There’ssomething comforting about a lasagna.

That’s the message behind Lasagna Love, an international organization that began in 2020 during the height of the pandemic, recruiting volunteers to make and deliver lasagnas to people in need. Sandi Mauer, coordinator of Lasagna Love for Lancaster County, said the organization is looking for volunteers, as well as people who would like to receive a lasagna.

“ We are here to help anyone in need, and there’s no judgment whatsoever,” Mauer stated. “The goal of the program is to feed families, spread kindness and strengthen communities.”

Mauer began volunteering with Lasagna Love last summer, and she soon found out that the county coordinator for the program didn’t live locally. She stepped up to organize efforts in the area, and lasagnas are currently delivered throughout Lancaster County by Lasagna Love volunteers.

“People can sign up for a lasagna if they have any need,” Mauer explained, adding that people can sign up at https://lasagnalove.org/request. “It could be a financial need or a health issue or an emotional need, or anyone who just needs a break from life for a moment. They can request a lasagna, and then we match them up with a volunteer who will deliver it. We don’t turn anyone down for any reason.”

Mauer noted that Lasagna Love is a great program to volunteer with, because volunteers can set their own schedules. “If you only want to do one lasagna a month, you can do that,” she remarked. “If you only want to make a lasagna one time, you can do it one time and be done. If you want to do four lasagnas a month, one every week, you can do that, too. You can also set up your own delivery radius and drive as far or as close as you want to deliver.” She noted that there are options to make meat or vegetarian lasagnas and that lasagnas can be delivered unbaked or baked.

Lasagna Love began in 2020 when Rhiannon Menn founded the organization in San Diego to spread kindness through home-cooked meals. Mauer noted that a study of more than 30,000 people who have received lasagnas revealed the impact of the program. “Ninety-eight percent of the recipients said that they were inspired to pay it forward, and 21% had already done so within just a few days of receiving their lasagna,” she noted, adding that they didn’t necessarily make another lasagna, but did something for somebody else. “I really love the ripple effect of this project. It just makes me feel good to participate in this project.” She also noted that quite often people who have been recipients of a lasagna become volunteers working for the organization.

Mauer, who says she enjoys cooking, noted that people do not have to be professional chefs to make a lasagna. “I follow different Lasagna Love groups on Facebook, and I’ll see there are new people signing up to do it who say they’ve never made a lasagna before in their life,” she stated. “You don’t have to have any real cooking skills. You just have to be able to throw a lasagna together, and you just need to have a desire to want to help people.”

Manheim Historical Society has scheduled a grand reopening on Sunday, May 21, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the railroad station, located at 210 S. Charlotte St., Manheim.

The purpose of the grand reopening is to showcase the historical society’s Stiegel collection of stove plates, its cannon stove, and an assortment of glassware. An assortment of the Stiegel glass pieces were featured in an article in the January-February 2023 edition of Early American magazine; some of those pieces will be available for viewing in the historical society’s display cases.

Also, at 2 p.m. that day, historical society volunteer Dan Snyder will give an informative presentation on Henry William Stiegel’s life.

Stiegel was born in May 1729. In celebration of his 294th birthday, the historical society will serve birthday cake while supplies last on May 21 at the railroad station.

Other activities will be available at the railroad complex that day as well. The model railroad room will be open, and tours of the train station will be offered. Weather permitting, the historical society will give rides on its Birney trolley. Additionally, the historical society’s colonial log houses, located at 30-32 E. High St., Manheim, will be open for free tours from 1 to 4 p.m.

All activities are free.

Flashfood and Giant reduce food waste

In honor of Stop Food Waste Day, Flashfood and the Giant Company recently announced a major milestone in their sustainability and food waste reduction efforts. Since May 2020, when it first partnered with Flashfood, a digital marketplace that connects consumers to heavily discounted food nearing its best-by date, the Giant Company has diverted 6 million pounds of food from landfills.

As a direct result, the Giant Company and Flashfood have together saved more than 10 million pounds of greenhouse gas emissions from being released into the atmosphere, which is the equivalent of taking 1,186 cars off the road for a year. The food saved also equates to more than two million meals that fed families instead of ending up in landfills.

