hen hundreds of trucks hit the road on Saturday, May 9, they’ll be working to grant wishes. The 37th annual Make-A-Wish Mother’s Day Truck

At LifeCycles, a simple bike ride is the start of something bigger. With every mile, young riders build confidence, courage and resilience, skills that carry far beyond the road ahead. The nonprofit, which offers free long-distance cycling experiences for boys and girls ages 12 to 18, just kicked off its 12th season of transforming lives, one ride at a time.

Teams meet on Tuesdays at Riverfront Park, 551 Vinegar Ferry

Power Camps keep kids active over the summer. Power Camps allow kids to meet new people and make new friends. Power Camps help kids discover sports, improve athletic skills and foster a love for their games.

Power Camps also establish and encourage relationships with God.

Convoy will kick off at the Manheim Pennsylvania Auto Auction, 1190 Lancaster Road, Manheim. Truck parking, driver check-in and on-site registration will take place from 6 to 10 a.m. A silent auction and basket giveaways will be featured from 8 a.m. to noon.

Road, Marietta, and on Thursdays at Amos Herr Park, 1700 Nissley Road, Landisville. Both groups gather at 5:45 p.m. and finish up at 8 p.m. The season runs through mid-October.

“There are separate girls’ teams and boys’ teams, and each team has multiple ride groups based on skill level and strength, so there’s a place for teens of any level of development, including beginners,” said Lee DeRemer, LifeCycles director. Each evening, participants experience a ride, mentoring, a hot meal

A Family Fest will be held from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. At 11 a.m., there will be a mandatory safety meeting for convoy drivers, before remarks and a Wish Angel Remembrance at noon. The convoy will depart

“It’s about mind, body and soul,” said Diana Roth, an area representative of Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) and a co-director of the New Holland Power Camp. “There are so many life lessons in sports. Athletics can teach you so many lessons. It’s so good to get outside, move and have fun. Hopefully, we’re developing a love for being physical.”

This year’s edition of FCA’s annual Power Camps will be conducted from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. from Monday, June 15, to Thursday, June 18, on the athletic fields and inside of Petra Christian Fellowship, 565 Airport Road, New Holland. A later installment of the Power Camps will be presented from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. from Monday, July 13, to Thursday, July 16, at Manheim Brethren in Christ Church, 54 N. Penryn Road, Manheim.

There are costs involved with attending the camps, and lunch will be provided as part of the experience.

“We want campers to come away knowing more about Jesus. That’s the main purpose,” said Roth. “We want to encourage

and lots of encouraging coaching while making new friends.

“We provide free 24-speed bicycles, helmets, uniform shirts, safety lights, everything,” Lee said. “Each evening, approximately 25 girls and 10 women ride together, and 45 boys and 20 men ride together in ride groups of six to nine riders. We use a separate curriculum for girls and boys - the curriculum is focused on character development, life skills and spiritual growth.”

While riders of any skill level are encouraged to join LifeCycles, the more advanced riders are invited to participate in one of four summer challenge rides. Destinations will be Cape Cod and the Great Allegheny Passage, and two groups will travel from the Adirondack Mountains to northern Vermont and northern New Hampshire.

Based in Lancaster, LifeCycles is supported by Community Fellowship Church of Lancaster and by more than 100 people who believe in the organization’s mission. LifeCycles began in 2015, when Lee and his wife, Marcie, created the program to provide friendship, mentoring and bike riding, all with a faith focus.

LifeCycles is open to youths throughout Lancaster County. Kids can join the program at any time during the season, Lee said, noting that many people join throughout the spring and summer as other commitments at school end and their calendars open up.

“LifeCycles is a great way to meet friends, grow and do something you probably already enjoy,” he remarked. “Come to improve your skills, see new parts of Lancaster County and beyond in a safe and positive environment.”

Beyond supporting biking skills, LifeCycles provides encouragement for kids to step out of their comfort zone and believe in their ability to “do hard things,” the organization’s motto.

at 1:30 p.m., and the event will conclude at 3 p.m.

There is a new route for the convoy this year, said Lori Dietrich, director of development for Make-A-Wish in Lancaster.

The route will run west from Manheim on Route 283 to Tollhouse Road before looping back on Route 283 East and ending at the Esbenshade Road exit.

The convoy will no longer travel through Mount Joy. A map of the route may be found at https://tiny url.com/3rczvcks.

Good spots to view the convoy will include the Manheim Pennsylvania Auto Auction and LCBC Manheim, 2392 Mount Joy Road.

Dietrich said the convoy will include close to 400 trucks. Drivers can still register online at www.wishconvoy.org or in person on the day of the event.

collectors at the event and along the route,” Dietrich said. “Over the years, the convoy clowns have helped to raise thousands of dollars to grant wishes.”

Proceeds from the day will support granting life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses through Make-A-Wish Philadelphia, Delaware & Susquehanna Valley.

“Currently, there are 73 kids waiting on their wish to be granted in our Susquehanna Valley region, 29 of which reside right here in Lancaster County,” Dietrich shared. “Make-A-Wish relies 100% on the generosity of the community to be able to grant the wishes of critically ill children. Participating has a direct impact on local families.”

