BY CATHY MOLITORISMembers of the Manheim
VFW Auxiliary 5956 have started a project to keep Manheim looking great, and the group could use your help. Volunteers began cleaning up a stretch of highway on Manheim Pike as part of the PennDOT Adopt-A-Highway program. “Our section starts at Kauffman’s Mennonite Church up to Gibble Auto Upholstery on Route 72,” said Penny West, who is chairing the project. The stretch runs between 1355 and 925 Lancaster Road.
“Adopt-A-Highway is a program where PennDOT provides materials
to volunteers to clean up trash in a 2-mile section of road where they put up a sign, recognizing the group that’s keeping the area clean,” West explained.
Members of the VFW Auxiliary decided to start the project as a way to not only clean up litter, but also to fulfill the group’s mission of connecting with the community.

“Auxiliary outreach is our program where we partner with other groups to help them with projects and reaching their goals,” West explained. “Usually, it would be a nonprofit group, but not always. We want to show the community that we care about other groups and
would like to offer a helping hand, if we are able.”
She said the group is specifically looking to work with Boy and Girl Scout troops in Manheim for the project. “We are looking forward to teaching them to be respectful of the environment and to take pride in where they live,” West shared. “ We hope to be working with Girl Scout Troop 70479 and 70531 and Boy Scout Troop 47 closer to the fall and possibly earlier, if there are any other troops that would like to join us.”
She noted that participation in the project is easy and fun, and participants get the satisfaction of a job
well done. “I think it’s important to do the Adopt-A-Highway program because it helps keep the roads clean of litter and trash, and it gives a sense of pride in your community,” she remarked. “Groups could do a section as a morale booster for their business. It’s also good exercise and gets you outside.”
Although the auxiliary does not have any specific dates scheduled in the upcoming weeks, West said she is hoping to do more cleanup sessions throughout the summer. She encourages anyone who is interested in helping to contact her for more information. She may be reached at greattwins22283@gmail.com.
GSS is a nonprofit organization that seeks to assist those experiencing homelessness in Lancaster and Chester counties. The organization currently has five locations, which are located in Lancaster city, Ephrata, Coatesville, Phoenixville and Kennett Square. “ We’re really grateful to EPC for partnering with us for so long. It’s a fun way for people to get involved,” said Rachel Shelley, marketing and communications specialist for GSS. “Fundraisers like these make our growth possible and have allowed us to assist more people than ever before.” In the past year, GSS has served more than 600 people in the local area. golf equipment and gift cards. The prize drawing will be open to players in the morning session and evening session; if a player’s name is drawn after he or she has left, the player will be contacted to receive the prize. This year, many local businesses have donated items for the prize drawing for the first time. “It’s really neat to have fresh people involved and helping the mission,” said Rachel Stebbins, EPC’s marketing director. “People in Lancaster are very generous and are more than happy to support the cause.”
Food will be included in the cost of admission for the event. Peters’ BBQ will provide meals for lunch and dinner; breakfast from Joe on the Go Coffee Co. will be offered in the morning; and boxed lunches will be provided by Trio Bar and Grill. Drinks such as water and iced tea will be offered throughout the day from a beverage cart.
The funds raised from the EPC Golf Outing will support a variety of projects and initiatives that GSS has begun implementing this year. The Kennett Square facility was opened in December 2022, and the organization plans to break ground for a new office building in Ephrata this summer. The addition of the Ephrata offices will allow caseworkers to give their clients more privacy while assisting them; previously, staff members needed to share offices due to space limitations. GSS has also started to offer free, in-house counseling services to its clients. By removing barriers such as cost and transportation, GSS hopes to give accessible support to clients who are experiencing trauma.

“There’s something about giving back that brings out the best in everyone. Everyone is excited to be there supporting GSS,” Stebbins said. “W hether you’re a regular golfer, a newbie, or somewhere in the middle, you’re going to have a great time.”

Registration for the EPC Golf Outing can be completed up to 48 hours before the event, but space will become limited after Friday, May 19. To register, visit https://epc golfouting.com/register.

Barons claim 8th straight win in victory over Spot
BY ERIC PYLESEight is Great was surely not a saying created to talk about sports, but it does apply to the Manheim Central baseball team. With a 9-7 win over Garden Spot on May 2nd the Baron’s pushed their winning streak to eight straight.

