Summer Picnic Will Support Seniors
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
ark your calendar for Saturday, May 30, and share food and fellowship at Mt. Hope Nazarene Retirement Community.
The nonprofit invites the public to a Gather & Grill Summer Barbecue Picnic from 4 to 7 p.m. on the campus, 3026 Mt. Hope Home Road, Manheim.
The Gather & Grill catered meal will include charcoal fire-grilled hamburgers and hot dogs, creamy homestyle baked macaroni and cheese, savory baked beans and fudgy brownies. Guests can make their own brownie sundaes with vanilla, black raspberry or twist soft-serve ice cream, complete with assorted toppings. A variety of drinks will be provided.

Along with the meal, the festivities will include yard games, activities for children and prizes for kids of all ages.
During the picnic, Mt. Hope will celebrate its 57th birthday, which
is on Tuesday, June 2.
“Information will be shared about LOVEMTHOPE Day, which occurs on June 2,” explained Kris Wilson, director of advancement.
“This day is an opportunity for

Dive Into Creek Discovery Day

Discover what lives in and around local waterways and why it matters at “Creek Discovery Day: Exploring a Creek and Riparian Restoration.” Hosted by the Chiques Creek Watershed Alliance (CCWA) as part of Lancaster Conservancy Water Week 2026, the event will take place Friday, June 12, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at a private property just southwest of Manheim. The exact address will be shared upon registration.
At the event, explorers of all ages can discover the trees, shrubs and pollinator plants streamside, while also exploring the creek and the critters that live there. People will learn about the stream’s restoration, and younger children will be invited to assemble bluebird houses to take home. A few houses will also be installed on-site.
The activity came about after CCWA president Paul Duncan had a conversation with Kristen Koch of the Penn State Extension, who had worked on grant projects at the site.

Honor the people who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country when the Cyrus R. Peters Memorial VFW Post 5956 hosts its annual Memorial Day parade and ceremony. The event will take place on Monday, May 25, at Manheim Veterans Memorial Park, by the Manheim Central High School football stadium, 320 Memorial Drive. People will gather at 9:30 a.m., and the parade will kick off at 10 a.m.

“I contacted the owner, who was graciously willing to have an educational event at the site,” Duncan said, adding that the event is meant to be hands-on. “Our guides will guide but not lecture on their topics. The point is not for the guides to show what they know but to challenge the participants to discover and learn how to learn. So, I hope participants will exercise their powers of observation.”
He encourages participants to consider topics including what

you to show your love and support for the high-quality, five-star-rated care provided by our team every day. On June 2, you are invited to participate in a special birthday giving celebration for Mt. Hope, where several anonymous donors have pledged to match dollar-for-dollar up to $12,500 raised during this 24-hour LOVEMTHOPE Giving Day.”
Wilson encourages people to attend the barbecue and support the ongoing work and ministry of Mt. Hope. Proceeds from the event will directly benefit benevolent care at the home and the ongoing needs of its residents.
The day will also celebrate the completion of new independent living cottages on the campus.
“The addition of these cottages reflects the organization’s ongoing commitment to serving seniors and individuals with disabilities, many of whom live on limited or fixed incomes,”Wilson explained.

Located in Rapho Township, Mt. Hope is home to 50 nursing care residents who rely on the facility for skilled nursing and rehabilitation services, as well as those residing in the six current independent suite-style, first-floor-living apartments.
“It was one year ago during the summer picnic that we celebrated the beginning of our new cottage building endeavor with a special groundbreaking ceremony,” Wilson said. “It feels fitting to celebrate the
completion of the independent living cottages at this year’s summer picnic. We are excited to welcome four new families who will be able to move into the newly completed cottages in May.”
The construction of two new independent living duplex cottages adds four first-floor, suite-style apartments to Mt. Hope. These cottages will increase Mt. Hope’s revenue, ultimately helping to support the nursing home’s mission, Wilson said.
“Most of our residents do not have the financial resources or the broader supportive network to cover the cost of their care - 80% of our residents cannot afford to pay for their nursing care,” she said. “Therefore, the primary source of funding for Mt. Hope is Medicaid, the state assistance program.”
She explained that a gap of almost $200 per day per resident exists between what the state reimburses and the actual cost of care for residents on state assistance.
“This Medicaid funding gap makes it increasingly difficult for Mt. Hope to absorb the costs of providing benevolent care without seeking other alternatives to offset rising expenses and continuing our creative fundraising initiatives,” Wilson said. “Mt. Hope has always
aimed to be good stewards of its resources, managing them conservatively. For over 57 years, Mt. Hope has been dedicated to providing charitable care to those in need. We have built a great reputation in the local community for offering excellent, affordable care in a friendly, familylike environment, thanks to our wonderful and loving staff.”
She thanked the donors, families and organizations that have partnered with Mt. Hope to make the vision for the cottages a reality and to ensure that financial concerns are not a barrier to receiving care.
“Your contributions help us continue to shine God’s light,” she said. “We are so grateful for the generous gifts that bless Mt. Hope. Thank you for caring about our residents and their homes.”
The Gather & Grill Summer Barbecue Picnic will be held rain or shine. Seating will be available under a large tent, but people are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs. There is a suggested donation per meal for the event, and reservations are requested by Saturday, May 23. To reserve a meal, email Wilson at advancement@mthopenazarene.org or call 717-682-8026.

