On Saturday, June 1, the Mastersonville Fire Company will host a building dedication and open house for the community from 9 a.m. to noon at its new building, located at 2121 Meadow View Road, Manheim. The building dedication will begin at 9 a.m. with various elected officials offering remarks. Pennsylvania State Fire Commissioner Bruce Trego, Sen. Ryan Aument, County Commissioner Joshua Parsons, Mount Joy Township Supervisor Debra Dupler, and Rapho Township Supervisor Lowell Fry are among those scheduled to attend. “We had some outstanding donors, especially for the three flagpoles since that was an unbudgeted item, and we will acknowledge them, too,” said Mastersonville Fire Company president
Matt Shenk. Following the dedication, visitors are welcome to take self-guided tours of the new building. Firefighters will be on hand to answer questions. Free refreshments and educational displays will be set up inside the fire station as well. Mastersonville Fire Company is 100% volunteer with about 25 active members. It primarily serves 23 square miles in Rapho and Mount Joy townships. The fire company moved into the new 12,586-square-foot building on June 25, 2018. Construction for the project had started in May 2017. The new building allows for all of the equipment to be stored under one roof for the first time. “We no longer have equipment in a back garage,” said Shenk. “We now have storage space and room to work and maintain the apparatus See Fire Company pg 11

Taste Of Lititz from pg 1 This year’s Taste of Lititz will feature up to 30 restaurants, cafes, and other eateries from within the 17543 ZIP code offering samples of a variety of tasty fare for purchase on Friday, June 7, from 5 to 9 p.m. In addition, demonstrations by local artisans, live music, and a silent auction featuring original artwork will be part of the event, which will close Main Street from Broad Street to Water and Cedar streets. Among the array of foods that will be available in sample-size portions will be kettle corn, tomato pie, poppers, tostados, crab pretzel sliders, pizza, and barbecue sandwiches. Beverage items will include iced coffee and tea, a variety of flavored waters, and more. Among the dessert items will be cupcakes; a chocolate, caramel, and pretzel combination known as Lititz Bark; and ice cream. DeKarske noted that the samples provided for purchase should whet attendees’ appetites for more so that they consider visiting the restaurants of origin. Organizers have invited a number of musical guests to perform at the event. The Warwick High School jazz band will return, and the Lititz Community Band will play. In addition, The Mockingbird Duo, a popular local band, and Deb Olsen’s Band, which plays a mix of rock, will both perform. “The Hooley dancers will be here doing Irish step dance,” noted DeKarske. A silent auction, including artwork donated by local artists, will be held in front of the Lititz Post Office, located at 74 E. Main St. This year, in addition to artwork, the auction will feature tickets to local beverage fests and to the Fourth of July celebration held in Lititz Springs Park. DeKarske noted one of the large Edison bulbs that can be seen hanging in

the trees in Lititz will also be included in the silent auction. Area artisans demonstrating their crafts will be located throughout the thoroughfare of the event. “There will be a potter, woodworking, letterpress printing, and a rug maker,” noted DeKarske. Last year, a number of area nonprofit organizations hosted games and other activities for children. This year, representatives of local churches, including church youth groups, have joined that number. “There will be a ring toss, a giant Jenga game, and tabletop board games for people to play,” said DeKarske, who added that a few original games will be in the mix and a balloon animal artist will be on-site. The Warwick High School bowling team will give attendees a chance to bowl on Cedar Street. The Young Men’s Business Club will host a game, and the group will also hold a chicken-and-egg race in the stream at the park. “(The organization) is raising money for scholarships and a capital campaign for (the group’s) building,” said DeKarske. Venture Lititz is a recognized Main Street Program working to support economic vitality in the Lititz area. Funds raised by Taste of Lititz will help to support community programs organized by Venture Lititz. Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1905 Broad St., East Petersburg, will host an organ dedication concert on Saturday, June 1, at 7 p.m. The program will showcase the church’s new Allen digital organ and will include a variety of music, including classic organ works, as well as several new pieces composed by the featured organist Wayne L. Wold. Wold is professor, organist, and chair of the music department at Hood College in Frederick, Md. He also serves as director of music at First Lutheran Church of Ellicott City, Md., and is active as a recitalist, clinician, author, and composer. From 1996 to 2013, he served as director of chapel music at Camp David, the presidential retreat. He has performed solo recitals across the U.S. and in Europe, and he leads numerous hymn festivals. He has performed with the Maryland Symphony Orchestra, the Frederick Symphony Orchestra, and other ensembles. More than 350 of Wold’s compositions are in print and include works for organ, choirs, instruments, and congregation. Wold serves as councillor for the Mid-Atlantic Region of the
Department of Parks and Recreation; “North Museum’s Mission to the Moon”; and the Princess of Dutch Wonderland. New for 2019 is Summer Fitness Quest, a physical activity program for youths and family members. Beginning June 1, libraries will have Summer Fitness Quest booklets to extend learning and to help children ages 5 to 9 to develop an appreciation for the outdoors. The program supports free opportunities for children and adults to visit and enjoy Lancaster County parks and trails as well as Lancaster Conservancy nature preserves. Emily Leibley of Manheim was inducted to Phi Alpha Theta honor society this spring at Lebanon Valley College, Annville. A graduate of Manheim Central High School, Leibley is pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in politics and history. Phi Alpha Theta is a history national honor society that requires its members to have a department GPA of at least 3.1 and a college GPA of at least 3.0. Additionally, any potential members must have completed at least 12 history credits, though membership is not limited to history majors.