Cole Lawhorne picked up the win despite recording just two of the 21 outs. His stint on the mound was sandwiched between starter Cael Martin (1K) and Cayde Connelly (5K). All seven Spot runs were on Martin’s watch, leaving him with no decision.
Nolan Book enjoyed a three RBI game, adding a two-run double to his first inning sac fly. Ky Watson and Brady Harbach drew back-to-back walks in the fifth with each pushing a run across. Watson added a seventh inning single to his day to finish with two RBI. Connelly and Jared Murray wrapped up the offense with matching fifth inning RBIs.
Central’s seventh game of their streak came one day prior with a 3-1 win over Donegal. Murry covered all seven innings, allowing just one hit and one earned run while mowing down 10 Indians. Harbach put Manheim on the board with a first inning single while Landon
McGallicher picked up his RBI with a third inning sac fly.
The streak ended on May 3rd with Octorara stealing a 3-2 win. Chase Travitz surrendered all three Brave runs and despite just one coming as earned the junior still took the loss. Travitz issued three walks with two strikeouts over his four innings. Lawhorne and Book finished the remaining three innings, allowing just one hit while striking out three and walking two. Harbach accounted for Manheim’s lone RBI with his first inning sac fly.
TENNIS
The boy’s tennis season came to a hard close with the Barons participating in the LL’s Flight Tournament starting April 27th. Only one of Central’s seven entries was able to collect a win before bowing out with the duo of Zach Spangler and Jon Breinich taking that honor. The pair enjoyed a default win over Elco’s Moses Chekanov and Santiago Areiza in the Flight Three bracket before falling to Pritesh Tanna and Chris Hanger of Manheim Township.
Central’s Flight One doubles team of Ben Ginder and Owen Patten dropped their opening match to Donegal’s Akilan Murugesan and Lan-
don Keller. Aaron Cassel and Rodney Sauder met the same fate in their Flight Two doubles match opposite Conestoga Valley’s Fabian Heine and Boro Krstic.
Singles play went much the same way with Ginder dropping his first match in the Flight One bracket to Hempfield’s Cooper Lehman. Patten lost his Flight Two match to Ephrata’s Todd Weist while Sauder fell to McCaskey’s Garaub Ghimire in Flight Three action. Cassel was the final Baron to fall in singles, dropping his Flight Four match to Sam Kenner of Hempfield.
VOLLEYBALL
The boys’ volleyball team continues to collect wins as they march to the postseason. The Barons improved to 10-0 with wins over Lancaster Mennonite and Ephrata.
Against the Mountaineers on May 2nd, Central started slowly, leading to a 25-21 Ephrata win, just Manheim’s second dropped game all season. That was enough to shake off the bus ride blues with Central flipping the switch for wins of 25-16, 2514 and 25-12. Dylan Musser finished with 54 assists and Logan Groff 17 kills. Groff added two aces while Colin Rohrer had 16 digs.
Manheim Central had no such trouble with the Blazers on April 27th, using easy wins of 25-7, 25-15 and 25-18 to secure the 3-0 win. Musser had 22 assists and three aces. Jacob Moyer tallied seven kills and Landan Mattiace two blocks.

SOFTBALL
With the end of the regular season in sight the Lady Baron softball team continues to close in on a playoff berth. Central used wins over Garden Spot and Octorara to counter a loss to Donegal, maintaining their hold on second place in the Section Three standings.
The setback to section leading Donegal happened on May 1st with the Lady Indians handing Manheim a 12-6 loss. Riley Hostetter was hit with all 12 Donegal runs but four Lady Baron errors pushed seven of those runs to the unearned category. Hostetter did have six walks to go with four strikeouts.
Brynn Lehman paced the offense with two hits and four RBI, including a three-run blast in the third. Hailey Peterson added two hits of her own with a second inning single accounting for her lone RBI.
Central entered the Donegal game coming off an 18-3 thumping of Garden Spot on
April 27th. Eleven hits coupled with four Spot errors left the Lady Barons needing just three innings to secure the 15run victory. Adriana Sheaffer led the offense with two hits and four RBI including a tworun double that ended the contest in the third. Kayleigh Detz and Brianna Mylin both
homered in the third with Detz’s coming as a three-run variety while Mylin’s was a two-run shot. Paige Garner added two RBI on one hit to round out the offensive leaders. Hostetter picked up the easy win, allowing three hits and three runs to go with six strikeouts and no walks.
The Lady Barons got back to winning on May 3rd, using a late surge to cruise to a 14-4 win over Octorara. Hostetter covered six of the seven innings to get the win with Garner taking over for the final three outs. Garner also got things rolling at the plate with a second inning single that made it 1-0. Manheim blew the game open with a five-run fifth that included RBI producing hits from Hostetter, Detz and Abby Logan. Another four-run burst followed in the sixth thanks to Mylin’s two-run home run coupled with another two-run single by Detz. Mylin and Hostetter capped the scoring with matching one run singles in the seventh, helping set the 14-4 final.
TRACK

