Little ones showcase big creativity

You are never too young to start creating, and now there’s a space where little crafters can showcase and sell their creations. The Little Monsters Bazaar, located within Prussian Street Arcade in Manheim and Lancaster, features products designed and made by youths ages 6 to 15.

The idea for the bazaar came from Wilder Ferrari, the daughter of Prussian Street owners Michael and Susan Ferrari. “It started out as an event that our daughter, who is now 8, wanted to do,” Michael explained. “She wanted to have a lemonade stand at our house, and we were like, ‘Oh, why don’t we do this and create a little business for you, and we’ll do it at the store?’ That evolved into making something like this available for other little kids who are makers and who want to have their own business.”

The first event was held outside behind the store at 49 N. Main St., Manheim, in 2021. It was so successful, the Ferraris decided to make it a permanent fixture inside the store just before Christmas of 2022. Prussian Street Arcade is a vendor marketplace where individual businesses have booths to sell products. All of the young vendors in The Little Monsters Bazaar sell their products within one stand. Kids apply to be part of the bazaar in the same way adult vendors do, by filling out an online application. Products for sale range from oneof-a-kind art to beaded jewelry, tiedyed items, home decor, holiday decorations and more. Wilder has a stand called Wild Lemons, and she makes “whatever strikes her fancy,” Michael said, adding, “She might make backpack accessories or little friendship pins.”

The Little Monsters Bazaar was so well received at the Manheim location, the Ferraris decided to open a Little Monsters Bazaar at their Lancaster location, 2200 Embassy Drive. It opened in April.

Bucket list encourages exploration of the region

You are invited to explore 55 activities throughout the region, including things to do, see and eat. Susquehanna National Heritage Area (SNHA) has created a unique bucket list to highlight activities and places in America’s 55th National Heritage Area.

“In March 2019, York and Lancaster counties were officially designated the nation’s 55th National Heritage Area,” explained Megan Salvatore, visitor service representative for SNHA. “National Heritage Areas are places where historical, cultural and natural resources combine to form a cohesive, nationally important landscape. It’s obvious why some places are designated as national parks, but National Heritage Areas are more complex. Our bucket list showcases some of the reasons why these two counties have been nationally designated.”

Among the activities on the list are learning about the power of wind turbines at the Turkey Hill Trail Overlook, exploring the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, learning about early science and medicine at Haldeman Mansion, checking out some of the oldest farmers markets in the country and searching for a whimsical gnome garden in Akron.

“The bazaar is about supporting small businesses and buying local, but it’s also about buying products and supporting kids who have their own business,” Michael said. “People can see, ‘Wow, there are some really crafty people out there.’”

Vendors within The Little Monsters Bazaar rotate about every

three months, Michael said, and at any given time there are between five and 10 vendors per location.

“We love the idea of a kid finding sort of their personal power and their creative voice by being able to watch people buy their products,” he stated. “I mean, there’s nothing like knowing that

your stuff is in somebody’s house or in somebody’s life because they found value in it. It’s just so affirming to know that people like what you are making.”

For more information about The Little Monsters Bazaar, including a vendor application, visit www.prussianstreet.com.

As Salvatore explained, the SNHA bucket list runs throughout the year. It includes seasonal activities and events, as well as yearround activities to explore. “Participants can share their bucket list experience by snapping photos, posting them to social media and tagging @susqNHA in the post,” she noted. If participants complete at least five items and submit their information on the SNHA website, they can receive an SNHA sticker.

Roberts to raise funds through event

Jim Roberts of Mount Joy will compete in the 2023 One Lap of America. This will be Roberts’ 14th time competing in the event, and as he did the past several years, he will raise funds for the PA Breast Cancer Coalition (PBCC). Over the years, Roberts has raised more than $44,000 in total for PBCC.

Roberts’ transit driver this year will again be fellow car enthusiast Gary “Duck” Drake from the Cincinnati area. Roberts and Drake will travel

to race tracks in Indiana, Ohio, Georgia, Tennessee, Texas, Oklahoma and Kentucky and then return to Indiana. They will travel approximately 3,600 miles for the event and almost 4,800 miles by the time Roberts arrives home again. Along the way, they will compete against more than 90 other teams.