Public libraries of Lancaster County and the Bookmobile will present this year’s Summer Reading Program, “A Universe of Stories.” The 2019 countywide reading program will begin on Saturday, June 1, and run until Saturday, Aug. 10. Asked about the atmosphere at the annual Lititz Area Mennonite School (LAMS) benefit auction, Jennifer Samara, director of elementary education at the school, noted that the student reaction to the event stands out to her. “The students love it,” said Samara. Auction organizer Karen Burkholder added that people of all ages enjoy the event. “The day is like a big, fun family reunion with lots of food, meeting friends, and working together to raise money for an awesome school,” she said. The 2019 auction will be held on Friday, May 31, and Saturday, June 1, at LAMS, 1050 E. Newport Road, Lititz. The auction will kick off at 4 p.m. on May 31 with the traditional Down Home Dinner, which will include a choice of roast beef or chicken, gourmet cheesy potatoes, green beans, fruit, a dinner roll with butter, and a whoopie pie for dessert. The dinner will be served until 7 p.m. Takeout meals will be available along with the eat-in option. Auctions on May 31 will include a student auction, which will begin at 5:45 p.m., and the main auction, which will begin at 6:15 p.m. A selection of theme baskets will go over the block at 7:30 p.m., and gift certificates will be sold at 8 p.m. On June 1, an all-you-can-eat buffet breakfast featuring eggs, sausage, pancakes, baked oatmeal, home fries, fresh fruit, pastries, juice, milk, and coffee will be available for purchase beginning at 6 a.m. Breakfast will be served until 9:30 a.m., at which time barbecued chicken legs and thighs will be sold. The chicken barbecue will continue until 1:30 p.m. or until the chicken is sold out. Some of the other food items that will be available for
purchase are pork barbecue sandwiches, sausage sandwiches, salad, baked goods, and softserve ice cream. Two separate auctions will begin at 8:30 a.m. on June 1. The general auction will be held inside the school, and the landscape auction, which will feature a variety of plants and flowers, will be held outside under a tent. At 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., the general auction will feature theme baskets, and at 11 a.m., a men’s auction, including hunting and fishing gear, archery equipment, and brandname coffee mugs, will take place on the main stage. At noon, the special features auction will commence. For

Go Red Luncheon from pg 1 More than 100 women from across Lancaster County gathered at the Lancaster Country Club on May 3 to raise awareness and funds in support of women’s heart health at the Lancaster Go Red for Women Luncheon. The event raised more than $250,000 for the American Heart Association (AHA). The event celebrated the 15th anniversary of the AHA’s Go Red for Women movement by encouraging women not only to wear red to raise awareness of heart disease in women, but also to take action to reduce their personal risk factors and work toward healthier communities. Megan Orr, registered dietitian with UPMC Pinnacle, presented a lecture on heart-healthy eating tips as part of a heart disease risk-reduction plan. Attendees also listened to Doriana Musselman of Lancaster talk about life as the caregiver of her 2-year-old son, Emmett Musselman, who was born with a congenital heart defect that required his first of three open
heart surgeries when he was 32 hours old. Doriana discussed her son’s surgeries and recovery, the stress it put on their family and the importance of keeping the entire family heart-healthy so they can enjoy more time together. Sue Keyser of WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital received the Go Red for Women Friend of Heart award for more than 15 years of volunteer service. The event, hosted by radio personality Lisa Landis-Blowers, also included a silent auction, a mini manicure station provided by the Lancaster School of Cosmetology, and a heart-healthy lunch. Event co-chairs included Elizabeth Eschbach, cardiology supervisor with UPMC Pinnacle, and Stacey Hankey, chief executive officer of Lanco Federal Credit Union. Honduras Mission Slated This summer, several youths and young adults will have the opportunity to work on coffee farms high in the mountains of the Intibuca region of Honduras or minister in the urban setting of Chamalecon on the outskirts of San Pedro Sula. Eastern Mennonite Missions (EMM) and VidaNet are partnering together for a four-week summer discipleship training experience called Go! Honduras. In a team setting, individuals ages 16 to 21 will have two weeks of classroom and experiential discipleship training followed by two weeks of outreach - from Friday, July 5, to Thursday, July 18 - in Honduras. Orientation will begin on Friday, June 21, in Akron, and participants will