The track team hosted Ephrata on May 1st and suffered their first double loss of the season with the boys falling 97-53 while the Lady Baron fell just short in a 76-74 loss.

Maddie Knier was responsible for four of the Lady Baron’s seven wins, taking the top spot in the high jump (52), long jump (16-10.5), triple jump (35-5) and javelin (1242). Abbie Reed (300H) and Kylie Mattiace (100H) teamed up to sweep the hurdles while the 3200m relay team opened the meet with a win. Julianna Lindberg, Reagan Ibach, Julia Kahler and Sarah Forry turned in a 9:59 in that win.

The boy’s managed five event wins during the loss to Ephrata. Landon McGallicher was responsible for two of them thanks to a 14.9 in the 110 hurdles and a 40.5 in the 300’s. Carter Bruckhart seized the final win on the track with a 10:55 in the 3200m.

Victor Paskings claimed one of the two field wins, topping out at 19-1.5 in the long jump. Wyatt Kupres claimed the other with a toss of 135-8 in the discus.

No one goes it alone. That’s why healthy family relationships provide structure for our society.
Bethany Christian Services is all about healthy familiesconventional families, extended families, blended families. Even the nonprofit organization’s fundraisers revolve around families.

“For me, the people who make up my family may not all be blood relatives,” said Dawn Tluczek, who’s in charge of church and donor engagement for Bethany Christian Services of Lancaster. “For some people who are single, it’s their cat or their dog. It’s the people who surround us and who have our backs. We are very involved with foster care and adoption. It’s who you go through life with.”
On Tuesday, May 16, Bethany Christian Services of Lancaster is sponsoring its inaugural in-person Go Further for Family walk/run at Long’s Park, 1441 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster. The event will be held at Pavilion 1 at Long’s Park and will begin at 12:30 p.m., with registration at noon.

Registration rates are reduced for groups of individuals, and participants are encouraged to solicit sponsorships from businesses, family members and friends. Participants will receive a T-shirt and goodie bag, and bikes and pets are welcome.
“Our organization is all about family preservation,” said Tluczek. “Everything revolves around the family. (The event is) an opportunity for families to walk together and just spend time together, talking with one another and engaging one another. It’s a time to put phones away. There’s something cool about family time.”
“We just want people to have a better understanding of who we are and see what we do,” continued Tluczek. “We’re very involved and engaged in our community. If one family becomes a foster family, it would be a success. There are a lot of organizations out there doing great things, and we’re one of them.”
After virtually introducing the Go Further for Family walk/run during the pandemic, Tluczek said she’s hoping for 150 participants for the event’s initial in-person staging. The Go Further for Family walk/run is part of a national initiative to support vulnerable children and families.

May is National Foster Care Month.

“The hope is you always

want to get bigger each year,” said Tluczek. “Eventually, I’d like to see hundreds, even thousands, come out. I don’t think the community knows enough about Bethany Christian Services. If one person can be touched and reached, hopefully the word spreads.”

Established in 1984, Bethany Christian Services operates out of its global offices in Grand Rapids, Mich., and also sponsors programs in Harrisburg, York, State College and Reading. Bethany Christian Services focuses on adop-

tion, foster care, parenting, pregnancy, the strengthening of families and refugees and immigrants.
“In Pennsylvania, there are 2,000 to 3,000 kids looking for families, and to us, that’s unacceptable,” said Tluczek. “There are kids who really need us. They are not bad kids, but they have no other families. It just takes someone with a heart.”
