Watershed Expo will highlight local environment

“This is our favorite outreach event because we are able to bring so many people together, both exhibitors and visitors, that share a passion for clean water and an excitement for taking measures to be good stewards of our local environment,” said Steve Gergely, describing the Chiques Creek W atershed Alliance’s Watershed Expo. “Having families and children attend is also great to introduce young people to their local environment in a fun way. There are numerous hands-on activities that keep everyone engaged.”

The expo will be held on Wednesday, June 7, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at the Manheim Farm Show Complex, 502 E. Adele Ave.

Strawberry Sundae Talent Show will support mission trip

Enjoy a sweet treat and follow it up with some sweet entertainment at Salem United Methodist Church’s annual Strawberry Sundae Talent

Show. The event will be held on Sunday, June 4, at the church, 140 N. Penn St., Manheim. An ice cream social will run from 4 to 6 p.m., followed by the talent show starting at 6:30 p.m.

“A variety of environmental organizations will have display tables,” said Gergely, who is the president of the Chiques Creek Watershed Alliance. “The theme is ‘Environmental and Watershed Stewardship.’ We’ll also have a fish shocking demonstration from the Lancaster County Conservation District, fish-print T-shirt making, a creekside macroinvertebrate lesson from the Lancaster County Parks Department, tours of the recently renovated Memorial Park and floodplain restoration project, rain barrel painting and a giveaway, water balloon tossing, a f ood truck, free ice cream and a band.”

Gergely said the Alliance is especially excited to offer tours of the completed floodplain restoration

project. “Hosting the expo directly adjacent to the park could not be a better way to demonstrate positive things that are happening in our watershed,” he remarked.

He encourages everyone to come out to the expo, noting, “Visitors can expect to have a nice family evening out by the Chiques Creek, where they can socialize and interact with various exhibitors. And they can expect to learn new things and to hopefully be inspired.”

Gergely added that people who wish to participate in the macroinvertebrate lesson in the creek should bring shoes and clothes that can get wet. For more information on the expo, search f or “Chiques Creek Watershed Alliance” on Facebook or visit www.chiquescreekwatershed.com.

Mt. Hope will mark birthday

Mt. Hope Nazarene Retirement Community will celebrate its 54th birthday, and you’re invited to the party. The facility, which provides care for seniors and people with disabilities regardless of their ability to pay, will host a “Love Mt. Hope Giving Day” on Friday, June 2, which marks the community’s birthday, as well as an old-fashioned community picnic on Saturday, June 17.

“The one-day give is a chance to pay it forward, and together, we can change lives,” said Kris Wilson, director of advancement at Mt. Hope. “On this one-day giving challenge, generous gifts make an impact today and for the future.” Donations may be made online at https://mthope nazarene.org or by mail to the retirement community. For details on how to donate by mail, contact Wilson at advancement@mthope nazarene.org.

Talent Show

“The strawberries we use are picked locally,” said Doug Winters, coordinator of the event. The berries will be served with ice cream and shortcakes, as well as various toppings. Drinks and pretzels will also be available.

The talent show will feature members of the congregation. Performers will include Mandy Sheetz, the handbell ensemble, Sandy White, Joyce Drake and Jack Rutt, Charlie and Doug Win-

ters, Adelyne Trovinger, Tom Breneisen, Cody Grissinger and Fern Habecker and Frank Rittenhouse. Performances will include songs, a guitar solo, a skit, a dance and a piano and organ duet.

Admission to the event is by donation, and all proceeds will benefit a church mission trip. This year, a group will go to Prestonsburg, Ky., to complete work through Appalachia Service Project (ASP). The region where the group will be going,

in Floyd County, Kentucky, experienced severe flooding last summer, Doug noted, adding that the group will most likely be helping to rebuild and restore damage from that. Doug added that this will be the 41st year that members of Salem Church have worked with ASP.

Doug, who has been coordinating the mission trip for more than 25 years, said not only does the Strawberry Sundae Talent Show offer a way to support the church and its mission work, but it also is a fun evening out. “There is a lot of variety in the talent show,” he remarked. “It’s always entertaining.”

