Creativity Will Shine at Art Show

“PYouth Field Day Invites Kids to Get Outside

Great things happen when kids get outside. They can discover new skills, develop self-confidence, make new friends and, most of all, have fun.

Kids ages 10 to 15 are invited to the 31st annual Youth Field Day, organized by the Lancaster County Sportsmen For Youth. It will take place at the Milton Grove Sportsmen’s Club, 731 Milton Grove Road North, Elizabethtown, from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 6.

The show will be held on

eople love this show because there’s so much diversity,” said Marilyn Hobday, describing the spring Heart of Lancaster Arts and Craft Show. “There’s something for everyone’s pocketbook. We try to make sure we have enough diversity with prices that everybody can find something that they love. That’s important to us.”

Saturday, May 16, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. outside at Root’s Country Market & Auction, 705 Graystone Road, Manheim. It will feature 60 vendors, showcasing and selling a wide variety of arts and crafts.

“Community Day is a wonderful opportunity to bring together our entire Pleasant View communityresidents, staff, families, friends and neighbors - for a day filled with live music, great food and fun,” said Aubrey Smith, community engagement coordinator for Pleasant View Communities.

The public is invited to the annual event, which will run from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 16, at 2100 Town Square North, 544 N. Penryn Road, Manheim.

Highlights of the day will include food, animals, tractor rides and Lancaster Mobile Mini Golf. Face painting and balloon art will be provided by Joyful Canvas.

“We encourage kids and their parents to come to our Youth Field Day if they want to experience a day of outdoor activities,” said Lynn Carruthers, a volunteer with the event. “The 10 stations they will get to experience for 35 minutes each may vary slightly year to year but are typically archery, canoeing, fishing, fly fishing, muzzle loading, trapping, 22 rifle, trap shooting, turkeys (and) wildlife education with the PA game commissioners and Raven Ridge Wildlife Rescue.”

The event is free to attend, no gear is needed and participants will all receive a free lunch. Parents are encouraged to accompany their child, but it’s not required.

While Youth Field Day is an opportunity for kids who don’t have a background in outdoor activities to experience the fun, it’s open to any youths in the age range, said Scott Deiter, who coordinates the canoeing.

“We can say that many kids that start at age 10 return each year for the next four or five years that they fall into the age range,”

Susquehanna Chorale Names Interim Conductors

Nationally acclaimed choral conductors Paul Rardin and Amy Voorhees will lead the Susquehanna Chorale during the 2026-27 season, with Rardin conducting the Christmas program and Voorhees conducting the spring performance.

During the season, the Susquehanna Chorale Board will undertake a national search for the successor to Linda Tedford, who will step down this summer after 45 years at the helm of central Pennsylvania’s premier choral ensemble.

Rardin retired in 2025 after serving 14 years as the Elaine Brown chair of Choral Music and chair of the Vocal Arts Department at Temple University’s Boyer College of Music and Dance. While there, he conducted the Concert Choir, taught graduate conducting and managed the

seven-choir program. He previously taught at the University of Michigan and Towson University and was artistic director of the Mendelssohn Club of Philadelphia. His choirs performed at national conferences of NCCO and regional conferences of American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) and National Association for Music Education (NAfME).

Rardin holds degrees from Williams College and the University of Michigan (M.M. in Composition, D.M.A. in Conducting). His compositions and arrangements are published by Santa Barbara Music Publishing and E.C. Schirmer.

Voorhees, the Cyril M. Stretansky professor of choral music and director of choral activities at Susquehanna University, directs the University Choir and Chamber Singers and teaches conducting. Her University Choir has been invited to the ACDA Eastern Division Conference twice (2022 and 2026), was a finalist for the 2023 American Prize, and performed at the 2025 PMEA Conference. She also serves on the conducting faculty for the Simpson College Summer Master’s Program in Choral Conducting.

Voorhees is a member of NAfME and ACDA, having served on the Pennsylvania ACDA Executive Board as DEI coordinator and on the Iowa ACDA Board and Michigan State Vocal Music Association in student activities roles. She holds degrees from Michigan State University (D.M.A.), Simpson College (B.M.), Iowa State University (Music Ed. Certificate) and Drake University (M.Ed.).

Complete details for the 2026-27 season will be publicized following Tedford’s farewell spring concerts in May, which are aptly named “My Favorite Things.” More information is available at www.susquehanna chorale.org.

The 2026 Make-A-Wish Mother’s Day Truck Convoy will take place on Saturday, May 9.

Maggie, one of the 2026

convoy Ambassadors, has been diagnosed with a brain tumor. A previous issue incorrectly stated her diagnosis.

“We have a guy who does these huge, hand-turned bowls. They’re beautiful,” Hobday shared. “We have an artist who takes old metal pieces and makes some really cool sculptures out of them. We have a quilt maker. We have two people who do custom-made greeting cards. Everything in the show is juried, and it has to be handmade by the artists attending the show.”