In recognition of each community member who donates to Roberts’ effort, Roberts will put a sticker on the roof of the Corvette he will drive during the event; proceeds will benefit PBCC. The donor’s

SNHA started the bucket list idea to keep people in the region busy during the pandemic in 2020. The list focused specifically on Columbia that year and then branched out to include the river towns of Marietta and Wrightsville the following year. Last year was the first time the organization launched a bucket list covering the entire region. Salvatore came up with the tasks on the list, noting that they are engineered to explore partners and sites offering a diverse mix of heritage, culture, recreation and refreshments unique to the

region. A collaborative effort with the SNHA staff narrowed down the final 55 activities, she said, noting that number was chosen because the region is the 55th designated National Heritage Area.

“I would encourage residents to rediscover and learn new things about the region, using the Susquehanna National Heritage Area bucket list,” Salvatore remarked. “The bucket list tasks open conversations about our collective past and create fun talking points with visitors to the Columbia Crossing River Trails Center and Zimmerman Center for Heritage. It’s an interesting way for visitors to understand the national connections this region has woven throughout history.”

A digital version of the list can be found at www.susqnha.org. Paper copies are also available at the Columbia Crossing River Trails Center, 41 Walnut St., Columbia, and the Zimmerman Center for Heritage, 1706 Long Level Road, Wrightsville.

Car show slated in East Petersburg

On Saturday, May 6, the 14th annual Vagabonds Car Show will return to the East Petersburg Community Park, 6051 Pine St., East Petersburg. The free event will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and a rain date has been set for Sunday, May 7.

The car show will also include a variety of food trucks and vendors. Members of the Vagabonds Rod & Custom Club will sell hot dogs, East Petersburg Borough will offer breakfast sandwiches, and ice cream will be available to purchase from Scoops Ice Cream and Grille. Trophies and door prizes, consisting of gift cards and donations from vendors, will be awarded throughout the day. At 10 a.m., a cornhole tournament will be held;

event attendees will be able to register for a set cost per person, and the winner of the tournament will be awarded a cash prize.

During the show, Flamin’ Dick and the Hot Rods will perform classic rock music from the ’50s and ’60s. “People always love coming to see the cars, listening to the music and getting a bite to eat,” said Vance Spicer, vice president of the Vagabonds.

In addition to a spectacle of hundreds of cars, the event will incorporate a Chinese auction and a yard sale. A selection of items such as dishware, children’s toys and household goods will be available to purchase. The items that will be available have been donated by members of the Vagabonds and those in the local community, and the proceeds will

benefit Hospice & Community Care in Lancaster. “We’ve been supporting Hospice & Community Care for over 20 years,” Spicer said. “We chose to support them because it’s a local organization and that money benefits Lancaster.”

The car show is part of a series of community events offered by the borough in partnership with Vagabonds. Although this is the 14th year that the club and borough have organized the event together, members of the Vagabonds Rod & Custom Club have been hosting an annual car show for decades. The club was officially founded in 1958 and is based out of Landisville, although its members hail from across the county. To obtain membership, one must have a vehicle that has been customized either

through a unique paint job or body modification.

Vagabonds Rod & Custom Club members meet every other month to take group drives in their cars, with the group usually comprising several dozen vehicles. The group often selects a location ahead of time to drive to and stop for lunch, sometimes traveling as far as Maryland. The majority of Vagabonds Rod & Custom Club members drive customized hot rods that predate the ’80s, although there is no criteria for cars to be entered in the car show. “People come with

original stock Fords, new Corvettes and Japanese cars,” Spicer added. “Anyone can come, and everyone is welcome.”

Central tops E-town, Cocalico; Now 8-0

When your favorite sports team has their sights set on long postseason runs it is difficult to get excited over regular season wins but that is where the boys’ volleyball team and their fans find themselves. With the Barons looking to break past the PIAA2A quarterfinal round this season it is easy to overlook their pristine 8-0 mark. However, that would not be fair as seven of those eight wins have come by 30 sweeps, including the two most recent.