The community is also invited to the picnic, which will be held from 5 to 7 p.m., rain or shine, at Mt. Hope. “We are so excited to host an event on our campus again,” Wilson shared. “In the past, Mt. Hope always invited the community out for a summer picnic in June and a fall harvest fest in October, but we have not been able to do an in-person event since the summer of 2019 due to limitations and regulations on nursing homes surrounding the coronavirus.”

Mt. Hope’s old-fashioned summer picnic meal will include a choice of grilled burgers or chicken sandwiches, with the meat donated by Elstonville Sportsman’s Association in Manheim. Other picnic meal items will include Mt. Hope’s famous baked beans, chips, cookies and assorted drinks. Music will be provided at the picnic by Mark Shaw of the Lancaster County-based Celtic/Irish band Boys From Innisfree.

John Wagner, a longtime Manheim community resident and former Mt. Hope board member, described Mt. Hope as one of Lancaster County’s best-kept secrets. “My mother was there for almost 27 years until she passed at the age of 104,” Wagner shared. “Mother was well cared for and enjoyed the pleasant surroundings and loving staff. The meals were exceptional, and she loved it.” He added that Mt. Hope prioritizes caring for those in need

MC diamond teams bow out in District openers

Win or go home might be an OK phrase when talking about college basketball and the NBA but if your attention is turned to the world of high school sports and the playoffs that come with them, it is not a phrase you want to hear. Need proof, ask the baseball and softball teams at Manheim Central. Both squads enjoyed stellar regular seasons only to bow out of the postseason in the opening round.

For the Lady Barons that came on May 22nd with a 1614 loss to Ephrata in the opening round of the District 3-5A playoffs. The two teams traded blows through six innings and entered the final frame in an 8-8 deadlock.

Riley Hostetter surrendered the final eight runs of her season in the top of the seventh, putting all 16 Lady Mountaineer runs on her stat sheet and giving Ephrata a 16-8 cushion.

Central answered with a six-run frame that left the Lady Barons just short of the comeback while giving the win to Ephrata.

Hostetter may have been on the hook for all 16 Ephrata runs but eight Manheim errors shifted all but three of those runs into the unearned category. The sophomore added three strikeouts and two walks to her game tally. Hostetter also helped her own cause with a five-hit day at the plate that included three RBI.

Brianna Mylin was the star on offense, driving in six runs on three hits that included a three-run blast in the sixth inning. Ava Kenneff added two RBI as part of the seventh inning rally while Hailey Peterson enjoyed three singles in the game but picked up her lone RBI with a seventh inning fielder’s choice.

BASEBALL

The baseball team had their one and done moment on the 19th where a 10-0 loss to Muhlenberg closed out Manheim’s season. Jared Murray lasted just one inning but was hit with seven of those 10 runs, giving the lefty the loss.

Cayde Connelly covered the next four innings and two Muhl runs while Cole Lawhorne surrendered the final run that ended the game with the 10-run rule.

Central managed just five singles, one each by Connelly, Ty Clugston, Ky Watson, Logan McGallicher and Colin Neiles.

VOLLEYBALL

The boys’ volleyball team made history on May 17th, earning their first ever Lancaster-Lebanon League Championship trophy after topping defending champ Warwick by a 3-1 count in the finals.

“Great piece of hardware that this program hasn’t won since we came into the league in 06-07,” was head coach Craig Dietrich’s simple exclamation. “The guys showed a lot of grit playing from behind in games three and four.”

The grit that Dietrich mentioned resulted in the match sealing wins of 28-26 and 2518, both coming after Warwick had evened the match at one game apiece with a 25-16 game two win. Central claimed the opening game 2512 to seize early control with only the quick reversal giving Warwick control in game two.

Both Jacob Moyer and Logan Groff finished with eight kills, Moyer added three blocks while Groff had two. Dylan Musser added four kills and two blocks to his 37 assists while Landan Mattiace posted a team high 11 kills to go with four blocks. Peter Burkhart added seven kills and Toby Frey another five.

As you might expect from the section champion, Manheim picked up quite a few All-Section nods for the season. In fact, the Barons compromised exactly half of the first team thanks to Musser, Mattiace, Frey, Moyer and Groff all earning first team All-Star honors.

“It’s always nice to pick up accolades (All Stars) and those five guys, as well as the others, have been putting the time in all year long,” said Dietrich.

