Thinkof the Make-A-Wish Mother’s Day Truck Convoy, and you might think of a long line of trucks traveling down the roads of Lancaster County. That is certainly central to the event, said Terry Finch, event chairperson, but that is just part of a special day.

“Our event is anchored by the Convoy trucks and our extremely generous truck drivers, but it is so much more,” Finch shared about the event that kicks off at the Manheim Pennsylvania Auto Auction. “It’s a community celebration of our Wish Children, and we hope everyone who joins us can take part in the games and fun that happens inside the Auto Auction lanes.”

This year’s Make-A-Wish Mother’s Day Truck Convoy will take place on Sunday, May 14, at the Auto Auction, 1190 Lancaster Road, Manheim. Beginning at 9 a.m., a Family Carnival will feature food trucks, carnival games, music, mascots and Make-A-Wish merchandise sales. Across Auction Road from the main building and truck lot, there

will be a chicken dinner available f or drive-through pickup, Finch noted. “There is also an online auction running the entire week before the Convoy and ending at midnight the next day, featuring Wish Kid art, jewelry, golf foursomes, gift cards and much more,” she shared.

The Make-A-Wish event brings independent drivers and trucking companies from all over the Susquehanna Valley as well as from across the country to participate in the festivities that raise funds needed to grant 75% of the annual wishes in the Susquehanna Valley. Make-A-Wish Philadelphia, Delaware & Susquehanna Valley grants wishes for children with critical illnesses. Over the years, the Convoy has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars. “In recent years, our record fundraising was just over $600,000,” Finch noted. “Our goal for this year is $700,000.” She said organizers are hoping for 400 trucks to participate in the Convoy this year.

“Our drivers fundraise all year long,” she explained, “and the top fundraisers in dollars earned make up the top 30 drivers in the Convoy. They are the front row of trucks and will lead out

the event as they travel along the Convoy route.” The top driver will pull the Wish Angel trailer, which is a tribute to Wish Children in the chapter area who have passed away in the 34 years since the Convoy began. “Each year, we add names to stars on the trailer before it goes on the route,” Finch remarked. “During our 12 p.m. announcements at the stage, we also ask the top 30 drivers to put their hands on the trailer and have a moment of silence for our Wish Angels.”

W hen the Convoy heads out, Wish Children are invited to ride along with the drivers, said Finch, noting that up to 100 of them have joined drivers in the past.

The route will run from Manheim to Elizabethtown and Mount Joy, and Finch encourages people to watch the Convoy along the route and cheer on the Wish Children. She recommends viewing the Convoy at LCBC on Route 772 in Manheim, where there will be food trucks and special visitors, and anywhere along Main Street in Mount Joy.

From Friday, April 28, through Sunday, April 30, you can bid on a variety of unique items while raising funds to support Manheim Central students. The 20th annual MCFEE 4 Kids Auction will be hosted online by the Manheim Central Foundation for Educational Enrichment.

“We will have over 200 items to bid on,” said Amy Howett, executive director of MCFEE. “We have gift cards to restaurants, breweries, kids’ events and outings, kayaking, ice cream and so much more. We are focusing on Manheim establishments, as well as places all throughout Lancaster County. We have tickets for experiences, including a Fulton Theatre and Belvedere Inn dinner package. We have a Barnstormers package for 10 with a catered meal.”

One of the highlights of this year’s auction will be artwork created by 15 Manheim Central sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade students who participated in a class called Kind heARTs. They collaborated on drawings, paintings, collages and soft sculptures, and seven of their pieces will be auctioned off.

Come out to Ruhl’s Church, 4810 Elizabethtown Road, Manheim, on Saturday, May 6, and you can enjoy an all-you-can-eat breakfast that supports the church’s Mission Outreach Team. A strawberry and waffle breakfast will be served from 6 to 10 a.m., or until sold out, in the fellowship hall of the church. “The star is our strawberry waffles,” noted Gail Ruhl, who heads the Mission Outreach Team with her husband, Chuck. “We normally get our

strawberries from North Carolina, where they are fresh in season right now. We are also going to have pancakes, scrambled eggs as well as eggs to order, breakfast casseroles, bacon, sausage, homefried potatoes and beverages.”

Proceeds from the meal will benefit a mission trip church members will take in June. “We’re actually venturing into a new area we’ve never gone before,” Gail said. “We are going to be going to Vermont, near the capital, Montpelier. We’re going to be working alongside Central Vermont Mission.” Gail said the

It might be a total of 10 games or just more than half of their 2023 slate, but the Manheim Central softball team has experienced two different seasons. The Lady Barons opened

with losses in four of their first five games, including three straight to kick things off. Since then, Central has ripped off five straight wins to improve to 6-4 overall.

