This is the story of an advocate for agriculture and a theater kid. As members of the Manheim Central High School Class of 2026, who graduated on May 29, John “Nate” Huber and Lilie West represent the hope, ambition and positivity of their classmates as their high school journey comes

Nate, the son of John and Stephanie Huber of Manheim, has been an active member of the school’s FFA chapter and agricultural education program. He’s also worked at the Manheim Farm Show and the Pennsylvania Farm Show, and he’s employed by two local farms, one focused on poultry and the other on hay and straw.

He will attend Penn State University this fall to study agribusiness
“I was about as much of a farm kid as someone could be for someone who didn’t grow up on a farm,” he said. “I also like to say my parents got me a job for Christmas, and that’s how it all started.”
When he was 12 years old, Nate began working at a poultry farm at the suggestion of his parents.
“I tried it out, and I loved it,” he said of the job he still holds. “Farming is so rewarding. The hard work

Spend an afternoon at Salem United Methodist Church, 140 N. Penn St., Manheim, and enjoy the annual Strawberry Sundae Talent Show on Sunday, June 7. Strawberry sundaes will be served from 4 to 6 p.m., and the talent show will begin at 6:30 p.m. The event is a fundraiser for the church’s upcoming mission program through Appalachia Service Project (ASP).
“The strawberries provided will be picked locally by our ASP team,” said Doug Winters, ASP trip coordinator. “There will be ice cream and a variety of cakes to make your own sundaes. At 6:30, there will be a talent show in our sanctuary featuring a variety of musical acts performed by church members and members of the community.”
The talent show will include a celloist, along with several pianists and vocalists.
“Our Salem bell choir will perform, as well as our Salem Singers,” Winters said.
The event has been a tradition at Salem United Methodist Church for decades.
“My predecessor, Don Yingst, started this fundraiser when our church started going on ASP 44 years ago,” Winters shared. “It has been a tremendous blessing and continues to be as our team of volunteers grows every year.”
Winters explained that ASP is a mission located in the Appalachian Mountain regions of the eastern United States. It serves in Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee and North Carolina.
“The purpose behind it is to repair homes for individuals who are physically and/or financially unable to maintain their properties to make them warmer, safer and drier,” he said. “The work

Gretna Theatre, one of America’s oldest summer theaters, has announced its 99th anniversary season.
The mainstage season will offer four productions, beginning with “Always … Patsy Cline” from Thursday to Sunday, June 4 to 7. Directed by Michelle Tattenbaum, the show was inspired by the real-life friendship between country singer Patsy Cline and her fan Louise Seger. It features 27 of Cline’s hits, including “Crazy” and “I Fall to Pieces.”
“A Night With Janis Joplin” will be presented from Thursday to Sunday, June 18 to 21. Tracing Joplin’s journey from small-town Texas to international stardom, the show includes songs like “Piece of My Heart” and “Me and Bobby McGee.”
The season will continue with the American premiere of “Murder at Ackerton Manor” from Thursday to Sunday, July 9 to 12. Directed by Alex Keiper, it is a fast-paced comedic mystery that was inspired by Agatha Christie and features three actors portraying seven characters.
The mainstage season will close with “Hair” from
Thursday to Sunday, July 23 to Aug. 2. Directed by Gretna Theatre’s producing artistic director, Michael Philip O’Brien, the Grammy- and Tony Award-winning musical captures the spirit of the 1960s through songs like “Aquarius,” “Hair,” and “Let the Sunshine In.”
In addition to its mainstage lineup, Gretna Theatre will present a series of special events throughout the summer, including “Good Vibrations: A Celebration of The Beach Boys” on Saturday, June 27. “Puppy Pals LIVE” on Thursday, July 16, will deliver a family-friendly spectacle of rescued dogs performing stunts and tricks. The season will conclude with “Broadway’s Best: A Night of Musical Showstoppers” on Friday and Saturday, Aug. 21 to 22.
As Gretna Theatre approaches its centennial, its 99th season seeks to reflect both its enduring legacy and its commitment to creating bold, engaging live theater experiences for generations to come.

is unmatched, and it’s so rewarding to see all the benefits of the hard work you put in.”
Through FFA, Nate began considering college. He’s been inspired by numerous teachers, including Allyson Heckman, his FFA adviser.
“Mrs. Heckman has high expectations, and that was something I needed, somebody to push me further than what I thought possible,” he said. “I had the opportunity to take legislative trips to advocate for agriculture, and that put the idea of being an advocate into my mind.”
While FFA and agriculture dominated Nate’s high school years, Lilie found herself on the school’s stage.
“I’ve been in every show Manheim has done during my four years of high school as well as my eighth-grade year,” she said. “I’ve also been president of the Thespian Honor Society since sophomore year.”
Lilie, the daughter of Derek and Laurie West of Mount Joy, originally wanted to be a lawyer
when she grew up, but her experience at Manheim Central changed her career path.
“I’ve always loved English,” she said. “I’ve always enjoyed literature, and I try to read as much as I can. I believe it makes you more aware of the world around you.”
Like Nate, she found inspiration and support from numerous teachers at Manheim Central, but she also credits her fifth-grade teacher, Mrs. Thomas, for setting her on a path toward the humanities.
“I used to write silly little books, and she would read them and put a lot of thought into what I was doing,” Lilie recalled. “She’d help me with my grammar, my storylines, how I could improve my writing, and I’m really grateful for that.”
Lilie will attend Lebanon Valley College in the fall, where she plans to major in secondary English education with a minor in musical theater.
“I can’t see myself doing anything else other than sharing the love I have for English,” she said.