TRACK

The track and field season is down to just two athletes for Manheim Central after the

Barons took part in the District 3 Championship Meet on May 19th and 20th. Central picked up eight district medals with Maddie Knier collecting half of those. The senior standout posted state qualifying marks in all four of her events highlighted by a second-place toss of 131’ 7” in the javelin. Add in matching bronze medals in the high jump (5’ 4”) and long jump (19’ 9”) along with a fifth place in the triple jump (37’ 0.25”) and it is obvious why Knier is headed the University of Pennsylvania to compete in track and field for the Ivy league school.

Landon McGallicher also qualified for the PIAA meet after finishing 5th in the 110 hurdles with a time of 14.88. The senior also added a seventh-place finish in the 300 hurdles, posting a 40.11.

Abbie Reed picked up Manheim’s lone solo medal on the track, taking sixth place in the 300 hurdles with a time of 46.33 which was 0.08 seconds off the state qualifying standard.

Central’s last solo medal came in the girl’s shot put where Laci Nelson finished sixth, her 37’ 0.75” missing the state qualifying mark by just over five inches.

The Lady Barons also accounted for the final medal thanks to the work of Sarah Forry, Reagan Ibach, Julia Kahler and Julie Lindberg. The quartet clocked a 9:48.61 in the 3200m relay, good enough for eighth place.

Liz Voegele just missed joining Reed on the 300 hurdles podium, her 46.58 placing her a mere 0.33 seconds off the medal stand in ninth place.

Chloe Enck rounded out the Lady Baron’s weekend with an 18th place finish in the discus.

Wyatt Kupres found himself 13th in the final boy’s discus standings, his top toss coming in at 142’ 1”. Zach Hahn and Kahlen Watt were also in Shippensburg, both competing in the javelin. Hahn settled for 16th place with his top throw of 144’ 3” while Watt was two spots back with his 142’ 2”.

Family Farm Days will celebrate agriculture

Produce doesn’t come from a market. Milk and eggs don’t come from a grocery store.

They all come from farms.

That’s the message that the organizers of Family Farm

Days are trying to convey. Farms always have been, and will likely continue to be, the most important producer of food in Lancaster County.

This year’s edition of Family Farm Days will be conducted from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on

Tuesday, June 13; from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, June 14; and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursday, June 15, at Oregon Dairy, 2900 Oregon Pike, Lititz. The annual event, which offers free admission, is being sponsored by Lancaster County Agriculture Council and Oregon Dairy.

“If we wouldn’t have farms, we wouldn’t have food,” said Maria Forry, a partner at Oregon Dairy. “It’s that simple. If every single person had their own garden, farms wouldn’t be as important. But that’s not very realistic.”

W hile the purpose of Family Farm Days is to serve as an educational tool, there’s certainly a celebratory piece to the event as well.

Family Farm Days will feature tractor and wagon rides, animal petting, short presentations at the Barnyard Theater, Farm Show milkshakes, free samples of Oregon Dairy milk and ice cream, hot dogs and barbecue. The event will also include vendors, farm

Scout group, KPETS plan race

The Pennsylvania Dutch Council of Boy Scouts of America will collaborate with Keystone Pet Enhanced Therapy Services (KPETS) to host a virtual race during the month of June. Proceeds from the race will be shared between KPETS and the Pennsylvania Dutch Council.

The community and Scouting families are invited to participate by running, walking, biking, hiking, or otherwise completing a 5K or 15K at home, in their neighborhood, on a track, or on their favorite trail. Participants will be emailed a bib that they can print and are asked to share a picture of their race on the virtual race Facebook event page.

The registration fee will include a patch to commemorate the race. To register, visit http://padutchbsa.org /virtualrace. For more information, contact Nicole Welch at nicole.welch@scouting.org.

exhibits and information from agricultural organizations like the Lancaster County 4-H Club, the Lancaster County Conservation District and the Pennsylvania Friends of Agriculture Foundation.

“It’s an opportunity for people to come onto a working farm and learn about agriculture and make the connection between farms and the food they eat,” said Forry. “What we want people to know is that farmers care about their land and their animals. If we don’t care about our land, it’s not a sustainable business. We’re consumers too.”

Forry said that across the nation, 2% of the population is involved in production farming and that what that group produces helps sustain the other 98%.