Manheim’s toughest test of that five-game run came on April 14th in a 4-2 win over Cocalico. Central needed a tworun sixth to regain the lead and secure the win. Brianna Mylin and Brynn Lehman accounted for those two runs with Kayleigh Detz and Paige Garner adding one RBI apiece. Riley Hostetter covered all seven innings, mowing down 17

Lady Eagles to collect the win.

Manheim Central broke open the flood gates for their April 17th win over Octorara, scoring in all six innings to secure a 22-12, 10-run rule victory. Hostetter picked up the win despite allowing eight runs over her five innings with Garner covering the final four Lady Braves runs and three outs.

Three different Lady Barons finished with three RBI, but it was Hailey Peterson leading the way with six RBI on four singles. Lehman, Hostetter and Mylin complied the three RBI club while Garner added two RBI on her fourth inning single.

Offense continued to rule in Manheim’s April 19th win over Garden Spot. The Lady Barons needed a mere three innings to topple Spot by a 24-2 final. Garner was the lone player to finish with three RBI while both Detz and Michaela Lauver tallied four RBI. Mylin topped them all with her two hit, five RBI game.

Hostetter enjoyed the run support, covering all but the final out which went to Garner.

TENNIS

The Baron tennis team closed out their 2023 regular season with a win, topping Ephrata by a 4-3 count on the 19th. Aaron Cassel picked up the lone singles win after teaming with Rodney Sauder for a number two doubles win. Ben Ginder and Owen Patten claimed the top doubles win while Zach Spangler and Jon Breinich took number three doubles, putting Central on the winning path.

One day prior the Barons were unbale to hang with Conestoga Valley, falling by a 7-0 final.

Central was unable to stay with Cocalico on the 17th, leading to a 52 loss. Sauder played a part in both team points, joining forces with Cassel for a number two doubles win before posting a singles victory.

VOLLEYBALL

Stop the presses...the boys’ volleyball team dropped their first set of 2023 during a 3-1 win over Garden Spot on the 18th. Central opened and closed with 25-15 wins and answered Spot’s 25-19 game two triumph with a 25-21 momentum stealing game three win. Dylan Musser finished with 26 assists and two aces while Jacob Moyer had eight kills and 10 digs.

Central had no such trouble with Lebanon on the 13th, rolling to a 3-0

sweep with wins of 25-8, 25-10 and 25-7. Musser posted 20 assists and 10 aces in the win while Landon Mattiace finished with six kills and one block.

BASEBALL

The baseball team shook off back-to-back losses with wins over Octorara and Garden Spot, setting their 2023 mark at 6-5.

The second half of the back-toback losses came on April 14 with Cocalico using an early push to secure the 9-0 win. Seven of those nine runs came on Cole Lawhorne’s watch meaning that despite only three coming as earned the righty still took the loss. Chase Travitz covered the remaining three innings with the pair combining for six strikeouts and four walks. Ty Clugston and Brady Harbach were the lone Barons to reach base on a hit.

Central righted their ship with a 6-3 win over Octorara on the 17th with Jared Murray leading the way.

The senior lefty struck out eight and walked two while scattering seven hits and allowing three second inning runs. Cael Martin pitched the final two innings, allowing just one hit while striking out three.

That three-run burst from the Braves put Central in a hole that took until the sixth to fully climb out. The comeback started in the third where Colin Neiles made it 2-0 with his RBI single after a wild pitch gave Central their first run. The comeback was completed in the sixth with Nolan Book and Ky Watson each driving in one run while Clugston pushed two more across for the 6-3 final.

The Barons enjoyed more breathing room on the 19th, posting a 9-0 win over Garden Spot. Travitz and Lawhorne teamed up, with Travitz getting the start, and the win for his five innings of work. Lawhorne pushed the Barons strikeout total to seven, adding his two to Travitz’s five.

Central essentially put the game away with a four run second inning highlighted by matching two-run singles from Watson and Book. That did not make the Barons’ hitless threerun burst in the fourth any less enjoyable. Manheim benefitted from two wild pitches and a Spartan error to extend their lead to 7-0. Clugston added a sac fly in the fifth while Murray tacked on a one run single in the sixth to finish the scoring.

TRACK

The track teams traveled to southern Lancaster county on April 17th to battle the Golden Mules in a Section Two showdown. The boys dropped their half of the showdown by a 91.5-58.5 final while the Lady Barons cruised to a 94-56 win.

Landon McGallicher was the star for the boys, collecting two solo wins to go with his part in the victorious 1600m relay. He claimed the 110H in 15.2 and the 300H in 40.9 and teamed with Cameron Evans, Grahason Lindberg and Ryan Kenneff for the 1600m relay win. Kenneff picked up the only other win on the track with his 2:06.8 in the 800m. Zach Hahn claimed the final win, tossing the javelin 145-3.

