Support Christian education at benefit auction

Spring is a busy season for many of us, so take a load off your plate and make plans to pick up dinner on Friday, May 5. Mt. Hope Nazarene Retirement Community will host a drive-through chicken barbecue dinner in the parking lot of LCBC, 2392 Mount Joy Road, Manheim, from 4 to 6 p.m. The meal will include Peters’ Barbecue fire-grilled chicken, gourmet cheesy potatoes, savory baked beans with bacon, a dinner roll with butter, Mt. Hope’s famous coleslaw and a dessert. Proceeds from the dinner will benefit Mt. Hope, a 50-bed skilled nursing facility and rehabilitation center providing care for seniors and people with disabilities regardless of their ability to pay.
BY CATHY MOLITORISForalmost half a century, Manheim Christian Day School has welcomed the community to an annual auction and weekend of festivities for the whole family. The 47th annual Benefit Auction and Family Fun Days will be held on Friday, April 28, and Saturday, April 29, at the school, 686 Lebanon Road, Manheim.
The event will begin on Friday with a pork barbecue dinner available for dine-in or drive-through pickup from 3:15 to 6:30 p.m. The meal will include Peters’ Barbecue pulled pork, a baked potato, applesauce, a pickle, a homemade roll, a dessert and a drink. Advance tickets may be purchased by calling the school at 717-665-4300. Limited meals will be available on the day of the event.
At 4 p.m. on April 28, a silent auction will begin. It will run through noon on Saturday, April 29. An official welcome ceremony will be held at 6:30 p.m., followed by a Gummy Bear Challenge, which will pit teams of students and staff members against each other.
At 7 p.m. on Friday, class projects and special experiences will be featured. Each grade will have a project that will be auctioned off, explained Jen Kosydar, events coordinator. These will include the fourth-grade Seed to Sow project, where each student is given money to use toward creating and selling a product in the month leading up to the auction. The product is then auctioned off at the event. Other class projects to be auctioned include a picnic table, fire pits with custom trays, a handmade quilt, photo books and yard games,
all personalized by individual classes. Saturday’s events will kick off at 8:30 a.m. with doughnuts, coffee and juice available for purchase. The live auction will begin at 9 a.m., with a variety of items up for grabs. Tools and outdoor items, including hunting, camping and fishing gear as well as lawn and garden equipment, will be featured at 10 a.m. General merchandise and gift certificates will be spotlighted at 11 a.m. Children’s activities, including inflatables, a petting zoo, barrel train rides, a giant slide, face painting and games, will run from 9 to 11 a.m., with the inflatables available until 3 p.m. At 11:15 a.m., a candy launch will be held, and at 12:30 p.m., live entertainment by character juggler Chris Ivey will be featured. Also at 12:30 p.m., Mrs. Shelly will lead sports games.
A variety of food will be available for purchase all weekend, including Gene Wenger’s hamloaf sandwiches, hamburgers, hot dogs, chicken corn soup, french fries, milkshakes, soft-serve ice cream and homemade baked goods.
Last year’s event raised $215,000, Kosydar noted, and organizers hope to exceed that amount this year. Proceeds are used to make Christian education affordable to more families, she said, as well as to purchase new technology and fund essential building projects.
“Come out for great merchandise, experiences, fun kids’ activities and food,” Kosydar remarked. “There’s something for everyone.”
Times for the auctions are subject to change. For more information on the event, visit www.manheim christian.org.
“Most residents at Mt. Hope do not have financial resources to cover the cost of their care, and a growing gap of about $150 a day exists between what a resident is able to pay and the cost of daily care,” explained Kris Wilson, director of advancement. “That’s why these fundraisers are so very important for Mt. Hope and the care we provide. Any gift to Mt. Hope is appreciated and makes a huge difference.”
Wilson noted that a new opportunity has been created to support Mt. Hope on an ongoing basis. “This spring is the perfect time to join in a monthly partnership with Mt. Hope,” she stated. “We’re kicking off our monthly giving opportunities and welcoming new growth, which brings exciting energy and life to Mt. Hope. Our monthly giving program enables Mt. Hope to finance our day-to-day activities and cover daily operating expenses.”

Kalyssa McAdams, a student at Manheim Central High School in Manheim, has been awarded an all-expenses-paid summer study trip to Germany.
