Auction will support students and teachers

Last year, 31 teacher and school grants totaling almost $100,000 were funded by proceeds from the annual Manheim Central Foundation for Educational Enrichment (MCFEE) auction.

You can support students and teachers in the Manheim Central School District by participating in this year’s event. The MCFEE 4Kids Virtual Auction will be held from 12:01 a.m. on Saturday, April 26, through 9:30 p.m. on Sunday, April 27.

The auction will feature overnight stays; a Mother’s Day package; Phillies and Orioles game tickets; a tailgater’s package; private vineyard tastings

and tours; a Solo stove campfire set; Amish handmade quilts; golf packages; and gift cards to local restaurants, retail stores, entertainment and family-friendly experiences. Themed baskets

and a cash giveaway will also be featured.

More than 200 items will be up for bid, said Amy Howett, executive director of MCFEE.

“(We have) handcrafted

birdhouse nesting boxes made by the fourth-grade Doe Run nature club students,” she said, noting that the project was funded by a MCFEE grant. Wood and metal items crafted by high school tech-ed students will also be featured.

Last year’s auction raised $99,500, providing funds for a variety of grants. Initiatives made possible by the grants included a high school facility dog, an elementary school book vending machine, science microscopes, an art studio, Junior Achievement programs and an international culture day. Author visits from Heather Fox and Jonathan Stutzman, virtual field trips and video conferences were also supported by the auction proceeds.

“If you’re looking for a getaway that’s within driving distance of home, this is the perfect place to find it,” said Wendy Royal, organizer of the PA Family Travel Fair.

“Come here and see what’s right in your backyard.”

The PA Family Travel Fair will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 3, at Spooky Nook Sports Complex, 75 Champ Blvd., Manheim.

The event will feature free entry and free parking.

Organized by Where & When Pennsylvania, a free seasonal travel magazine, the PA Family Travel Fair will spotlight more than 50 vendors.

Children’s choirs to present concerts

The Mennonite Children’s Choir of Lancaster (MCCL) has announced its spring concert series, “Morning & Evening: Songs for the Everyday.” The performers are children and youths in grades two through 12.

The MCCL choirs will perform at Neffsville Mennonite Church, 2371 Lititz Pike, Lancaster, on Tuesday, April 29, at 7 p.m.; Saturday, May 3, at 4 p.m.; and Sunday, May 4, at 4 p.m. The season will conclude with a concert on Sunday, June 8, at 7 p.m. at Mount Gretna Tabernacle, Third Street and Glossbrenner Avenue, Mount Gretna.

The programs will feature music focused on the presence of God in day-to-day life, from the Georgia Sea Islands spiritual “Yonder Come Day” to Tallis’ night-time prayer, “Glory to Thee, My God, This Night.” Other selections will include Dan Forrest’s “Cry No More” and Keith Hampton’s “Celebrate!” as well as music featuring texts from the book of Psalms. The repertoire will include a range of works from modern compositions by composers from Nigeria and Argentina to centuries-old music by Bach and Handel.

MCCL is a community choral arts program serving more than 160 children and youths from kinder -

garten through grade 12. Current members represent 55 congregations, 45 schools, and 15 denominations. MCCL’s goal is to train singers to glorify Jesus Christ through excellent choral music while fostering character and community. MCCL views music as a gift from God and seeks to equip children and youths for a lifetime of worship and service to the church and community through Christ-centered repertoire that reflects the musical diversity of the church around the world and through time.

The performing choirs, for those in grades two through 12, are led by artistic director Rosemary Siegrist Blessing and

directors Sarah Wingard and Galen Kauffman. The classes, for those in kindergarten through grade 12, are led by directors Monica Carlson and Sarah Smith. MCCL is a program of Lancaster Mennonite School, serving children and youths from Lancaster,

Chester, York, and Berks counties. Tickets are not required; a freewill offering will be received. For more information, visit https:// mennonitechildrenschoir .org/performances/, email mccl@lancastermennonite .org, or call 717-455-7025.

The Mennonite Children’s Choir of Lancaster

Along with strawberries and waffles, the meal will feature pancakes, eggs, breakfast casseroles, bacon, sausage, home-fried potatoes and assorted beverages.

“The Mission Outreach Team prepares and serves all the food,” said Gail Ruhl, who is a Mission Outreach Team coordinator with her husband, Chuck. “Our team includes members of Ruhl’s Church and other churches in our community.”

