Hands-on celebration will mark 25 years of watershed work

Reminding us that “we all live downstream,” the Chiques Creek Watershed Alliance (CCWA) will mark its 25th year with a community celebration at the site of its key past projects.

Lunch & Learn at Rife Run will be held on Saturday, June 7, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Mummau Park, 446-498 Chestnut St., Manheim. A rain date is scheduled for the same time on Saturday, June 14.

“We wanted to try something

new and focused on hands-on learning about some key watershed-related themes targeted towards elementary to middle school ages,” explained Paul Duncan, president of CCWA, who noted that the event will highlight the group’s projects at both Mummau and Logan parks.

The event’s schedule will feature themes that appeal to people who are interested in the technical side of environmental stewardship, as well as people who want to indulge in some watershed arts activities.

“Some take interest in the

technical understanding and others in the beauty of the natural experience,” Duncan said.

The event also offers an opportunity for CCWA to collaborate with other groups who share its vision, including Lancaster Conservancy. The event will be part of that organization’s Water Week, which will run from Friday, June 6, through Saturday, June 14.

“We are also thrilled that some students and their adviser from the Manheim Central High School FFA Club will help at the event,” Duncan stated.

Seventeen members of Salem United Methodist Church in Manheim will head to West Virginia this July for the church’s 43rd annual Appalachia Service Project (ASP) mission trip. The long-standing tradition focuses on improving living conditions in the Appalachian region by making homes warmer, safer and drier, said Doug Winters, who is organizing the event.

This year’s mission team will include Doug, along with Mark Heller, Chris Trovinger, Charlie Winters, Gareth Wright, Uri Almoneda, Lucy Bucher, Madison Brady, Valerie Bucher, Angela Byus, Ben Heller, Jacob Kalicicki, Jeff Morris, Sam Rice, Jim Stouch, Adelynne Trovinger and Brynn Trovinger.

“Some of the physical work that’s done ranges from drywall, painting, insulation, roofing, stairs, ramps, foundation repair and plumbing,” Doug shared,

Earlier this year, Meagan Caterbone was scrolling through social media when a post caught her eye. It encouraged teachers to apply to become America’s Favorite Teacher through a competition sponsored by Reader’s Digest and Bill Nye.

“I thought it might be fake, but then I thought it couldn’t hurt to apply,” recalled the Donegal

School District orchestra teacher.

“I filled it out thinking, ‘This isn’t going to go anywhere.’”

She was wrong.

From that initial entry, Meagan kept progressing, round after round, through the contest, which promoted entrants based on the number of votes they earned online from friends and family.

“I kept winning each round, and eventually, my husband

but he emphasized that the impact of the trip goes far beyond construction. “There’s also wonderful friendships that are made with the homeowners in this region that last long after the physical work is done.”

To support the trip, the ASP team will host a Strawberry Sundae Talent Show fundraiser on Sunday, June 1, at Salem United Methodist Church, located at 140 N. Penn St., Manheim. From 4 to 6 p.m., guests are invited to create

their own strawberry sundaes using fresh-picked strawberries gathered by members of the ASP team. Following the sundae social, a talent show will take place at 6:30 p.m. in the church sanctuary.

The talent show will feature a range of musical performances from both individuals and groups in the community. Scheduled performers include Laurel Carter, who will play the flute; Josslyn Swinehart on cello; Ben Winters,

who will perform on piano; the Salem Church bell choir; Tim Hoffman, who will perform a vocal solo; Tom Breneisen, who will sing and play guitar; Luana Baltozer and Katie Yoder, who will offer a piano duet; Mandy Sheetz, who will play the cello; and Joyce Drake and Jack Rutt, who will perform a piano and cello duet.

Over the decades, members of Salem United Methodist Church have supported a wide variety

of people and projects through ASP. In 2023, the group traveled to Prestonsburg, Ky., to complete repair work needed after severe flooding in the region. Last year, the team worked in Fayette County, W.Va.

Admission to the event is by donation, and all proceeds will go toward supporting the team’s mission work in Appalachia. For more information on Salem United Methodist Church, visit https://salemmanheim.org.

In 2016, Bill Terry was attending a local craft show when a T-shirt someone was wearing caught his eye.

“I saw it said something about a Navy Ship Club, and I asked about it,” recalled the Navy veteran. “I said, ‘Where do you meet?’ I learned more about the club and thought, ‘Yeah, I can do this. It could be fun.’”

Now almost a decade later, Terry is among the dwindling number of club members. He and the other active participants are hoping more veterans will step up to join Navy Club Ship 166.

“Our club is open to anyone who goes to sea - Navy, Marines, Coast Guard personnel,” Terry said. “We’re

looking for people who are interested in participating in car shows and community parades.”

At one time, the club boasted more than 100 members. Today, about 15 people are in the group, with four or five members doing the lion’s share of the work.

“All of us in the club are Vietnam-era veterans,”Terry said, noting that he served beginning in 1970, right out of high school. “We’re desperately looking for others to join us, maybe some younger veterans especially.”

Terry estimates that the club members participate in almost

20 parades from April through November, including the Memorial Day parades in Mount Joy, Manheim and Columbia. The group also participates in the Taste of Mount Joy Cruisin’ Cuisine Car Show and Thunder on the River in Columbia. Whenever the group appears in public, the members like to make a splash.

“Someone had donated a large fishing boat to the club, which we got painted in battleship gray,” Terry said. “We deck it all out for parades, with LED lights around it, and we have wooden 20-millimeter

shared it to some of the community pages we’re part of,” Meagan explained. “It felt really weird for me to share the post and say, ‘Vote for me,’ but I did, and it really started snowballing from there.”

By April, Meagan had advanced to the top 10 and then top five in her group.

