Honoring the fallen
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
TheManheim VFW Post 5956Cyrus R. Peters Memorial Post and Auxiliary invite you to observe Memorial Day in Manheim. The remembrance will begin with a parade starting at 10 a.m. on Monday, May 29. It will kick off on Memorial Drive and will head west on High Street, north on Main Street and east on Gramby Street before returning to Memorial Park. The parade will include members of the Pennsylvania National Guard, several local fire departments, the Mount Joy Legion Riders and the Manheim Central High School marching band, along with some of the high school sports teams. Local veterans are invited to walk in the parade as well.
“This parade is a reminder to the Manheim community to pause and reflect upon the true meaning of Memorial Day,” said Craig Fisher, Post 5956 commander. “This day of remembrance was created to honor the millions of brave men and women who died in military service to the United States of America.”
Immediately following the parade, Manheim VFW member William King will direct a ceremony at Memorial Park. The keynote speaker will be Command Sgt. Maj. Charles Trofe, a long-serving member of the Pennsylvania Army National Guard, who is currently with the 1st Battalion, 111th Infantry.
The ceremony will include readings of the winning entries of the local VFW Patriot’s Pen and Voice of Democracy student essay contests, recitation of Lincoln’s
Gettysburg Address, music by the Manheim Central High School band and the playing of taps to honor the fallen. King will continue the tradition of “Meet Our Fallen” by speaking about Ammon Gibble, who was the first Manheim-area resident to be killed in action during World War I.
This year, a highlight of the ceremony will be the official groundbreaking for the new Veterans Memorial Plaza that will be developed in Memorial Park this year. The plaza will honor the service of residents from the Manheim area who served in the military during both peace and wartime. It will include flagpoles for the Army, Marines, Navy, Air Force, Space Force and Coast Guard standards, along with the Merchant Marines of World War II.
To help fund the project, the group is selling engraved bricks that will be placed along the plaza’s Path of Honor. “We are encouraging people to join the ‘Brick Brigade’ by purchasing a brick,” said George Schwartz, who is chairing the project. He noted that there will be a discount on bricks honoring World War II veterans, adding that there were more than 1,000 men and women from the Manheim area who served in World War II. “We’d like to honor all of them, so you don’t have to know somebody who served but you can still dedicate a brick to a World War II veteran,” Schwartz explained. “We have a complete roster, and we can provide people with a name so if they want to purchase a brick in honor of a World War II veteran, they
can do that.” Brick order forms will be available at the Memorial Day ceremony.
“All around our community, we are surrounded by neighbors, coworkers, family, friends and strangers who have lost a loved one
to war,” Fisher remarked. “We all owe a debt of gratitude for those sacrifices, and on this day, we can show our gratitude by keeping fallen service members and those they left behind in our hearts and minds.”

The theme of this year’s Summer Reading Program is “All Together Now,” focusing on friendship, unity and kindness. You can be a part of the fun when Summer Reading kicks off for the Manheim Community Library on Saturday, June 3. The festivities will begin at 10 a.m. at Mummau Park, 446 Chestnut St., Manheim. “We will have a table set up with sign-up sheets for the Summer Reading Program, where people can pick up their reading logs and goodie bags,” said Jes Wagner, community relations coordinator for the library. “There will also be a performance by the juggling duo The DKers.” Wagner noted that this year’s Summer Reading Program is full of a variety of activities. “This year, we have some new reading prizes, such as movie passes to Penn Cinema, but we also have a variety of programs planned for the summer that are focused around building community and friendship,” she remarked. She noted that some of the highlights will include Animal Cahoots, presented by Lancaster Parks and Recreation on Thursday, June 8, at 10 a.m.; a Dinosaur Dig on Wednesday, June 28, at 1 p.m.; and a presentation by Jesse Rothacker from Forgotten Friend Reptile Sanctuary at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 26. “We have a See Library pg 11