The Flashfood program started as a four-store pilot in 2020 and has since been integrated across 190 locations across Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia.

Flashfood shoppers use the app to save on meats, dairy products, seafood, fresh fruits and vegetables and other grocery items. Shoppers browse and purchase discounted food items directly through the Flashfood app on their mobile phone and then pick up their order from the Flashfood Zone located inside their participating Giant or Martin’s store.

For more information on Giant’s community impact efforts, visit www.giantfood stores.com/pages/purpose. More information about Flashfood is available at www.flashfood.com.

Baron track teams split season finale vs Spot

With the calendar officially flipped to May, the track and field teams turn their collective attention to big post season meets. Before Manheim Central can get to those post season adventures, they first had to finish out their regular season which involved hosting Garden Spot on the 8th. The result was a commanding 97.5-48.5 win for the Lady Barons and an 86.5-63.5 loss for the boys.

Maddie Knier took her usual spot at the front of the pack for Central, winning the high jump (5-2), long jump (17-6.25), triple jump (35-7) and javelin (125). Laci Nelson (shot put) and Chloe Enck (discus) picked up the remaining field wins.

Six other Lady Barons claimed individual events on the track with all six taking part in two winning relays.

Abbie Reed (100H) and Liz Voegele (300H) swept the hurdle events with Reagan Ibach (1600m) and Julie Lindberg (3200m) taking the distance events. Milan Snell claimed the 400m and Julia Kahler the 800m to account for the final solo wins.

Central opened the meet with a win in the 3200m thanks to Sarah Forry, Ibach, Kahler and Lindberg and closed out the meet with a win in the 1600m thanks to

Reed, Voegele, Forry and Snell.

On the boy’s side, the Barons claimed seven total events with six coming in individual events. Ryan Kosydar, Carson Brooks, Ryan Kenneff and Cameron Evans accounted for the lone relay win, taking the 3200m win a time of 9:02. Landon McGallicher picked up three event wins, sweeping the hurdles with a 15.3 in the 110H and a 41.0 in the 300H while adding a 23.6 to take the 200m.

Kahlen Watt claimed two of the remaining three wins, posting an 11.4 in the 100m and taking the javelin with a top toss of 158-10. Wyatt Kupres rounded out the first place winners with a 146-1 in the discus.

VOLLEYBALL

The boys’ volleyball team continued their march towards a perfect regular season with a 3-0 win over Lebanon on May 9th. Central had little trouble dispatching the Cedars, posting wins of 25-7, 25-13 and 25-8 to send Lebanon home on the wrong end of a sweep. Logan Groff had 12 kills, Dylan Musser 22 assists with Reagan Miler adding three aces and two digs. Landan Mattiace chipped in with one block.

SOFTBALL

The Lady Baron softball team capped their furious sprint to end the regular sea-

son, winning five of their final six games to finish 13-6. Not only is that good enough for a spot in the L-L playoffs but it also puts the Lady Barons right of the middle of the 16team District 3-5A bracket.

Two of those wins came over ELCO on back-to-back days, giving Central an odd double header victory. Up first was a rain make-up game from April with the Lady Barons needing only four innings to collect a 16-1 win. Riley Hostetter was the star of the show, covering all four innings in the circle to pick up the win while accounting for four RBI, all in the fourth. Hostetter got the 10-run frame going with a three-run blast and capped things off with a fielder’s choice that stretched the lead to 15, kicking in the mercy rule. Brianna Mylin made the most of her one hit, smacking a three-run homer as part of Manheim’s five run first. Kayleigh Detz enjoyed two triples in the game with her fourth inning hit pushing three runs across. Mickey Lauver (two RBI) and Abby Logan (one RBI) finished the offensive explosion for Manheim.

One day later Manheim Central collected another four-inning, mercy rule win over ELCO, this one by a 17-2 final. Hostetter picked up another quick win, allowing three hits and two runs over

the four innings while helping her own cause with a fourth inning RBI. Brynn Lehman matched that single RBI, using a third inning triple to get the job done. Detz fronted the offense, driving in four runs on one hit, a second inning double. Mylin added three RBI on two hits while both Lauver and Ava Kenneff finished with two hits and two RBI.