arrive in Honduras by Monday, June 24. Participants will nurture their own relationships with Jesus by interacting with themes such as Christlike relationships, Holy Spirit empowerment, intimacy with God, biblical truth, evangelism and compassion, the church and the kingdom, world missions, and dying to self and living for Christ. Dayspring Christian Academy senior Kara Russo of Lancaster was awarded the Salvation Army’s Olga Ruth Stratton Scholarship and Thomas Wolf Scholarship during a recent ceremony. Russo was one of 15 recipients of the Salvation Army’s Olga Ruth Scholarship. Of those 15 recipients, she was one of two who also earned the Thomas Wolf Scholarship. Applicants must write an essay outlining their aspirations in college, how they have served in their community, and their plans after college. Along with this essay, applicants were required to send in at least two letters of recommendation in reference to their community service and academics. Requirements also included having at least a 2.5 GPA; having been accepted to a college, university, or trade school; and needing higher education financial assistance. Additionally,

Barons Top LD In District Volleyball Semifinals By Eric G. Stark
Up two games and leading 24-23, Craig Dietrich was taking nothing for granted. With sweat rolling down his face, the Manheim Central boys’ volleyball coach called timeout and then wiped his face with a towel. His players, up against Lower Dauphin, huddled around him Wednesday, May 22 at Hempfield High School for one last encouraging word. “‘Hey, let’s just see if we can keep weathering the storm, see if we can side out right away, first ball, right away,’” he told his troops. After the break, the Falcons served and Barons’ senior Brandyn Musser
hammered down a kill to clinch the game and the match for Manheim in the District Three Class 2A semifinals. The 3-0 win against LD came from game scores of 25-22, 25-15 and 2523 and put the Barons back in the district finals for the second straight year. They faced York Suburban in the district finals Friday (this result was too late for deadline this week). Deitrich said the key to the win against LD was consistency. His squad had less swing errors and “I thought we were clutch when we needed to be,” he said. He also looked relieved and satisfied after the victory. Win or lose, the Barons qualified for the state tournament, but the feeling after winning in the semis is a lot better, he said.
They are going to the prom and they like their dance partner. “I think this is the hard one to get through because it is either exhilaration or you are in that third place match,” Deitrich said about the district semis. “It’s like you are glad you are going somewhere, but it is also you want to come to the dance and dance with that girl and now we are dancing with that girl.” Manheim, which won the Lancaster-Lebanon League Section Two title for the third straight year - not dropping a game in league-play
for three years - has accomplished a lot during a season many took them for granted. “They all feel good,” Deitrich said about competing for another championship, “but this one is really about a team that I don’t think anybody really believed in or respected. I don’t think we got a lot of respect for how we came about our season and we’ve laid a little bit low. “But it is funny when you don’t lose a game in the section for three years. That’s pretty hard to do, and you break in three new starters and
lose three All-State players. This one feels pretty special, and again, no one believed in us, and yet, here we are.” They are playing their best volleyball now and got back to the finals because they bought into their coach’s philosophy. “Coach kind of established from the beginning of the season that this is going to be Mason and Brayden’s team to help lead and help coach and all the guys, even Ben (Wolford), being a senior and equal with us, they are listening and heeding our teachings and we’ve grown from it,” said Mason Nissley, the senior All-Stater who had 24 kills against LD. “Now they know what they need to do and we don’t have to tell them anymore and it’s great.” “It’s no secret, its Mason’s team,” Deitrich said. “The other two seniors, we can rely on, and we can get contributions from the others. That’s why we are in the finals.” Nissley has a calming effect with his play and his voice. LD led by three midway through the first game, but Nissley reassured his teammates and the Barons went