Grants to Help Fund Native Plantings
The Giant Company, known locally as Giant and Martin’s, in partnership with Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful, has announced the return of the Healing the Planet Grant Program. The program, funded by Giant, aims to invest in native plantings across the company’s operating areas in Pennsylvania. A total of $100,000 will be donated for native community plantings. The funding is available to tax-exempt organizations, including local groups, governments, and schools. Eligible projects must be shovel-ready and include native plantings and direct costs relating to planting.
Eligible expenses include plants native to Pennsylvania, equipment, educational signage, tools, and supplies. Preference will be given to applications that aim to plant the highest quantity of native plants. Up to $4,000 may be awarded to a project.
To apply by Thursday, May 21, at 4 p.m., visit www.keeppabeautiful .org/grants-awards/grants/heal ing-the-planet-grant/healing-the
-planet-2026/. Awardees will be announced in June.
This is the sixth year Giant has partnered with Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful to offer Healing the Planet grants. In the past five years, more than $1.3 million has been awarded to 177 recipients for projects that connected people and families to green spaces; improved or helped protect local waterways and water resources; supported projects that addressed food waste prevention, reduction, and recovery; and promoted native tree planting initiatives.
Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful has supported community improvement initiatives and encouraged community leadership, responsibility, and respect for the environment since 1990. Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful, a state affiliate of Keep America Beautiful Inc., has more than 35 years of experience in organizing volunteer-driven community improvement events. For more information, visit www .keeppabeautiful.org.
Church Sets Craft and Yard Sale
Faith United Methodist Church (UMC), 1290 Fruitville Pike, Lititz, will hold its annual spring craft and yard sale on Saturday, May 23, from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event will take place rain or shine. The church’s driveway is accessible via Koser Road. Faith UMC will host a book, CD, and DVD sale inside its welcome center, with items available by donation. A food stand will fea -
ture hot dogs, chips, desserts, and drinks. The church’s youth group will offer various items by donation, with proceeds supporting the group’s events and missions.
To reserve a 20-by-20-foot yard sale space in the grass, visit https://tinyurl.com/FaithUMC YardSale or call 717-696-5321. No tables will be provided. Payment is due upon arrival on May 23.