A committee chooses the artists who will participate in the show, with artists coming from across the state and from Maryland and New Jersey. Hobday personally scouts smaller shows throughout the region, talking to artists and encouraging them to join her shows.

“We have amazing people on the committee who have been in business for a very long time - potters, jewelers, painters, sewing,” she said.

“We’re not just a random group of people making decisions on things we don’t know about. We know what we’re looking for.”

Hobday organizes a spring and fall show, and each year, attendees can support a local nonprofit.

This year’s recipient is the Columbia Cat Action Team (CCAT).

“They trap, neuter, spay and release cats,” Hobday said. “So far, over 700 cats have been saved by the program.”

The organization will have an information table set up at the show, with opportunities for people to donate to the cause.

“They’ll also sell items to raise money for their cause,” Hobday said.

She learned about the organization after attending a meeting where she met a roomful of volunteers dedicated to the efforts.

“I have cats, and they are all adopted,” she said.

“I think it’s really special that we’re going to support an organization that supports cats.”

Hobday, who grew up in Columbia, has an art gallery in town. She lives in Landisville and was an art teacher in the Hempfield School District for 25 years.

A watercolor artist, she’ll display her work at the show, and she also believes in the importance of supporting other artists.

“I mentor artists,” she said. “We always have at least five or six emerging artists who are part of our shows, to give them a chance to find out what this is all about.”

This is the seventh year for the spring show, but the fall Heart of Lancaster Arts and Craft show has been going strong for almost 40 years.

“We get about 20,000 customers to our fall show,” Hobday said. “In the spring, we get between 5,000 and 10,000 people. We’re trying to grow our spring show.”

The fall event attracts artists from as far away as Maine and Florida. CCAT will also be the beneficiary of that show, scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 5 and 6. Food will be available at the spring show from Root’s Market vendors, and wine will be sold by York-based Lavender Acres Winery.

Hobday said it’s important to her that the event support both the artists participating and the nonprofit beneficiary.

“I believe in education about art, because I was a teacher,” she said. “And this is not a money-making event for us. Everything goes to the charity. I always want my artists to be happy, and I want the charity to be happy. We work really hard to explain at the info booth what we’re trying to accomplish at this show.”

The show is free to attend, and parking is free. For more information, visit www.hlcshow.com.

he shared. “And now, as we are in our 31st year, we are experiencing parents that come and tell us that they went through Youth Field Day and now they are there with their child.”

Carruthers noted that she learned about the event’s history from a magazine article written in 1999 by Charlie Youtz.

“He wrote, ‘The number of youth involved in outdoor activities has been declining for years,’” Carruthers said. “In 1991, the late Bob McWilliams, information and education specialist with the PA Game Commission, had an idea.”

He and 25 other sportsmen held a meeting in the northwest regional office of the Game Commission and organized a free, oneday interactive event for youths. Since then, the concept spread across the state. In October of 1995, a group of 70 people formed what is now the Lancaster County Sportsmen For Youth, and the first local Youth Field Day was held in June 1996. Last year, there were 22 Youth Field

Days held over the summer throughout Pennsylvania.

Carruthers emphasized that the day would not be possible without the support of volunteers.

“These are people that love the outdoors and love to teach the kids how to love it too,” she said. “Many come from the sportsmen’s clubs in Lancaster County and have been volunteering since the Lancaster County Field Day was first held in 1996.”

Each year, the group also recruits new volunteers, including a participant now in his 20s who went through the program as a kid and now helps with either fly fishing or freshwater fishing. Certified instructors with the Canoe Club of Greater Harrisburg run the canoeing station, and game wardens operate the PA Game Commission station.

“And they have stories of kids who went through Youth Day and then became game wardens,” Carruthers remarked. “Many of the volunteers have stories from the day, stories of

seeing a young child come alive with excitement after they did something at the station. The volunteer shares with others, and we all keep saying, ‘This is why we can keep coming every year and give it our all, just to see young ones show excitement for an outdoor sport.’”

She added that the Lancaster County Youth Field Day is always held on the first Saturday of June, but the host sportsmen’s club is not announced until March of each year. The event is hosted by one of the four clubs that have a large pond.

The Youth Field Day is funded by donations from area sportsmen’s clubs, outdoor sporting goods stores and some local food companies.

“Also, a donation is given for free printing of pamphlets from a local printing

company,” Carruthers said. “The companies and sportsmen’s clubs are not asking for recognition. They are doing it to help keep this goal alive, to let kids experience and love the outdoors.”

Along with a free lunch, kids will receive a goodie bag at the end of the day. Youth Field Day will be held rain or shine, so participants should dress for the weather. Early registration is encouraged. Registration will close on Friday, June 5. If people register early but then cannot attend, they should update their registration by removing their name to make room for other participants.