Lititz has very good taste
BY JEFF FALK
Lititz is easy on the eyes. Lititz is pleasing to the nose. And do you know what else Lititz is? Delicious.
Taste of Lititz celebrates all things culinary in Lititz, highlighting the locale’s smells and flavors and tastes.
This year’s version of the glorified block party will unfold on Friday, June 2, from 5 to 9 p.m. The downtown business district, or at least three blocks of it, will be closed to car traffic and opened to the taste buds.
During that expanded happy hour, East Main Street from North Broad Street to North Water Street will be partitioned off, and tables will be set up to allow visitors to sample all the delectable wares that downtown Lititz has to offer. The event, which is organized by and sponsored by Venture Lititz, is free to attend, and participants are encouraged to indulge their expanding palates.
“I always try to rotate where I go downtown,” said Venture Lititz executive director Rebecca Branle. “When I’m with someone, I’m always trying to introduce locals to something new. We have so many cool eateries. I think what people don’t realize is how many flavors we have in downtown Lititz. The people who work there are so proud of the food they produce.”
This year, about 35 local restaurants will have food samples available for purchase as part of Taste of Lititz, and while they will serve as the main course, the festive, carnival atmosphere will be garnished with drinks, art, outdoor games geared toward families and live music. It’s all a recipe for fun and fellowship.
“A Taste of Lititz is different in that it’s not super structured,” said Branle. “It’s a cele-
bration, and we’re celebrating Lititz. We have tons of people calling to be involved, and it’s truly a Lititz event. It’s a block party and a get-together, where everyone is like family and we’re expressing how much we love this place.”
After being shut down by the pandemic, Taste of Lititz made a triumphant return in 2022, with a crowd in excess of 3,000 people. Branle said the event is
prepared for even greater numbers this time around.
“I think the vast majority of our visitors come from within the Warwick School District,” said Branle, “but we also get folks from Manheim Township and Ephrata and Manheim Central. It’s nearby visitors who love Lancaster County, who love Lititz.”
“I wanted to make it available to families, regardless of incomes,” continued Branle. “No tickets are required. Just show up and have a great night.”
Of all the events staged in Lititz, Taste of Lititz might be
the most informal - and the tastiest.
“It’s about our local restaurants, our local art and taking little tastes from all the food options we have downtown,” said Branle. “I like to sit back and watch. For me, there’s this sense that I’ve got to pinch myself because I get to work here. You have all these people who are genuinely happy. It’s one of those moments where you get to take stock of how special this place is.”

SPRING INTO LIFE WITH BETTER HEARING
One Day or Day One
Laughter, a crowd cheering, or even a conversation with a friend or loved one helps to shape our lives, adding richness and texture to all our experiences. When hearing works like it should, your brain gets the rich input it needs to understand the sounds around you. But when your brain lacks access to the real sounds of life due to a hearing problem, it’s forced to work harder to fill in the gaps, which can be tiring. In addition, you could miss out on something special.
Are you ready to take the first step towards better hearing? We are here for you to start day one of your journey.