“I made it to the quarterfinals and then the semifinals,” she said. “There was a total of seven rounds to determine the winner, and I made it to the sixth round.”

Although Meagan was eventually eliminated from the competition, she’s still proud of how far she went.

“It was a great opportunity to talk about Donegal,” she said. “I feel like there are a lot of great things happening that people have no idea about, especially in our very small school district. I wanted to shine as much light on Donegal as I could.”

She was hoping to bring home the grand prize of $25,000 and a trip to Hawaii.

“It was the idea of the trip to Hawaii that really prompted me to enter,” she said. “I’ve never been on a plane in my life, and this would have been a chance to take a free trip.”

She was hoping it could be the honeymoon she and Patrick, her husband of almost 10 years, never had a chance to take.

She also loved the idea of the contest promoting education and providing opportunities for students to explore science.

Another prize for the winner was a virtual school assembly with Bill Nye, affectionately known as “The Science Guy.”

Meagan, a graduate of Manheim Central High School, Lebanon Valley College and Kent State University, has been teaching since 2011. She’s been with Donegal School District since 2014, where she currently instructs students in grades four through 12.

“I really love helping people learn about themselves, especially in my subject area, music,” she said. “It gives students a sense of belonging, a creative outlet, being a part of something that is so much bigger than themselves. It teaches grit, perseverance, collaboration. There are so many things wrapped up into music, and I just love being able to share that with kids of all ages.”

Meagan comes from a very musical family. When asked what instrument she plays, she didn’t hesitate to answer: “All of them.”

She started playing the piano at age 3 and began learning violin at age 9.

“I was the band director for eight years for Donegal, and I just recently switched to teaching all strings,” she said.

Youths who attend the event should be prepared for hands-on fun, he said.

“Kids can expect to do things,” he noted. “They will be able to shape watersheds using a modeling dough and take the dough home, test different ways of seeing the energy of moving water and how to mitigate it - a theme that is built into the renovations at these parks - (and) see some of the tests and data used to determine stream quality.”

Participants can also play a quiz game aimed at critical thinking on watershed topics, with a tasty prize as a reward for playing; try their hand at sketching or watercolor painting; or, for younger kids, make an insect from craft supplies; and test their powers of observation in an I Spy tour along the riparian buffer at the parks.

“(There is) a special reward for those that complete the I Spy,” Duncan shared. “Kids and their adults-in-tow can also expect a fun lunch provided by CCWA at no cost.”

Eye Drop fundraiser

VisionCorps will hold its Eye Drop 2025 fundraiser on Friday, June 6, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Participants will rappel 10 stories - 120 feet - from the roof to the ground of the Holiday Inn Lancaster, 26 E. Chestnut St., Lancaster.

The event will raise money for services for people who are blind or vision impaired in Adams, Chester, Lancaster, Lebanon, and York counties. This year, VisionCorps hopes to bring the total amount of funds raised over the six years of the event to $1 million.

To reserve a rappel spot, contact Carol Gifford at cgifford@visioncorps .net or 215-872-9239. For more information about VisionCorps, visit https://visioncorps.net/.

hot dogs with condiments and toppings, grilled veggie burgers, cookies and lemonade. Because there is no registration required, the food and activity materials will be available while supplies last.

And while the activities are targeted toward elementary- and middleschool-age children, adults will enjoy the event, too, he said.

“Parents might take an interest as well, in particular seeing how the concepts demonstrated in the activities have been implemented in the parks,” he remarked.

This is the first time CCWA is holding an event like this, but the group hopes it will continue in the future.

“We wanted these activities to be portable, so that if successful, we could bring them to other events or classrooms if invited,” Duncan said.

Hosting the event at the site of CCWA project work provides a unique setting where attendees can see progress in action.

“Some CCWA volunteers have spent many hours over the winter clearing some enshrouding vines from some trees and bushes within the riparian buffer at Mummau Park, with borough permission,” Duncan said. “Kids will be able to see an experiment we are running, comparing one side of the Rife Run,

where this work was done, with the other side of Rife Run, where it was not done. Kind of a neat experiment with pretty dramatic visual impact. And we’ll complete the work next winter.”

machine guns that are mounted like they would be on a ship. We also have two things that appear to be torpedoes on the side of the boat. It’s set up to look like what a PT (Patrol, Torpedo) boat would have had.”

The club members also play recorded patriotic songs and military anthems through speakers to provide extra entertainment during parades.

When club members participate in a parade, they especially enjoy interacting with the crowd.

“We’ll be standing in the boat, and we will scan the crowd, looking for folks wearing a hat or anything that indicates they served,” Terry said. “We’ll point right at that person, give them a salute and say, ‘Welcome home.’ We want to make sure no soldier is ever forgotten.”

The club raises funds for its activities through the sale of custom T-shirts. Each features caricatures of the mascots associated with each military branch.

The Navy Club of the United States was authorized by Congress in 1940. Local clubs are assigned a number in the national organization, corresponding to a PT boat number. The Lancaster club is named for PT 166, which was designed and built during World War II. It was sunk off the Solomon Islands in 1943.

Terry, who lives in East Hempfield Township, emphasized that the club is open to any veteran of the Navy, Marines or Coast Guard in central Pennsylvania.

“Come to a meeting and see what we’re all about,” he said. “We charge yearly dues, but for first-time members, we waive that if they participate in three activities during the year.”

The club meets at 7 p.m. on the first Monday of the month, unless it’s a holiday, at the Mount Joy VFW, 125 Longenecker Road, Mount Joy.

Terry underscored the emotions of participating in a parade where he has a chance to represent his country and showcase his service.

“Even little kids, like 5 or 6 years old into teenagers, some of them will stand up and salute you,” he said. “That just tugs at your heart.”

For more information, contact Terry by calling or texting 562-896-0824.