on an 8-0 run that appeared to snap the spirit of the Falcons, who had a lot of errors throughout the match. “I think it set the tone,” Deitrich said about that run. “I think, to use a fight analogy, we were both throwing punches for about the first 20 points of the game, and then all of a sudden we kept punching and they were on their heels a bit, and that kind of set the tone for how we wanted to attack.” The Barons jumped out 4-0 in Game Two and the Falcons would get no closer than 14-10. The third game, featuring 12 ties, was close, but the Barons made plays they needed. Jeremiah Zimmerman had three aces and 33 assists. Manheim (15-2) advanced to the semis after defeating Hershey 25-18, 25-22, 24-26, 25-16 in the quarterfinals Monday, May 20. Nissley led the charge with 26 kills and three aces. In cooperation with the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture, Lancaster County Office of Aging will begin distributing 2019 Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program vouchers to eligible people on Wednesday, June 5. The nutrition vouchers can be exchanged for Pennsylvaniagrown fruits and vegetables through November at participating farmers markets and roadside stands. To be eligible, an individual must be at least 60 years of age, reside in Lancaster County, and have an annual household income of less than $22,311 for one person or less than $30,044 for two. Gwendolyn M. Ruth Dickinson will share a presentation on her recollection of her grandfather, William Chester Ruth, as a creative mechanic and spiritual and family leader. The presentation will be followed by a light lunch and then a talk by Dr. Leroy Hopkins, retired Millersville University professor. Hopkins will present historical context for the Lancaster and Chester county area as a place of tolerance and opportunity. Born in Chester County, Ruth moved by the early 20th century to Gap, where he had a blacksmith and machine shop. The son of a South Carolina slave, he was by the early 1920s a wellknown and capable blacksmith to Amish, Mennonite, and other farm families of eastern Lancaster and western Chester counties. His genius for solving mechanical problems led him to design and patent a machine

Entrance for the firefighters is from the side of the building so that the firefighters no longer need to walk in front of the apparatus when they arrive for a call. The apparatus now has more than two inches of clearance when it pulls out of the station, Shenk noted. Plus, the building is well-lit with automatic sensors that turn themselves on and off both inside and outside. Other new features include non-slip floors, washing machines to remove dirt and cancer-causing particles from fire gear, a ventilation system to remove carbon monoxide when the apparatus is started within the building, and a generator to keep the station running when the power goes out. The station is also equipped with a modern training room with A/V equipment to help the firefighters train and prepare for emergencies. In addition to the building dedication and open house, a Mastersonville Fire Company fundraiser is set to take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 15, in the Barn & Barrel area on the grounds of Mount Hope Estate & Winery, 2775 Lebanon Road, Manheim. Admission is free for the familyfriendly event, which will feature live music, children’s games, giveaways and door prizes, food, a beverage release, and more. Museum Adds New Programs North Museum of Nature and Science, 400 College Ave., Lancaster, will expand its early childhood programs to include Little Explorer and Me, STEM Story Time, and Preschool Picassos: Merging Art and Science. All of these programs are intended for children ages 2 to 5. Little Explorer and Me will meet on the last Wednesday and Saturday of every month from 10 a.m. to noon and will provide educational activities for preschool-age children in the museum’s Nature Gallery. Elizabethtown Mennonite To Host Open House By Chelsea Peifer
To celebrate the completion of its new addition and remodel, Elizabethtown Mennonite Church, 300 S. Spruce St., Elizabethtown, would like to invite the community to an open house. The drop-in event will take place from 2 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, June 2. Visitors will have the opportunity to tour the building and view a slide presentation showing the progress of the building project from its groundbreaking in May 2018 to its completion in January 2019. Soft-serve ice cream and other free refreshments will be available, as well as children’s activities. Stations will be set up throughout the church highlighting activities and programs such as the youth group, the Sewing Circle, a men’s exercise program, Women of God’s Word (WOW), Lunch in the Park, and more. About five years ago the church board briefly considered moving out of its downtown location because of the seemingly limited options for expansion due to how landlocked the location was. “But
the vote from the board was unanimous: No, we are going to stay in town because we’re called to the community,” pastor Conrad Kanagy recalled. “As I watched the congregation envision the addition, I really sensed it was to expand our ministry not just for ourselves, but for the community.” Lead trustee Paul Swanger said from there a plan to simply renovate the existing structure was considered; however, the limited space in the original kitchen along with a few other factors led to the decision to remodel the entire existing building and put on an addition. Along with Swanger, the Building Committee for the project included chair Lester Landis, Elvin Boll, Kate Ebersole, Steve Keener, Ron Kratz, and Don Miller. Seating capacity in the sanctuary was expanded to accommodate 213 people, and the wooden benches were replaced with chairs. The addition included a multipurpose room as well as new offices and a ministry room. Aside from all of the physical changes to the building, Kanagy