Crowds between 12,000 and 15,000 people are expected over the three days of this year’s Family Farm Days. To pull it off, the event requires hundreds of volunteers.

“They’re our neighbors,” said Forry. “A lot of them are Lancaster County residents, but they also come from neighboring counties. They come from all over Lancaster County. It’s a lot of parents and younger kids or grandparents with grandkids. It’s a good come-and-go flow.”

Family Farm Days began in the mid-1980s as sort of an open house at a farm. But the event really took off in the 1990s when the Lancaster Chamber of Commerce’s Agriculture Committee became involved.

“It’s something we want to continue to offer every year,” added Forry. “We want to have more learning, but we’re not looking to grow this to 20,000 or 30,000 people. It takes a tremendous amount of people to make this happen.”

Funding will benefit Girls on the Run

With aims to combat health disparities and advance fitness and friendships among adolescent girls, Rite Aid Healthy Futures has renewed its partnership with Girls on the Run (GOTR) through a $1 million grant supporting the organization’s continued inclusion, diversity, equity and access (IDEA) work. The announcement comes as local GOTR councils prepare for their end-of-season 5Ks. GOTR’s experience-based curriculum integrates running to inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident. The organization currently operates 171 local councils across the United States and Canada, serving nearly 200,000 girls annually.

The recent funding marks the third year of partnership between GOTR and Rite Aid Healthy Futures, the public

charity affiliated with Rite Aid. The grant supports the two organizations’ shared commitment to strengthening and empowering local communities.

The $1 million grant will benefit the GOTR headquarters as well as the 50 local councils in Healthy Futures’ footprint, with funding focused on the continued development of GOTR’s IDEA program. In particular, GOTR is focused on reaching girls from underserved communities, promoting a culture of inclusion across the organization, building a culturally competent curriculum and increasing local resources in key communities.

Local councils will use the funds to diversify their coaching staff, increase program access for girls of color and further enhance programming that acknowledges the needs and realities of their communities. Funds will also

go to strengthening the organization’s core programming and training while supporting sustainability across local councils, many of which are still recovering from the impacts of COVID-19.

The partnership between Healthy Futures and GOTR was established in 2020, with an initial grant of $1 million supporting programming during the pandemic. The 2020 grant contributed to GOTR’s swiftly adapting services and programming to serve girls meaningfully and safely during the pandemic.

Together with donors, Rite Aid associates, community partners and neighbors, Rite Aid Healthy Futures, formerly known as the Rite Aid Foundaion, has donated more than $15 million a year to causes, initiatives and organizations that make a difference in people’s lives. Visit www.RiteAidHealthyFutures.org to learn more.

Arts festival to include organ recital

As a part of the Lancaster Summer Arts Festival, the Lancaster Chapter of the American Guild of Organists (AGO) will host a free recital at the First United Methodist Church, 29 E. Walnut St., Lancaster, on Thursday, June 8, at 7 p.m. Local organists will play the expanded and refurbished 1959 Moller pipe organ to raise funds for AGO’s scholarship efforts. For over 50 years, the Lancaster Chapter’s members have offered their talents in this concert for the benefit of the community and to provide scholarships for young people to take organ lessons.

Music selections will range from some of the earliest works of J.S. Bach to recent works by American composers. In addition to performances by Deborah Berdos, Joy Ide, Margaret Marsch, Frank Dodd, Christopher Prestia, Ross Ellison, and host organist

Peter Omundsen, the fatherdaughter duet of Drs. Karl and Cindy Moyer will perform Josef Rheinberger’s “Adagio and Fugue.” The concert will close with Ross Ellison performing Max Reger’s great “Introduction and Fugue in D minor.”

One scholarship winner, Tyler Velkley, will perform César Franck’s “Prelude, Fugue, and Variation.” Tyler studies with Murray Foreman and will major in organ and church music in college this fall. Gregory Gehman, organist of Muddy Creek Evangelical Lutheran Church, is dean of the chapter.

Parking can be found in the

lot between the church and Lemon Street. A freewill offering will be received to support the Guild’s scholarship funds, which provide scholarships for young people to take organ lessons.

For more details, contact the Guild’s publicity chairman, Kyle Postlethwait, at kyle.p@comcast.net or visit www.lancasterago.org.