Barons remain perfect with win over Garden Spot
BY ERIC PYLES
One of the biggest goals for most high school sports teams is to finish the season with a victory. As that would mean they hoist a championship trophy as the winner of the title bout.
Manheim Central’s boys’ volleyball team would love to have that chance after falling in the PIAA-2A quarterfinals four years running.
Before Central could get their postseason trek underway they had to finish their 2023 regular season with a trip to New Holland to face Garden Spot on the 11th. The Spartans kept things close but Manheim Central was able to maintain their perfect regular season record with wins of 25-19, 25-17 and 25-21.
Dylan Musser led the way with 24 assists and two blocks with Landon Mattiace matching the two-block game. Logan Groff had six kills and Collin Rohrer 10 digs while Kevin Saengdara chipped in with two aces.
The Barons officially got their post season journey underway on May 15th, topping Cedar Crest 3-2 in the L-L semifinals, setting up a title match with Warwick with Central looking to claim their first L-L crown.
The Falcons and Barons
battled back-and-forth with Central taking game one 2519 only to see Cedar Crest enjoy a 25-22 game two win.
Central put the match within reach thanks to a 25-23 game three win but Crest forced a game five by taking game four 25-19. Manheim Central was able to secure their second finals trip with a 16-14 game five win. Musser finished with 56 assists and Rohrer 21 digs. Add in 15 kills from Logan Groff along with five Toby Frey blocks and two Jacob Moyer aces and you get a 32 win.
B A S E B A L L
One and done is never a phrase you want to hear come playoff time as it means your post season dance was cut short. That is where the Manheim Central baseball team found themselves after a 6-4 setback on May 11th to Lampeter-Strasburg in the quarterfinal round of the Lancaster-Lebanon League Championship.
Central needed four pitchers to work through the seven innings with Cayde Connelly getting the start and taking the loss. He covered the opening four frames and surrendered half of the Pioneer tally while allowing three hits and one walk. Cael Martin took over
in the fifth and was hit with two L-S runs before he could secure an out. That led to Cole Lawhorne taking over and coughing up the final Lampeter-Strasburg run over his two innings. Chase Travitz covered the seventh. Brady Harbach drove in two of the four Central runs using a third inning single that put Manheim up 2-0. Lampeter-Strasburg took the lead in the fourth and never looked back despite a mini-rally in the seventh for Central. That included one run off an L-S balk with a second run coming via Nolan Book’s base hit.
T R A C K & F I E L D
As they do every year, the Manheim Central track and field teams made the short trip to Landisville for the 2023 edition of the Lancaster-Lebanon League Championship Meet, held at Hempfield High School on May 12th and 13th.
For the Lady Barons, the trip was a rousing success with Manheim amassing 87 team points. Unfortunately, that was the second-best total of the weekend, well short of McCaskey’s championship winning 140-point total.
Leading the way was Maddie Knier who medaled in four events. She cleared 5-2 for gold in the high jump
and added silver medal efforts in both the long (181.75) and triple (36-5.5) jumps and claimed bronze with a 129-10 throw of the javelin.
The Lady Barons also occupied six of the 16 total spots on the medal stand. The work of Liz Voegele (46.43), Abbie Reed (46.49) and Makenna Enck (49.285) gave Central a 2nd-3rd and 4th place run in the 300 hurdles.
In the 100 hurdles, it was Reed leading the way with a 15.91, earning her a second bronze. Voegele ran a 16.01 in the final to take sixth place while Kylie Mattiace checked in with a 17.11, good enough for the final spot on the medal stand.
Manheim picked up two more solo medals, the first in the 400m where Milan Snell was one of five runners to crack one minute, finishing fourth with a 59.34. The second solo medal
came in the 800m where freshman Julia Kahler captured eighth with a 2:28.83. The pair manage to pick up a second medal for their work in a relay. Kahler joined Sarah Forry, Reagan Ibach and Julie Lindberg in the 3200m relay, their 9:51.38 good enough to take bronze. Manheim’s final medal came as a fifth-place version in the 1600m relay
with the quartet of Reed, Voegele, Forry and Snell posting a 4:11.76.
On the boy’s side of things, just one Baron was able to enjoy a trip to the medal stand. Landon McGallicher collected two silver medals while in Landisville. The first was for his 14.91 in the 110 hurdles, with the second for his 39.52 in the 300’s.

Mulberry Art Studios to present exhibit
JJ Roach, who first debuted his artworks in a solo show at Mulberry Art Studios two years ago at age 17, will return to the studio in June to showcase his newest collection of art, titled “Surreal Detail.” The public is invited to meet the artist and view the artworks at a First Friday opening reception on June 2 from 5 to 9 p.m. Mulberry Art Studios, located at 21 N. Mayfest ceremony honors longtime Maytown couple
Maytown’s annual Mayfest event, held on May 6 in the historic town as well as at Lloyd H. Fuhrman Memorial Park, featured a number of activities and programs. One highlight was an afternoon marriage ceremony featuring the vow renewals of longtime Maytown residents Don and Marilyn Geib, both wearing period attire for the occasion.
The Geibs were high school sweethearts who met in the library at Donegal High School their junior year. At Donegal, Don was a football player and Marilyn was a cheerleader. Don and Marilyn married on Aug. 8, 1959. They moved into their Maytown home the following year and still reside there. Their pride and joy is
spending time with their family and investing in their community, in which they have been active members for more than 60 years. Their community involvements include volunteering for their church and participating in Meals on Wheels weekly. They have also served on the local water authority for more than 40 years. The Geibs are known
for being a giving couple, and they are beloved by their neighbors and friends.

variety of magicians coming throughout the summer as well, including one only at Manheim Community Library,” Wagner shared. “Ridiculous Nicholas will be here on (Thursday) July 13 at 10 a.m.”
W agner underscored the importance of the Summer Reading Program, adding, “Summer Reading is more than reading a few books and collecting your prizes. It’s a way to stay connected with your friends over the summer by coming to fun programs.”
It also helps students retain information learned over the previous school year, she said. “By completing the challenges, it keeps your brain sharp for learning the next school year,”
she commented. “It encourages kids, as well as adults, to pick up a book and read or to visit the library when the summer boredom kicks in. Summer Reading helps to prevent the ‘summer slide,’ so that they are ready for the next school year.”
Wagner noted this year’s Summer Reading Program is being offered in conjunction with GO Lancaster, which is a program that is designed to get kids outside by visiting county parks. “You can pick up a booklet at the library that has instructions on how to participate,” she said.