elements make up the environment, why types of trees and plants are present and where the drainage lines are in the landscape and what role they play.
“Getting to know the trees and plants and landscapes around you is like making new friends - no longer strangers!” Duncan said. “And the powers of observation will stay with you and serve you for a lifetime.”
Mark Heller, who owns the property where the event will be held, said he wanted to participate because he liked the idea of helping others better understand a stream improvement/cleanup water project.
“My property is on a busy road between Manheim and Mount Joy and gets a lot of traffic,” Heller said. “People see it all the time, and I often get unsolicited comments/ feedback from people about the improvements made along the stream. Also, the stream floods the road during severe rain events, and that is quite often a topic of conversation that can then lead into the topic of improvements.”
He noted that the restoration is a work in process that requires weekly care to keep it progressing.
“Some trees and shrubs will expire, and new ones need to be planted in their place,” he shared. “High water will knock over tree tubes that need to be straightened, and mowing needs to occur to discourage rodents from nesting around and feeding on the planted material.”
Students from the Manheim Central High School FFA Club will help with the event, serving as guides for activities, and representatives from the Penn State Extension will lead the plant discovery stations.
The Manheim FFA chapter has a long-standing history of partnering with CCWA, said Allyson Heckman, agricultural educator and club adviser.
“Manheim FFA members will be helping to park cars, lead participants as they rotate throughout the various stations, help attend -
ees safely build their bluebird box and join the group on the walk of the creek and riparian restoration,” she explained.
Participating in the event helps the club meet its mission of strengthening agriculture in the community, she said, adding, “Any opportunity where we can partner with community organizations to educate the public and advocate for agriculture, we are always excited to help. Providing these learning opportunities to youth is the path to informed adults and consumers.”
Interns from Penn State’s Agriculture and Environment Center (AEC) will also be on hand for the discovery day, said Matt Royer, center director, who noted that the event provides a good opportunity for the students who spend the summer helping AEC staff in its watershed partnership work in the Lower Susquehanna.
“Among the activities planned for the Creek Discovery Day is exploring the site to identify the trees and other plants they discover in the restored area along the stream,” he remarked. “Some may be native species, some may be invasive, and the interns will help discoverers identify the species and learn about their role in the streamside ecosystem.”
Duncan noted that the Discovery Day also provides an opportunity for people to learn more about CCWA.
“A watershed organization is interested in protecting, improving and preserving the local natural resources for present and future generations,” he said. “So we’re all about the water above and below ground, but also the land the water flows over and how we can live sustainably within this natural and developed environment.”
To register for Creek Discovery Day, visit www.chiquescreekwater shedalliance.org and click on the “Upcoming” tab.
Participants should wear long pants and shoes that can get wet. Supplies are limited for the birdhouses, so early registration is encouraged.

The parade will start on Memorial Drive and will proceed down High Street to the square. It will continue north on Main Street and turn east on Gramby Street to return to the park.
“Being a solemn memorial event, there will be one float depicting a memorial photo wall of veterans donated by community members with loved ones who have served,” said Bill King, adjudant and former post commander. “There will be some military vehicles driven by active duty soldiers and several passenger vehicles with veterans riding along. The Mount Joy Legion
Riders will be in the parade, and the Boy Scouts and Young Marines will walk in the parade as well.”
Following the parade, a ceremony will be held at Manheim Veterans Memorial Park.
The featured speaker will be James Mergott, Sergeant First Class. He is a veteran of Desert Storm and Iraqi Freedom. Local students will read essays that they have written, and one will read the Gettysburg Address.
“The featured speaker will honor a local veteran, Jay Buckwalter, Private First Class, who was killed in service,” King remarked.
Dedicated in 2023, the Manheim Veterans Memorial honors the service of all veterans, but especially those from Manheim and neighboring Penn and Rapho townships, who served in the military in peace and war. It includes flagpoles for the Army, Marines, Navy, Air Force, Space Force and Coast Guard flags, as well as the Merchant Marines. The plaza also consolidates three other monuments from around Manheim, and it features an easily accessible site with a central gazebo for quiet reflection. Hundreds of memorial bricks have been placed around the

Hosting the Memorial Day parade and ceremony provides the VFW members an opportunity to fulfill the organization’s mission.
“The Manheim VFW works to remember, honor and support veterans and their families through fundraising, volunteering and events such as this one to remember those who have served and gave their all,” King said.

Farm Bureau Urges Driver Caution on Rural Roads
As temperatures rise and planting season gets underway across Pennsylvania, drivers navigating rural roads should be prepared to share them with large, slow-moving farm equipment.
The Pennsylvania Farm Bureau (PFB), along with state government partners, encouraged driver caution during Rural Roads Safety Week from April 12 to 18. Each year, PFB partners with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture (PDA), and the Pennsylvania State Police (PSP) to raise awareness about staying safe on rural roads during the spring planting season.
Drivers should know that farm equipment can legally operate on public roads, including at night, but must follow safety guidelines based on equipment size. Any vehicle traveling under 25 miles per hour is required to display a Slow-Moving Vehicle (SMV) sign - an orange triangle with a red border - on the back of the vehicle. Drivers who see that emblem should slow down immediately. When following a tractor on the road, it is important to keep the following information in mind: farm equipment may turn at unexpected places, into fields or farm lanes; large equipment pulling to the right may be preparing for a wide left turn; never pass unless the oncoming lane is fully clear and visible; and never pass in a no-passing zone or within 100 feet of an intersection, railroad crossing, bridge, or tunnel.