Central made quick work of Elizabethtown on the 20th, posting wins of 25-21, 25-13 and 2522 but had a bit more trouble dispatching Cocalico on the 25th. The Eagles pushed Manheim in game one with the Barons winning 25-22 and gave them a good scare in the 26-24 game three final. In between was a 25-14 Manheim win. Dylan Musser paved the way with a 40-assist, four ace night. Jacob Moyer added 12 kills and Colin Roher four digs.

SOFTBALL

The wide world of sports is filled with plenty of opportuni-

ties, both good and bad, and the softball team missed out on one of the good ones. That missed opportunity went down on April 24th when the Lady Barons dropped the second of three meetings with Section Three leading Donegal by an 11-5 final.

The Lady Indians got to Riley Hostetter early and often but only six of Donegal’s runs were earned thanks to four Manheim errors. That still left Hostetter with the loss for six innings of work. The Lady Barons were able to keep the game close until their bats went silent after a one run fourth made it a 6-5 affair.

Kayleigh Detz was responsible for that fourth inning run, adding to her second inning single giving her two RBI for the game. Mickey Lauver and Ava Kenneff also added run producing hits in the second while Hostetter pushed Central’s lone first inning run across with her single.

Manheim Central entered that Donegal game riding a six-game winning streak that included a 21-8 shellacking of Cocalico on the 21st. The game lasted just five innings as Central used 14 hits and four Lady Eagles errors

to invoke the 10-run rule and collect the win. Hostetter did allow eight runs and issued four walks but she countered with eight strikeouts and the win.

Addy Sheaffer had just two hits, but one was a three-run homerun in the third while the other was a two-run single in the fifth. Briana Mylin used a threerun blast of her own to account for the bulk of her four RBIs. Hostetter and Paige Garner each finished with three hits, but Garner added a run scoring single to her two run double to finish with three RBI while Hostetter mustered just the two run double for her two RBI game.

BASEBALL

The baseball team continues to collect wins like the valuable commodity they are, pushing their overall record to 10-5 on the strength of a six-game winning streak. The most recent was the most nerve racking as Manheim had to endure a seventh inning ELCO rally to hold on for a 10-8 win on the 26th.

Cayde Connelly got the start and the win and just missed the complete game victory. He pitched into the seventh, allowing the first three Raider runs in the frame and four total before giving way to Cole Lawhorne. Lawhorne struggled and managed just one out while surrendering the final four ELCO runs. Cael Martin stepped in to finish things off, earning the save for his five pitches. Connelly was part of a trio of two RBI Barons, collecting his with a second inning double and a third inning sac fly. Ky Watson fronted that quartet with his four-hit game while Brady Harbach and Chase Travitz each finished with just one hit and their two RBI.

A win over Donegal precluded the ELCO victory with Central picking up a 7-0 win on April 24th. Jared Murray was the star of the show, allowing four hits and no runs to go with 12 strikeouts and just one walk on his way to the win. Martin covered the seventh after Murray reached his pitch limit. Murray was also one of three Barons to finish with one hit and one RBI, but it was Colin Neiles and Connelly leading the way with two RBI apiece. Ty Clugston and Watson rounded

out the one RBI club.

Manheim Central picked up back-to-back wins on the 21st and 22nd, topping Cocalico and Governor Mifflin by a combined 10-6. The 6-3 victory over Governor Mifflin took place on the 22nd with Watson providing the offense. He had just two hits, but both were home runs, giving the junior four RBI for the game. Single RBIs from Clugston and Logan McGallicher rounded out the offense. Nolan Book got the start and the win despite only pitching two innings. Lawhorne and Trevor Lowe teamed up to cover the remaining five innings. The trio finished with seven strikeouts and four walks.

One day prior, the Barons slipped by Cocalico, 4-3, using a Murray single in the seventh to secure the win. Book and Travitz set the stage for Murray’s heroics with RBI singles of their own in the sixth, keeping the game knotted at 3-3. Martin ended up with the win, tossing two innings of relief after taking over for Connelly. The pair combined for eight strikeouts and three walks.