She’s the first person in her family to attend college, and she intentionally chose Lebanon Valley because the small school reminded her of the close-knit Manheim community.
Nate agreed, adding, “I’m a people person. I find a lot of value in being kind to everybody and friendly with everybody. I’m going to miss having a community of people I grew up with around me. This place feels like home.”
Both Nate and Lilie remain optimistic about what’s in store for them.
“I’m most excited about all the new opportunities that are coming,” Nate said. “I asked for a piece of advice from the seniors when I was a freshman in FFA, and they said, ‘Don’t say no.’ So that’s exactly what I did, and it’s led me to some really amazing places.”
Lilie said she feels blessed to attend college and that she’s focused on one step at a time.
“I like to look at the smaller accomplishments that can lead to a larger goal, rather than getting anxious about what could happen,” she said.
Above all, Lilie said, if she could give advice to students just starting high school, she’d remind them to never give up.
“It’s always important to keep going and keep trying for what you really want,” she said. “Even if you don’t get it, it doesn’t mean that you’re not good enough or you’re not talented. It just means this wasn’t the opportunity for you and you need to continue trying.”
And both students stress the importance of working hard to achieve goals.
“My dad is the hardest worker I know,” Lilie said, noting that she also sees the effort her mom puts in. “I see how hard my parents work in everyday life, and I’m proud to be able to say I work as hard as they do to get what I want.”
Nate simply added, “You need to trust that hard work pays off.”

Penn State Extension will offer a free, live online course designed to help Spanish-speaking poultry workers build communication skills for workplace success and advancement.
“Communication Skills for Spanish-Speaking Poultry Workers” is a fourweek, instructor-led program focused on everyday workplace language used in poultry operations. Webinars will occur from 1:30 to 3 p.m. on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from June 9 to July 1.
Taught in Spanish, the
course is aimed at providing a supportive environment for learning practical English and building confidence. The training will follow the approach of Extension’s English4Ag programs: teach what matters most, keep it practical, and connect language directly to the job.
Participants will learn how to use essential English vocabulary on the farm, communicate clearly with supervisors and co-workers, understand workplace instructions and expectations, strengthen safety

awareness through key terms and phrases, and build confidence to take on new responsibilities.
Employers in the poultry industry continue to identify communication as one of the biggest barriers to safety, efficiency, and employee advancement. By focusing on job-specific language and real scenarios, this program can help bridge that gap, benefiting both workers and employers.
The course will be taught by Maria Gorgo-Simcox, Ashley Bigge, and Gino Lorenzoni of Penn State Extension, along with Hope Kassube of the University of Minnesota.
Recordings will be available. For more information and to register, visit https://extension .psu.edu/communi cation-skills-for-span ish-speaking-poultry -workers.

The LCBC Motorsports Show will feature antique cars, classics, muscle cars, tuners, motorcycles, street rods, lifted trucks and scale model cars from across the region. This year’s featured theme celebrates pickup trucks, with a dedicated showcase area highlighting everything from restored antiques to custom offroad builds.
“We are one of the largest free car shows on the East Coast,” said Hershey, show organizer. “We average around 12,000 people here, and around 1,500 to 1,800 vehicles.”
This is the 25th anniversary of the motorsports show, which began through the men’s ministry at LCBC.
“Our first show was just a couple of grills set up and probably 10 to 20 vehicles,” Hershey recalled. “It was just a fun idea we had, and it’s grown from that.”
He noted that people come from as far away as Florida to participate in
the show, adding, “We’ve had people come from 10 different states.”
The show is about more than vehicles, he said. It’s about creating a place where people can come together, enjoy the day with family and friends and experience community in a real and welcoming way.
Food vendors will be on-site, including Dog House Grill, Stacey’s Orangeade, Sittin’ Pickin’ Chickin’, Bricker’s French Fries, Scoops Ice Cream & Grille, Noel’s Café, Funcky Candy X-Press, Kreider Farms and the LCBC café.
Families can also enjoy free activities throughout the day, such as face painting, inflatables, mobile mini golf and RC Monster Trucks.
One of the day’s highlights will be a special appearance by the Life Lion helicopter team, Hershey said, noting that people will have the opportunity to watch the helicopter land on-site, meet the crew and experience a live takeoff later in the event.
Trophies will be awarded in a variety of categories for motorcycles, model cars and other vehicles.
“Our trophies are completely unique to all car shows,” Hershey said. “They are created by one

of the guys on our show team in the design of an old gas pump with the show’s specific theme vehicle on it. People that are into car shows, they love our trophies.”
All entrants will also be eligible to win a grand prize NAPA one-of-a-kind toolbox, which will be awarded by random drawing.
The general public will have the opportunity to win grand prizes of a Hershey Antique Auto Museum package and a trailer from Keystone Trailers. People can scan a QR code on-site and choose to enter for either prize or for both.
Hershey invites everyone out for the motorsports show.
“You’re going to see some of the coolest vehicles around,” he said. “And if you’re not as into cars, we have tons of stuff for the whole family to enjoy. Originally, this was strictly focused on car show people, but through the years, we’ve grown it and cultivated it to be a family event with lots of cool things for kids to experience.”