All proceeds raised by the event will be used to offset the costs involved with the group’s annual mission trip. Those costs include food, transportation and project money, Gail said.

“This year, our team will be traveling to North Carolina to help those severely impacted by Hurricane Helene during the fall of 2024,” she stated. “This storm hit primarily the western region of the state and caused major destruction of infrastructure and residential areas across many counties. We have not yet been told what our tasks will be, but our hope is that we can serve the people in need by assisting with either cleanup or rebuilding homes.”

The church’s mission trips are intergenerational and offer an opportunity for youths and adults to learn from each other while serving alongside one

another, Gail noted. Both Gail and Chuck have been serving as mission team coordinators for almost 20 years.

Gail said support from many people is required to make the breakfast fundraiser happen.

“We are very thankful for several business donors from the community who are supplying food items for this breakfast fundraiser,” she stated. “We appreciate these generous donations.”

The breakfast typically draws a large crowd, and Gail encourages people to come early before items sell out.

“Come out to enjoy some delicious homecooked food and support a worthy cause,” she said. “Bring your friends and family and relax while you eat your fill. Members of our mission team would love to spend some time answering any questions you may have about past trips or even explain how you can join the team on future trips.”

No tickets or reservations are needed for the breakfast. There are separate prices for adults and children ages 5 to 12. There is no charge for children age 4 and under. For more information, visit www.ruhlschurch .org or call the church at 717-665-3400.

Arm of Hope 5K will support children in Ghana

Sign up for the Arm of Hope 5K, and every step you take will provide education, mentorship and hope to children living in the slums of Ghana, Africa.

The 12th annual race will take place on Saturday, May 3, at Hope Community Church, 1806 Harrisburg Ave., Mount Joy. Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m., and the race will step off at 9 a.m.

“This inspiring event offers participants an opportunity to turn their strides into life-changing support for children living

in poverty,” said Greg Grove, who is coordinating the race with Keith Franz. The 5K will feature a flat course, ideal for both runners and walkers. A variety of door prizes will be offered, along with baked goods for the top finishers in each age bracket. The top male and top female overall finishers of the race, along with winners in the master’s brackets - for those over age 40 - will receive a handcrafted wooden trophy from Ghana, Grove said.

A chicken barbecue will be available to purchase by donation so participants

can take lunch home with them. The meal will include a chicken leg and thigh, a baked potato, a homemade roll and a whoopie pie. Pickup for the chicken barbecue will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and the barbecue is open to members of the public even if they are not participating in the 5K. The chicken barbecue is available for preorder only by Sunday, April 27. To order, visit www.armofhopein ghana.org/bbq.

The event is a fundraiser for the Arm of Hope camp in Ghana, which provides weeklong camps for students of elementary and high school age. Camp provides an opportunity for children to get out of the slums of Ghana and have fun, all while learning about the love of Jesus.

“This will be the 11th year for the camp,” Grove shared. “The first year, there were 190 campers over two weeks. This year, from July 27 to Aug. 8, we are expecting 1,000!”

Arm of Hope is a ministry that provides food, education and health care to children in need.

“The goal of the camp is to give kids an all-day Bible school-type experience ... with a safe place to get three meals a day; a mattress to sleep on; fun games; sports; Bible lessons; worship; crafts; teaching time; small group time; and special days and events like a bonfire, beach day and a soccer tourna -

ment,” Grove shared. “It’s really a reflection of Arm of Hope’s mission, which is, ‘To stretch arms of compassion to children living in poverty in the slums of Ghana, providing them with the opportunity of education and introducing them to the love of Jesus, giving them real hope for their futures.’”

Online advance registration is requested for the 5K and will guarantee a race T-shirt, but race-day registration will also be accepted. The deadline for registering online is Thursday, May 1.

To register, visit www .armofhopeinghana.org/5k. Grove also encouraged people to sponsor a participant at the same website.

Gables Estate, Cherry Crest Adventure Farm in Ronks and Oregon Dairy in Lititz are just a few of the local participants.

Over the years, Royal has enjoyed watching people return annually to the event to learn more about what’s in our state, and she likes seeing people discover something new.

“I think people are shocked at all the things you can do in Pennsylvania,” she said. “People don’t know that Jimmy Stewart was from Indiana, Pa., and there is a whole museum dedicated to him there. They do an ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ festival in the winter. … We have

beaches in Pennsylvania, too. Presque Isle Park in Erie has 13 beaches, including Sunset Beach, which has the most gorgeous sunsets you’ll ever see.”

