if the same shall be lawfully demanded.”

On Sunday, June 8, Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, located at 2 S. Hazel St., Manheim, will host the 133rd annual Festival of the Red Rose, and the

public is invited. The celebration will begin with worship at 10:30 a.m., featuring special music by the church choir and spiritual readings by pastor Kathryn Warn. Prior to the service, refreshments will be served in the church’s Rose Parlor, courtesy of the Manheim Historical Society.

It’s more than books on wheels. The Library System of Lancaster County’s (LSLC) bookmobile delivers knowledge, creativity, inspiration and joy. The bookmobile is kind of like a food truck serving up nourishment for the mind and soul.

“Reading in general is very important,” said Audrey Lilley, the bookmobile’s driver, curator and full-time coordinator. “It’s important for kids to be reading. It’s important for them to

be able to pick up a book and see characters who look like them. Reading can be inspirational, and with retirees, it kind of comes full circle. I think retirees can find comfort in reading. For all people in between, it’s a way to relax and unwind.”

When not on the go to multiple locations all across Lancaster County, Lilley parks the bookmobile at LSLC’s main office at 1866 Colonial Village Lane, Suite 107, Lancaster. The bookmobile is a 22-foot-long box truck with a single entrance and

culents, houseplants, custom arrangements, workshops and more.

Seasoned collectors or people who are just plant-curious will find everything from carnivorous curiosities and exotic aroids to handmade planters, propagation accessories and custom plant decor.

Shoppers can expect to find bonsai, rare variegated philodendron, monstera, alocasia hoya and succulents. Many of the plants are grown, raised or propagated by the sellers themselves. These plants are primarily those that cannot be found in local garden centers or greenhouses.

Highlights of the day will include a rare plant swap (registration required), dayof-event coupons from many participating vendors and vendor question-and-answer sessions.

About two dozen vendors will sell rare and exotic plants. New and returning vendors will include JulLeigh Country Crafts, The Dirty Hoe Plant Co., The Sagebrush Shack, Chaos Carnivorez, Fat Cat Bonsai, Katie Rose Studio, Green Menagerie Plants, Leafwoven Lore (author and hybrid developer), Demilune Plant Co., The Planted Mama and Dave’s House Plants & More.

equipped with a wheelchair lift and portable book carts.

“If we can fit into the space, we’ll come to it,” said Lilley. “When you get up in there and turn to your left, it’s just walls of books. We can tailor the materials to the crowd we’re going to see. We have shelves of cool stuff. It’s a neat operation. I really love it.”

In an effort to provide reading materials to local citizens who experience difficulties getting to their community libraries, the LSLC bookmobile visits more than 45 unique locations each month, places like schools, retirement communities, churches, local events and child care centers. The stops are typically an hour to 90 minutes in length and usually well attended.

“We want to serve patrons in the community who might struggle to reach their brick-andmortar libraries,” said Lilley, a resident of West Lampeter Township. “We’re able to meet them where they’re at. We’re always looking for new places to go. We want to talk to patrons. We want to hear what they want to read. That’s how we build our collection.”

“A lot of it is people reaching out to us for bookmobile services,” continued Lilley. “Most of the communities will reach out to us and let us know they’re interested.”

The bookmobile has the capacity to house 2,000 pieces of reading materials, including fiction and nonfiction books, New York Times bestsellers, children’s books, young readers’ book series, the works of local authors, books about local history and events, religious books, holiday and seasonal books, and large-print books. But the bookmobile also rolls with DVDs, music, audio books, kits, puppets and brain teasers.

In 2024, 1,600 LSLC bookmobile patrons checked out 15,539 pieces of material.

“We offer all kinds of services,” said Lilley.

“We can help people look up something. We can print on-site. We can refer people to their local libraries. People can check out books and return books, even if they didn’t get them from the bookmobile. However we can help to bridge that connection.”

“I really love when some one’s not sure what they want and I can help them find it,” Lilley continued. “Then having them come back and tell me if they liked it or not. Just get ting to know patrons in that way is really fun.”

While the bookmobile is one-of-a-kind, it’s not

who said that they didn’t know the bookmobile was

The birth of the LSLC bookmobile can be traced back to the 1960s. The current bookmobile is the sixth vehicle to serve the program.

came from some of the volunteers who help with park programming.

“Someone had mentioned that Middle Creek does something similar, and I thought it was a great idea,” she recalled. “It’s just a fun way to explore the park.”

Governor Dick Park features more than 1,100 acres of forested park. “We have over 15 miles of trails,” Casey said. “We have an observation tower, an environmental education center and a mud kitchen area.”