Kalyssa was selected as a national winner after scoring in the 96th percentile on the Level 3 2023 National German Exam for High School Students sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of German (AATG). Over 12,300 students participated in the program. After qualifying with a high score on the National German Exam, she submitted responses to several short essay questions in German and in English and was then interviewed by a committee made up of high school teachers and college professors of German.
Kalyssa is one of 48 German students selected from across the U.S. to receive the award, along with eight additional students who are receiving a similar award. The study trip includes round-trip air transportation to Germany from New York or Newark, a homestay with a host family, and excursions to places of cultural and historical significance. The study trip, now in its 62nd year, is made possible through a grant from the Federal Republic of Germany.
Kalyssa and the other winners will travel to Germany this summer. Kalyssa is a student of Jennifer Campbell, German teacher at Manheim Central High School.
Founded in 1926, the AATG represents German teachers at all levels of instruction. The AATG is dedicated to the advancement and improvement of the teaching of the language, literature, and culture of the German-speaking countries.
On the baseball diamond, the Barons slipped a win over Octorara between losses to Manheim Township and ELCO, leaving the Barons 4-4 on the year.
Jarred Murray spearheaded the win over Octorara, striking out 14 over his five and one-third innings. He allowed just two hits and no runs with three walks. Cayde Connelly covered the final five outs with four coming via punchout. Manheim used a tworun double by Nolan Book to take a 2-0 lead in the third while Brady Harbach tacked on an insurance run with a fifth inning single.
The Barons needed four pitchers to get through their April 6th loss to Township with the official loss going on Cael Martin’s record. He covered three innings, issuing five walks with three strikeouts leading to four of the Blue Streaks runs. Cole Lawhorne was up next, racking up four strikeouts and three walks over his three scoreless innings. Trevor Lowe was hit with the remainder of the Township runs, failing to record an out during Township’s five run seventh.
Chase Travitz relieved Lowe and quickly put the fire out but the damage had already been done. Book finished the game hitless but picked up an RBI thanks to a third inning sac fly. Harbaugh, Colin Neiles and Travitz accounted for Manheim’s three hits.
A sluggish start doomed Central in their 4-1 loss to
ELCO on the 12th with all four Raider runs coming in the first three innings. Connelly covered those three innings, taking the loss for surrendering five hits and those four runs. Lawhorne and Martin covered the final four innings, keeping ELCO scoreless while combining for two strikeouts and no walks.
Neiles plated the Baron run with his sac fly in the second, pushing Harbach across who was in scoring position thanks to Murray and his single hit. McGallicher and Ky Watson split the remaining two hits.
TRACK
‘A Tale of Two Cites’ is a famous novel by Charles Dickens, but the Manheim Central track team put their spin on things with a tale of two meets on April 11th. The Lady Barons cruised to a 116-34 win over Cocalico while the boys fell by a 78-72 final.
Maddie Knier led the usual cast of characters for the Lady Barons, taking her spot atop the high (5-2), long (16-7.25) and triple jumps (34-9) as well as the javelin with a toss of 130’. Laci Nelson and Chloe Enck finished the throwing sweep with Nelson taking the shot (36-1.5) and Enck the discus (105-3). Bella Sensenig wrapped up the field wins by topping the pole vault competitors by clearing 10’.
Milan Snell added three solo wins to her 1600m relay anchor leg with Abbie Reed, Sarah Forry and Liz Voegele helping to post a 4:22.3 Snell’s solo wins came in the 100m (12.6), 200m (26.6) and 400m (61.0) giving Central a
sweep in the sprints. Reed and Forry added two individual wins to their day with Reed claiming both the 100H (16.3) and the 300H (47.2) while Forry did her work in the 800m (2:42) and 1600m (5:46). Julia Lindberg seized the final solo win, topping the 3200m field with a 12:27. Lindberg and Forry were joined by Emma Herman and Reagan Ibach for a 3200m relay win.
The boys remained winless after their closest setback of the season. Landon McGallicher was the lone Baron to win multiple events, taking the 110H and 300H with times of 14.9 and 41.0, respectively. Cameron Evans and Carter Bruckhart each enjoyed a solo win on top of their 3200m relay victory. Evans claimed the 400m (54.9) while Bruckhart took the 3200m (11:33). Ryan Kenneff and Carson Brooks joined Evans and Bruckhart for that 3200m relay win, posting a 9:10.9. Manheim Central’s final two wins came in the field where Kahlen Watt took the long jump (19-3.5) and Wyatt Kupres the discus (140’).