May 8th saw the Lady Barons win their third straight mercy rule game, this one an 11-0 victory over Cocalico. This time Hostetter needed five innings to collect the win, allowing three hits and two walks to go with nine strikeouts. Five different Lady Barons finished with two RBI starting with Lauver, Kenneff and Lehman who all finished with two hits. Detz and Logan rounded out the group but had just one hit apiece. Hostetter finished with two hits but one RBI thanks to a second inning single.

Central needed some late game heroics to collect the 32 win over Conestoga Valley in the May 10th regular season finale. The Lady Buckskins plated two runs in the top of the second and held that 2-0 lead until the bottom of the sixth. That is where Manheim finally strung together enough offense to pull off a comeback. Hailey Peterson started things off with a two-run single while Paige Garner finished things up with a sac fly to plate what proved to be the winning run. Hostetter allowed just two hits with both CV runs coming as unearned on the way to the win.

BASEBALL

The baseball team also closed out their regular season with a winning streak. Theirs was a two-game variety but the wins over ELCO and Cocalico pushed Central’s record to 14-6 overall and 123 in Section Three, earning the Barons one of the eight LL playoff berths.

The win over ELCO went down on the 5th with Central using a five-run third to blow the game open. Cayde Connelly was the beneficiary of the outburst, covering all seven innings on the way to the win. Jared Murray drove in one run during the third inning rally, adding a two-run single in the sixth to finish with three RBI. Nolan Book also

pushed one run across in the third, adding another RBI in the fourth. Chase Travitz finished with one hit but did help with two RBI while Brady Harbach and Colin Neiles each added one RBI.

The Barons needed three pitchers to collect a win on May 8th. The trio of Jared Murry, Cael Martin and Cole Lawhorne teamed up for a two-hit shutout with the trio combining for 12 strikeouts, seven by game winner Murry, and six walks. Book led the way at the plate, using a third inning single to put Central up 2-0. Neiles, Travitz and Ty Clugston all added run producing singles in the fifth inning to finish the scoring.

HARTZ Physical Therapy

On April 22, the annual wreath laying ceremony to honor James Buchanan was held at the former president’s tomb in Woodward Hill Cemetery in Lancaster. The tradition of laying a fresh wreath of flowers at United States presidents’ tombs each year has been observed for decades and is

completed for every individual who has held the office.

The ceremony included remarks from guests such as Assistant Adjutant General of the Pennsylvania Army National Guard James McCormick, chairman of the Lancaster County Commissioners Ray D’Agostino, Lancaster City Chief of Police Richard Mendez, Nathan Gilchrist III of

Masonic Lodge 43, Jean Weglarz of Woodward Hill Cemetery and director of President James Buchanan’s Wheatland Patrick Clarke. The event was hosted by LancasterHistory in partnership with Woodward Hill Cemetery, and an invocation and benediction was delivered by Timothy Mentzer of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church.

Many groups provided support for the ceremony, including the Pilot Club of Lancaster, Scouts BSA Troop 58, the Lancaster Fencibles, the Red Rose Veterans Honor Guard and the 328th Brigade Support Battalion of the Pennsylvania National Guard.

“It’s a small and solemn service to bring a wreath to the gravesite and remember that president’s service,” Clarke said. “Not every community has a former president who they can claim as one of their community members. Whether you feel that Buchanan was a good president or a horrible one, he was a Pennsylvanian.”

The date of the ceremony was selected to fall near Buchanan’s date of birth, which is April 23. LancasterHistory first became involved with the event to assist with the ceremony and tie it into its educational programming, as the organization primarily offers exhibits and tours at Buchanan’s former home in Lancaster.

Many of the groups participate in the ceremony each year because of their direct relation to the former president. Buchanan is considered to be one of the ear-

liest members of Pennsylvania’s National Guard due to his serving as a militia member in the War of 1812. Due to this connection, for the annual service the Pennsylvania National Guard provides soldiers to perform color guard duties, raise a new American flag and speak on Buchanan’s history and involvement in the military. The Red Rose Honor Guard donates a new flag for the raising every year and offers the service of one of its members to play taps for the ceremony. During Buchanan’s time as president and as a member of Congress, he consistently voted to provide support for the country’s military.