explained that the church recently transitioned from a professional ministry model to calling forth ministers from within the congregation into using their giftings in the areas of worship, outreach, children, youths, and discipleship. Instead of having full-time salaried staff, each designated minister serves part-time and receives a small stipend. “It has created a lot of energy. Our goal is to have a pipeline of ministry so that everyone is involved and mentoring someone,” continued Kanagy. “We’re also working at lowering the barriers between the church and the community.” Kanagy noted that when Elizabethtown Mennonite Church formed in 1905, the congregation was a unique mix of long-term Mennonites and folks who lived in the town and came to accept Jesus Christ as their Savior during a major revival. “In many ways, that mix is still present today. God uses that mix to keep breathing life and to create a lot of stability,” said Kanagy. “There’s a sense of God’s movement in leading our

Steve Deck, chair of the Long’s Park Summer Music Series committee, said that the group had a specific goal in mind when choosing performers for this year’s schedule. “Getting more music everybody knows was key,” said Deck. “This year we will have several bands that will play more familiar music.” With that aim in mind, the committee has lined up an Eagles tribute band, an evening of Beatles tunes, and a celebration of Woodstock among a number of other musical presentations for the organization’s summer season, which will run from Sunday, June 2, through Sunday, Aug. 25. All concerts will be held in Long’s Park, 1441 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster, beginning at 7:30 p.m., rain or shine. Most concerts will be on Sundays, but three Saturday night concerts will also be included in this year’s lineup. According to Deck, the series will kick off with the June 2 concert, which will feature John McEuen, one of the founders of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. “He is
Celtic band Réalta will join a lineup of a variety of musical groups to play at Long’s Park as part of the Long’s Park Summer Music Series. This year, the Long’s Park Amphitheater Foundation will emphasize familiar tunes, with a tribute weekend scheduled in June. very engaging and will be great for the crowd,” said Deck. The second week of the Summer Music Series has been dubbed “tribute weekend,” according to Deck. “Come and hear songs you know and like to sing along to,” he said. On Saturday, June 8, local artist Corty Byron will play Beatles tunes in a “Post White Album” show, and on Sunday, June 9, Seven Bridges, a nationally touring Eagles tribute band, will take to the park stage. Another June show will feature Allegro, which will return for a Father’s Day performance on Sunday, June 16. Gospel and soul singer Liz Vice will bring her indie rock-infused sounds to the park on Sunday, June 23, and the United States Army Band “Pershing’s Own” will play a patriotic concert on Sunday, June 30, in conjunction with a fireworks display to celebrate Independence Day. The first concert of July will feature Nooky Jones, which Deck called a “hip” band, noting that it
should attract a young crowd. The group will perform in the amphitheater on Sunday, July 7. On Saturday, July 13, Matches, a local band with a sound Deck noted is reminiscent of Tower of Power or Chicago, will play. The Sunday, July 14, band, MINAS, was chosen in response to suggestions made on the music series’ website. The Brazilian couple plays Latin-flavored music with an expanded appeal. “They have a wonderful sound,” said Deck, who described MINAS as bossa nova. “It’s very danceable without being hard driving,” he said. “It’s bring-someoneto-dance-with kind of music.” Lachy Doley, a Hammond organ player who is visiting from Australia, will play on Sunday, July 21. “He is the Jimi Hendrix of the Hammond organ. He pounds away,” said Deck. July will finish up with Celtic band Réalta on Sunday, July 28. The Sunday, Aug. 4, concert will feature Danny Kortchmar and Friends, studio musicians known
for backing up Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, and others. “They will play lots of familiar music,” said Deck. On Sunday, Aug. 11, country music singer Phil Vassar will play at the park. “His songs are very Americana country,” said Deck. On Saturday, Aug. 17, a special event highlighting the 50th anniversary of Woodstock will feature local artists and more well-known songs. The Sunday, Aug. 18, concert will feature blues artist Davy Knowles, and the season will conclude on Aug. 25 with the Cajun-flavored sounds of Terrance Simien and Zydeco Experience. “He is very engaging and a big crowd pleaser,” shared Deck.