TRACK

The track and field teams closed out the month of April with the boys topping Lampeter-Strasburg 89-61 while the Lady Barons enjoyed a 99-49 win.

The Lady Barons claimed every event on the track except the 400m relay, starting with a win in the 3200m relay and ending with a 1600m relay win. In between were wins by Abbie Reed (100H, 300H), Milan Snell (100m, 200m, 400m), Julie Lindberg (1600m, 3200m) and Julia Kahler (800m). Snell and Reed joined Sarah Forry and Liz Voegele for the 1600m relay win while Forry, Lindberg and Kahler were joined by Reagan Ibach for the 3200m relay win.

Maddie Knier (high, long and triple jumps) claimed three of the five field wins with Laci Nelson (shot put) and Bella Sensenig (pole vault) nabbing the remaining two.

The boys were led by Kahlen Watt and Landon McGallicher who combined for six victories, three by each. McGallicher earned his wins in the 110H, the 300H and the 200m while Watt claimed the 100m as well as the high jump and long jump. Cameron Evans

was involved in the two remaining wins on the track, taking the 400m while also covering a leg on the winning 1600m relay.

Reed receives sports honor

Zachary Reed was one of seven track and field athletes from Lebanon Valley College, Annville, who were named AllRegion by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) for the 2023 Indoor Track and Field season. Reed is a resident of Manheim.

Reed finished fifth in the 60meter hurdles with a career-best time of 8.38 seconds at the Mini-Dip Invitational in January. Reed also earned AllRegion honors last year in the 60-meter hurdles and as part of the 4x400 meter relay team. This season, he was named Middle Atlantic All-Conference First Team in the 4x400 meter relay and All-Conference Second Team in the 60-meter hurdles.

Reed is a graduate of Manheim Central High School. He is pursuing a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Science in global studies and intelligence and security studies and political science.

Cruising with confidence

What are the benefits of riding a bike? How about a healthy dose of confidence, goal setting and personal growth? That’s the mission of Lifecycles, a nonprofit Christ-centered mentoring program committed to building young people of character through bicycling.

The organization kicked

off its ninth season on April 24. A girls’ team meets on Monday evenings at Warwick Township Municipal Park, 315 Clay Road, Lititz. Boys’ teams meet on Tuesdays at Riverfront Park, 551 Vinegar Ferry Road, Marietta; on Wednesdays at Warwick Township Municipal Park; and on Thursdays at Amos Herr Park, 1700 Nissley Road, Landisville. Groups ride from 6 to 8 p.m.

“This is a positive and encouraging environment to learn how to set your goals and grow with other teenagers,” said Lee DeRemer, who founded the organization with his wife, Marcie. “There’s no bullying, and everybody works together. Everyone is in a group for their skill level. We are open for boys or girls between the ages of 12 and 18, and everything we provide is 100% free - the bikes, the meals, the equipment, helmets, everything.”

Along with meeting once a week for their season, which runs through August, Lifecycles teens also participate in special challenge rides. Five teams will be riding during the last week in July and the first week in August, Lee said. One team will travel from Pittsburgh to Washington, D.C. Two boys’ teams and one girls’ team will each ride a loop around Lake Champlain on the border of New York and Vermont, covering 380 miles in seven days. “Our 15 most advanced riders will be riding from Portland, Maine, 530 miles all the way to Valley Forge, Pa.,” Lee noted.

In addition to the challenge rides and the weeknight rides, teens are also invited to participate in Saturday rides throughout Lancaster County. “These are opportunities to try something new and be out all day or almost all day long,” Lee said. “They are opportunities for mentoring and more confidence building.”

He emphasized that although this season has already begun, teens can join Lifecycles at any time. “We have a lot of kids who are involved in spring sports, and we tell them, ‘Hey, just wait until school is over and come on out that first week in June and start right up

Lee said the success of Lifecycles has relied heavily on volunteers, and the organization is always looking for more people to help.

“After nine years of doing this, it’s really wonderful to be part of the community where there’s so many people pitching in and so many different ways to help one another,” he remarked. “We are really thrilled to be a part of that.”