Above all, she noted, the PA Family Travel Fair is a family-friendly, fun way to learn more and find vacation ideas.

“There’s no selling, no pressure,” Royal said. “You don’t have to buy anything or sign up for anything. Just come, have a conversation with the vendors and pick up information to start planning your next trip.”

Scholarships for organ lessons available

The Harrisburg Chapter of the American Guild of Organists will offer a limited number of Shenk Scholarships this summer to provide free instruction in organ playing. Piano students especially are invited to learn to play a different kind of keyboard instrument.

The scholarships will provide the equivalent of ten weeks of half-hour lessons with professional organists in the Harrisburg area. At the end of the lessons, the students will have an opportunity to participate in a recital for their family, friends, and chapter members.

The Shenk Scholarship is open to students entering grade four through those completing grade 12. Several places are available for college students not majoring in organ. The ability to read music is crucial, so having some experience with singing or playing an instrument is recommended.

The deadline for application is Wednesday, April 30. A short application form must be submitted, and a recorded audition must be uploaded with the application. For more information, visit www .harrisburgago.org/edu cation or andrewjames meade@gmail.com.

The Shenk Scholarship Fund was established in 2002 by the late Melvin Shenk in memory of his mother, Violette Shenk, to encourage qualified young school students to study the organ and to develop the skills and commitment to serve as church organists.

The Harrisburg Chapter of the AGO has nearly 100 members, ranging from those who love the organ but do not play to part-time or substitute church organists to full-time musicians and teachers with advanced degrees.

For more information on the chapter, visit www .harrisburgago.org.

Motorists urged to avoid distracted driving

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), Pennsylvania State Police (PSP), Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PA Turnpike), and Pennsylvania Insurance Department (PID) are sharing resources and encouraging safe driving as part of Distracted Driving Awareness Month, April. Motorists are urged to avoid all distractions and put down their phone while driving. They are also reminded of Senate Bill 37 - known as Paul Miller’s Law - which Gov. Josh Shapiro signed on June 5, 2024. Effective June 5, 2025, the law prohibits the use of handheld devices while driving, even while stopped temporarily due to traffic, a red light, or another momentary delay.

Paul Miller’s Law prohibits any driver from using a handheld cell phone while driving a motor vehicle. Drivers can still use their phones to alert emergency responders and, if they are using hands-free technology, to make phone calls, use a GPS, and listen to music. Pennsylvania already prohibits drivers

from using mobile devices to send, read, or write textbased communications while their vehicle is in motion.

The law is named for Paul Miller Jr., who was killed in a crash with a tractor trailer in 2010 in Monroe County as the result of a distracted driver who reached for a phone while driving. Since Paul’s death, his mother, Eileen Miller, has become a national advocate for stronger laws to curb distracted driving.

Drivers are encouraged to follow several safety tips. If they are expecting a text message or need to send one that cannot wait, they should pull over and park the car in a safe location before using a cell phone. Drivers may also consider allowing a passenger access to the phone to respond to calls or messages.

People should not engage in social media scrolling or messaging while driving.

Cell phone use is habit-forming. Anyone who is struggling to not text and drive may activate his or her phone’s Do Not Disturb feature, silence notifications, or put the

phone in the trunk, glove box, or back seat of the vehicle until arriving at the destination.

Cell phone use is not the only distraction while driving. Anything that takes people’s attention away from driving, their eyes off the road, or their hands off the wheel is a distraction.

For more information on distracted driving, visit www.penndot.pa.gov/ safety.

PennDOT seeks feedback from the public

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is seeking the public’s feedback on the agency’s services this winter at www.surveymonkey .com/r/2025PDWinter. The survey will be available through Monday, April 28, and should take about five minutes to complete. All responses are anonymous.

The 16-question survey asks respondents about their timeline expectations for safe and passable roadways, how they rank snow-removal priorities, and how they rate PennDOT’s winter services. Respondents are also asked how they receive PennDOT roadway information and whether or how they use the state’s 511PA traveler information services. During the winter, www.511pa.com offers its standard traffic and incident information while adding PennDOT plow-truck locations, winter roadway conditions, and other services.

For more information about PennDOT, visit www.penndot.pa.gov.