As the final would suggest, wins were plentiful for the Lady Barons starting with Maddie Knier and her wins in the high jump, long jump, and javelin. Lacie Nelson in the shotput and Bella Sensenig in the pole vault finished the field wins for Central.

Two relay wins helped the cause with Julia Kahler, Sarah Forry, Julianna Lindberg, and Reagan Ibach taking the 3200m relay while Abbie Reed, Forry, Emma Herman and Milan Snell captured the 1600m relay in 4:23. Reed branched out on her own for wins in the 100H and 300H with Forry adding an 800m win and Snell a 400m victory.

The Barons spent Saturday April 15th in Landisville for the 19th Annual Black Knight Invitational, collecting nine podium finishes. McGallicher was the lone member of the boys’ team to reach the podium, finishing second in the 110H with a 14.98.

Knier made two podium trips, collecting silver for her work in the high jump and long jump. Nelson added a third-place finish in the shot put while Sensenig took fifth in the pole vault. Snell finished fourth in the 100m with a 12.86.

Central nearly turned the podium Maroon for the 100H presentation, occupying three of the eight spots. Reed took the top spot with a 16.25, Liz Voegele claimed fifth with a 16.66 while Kylie Mattiace settled into eighth thanks to her 17.10.

mission team members were searching for mission ideas when they came upon this one, and it seemed like a good fit. She noted that Central Vermont Mission has been working in the area since 2011, when it formed right after the region was hit by Tropical

Storm Irene. “This is ongoing even from then, and I think that might surprise a lot of people,” Gail remarked. “When we say we’re going to volunteer in that area, they may think, ‘What has happened there recently?’ but it takes years and years to recover from disasters. At the beginning of a disaster, there are a lot of volunteers and a lot of money, and then that all dries up, but the need is still there.” The group will be serving low-income families and the elderly, helping with construction or remodeling and maintenance work. New this year, they are also going to be helping to feed the homeless in the area by preparing lunch and distributing it to them.

As for the breakfast, no reservations are required, but Gail recommends coming early because items sell out.

“People can expect some really good food, and it’s just a really great place to come even if you’re by yourself or you’re a couple or you have a few friends that you get together,” she commented. “It’s a great environment just to sit and socialize, and it’s also a good opportunity if you’ve never been to the church to ask some of us questions about our church or look around. Or, if you’re interested in mission work, even though our group is mainly people from our church, we’re certainly not against others joining us, so we are willing to share our experiences with people and invite them along or even to come to church if they feel like it.”

There is a cost for the breakfast, with separate prices for adults and children ages 4 to 10. There is no charge for children age 3 and under. For more information, visit http://ruhlschurch.org or call the church office at 717-665-3400.

“This year we have also brought back our exciting premier packages, which are larger packages to bid on,” Howett explained. “We have a Phillies Extravaganza package, which includes tickets to a game and a Visa gift card. We have an outdoor pizza oven, which was donated by the PTO. We have a Summer Fun Brumate package. We have three brand-new Lancaster County handmade Amish quilts. We have a Solo Stove Ranger package.”

Howett emphasized that the event would not be possible without a variety of sponsors. Sponsors include Manheim Pennsylvania Auto Auction, Ruhl Insurance, Longenecker’s True Value, Buch Funeral Home, DDMP Investment Advisors, Rohrer’s Inc., Lancaster Toyota Mazda, Lancaster Nissan and PricewaterhouseCoopers.

All proceeds from the auction will fund teacher and student grants.

“Last year, we funded 27 grants at over $100,000,” Howett said. Projects included a new advanced broadcasting studio in the high school, virtual field trips, a pollinator garden at the middle school, Junior Achievement programs for students throughout the district and ukuleles for elementary school students. The theater program, Baron Stage, was able to purchase all new sound and microphone equipment, and funds from the auction also provided mobile podcasting stations for the district.

Howett emphasized that MCFEE works hard to provide funding for projects at every grade level so that the majority of students can benefit from the funding.

She also noted that the virtual online auction is user-friendly, and anyone can easily bid from anywhere. Winning bidders may pick up their items at the Manheim Farm Show building off Adele Avenue in Manheim during the week following the auction. For more information on the auction, visit https://mcfee4kids.org. Once the auction goes live on April 28, visit www.bidpal.net/mcfee4kids to participate.

UDS Foundation plans gala

The UDS Foundation will hold its annual gala on Saturday, May 13, from 6 to 9 p.m. at Lancaster Country Club, 1466 New Holland Pike, Lancaster.

The event will include a cocktail reception with passed hors d’oeuvres followed by a seated dinner with a cash bar. Attendees can also enjoy exclusive bidding opportunities on live and silent auction items as well as giveaway drawings.

Separate fees have been set for individual tickets, a table of eight and a table of 10. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit www.udservices.org/gala23.