TENNIS
The tennis team slipped a 3-2 win over Warwick between losses to Central York and McCaskey, leaving the Barons 5-8 heading to the finish line of the 2023 regular season. Ben Ginder posted the lone singles win during the April 10th victory over Warwick with Aaron Cassel and Landen Statts as well as Jon Breinich and Zach Spangler picking up doubles wins.
Manheim dropped the matches to Central York and McCaskey by identical 4-1 finals. The difference came in where the Barons picked up their team point. Against the Panthers on the 6th, it was Rodney Sauder taking his number three singles match but opposite McCaskey on the 11th it was the duo of Cassel and Statts that collected the win.
The Easter holiday and the break that comes with it allowed the boys’ volleyball team to take it easy with only a 3-0 win over Ephrata on the slate. Central had little trouble with the Mountaineers, opening with a 25-12 win before closing the match with back-to-back 25-16 wins.
Dylan Musser led the way with 24 assists, seven digs and two aces. Logan Groff matched those two aces while Landon Mattiace finished with seven kills.
The Lady Barons’ softball team stepped out of the L-L on April 11th battling South Western in a postponed game from March 27th. The result was a 20-1 loss that lasted five innings. Riley Hostetter opened in the circle for Manheim and took the loss after allowing 12 runs on 11 hits and one walk. Three Lady Baron errors gifted the Lady Mustangs seven unearned runs with six coming while Hostetter was on the mound. Paige Garner finished things up, absorbing the final eight
runs and 10 hits. Brianna Mylin picked up the lone RBI while Kayleigh Detz and Garner had one hit each.
The Lady Barons returned to the L-L for their April 12th clash with ELCO where Manheim enjoyed an offensive explosion in the 18-6 win.
Michaela Lauver was the spark, collecting three hits in her six at-bats, two of which were homeruns. She belted a three-run shot in the fourth and added a solo blast in the sixth. Detz had just one hit, but it was a good one in the form of a three-run bomb that came as part of an 11 run seventh inning. Hailey Peterson also finished with three RBI but did so with two singles.
Hostetter got the start but gave way to Garner in the fifth, leaving Garner with the win for her two and twothirds innings.
Central picked up another LL win on the 10th, posting an 83 final over Octorara. Mylin carried the big bat, smacking two doubles and driving in three runs. Detz, Hostetter, Garner and Brynn Lehman all finished with one RBI with Detz, Hostetter and Garner also collecting two hits. Hostetter missed out on a complete game but did get the win for her six innings of work. She allowed all three Lady Brave runs while mixing in four strikeouts. Garner cruised through the final frame on just eight pitches.
“They say if you want to succeed, it’s who you know,” said Deb Schleh, extolling the benefits of networking. “We believe it’s what you know and who you know.” Schleh, a member of the Friends of Donegal, said that’s the motivation behind
the Community Building Blocks Expo, an event designed to introduce the community to services available to everyone.
The expo will be held on Saturday, April 29, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. along Delta and Henry streets and inside the reception center at Sheetz Funeral Home, 16 E. Main St.,
Mount Joy. A rain date is scheduled for Saturday, May 6.
AME Therapist EVERY
As Schleh explained, the idea for the expo came from a community dinner held at the end of a Getting Ahead class offered by Friends of Donegal, a nonprofit created to be a one-stop shop to help close the gaps between needs and services in the community. “At the dinner, we invited people in from different organizations in the community,” she recalled, noting that Getting Ahead is a class designed to help people get ahead financially rather than just getting by. “Part of Getting Ahead is not only to help participants gain skills, but also to give back to the community. Out of the community dinner came the idea, ‘Why not do this on a larger scale?’”
The expo will feature a wide variety of nonprofit organizations and businesses, all geared toward providing services ranging from financial support to housing. Members of the Mount Joy Borough Police Department, EMS and fire department will be on-site as well.
Nancy Stehman, a member of the expo committee, said the Getting Ahead class opened her
eyes to community resources. “I realized I could make connections and build my social capital through networking,” she stated. “People might not realize there is free medical care. People might not have a good relationship with the police. Coming to the expo will give them the opportunity to come out and talk to the police, to learn about programs and services that could benefit them.”
Along with information tables, the expo will feature activities for people of all ages, Stehman said, adding, “ We’ll have fun and games, too. We’ll have food trucks. It’s a family event.”
A silent auction of items, including paintings by a local artist, themed baskets and gift cards to local businesses, will help cover the operational costs of Getting Ahead and its follow-up class, Staying Ahead.