As she explained, the mud kitchen provides opportunities for kids to play in the dirt and make mud pies or other “treats” using the wooden sink, pots, pans and utensils on-site.

“Kids have a really fun time playing in the kitchen,” Casey said. “They get really creative with the things they make.”

She hopes people will take advantage of the Junior Naturalist program, which has already proven to be popular in the few weeks since its release.

“This is a good bonding time for families,” she said. “People can help their kids do the activities, read the books with them and watch their children learn about nature.”

Kreider’s Strawberries

“Individuals can expect a warm, friendly welcome from the congregation as well as the Stiegel heirs as the church celebrates its legacy,” said Linda Keiffer, chair of the festival committee.

Henry William Stiegel was affectionately dubbed “Baron” by townsfolk due to his grand lifestyle. Though skilled in various trades, he is most fondly remembered as a devoted Christian churchman. Stiegel is believed to have personally received the red rose in 1773 and 1774. However, the tradition faded after he suffered severe financial setbacks and spent time in Philadelphia’s debtor’s prison. Following his release in December 1774, he never returned to Manheim, and the symbolic “rent” was eventually forgotten.

Local physician J.H. Sieling, a member of the congregation, revived the tradition

after learning of Baron Stiegel and the curious tale of the red rose. In 1891, while a new church was under construction, Sieling unearthed the original deed and proposed an annual celebration if a Stiegel descendant could be found.

On June 4, 1892, John Calvin Stiegel of Harrisonburg, Va., great-greatgrandson of Henry William and Elizabeth Holtz Stiegel, traveled with his wife, Maggie, to Manheim to receive the first rose in more than a century.

Each year on the second Sunday in June, the Lutheran congregation honors this legacy by presenting “the rent of one red rose” to a chosen Stiegel heir.

This year, Andrew Robertson Black of Chatham, Mass., a ninth-generation descendant of Henry William and Elizabeth Huber Stiegel, will

Manheim Lions Club Sets Spring Clean Event

accept the ceremonial rose. Born in 1943 at the Philadelphia Naval Hospital, Andrew was raised in Sewickley, near Pittsburgh. He earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Virginia and later received a doctorate in history from Boston University. During his career with Mars, Inc., he and his wife, Peggy, spent five years in Dusseldorf, Germany, and both are fluent in German. Andrew has authored two books: a biography of John Pendleton Kennedy and a detailed chronicle of the Hoosac Tunnel’s construction in western Massachusetts. Today, the couple resides on Cape Cod, enjoying gardening, sailing and the charm of coastal New England.

Attorney J.D. Young Jr. of the Manheim law firm Young & Young will serve as Zion’s legal representative to

witness Andrew’s signature in the historic rent book. A graduate of Manheim Central High School, Gettysburg College, and the Delaware Law School of Widener University, Young is affiliated with both the Pennsylvania and Lancaster bar associations and actively participates on several community boards.

“I would encourage individuals to attend the Festival of the Red Rose to experience a unique, time-honored celebration and to learn about the history of Zion Lutheran Church,” Keiffer said. “Attendees will see a church decorated with red roses based on the deed of Henry William Stiegel to honor his heirs.”

To learn more about the Festival of the Red Rose, visit www.zionmanheim .com or call the church office at 717-665-5880.

Texting Service Available to Turnpike Travelers

The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PA Turnpike) has officially launched a new text messaging service, offering customers real-time communication during unexpected traffic backlogs.

The free service is available 24/7 and is designed only for PA Turnpike customers experiencing unexpected backlogs. While at a complete stop in a location where it is safe to remain stationary, through hands-free devices and voice command or through a passenger in the car, travelers may text “info” to 47676. Users are walked through prompts to verify their backlog location using GPS. Once the information is confirmed, the service provides automated

updates every 15 to 20 minutes, including location-specific information about the incident, anticipated clearance times, and roadway updates. Texts stop after an incident clears. To reactivate the service for a new incident, text 47676 again. This is not used for daily commuter traffic or constructed-related delays.

In June, Paul Miller’s Law will go into effect, prohibiting the use of hand-held mobile devices while driving. Drivers are expected to follow this and all other applicable laws and regulations related to the use of mobile devices in vehicles.

The concept for the text messaging service originated from the PA Turnpike’s annual employee innovation challenge,

styled after the “Shark Tank” reality competition. The idea was for all customers to be able to text for incident updates when stuck in a backlog. This service complements existing customer

assistance offerings such as *11 and 511. Drivers can also call 911 at any time for life-threatening emergencies; criminal activity; and immediate police, fire, or EMS assistance.
