Student-Grown Plants

Will Take Root at Sale

All semester long, students in the Greenhouse Management class at Manheim Central High School have been hard at work cultivating a wide

variety of plants. The public is invited to enjoy the fruits of their labor at the annual plant sale, which will be held from 1 to 6 p.m. on Fridays, May 1 and 8, and from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturdays, May 2 and 9. The sale will take place at the

greenhouse located on Adele Avenue at the high school.

“We focus on heirloom varieties and have over 60 different kinds of tomato plants and over 30 types of peppers,” shared Alex Vazquez, a senior who is a member of the

Sweet strawberries, warm waffles and community service will be on the menu when Ruhl’s Church serves up its annual fundraising breakfast.

The church will host its all-youcan-eat breakfast on Saturday, May 2, from 6 to 10 a.m. or until sold out, at 4810 Elizabethtown Road, Manheim.

Along with strawberries and

waffles, the menu will also include pancakes, scrambled eggs and eggs to order, breakfast casseroles, bacon, sausages, home-fried potatoes and assorted beverages.

Hope Runs From Mount Joy to Ghana

From Mount Joy to Ghana, an Arm of Hope stretches across continents to reach children in need. That connection will come to life locally on Saturday, May 2, when the Mount Joy-based nonprofit invites the community to step up and step out for its annual 5K. The event will be held at Hope Community Church, 1806 Harrisburg Ave., with the race kicking off at 9 a.m. Greg Grove, who directs the race with Keith Franz, encouraged people to sign up for the event.

“It’s a great family-friendly event, flat, easy course with door prizes and a great cause,” he said. “All ages are welcome - walkers, runners, strollers, pets, everyone!”

Along with a variety of door prizes, baked goods will be presented to the top finishers in each age bracket.

The top male and top female overall finishers of the race, along with winners in the master’s brackets - for those over age 40will receive a handcrafted wooden trophy from Ghana, Grove said.

A chicken barbecue will be available to purchase by donation so participants can take lunch home with them. The meal will include a chicken leg and thigh, a baked potato, a homemade roll and a whoopie pie. Pickup for the chicken barbecue will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and the barbecue is open to members of the public even if they are not participating in the 5K. The chicken barbecue is available for preorder only by Friday, April 24. To order, visit www.armofhopeinghana.org/bbq.

for the Arm of Hope camp in Ghana, which provides food, education and health care to children in need through weeklong camps for students of elementary and high school age. The camps provide an opportunity for children to get out of the slums of Ghana and have fun, all while learning about the love of Jesus.

“Arm of Hope changes lives,” Grove shared, noting that the July camp expects 1,100 campers this summer at a cost of approximately $60 per child. “A team from the U.S. led by Cheryl and Mike Zimmerman - Cheryl is the U.S. director of Arm of Hope - goes every year to help with the two-week camp.”

Grove has experienced the power of the program firsthand.

“I have been to summer camp six times in the last 11 years, including last summer, and I have witnessed kids grow up and get involved as leaders as adults in Arm of Hope and their community,” he shared. “As I said, Arm of Hope changes lives. I have seen it.”

Storytelling Event

Planned

Luther Acres, a Luthercare community, will host “Moments to Remember,” a resident-produced storytelling event, on Wednesday, April 29. The program will take place from 3 to 5 p.m. in the community room at the Luther Acres Towne Center, 250 St. Luke Drive, Lititz.

“Moments to Remember” will feature 12 Luther Acres residents sharing personal stories that range from humorous to nostalgic. Residents will speak from a lectern using a microphone. At a previous event, a 99-yearold resident captivated the audience by sharing the story of learning to ride motorcycles at age

38, demonstrating that it is never too late to try something new. To open the program, a resident will play the piano to accompany a vocal performance from a resident quartet singing “Moments to Remember” by the Four Lads of the 1950s. The audience will be invited to join in for a reprise of the song. During a similar moment at the last “Moments to Remember,” more than 150 attendees joined together in song. The event is free of charge, and community members of all ages are welcome to attend.

Attendees are asked to register by Friday, April 24, at 717-626-8376.

“The proceeds from our sale go directly back to our greenhouse to maintain and develop our plant program for the students in the agriculture department,” Alex said.

Taught by Seth Kensinger, the Greenhouse Management class is an elective for 10th-, 11th- and 12th-grade students.

“The class is a semester long and teaches us about greenhouse management to prepare us for the horticulture industry,” Alex explained. “We also partner with the high school

year we choose a destination that has either been hit with a natural disaster or is in a community where the residents are not financially able to repair or upkeep their homes.”

She noted that this year is unique because the mission team is planning two mission trips for the first time.

“For several years now, some members of our core team of volunteers have been requesting a mission trip to Guatemala to help at Kairos House. Our church spent many years serving with this organization in the past, and some of those who served there before were very interested in returning,” Gail said. “We knew that a mission trip to another country would not be for everyone, so we thought offering two mission trips would be a good idea. Fortunately, we have help with the planning of both trips.”

One mission team will serve the community of Charleston, W.Va., from Sunday to Saturday, June 21 to 27. That team will help with home repairs and improvements for elderly and low-income families. Another mission team will serve with Kairos Ministries in Guatemala City, Guatemala, from Saturday, July 4, to Sunday, July 12.

“This team will be helping to improve the living conditions for the residents of Kairos House, which is a home away from home for families who often travel great distances from small villages to the city for medical treatments for life-threatening illnesses, by repairing and replacing structural issues that will address safety concerns while providing a more comfortable, welcoming appearance to the house,” Gail said. “All proceeds from this breakfast will be used to offset the cost of both mission trips, which includes building materials,

Life Skills students once a week, as they assist us in every part of the process of growing plants.”

Students have learned how to manage a greenhouse and have studied plant growth and the conditions necessary for success.

“The greenhouse is only three years old, so it has the latest technologies with regards to temperature controls and watering system,” Alex said. “The class has taken all responsibilities of growing the plants, when to water them, scouting them for insect damage or disease and controlling the temperature. We have learned about various

propagation methods and transplanting small plants into larger pots.”

He invites people to come to the sale to see firsthand what the students have accomplished this semester.

“We work really hard and enjoy the process of growing plants to be sold to the people of our community,” Alex said. “There is a deep sense of satisfaction from providing these plants for other folks to enjoy.”

The Ruhls have been organizing and participating in mission trips for many years.

“The Mission Outreach Team from Ruhl’s Church consists of individuals from our church and throughout the community who are of like mind to spread the love of God through service to others,” Gail commented. “We have worked together for many years completing various projects for congregation members, as well as people in our community. We have served together locally, nationally and now globally. We are thankful for our church family and community members who are faithful, generous supporters of our Mission Outreach Team. Their continual prayer and financial support is a blessing to us, our community and to all those we serve.”

BUYING Classic, Muscle & Sports Cars Jeff Gast,

“Our church strives to provide a relaxing, welcoming atmosphere for folks to fellowship together,” she said. “There will also be a chance for attendees to ask about our past or upcoming mission trips or to inquire about joining our mission team in future endeavors. It is also a great opportunity for people to support a worthwhile cause. Not everyone who appreciates the mission work our group does is able to join us in our efforts, but attending and supporting our fundraisers gives people the opportunity to walk alongside us as we serve others.”

Tickets or reservations are not required for the breakfast. It is recommended to come early for the breakfast for the best selection of food. There are separate admission prices for adults and for children ages 5 to 12. There is no admission charge for children age 4 and under. Additional donations will also be accepted.

The breakfast will be held in the fellowship hall of Ruhl’s Church. The church and parking area are both fully handicapped-accessible.