With headquarters in Phoenix, Ariz., Make-A-Wish is one of the world’s leading children’s wish-granting organizations. It serves children in all 50 states, as well as in more than 50 countries around the world. Since 1986, Make-A-Wish has granted more than 8,600 wishes.

“You can expect to be seen, valued and encouraged as you grow physically and spiritually,” Lee commented. “Many parents tell us that LifeCycles is the first thing that has captured their son’s or daughter’s attention, that they actually look forward to the next gathering.”

He encourages anyone who is interested in learning more to come out and try LifeCycles.

“We meet teens where they are and help them challenge themselves at their own pace of growth, physically, spiritually and mentally,” he said. “We focus intensely on safety and proper cycling skills to equip the teens for a life of enjoyable riding. … Come and try it. It’s free, and there are no tryouts. What have you got to lose?”

People of all ages are invited to come out for the Family Fest. Activities will include games, vendors, DJ entertainment, food trucks, costumed characters, the famous convoy clowns, a silent auction, a basket raffle, hundreds of trucks to see, and the kickoff of the truck convoy.

“The Family Fest is open to the public,” Dietrich remarked, “with free parking, free admission and free activities for families.” While past events charged for game tickets, each child will receive free game tickets this year, she added. A variety of food trucks will be on-site for the Family Fest, including Castenedas Food Truck, Drifters, Mocha Motion Coffee, Piper Belles BBQ and Walk-O Taco.

The festivities have a carnival-like atmosphere, enhanced by the Make-A-Wish clowns.

“The clowns help to spread joy to attendees and serve a very important role as donation

Last year, the convoy raised $461,386 for Make-A-Wish. This year, organizers have set a goal of raising $525,000.

“The truck convoy is a legacy event for our chapter, which is honoring its 40th anniversary in 2026,” Dietrich said. “The truck convoy was the first fundraising event organized 37 years ago, and it is amazing that the event lives on today. It plays an extremely important role in the chapter’s ability to grant local wishes. We are able to keep this event going due to the generous spirit of the local community.”

them to grow in their relationship with Him, learn the sport and grow in their sport. Kind of like, ‘Hey, I tried a new sport, I want to continue in the sport or try a different sport.’ We want them to be more confident.”

The sports being offered at the Power Camps include soccer, basketball, baseball, field hockey, volleyball, flag football and track and field, as well as outdoor events like BB gun shooting, archery, fishing, outdoor safety and hiking. The Power Camps are designed for youths between the ages of 8 and 12.

“We’re combining the love of Jesus and sports,” said Roth, a resident of New Holland. “There are a lot of positive vibes. It’s more than just about sports. Every day we have a theme day, and we have new sports this year. It’s a lot of fun. We have music playing, and we want campers to feel super welcomed. I’d love to have more and more kids come out and experience these opportunities. It’s not a competitive sports camp.”

More than 130 preteens are expected to attend the Power Camps.

A vast majority of the campers reside in Lancaster County, including the Garden Spot, Cocalico, Ephrata, Warwick and Lampeter-Strasburg areas.

“Some are repeaters who want to keep coming back,” said Roth. “They’re kids who love sports. A majority come from Christian homes. Some are amazing athletes. They’re looking for a fun, safe, godly experience.”

The Power Camps are staffed by 15 to 18 experienced coaches, many of whom have coached on the scholastic and collegiate levels. The coaches are ably assisted by more than 40 huddle leaders, local high school students, some of whom competed at Power Camps when they were younger.

“Our coaches do an amazing job,” said Roth. “We don’t just pick any coach. We want coaches who understand the sport. They’re working with high school students and elementary kids. They’re not looking for perfection. They’re looking to build their confidence and foster their love for the sport.”

“I love to see the high school kids (huddle leaders) I worked with kind

Author Program Set in Lititz

Isaac Fitzgerald will visit Lititz on Monday, May 18, to celebrate his new book, “American Rambler: Walking the Trail of Johnny Appleseed.” The event will take place at 6:30 p.m. at the Lititz Springs Inn, 14 E. Main St., Lititz.

The event will include a presentation by the author, a question-and-answer time, light refreshments, and time for book signings. A copy of the book is included in the ticket fee. The event is sponsored by Aaron’s Books, Earth to Lititz, and the Lititz Historical Foundation.

Fitzgerald was always captivated by Johnny Appleseed, drawn by family ties to the legend, his father’s larger-than-life stories, and a shared restlessness to leave home and discover what lies beyond. “American Rambler” follows Fitzgerald’s year-long journey from Massachusetts to Indiana following Appleseed’s path. The book blends memoir, history, and travelogue.

Fitzgerald is also the author of “Dirtbag, Massachusetts: A Confessional.” He appears frequently on the “Today” show, and his writing has appeared in The New York Times, The Atlantic, and numerous other publications. He lives with his wife on the North Fork of Long Island.

Tickets are available at www.aaronsbooks.com. Only books purchased through Aaron’s Books may be presented for signature at the event.