Buchanan was also a member of the Masonic Lodge and became master of the Masonic Lodges in Lancaster, Lebanon and York while serving in the House of Representatives. One of Lancaster city’s seminal members of the police department was a close friend of Buchanan’s. Both the current chief of police and members of the Masonic Lodge said a few words for the ceremony. The Lancaster Fencibles, a group of military re-enactors, performed a rifle salute during the service. The original Fencibles were volunteer militia members whose duties included guarding Buchanan when he was elected president and traveled to Washington, D.C.

“It’s a valuable thing to recognize the history of Lancaster,” Clarke said. “These are opportunities to learn about the past, hear how that time period affected our days today and learn from it.”

The Ephrata Cloister Chorus will present its annual spring concert on Sunday, May 21, at 3 p.m. in the 1741 Meetinghouse (Saal) at Historic Ephrata Cloister, 632 W. Main St., Ephrata. The free concert will feature a significant number of compositions created by the community’s founder, Conrad Beissel, and by Sister Föben, who has been recognized as one of America’s first female composers. The pieces have been edited for modern performance by Russell Getz and Christopher Herbert.

In addition, the chorus will present comparative and contrasting choral works by other religious-focused groups of early America, including Moravian, River Brethren, Shaker, and African-American traditions. Give-what-you-will donations will be accepted at the door to the Saal to support the work of the Ephrata Cloister Chorus.

The museum will be open to visitors at noon with free admission to the site. The orientation video will be shown in the auditorium at 12:30 p.m., followed at 1 p.m. by a cake and beverage reception in the Visitor Center until the time of the performance.

Two historic buildings on the property, the Saal and the Saron (the sisters’ dormitory), will be open for visitation with interpreters. No guided tours will be offered that afternoon, but visitors will be encouraged to follow the halfmile route along paved pathways through the property and around the historic buildings until the hourlong performance begins at 3 p.m.

Attendees may also stop by the Visitor Center to view a display of memorabilia from the years that the summer drama, “Vorspiel,” was performed on Saturday nights in the amphitheater. For over 20 years starting in the 1960s, the chorus and cast sang and acted out the story of a fictionalized romance between a celibate sister and a Revolutionary War soldier. Five of the concert pieces this year were sung in the pageant of Cloister music.

Individuals interested in becoming a member of the chorus may contact Mark Herr at minstrel52@hotmail.com or call the Cloister site at 717733-6600 for more information. To learn more, visit www.ephratacloister.org.

development manager for the local Salvation Army. “With the scholarships, our focus is to help students and their families. Everyone is welcome to apply. If students need help to go to college, we’re there for them.”

To apply for the Salvation Army scholarships, students must be residents of Lancaster County, and they must be high school seniors with GPAs of 2.0 or higher who are going on to college and can demonstrate a financial need. After the students submit a 500word essay and are interviewed by a selection committee, the winners are chosen.

“We believe a lot of students don’t have the confidence to go to college because of the financial responsibilities associated with it,” said Boules. “Going to college isn’t cheap. We want to be part of the encouragement, the support. We believe in the next generation. We believe in education. And when we help these students, we hope that they will be motivated to give back to the community.”

Boules said that the scholarship’s number of applicants and number of recipients

varies from year to year. But over the 24 years that the scholarship has been in existence, the Salvation Army has awarded hundreds of thousands of dollars to county students in need.

“We see the need as being bigger every year,” said Boules. “People used to be able to afford college. We’re trying to secure donors because we want to see it continue. When you see the impact it has on students, you know it’s worth it. You’re changing lives.”

The Salvation Army Lancaster Corps also helps with things like rent assistance, utility assistance, and social services and works closely with other community organizations to promote the greater good.

“The Salvation Army is here for everyone, regardless of language, ethnicity or background,” said Boules. “We want people to support the Salvation Army and to be part of the movement.”