In the event of inclement weather, the show will be held on Saturday, June 20, at the same time and location.
To register a vehicle for the show, visit www.lcbc church.com/Motorsports.
The Touchstone Foundation will use its $255,766 award to expand and strengthen Rise Above, a youth mental wellness initiative serving approximately 1,120 students and young adults ages 12 to 26 across Lancaster County. The funds will pay a partial amount of the current program manager’s time, pay for a program assistant and an operations manager and accountant, and support employee benefits and travel to school districts within Lancaster County. Funding will also be used to support program evaluation led by Millersville University’s Carrie Smith, as well as communications-related costs such as photography and video documentation.
Rise Above responds directly to community needs documented in the 2023 Pennsylvania Youth Survey and the Touchstone Foundation’s 2023 Needs Assessment, which showed high rates of depression, suicidal ideation, bullying, exclusion, and barriers to mental health access among Lancaster County youths. Through partnerships with local school districts, mental health professionals, and community organizations, the program blends mental health education, creative self-expression, youth leadership development, and mentorship to address gaps in early identification, access to support, and trusted adult relationships.
Community Clearinghouse Agency Inc. is starting a new program to serve senior citizens in the Lancaster area. Those age 70 or older can receive money through the program to help with pressing needs, up to a maximum of $1,000. Funds may be used for needs such as groceries, utilities, doctor visits, medication, other small bills, or various other needs. There is a one-time fee to cover the account setup. The organization is seeking donations of a laptop and tablet with the Windows 11 operating system, as well as men’s suits, sizes 42 to 44. A van is also needed to deliver goods to clients. To help with these donations, call 717-669-9323.
Monetary donations are also needed to help raise funds for the program. Individuals and small businesses may send donations to the organization at 556 Church St., Suite 101, Mount Joy. The Lancaster County Conservation District (LCCD) recently recognized outstanding efforts in natural resource conservation at its 73rd awards banquet at the Farm and Home Center in Lancaster.
The 2026 Outstanding Cooperator of the Year Award was presented to the Twin Lane Farm, operated by Bob and Doreen Shearer and Michael and Julie Shearer, for their commitment to conservation on their farm. The Shearers have worked closely with the Conservation District and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Natural Resources Conservation Service for more than 25 years. The family has implemented conservation best management practices, including grassed waterways, a mortality composter, a roofed heavy-use area, no-till farming, and cover crops. The family has helped to educate others on conservation by hosting field days and site visits.
The LCCD watershed program awarded the Watershed Excellence Award to John D. Hoover, whose farm was part of a stream

restoration project. Hoover worked alongside LCCD staff members and an excavating team, restoring 2,200 feet of streambank and instream habitat, and planted hundreds of trees to establish a riparian buffer. He engaged his community in the project, supporting opportunities for others to learn about sustainable practices. His dedication and stewardship demonstrated how farming can support environmental restoration, protect water quality, and inspire future generations.
The erosion and sedimentation program recognized the Lancaster Civil Engineering Company with the Building Industry Resource Conservation Award. Lancaster Civil Engineering Company received the award because it consistently prepares stormwater discharge permit applications and works collaboratively with LCCD.
The Ann Brown Scholarship recipients for the current school year were announced. This college scholarship is awarded to graduating high school seniors who plan to pursue secondary studies in the fields of agriculture or conservation of natural resources. Lauren Smith and Ellie Eshleman received the 2025-26 scholarships.
Conestoga Township was honored with the Low Volume Road Project Award. Conestoga Township worked with LCCD’s low-volume road program to build a technically sound project on Brenner Hollow Road that reduced stormwater impacts to a local stream. To do so, the township engaged landowners, worked within a limited area, solved a resource concern, and stayed within its budget. LCCD recognized the project for technical ingenuity, community engagement, and responsible use of public funding.
Rick Purnell has volunteered at the Lancaster County Youth Conservation School as a fly-tier instructor for more than 15 years. Donating supplies and materials for all students to participate, he’s generously offered students hands-on experience, developing an appreciation for this

I host live “Moving On: Downsizing to Right-Sizing” seminars for seniors, and most recent attendees said they learned about the event through my ad in the Merchandiser. It outperformed all my other advertising efforts—postcards, social media, and other newspapers— proving how effective local print advertising can be in reaching my target audience. This is a valuable and effective local publication for connecting with readers for the audience I was seeking.
