One of the newest members of the staff at Baron Elementary School spends his days interacting with students, providing a calming presence in a judgment-free zone. He also might give the kids a few friendly licks or wag his tail to show his happiness.
Earlier this school year, the school introduced Sputnik, a Goldendoodle facility dog.
“Other schools in our district have facility dogs, and we used to have one, but the staff member in charge left,” said Allison Gehman, a fourth-grade teacher who is Sputnik’s handler. “Dr. Marrolli, our principal, and Dr. Flannery, our assistant superintendent, worked with Phoenix Assistance Dogs out
Sputnik and feeling an instant connection.

“He’s related to one of the other facility dogs in the district that we’ve had success with,” she said.

Auction Makes MTPL Available for Everyone

When you have a facility as nice as the Manheim Township Public Library (MTPL), you want it to be utilized. But the busier MTPL is, the more resources are required to operate it.
“We are the busiest library in the county,” said Rennae Newman, fundraiser for MTPL. “With as many patrons as we have, we need funding to support that value. That’s why fundraising is so important.
“We have many, many, many people from outside Manheim Township who use the library,” continued Newman. “It’s very important to give people an opportunity to support the library. Having fundraisers here at the library is a reminder to people that you’re getting all this stuff for free but someone has to pay for it.”
One of the ways MTPL funds programs, activities and resources is through its upcoming annual pop-up silent auction. Currently, the library is seeking auction donations from local businesses and individuals, and then ultimately bidders interested in purchasing the items and merchandise.

“We’re always actively seeking donations,” said Newman. “We reach out every year. We’re always looking for new patrons. We’re always looking to put together unique experiences.”
“Every item we get has at least one book added to it,” Newman added. “We’re a library; we want to promote literacy and reading.”
After the donations are collected, MTPL will conduct its 5th annual pop-up silent auction from Monday, June 8, through noon on Saturday, June 20, at the library. Individuals can acquire their bidding numbers on MTPL’s website or by visiting the library, where the items will be displayed.

Flavorfest participants will include Manheim-based Glasshouse Wineworks and Oak Tree Orchard, along with Seven Mountains Wine Cellars, Armstrong Valley Winery, Bee Kind Winery, Jackson Square Vineyard and more. The festival will also highlight the state’s growing craft spirits scene with tastings from numerous distilleries, including Spirits Distilling Co., Nomad Distilling Co., Cold Spring Hollow Distillery and Hillbilly Hooch.
“Attendees can also explore a variety of artisans and unique vendors highlighting their crafts and goods,” Smith said. “Multiple food booths will offer lunch and snack options, alongside selections from Swashbuckler Brewing Co., Lancaster County Cider and signature cocktails from Mount Hope Estate’s Spirits Distilling Co.”
This is the 18th year for Flavorfest.
“The original event concept was to highlight wines, foods, artisans and musicians in Pennsylvania,” Smith recalled. “Throughout the years, the amazing wine offerings became the ultimate hero of the event.”

“Just like all of our fundraisers, it raises funds and gets people into the library,” said Newman. “We want to do our fundraisers at the library. It gives people time to come here.”

For convenient shopping, wine and spirits purchases will be transported to the designated Wine Check tent located in the parking lot for easy pickup when departing. Guests will receive a Wine Check ticket when making their purchase to present when claiming their purchase at the tent.
Flavorfest will be held rain or shine. It’s open to people of all ages.
A General Admission ticket for visitors age 21 and up includes an official tasting glass and sampling. Guests ages 12 to 20 require a nontasting ticket, and children age 11 and under will be admitted free of charge.

“We try to offer things that hit a lot of different tastes,” said Newman, a resident of East Lampeter Township. “We have a lot of miscellaneous items. We have to wait for items to arrive, and then we have to pair them with other items.”
Organizers of MTPL’s pop-up silent auction are hoping to raise $10,000 for the library from the event. In addition to purchasing supplies and books, the money will be used to fund programs like MTPL’s popular summer reading program for kids, as well as adult programming.
“It’s going to help support programming and supplies that go above and beyond what is budgeted for,” said Newman. “It’s not restricted. It’s for things we need in the library.”
MTPL is operated through municipal funding from Manheim Township and state funding from Pennsylvania. The library also receives grants for specific projects and conducts additional fundraisers like its summer reading celebration - which this year will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 15, in MTPL’s parking lot - an annual appeal, three book events throughout the year

“We live in Manheim, and I thought this would be a neat way to have him with me at sporting events, musicals, plays, more opportunities than just here at school,” Gehman said of her family’s decision to house Sputnik. “We thought it was a neat way to give to the community.”
With four children, two in high school and two in middle school, Gehman bringing Sputnik into the household has been a true family affair.

Since Sputnik arrived, attendance has skyrocketed, Gehman said.
“In the middle part of the year, we were having a couple of kids who were having a hard time coming into school,” she explained. “Their family would say Sputnik was the reason their child got out of the car in the parking lot and came into the building.”

“He goes to the grocery store with us, to basketball games and sports practice,” Gehman said, noting that while the family has had dogs before, they had never taken on a project quite like this. “It’s been really fun doing this as a family. I had seen other people training dogs, and it was always something that interested me.”

“One of the prizes is to take a walk with Sputnik, and we have hundreds of tickets in that prize bucket each month,” she stated. “It’s our most popular prize.”
Sputnik loves the attention he receives from students, who enjoy brushing him and petting him.
“For many kids who can’t have a dog at home, this is their dog,” Gehman said.
Students also spend time reading to Sputnik, who lends a supportive furry ear.
Sputnik was purchased through district funds, with the school’s Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO) covering the costs of treats, grooming and other necessities.
“We have a very generous PTO that helps with day-to-day needs,”
Gehman said.
Overall, “Sputty,” as the kids and staff members call him, has had a positive effect on the school environment, Marrolli said.
“He has helped to create a positive school community, where kids want to come to school,” she said, noting that kids who consistently demonstrate the values of respect, responsibility and safety get to spend time with the dog.
Gehman said an outcome she didn’t expect from Sputnik’s presence has been a growing sense of community both inside and outside the school walls.
“When people meet him, it opens the door to conversations,” she said. “He can sense when someone is having a rough day; he will go and sit beside their desk. Having him in public, he can seem to feel people’s

“We see ourselves as a community hub,” said Newman. “It’s a gathering place. People are coming here for everything and anything. We have folks who are constantly using our study rooms. We have people with disabilities using our facilities. We see a lot of consistent faces.
“Fifteen years ago, this building was built because there was a need,” concluded Newman. “That need has been supported by the community. It is not cheap to run this building, but it’s heavily used. The library continues to strengthen the community.”
