Four decades of Christ and community at WJTL 40 Fest

For four decades, WJTL has been a home for Christian programming, and the radio station wants to honor its legacy and longevity by giving back to the community. WJTL 40 Fest will be held on Saturday, May 18, at Cherry Crest Adventure Farm, 150 Cherry Hill Road, Ronks. The event will begin at noon and will wrap up with a headlining performance by Crowder, beginning at 8:15 p.m.

“We want everyone who listens to be encouraged, to find hope, and we believe all of those things are found in Jesus.”

“We wanted a day to celebrate our 40th anniversary and decided a festival lineup at an outside venue would create the type of event perfect for a celebration,” said Phillip Miller, event and facilities director. “I had been talking with Cherry Crest Adventure Farm since 2022 about using their facility for an outside concert, and we thought our 40th anniversary would be the perfect time to bring a great lineup of music to the property.”

The lineup for the festival includes Behold the Beloved, which will perform at 3 p.m.; Leanna Crawford, who will entertain at 4 p.m.; Rhett Walker, who will hit the stage at 5 p.m.; Cochren & Co, which will perform

at 6 p.m.; Danny Gokey, who will play at 7 p.m.; and Crowder, who will close out the evening. “40 Fest will be a day of family fun and great music focused on celebrating 40 years of living out our slogan, ‘Christ. Community. Music.’ Cherry Crest Adventure Farm will have their spring attractions open,” Miller shared. “We’re planning an event that everyone can enjoy, whether you’ve listened to WJTL since 1984 or 2024. 40 Fest will provide a fun day for all.”

WJTL’s story began in 1984, when the station was housed in a renovated chicken house across from Lancaster Bible College, recalled president Fred McNaughton.

“During this time, WJTL expanded its reach, going 24 hours and beginning to broadcast in stereo, while also engaging with the community through various events, including a popular weekly roller skate to contemporary Christian music,” he said.

By the mid-1990s, WJTL had moved to a new location on Oregon Pike. “WJTL also began inviting local organizations to the morning show to share their stories and promote their events,” McNaughton said.

In 2011, the station relocated to its current home at The Junction Center in Manheim. “The move to The Junction Center not only allowed WJTL to continue

The Manheim Historical Society marks its 60th anniversary this year, and you’re invited to the party. The organization will host a celebration on Sunday, April 21, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Manheim Railroad Station, 210 S. Charlotte St. Festivities will include tours of the museum, a panel discussion, and a presentation by Aimee Caya of LancasterHistory.

“The panel conversation is titled ‘Past, Present, and Future.’ The goal is to illustrate the 60 years since the founding of the historical society, the ways in which the community’s and society’s overall goals have evolved and been adapted to the preservation of Manheim’s history, and the strategic goals that will enable us to better engage and inform the public about the people, places, and events that shaped Manheim, Rapho

Township and Penn Township,” explained Peggy Cunha, chair of programs and services and special events coordinator for the society.

The Manheim Historical Society’s vice president, Wes Geib, will serve as moderator and will pose questions to the panel. Acting curator Linda Frey will discuss how the availability of computers has altered the

Heels, sneakers, dress shoes, boots, flats. All kinds of footwear.

Eve Kirchner likes shoes just as much as the next young person. But recently the Manheim Township resident developed a new and deeper appreciation for them.

Industrious Eve is waging her own personal shoe drive. It’s a mission whose nature is altruistic on a couple of different levels.

“This involves a lot of work,

and she’s learning responsibility in general,” said Antonella Kirchner, Eve’s mom. “When we heard about helping people around the world needing shoes, it struck at both of our hearts. That’s a big part of it. But it also involves a lot of organization. It’s almost like she’s had to learn how to run a small business. If we don’t keep up with it, it can be overwhelming.”

A homeschooled seventh-grader, Eve is collecting gently used shoes as part of a project that will raise money for

a Girl Scout trip to Hawaii, where she and other members of Troop 70674 - which meets at Grandview Church, 888 Pleasure Road, Lancaster - will perform more service projects. Eve’s collected shoes will go to Funds2Orgs, an international organization that supports small businesses by providing gently used shoes to sell.

“If I do this, I get to go to Hawaii, and that’s definitely a pro,” said Eve. “But we need people’s help to spread the word, just getting people to know about it. We need help to be able to reach our goal. We need the community to be part of our mission.”

Eve is employing a few different methods to collect the shoes.

In addition to using social media, she has placed empty bags on local residents’ doors and has set up drop-off boxes at four locations: Grandview Church; Popovsky Performing Arts Studio, 245 Butler Ave., Lancaster; Griddle & Grind Café, 20 W. Main St., Ephrata; and McKonly’s Garage, 3651 Horizon Drive, Mountville.

“A lot of people love shoes to match outfits,” said Antonella. “It’s estimated that 70% of the world depends on second-hand shoes and nearly 300 million people don’t even own shoes. We think that’s astounding. A simple pair of shoes protects feet. People need to walk places. It’s more than fashion; they’re used for practical purposes.”

Eve needs to collect 100 bags or a total of 2,500 pairs of shoes to make it to Hawaii. Since beginning the shoe drive on Feb. 26, she’s collected a lot of shoes, but she still has a long way to go before it ends on Friday, April 26.

“We’re tracking really close. We are tracking where we need to be,” said Antonella. “We need about 10 bags a week. If we can get (the message) in front of enough

people, it’s attainable. We do have the support of the other troop members.”

Eve joined Troop 70674 when she was 5 years of age, and she’s already been a Girl Scout for seven years.

“It’s nice to see what running a business would be like,” said Eve. “You have to work to get what you need. You have to organize stuff and work with other people. It’s just fun getting together with girls who are willing to care for other people.”

its community-focused approach, but it also provided a space to invite and host listeners and other community groups in new and engaging ways,” he said.

Through the years and all the changes, one thing is unchanged, he noted. “WJTL’s core mission has remained steadfast: to play great Christian music that inspires and challenges its listeners, to serve its community with all its heart and to honor the Lord Jesus Christ in all it does,” he said.

As for the next 40 years, listeners can expect to continue to hear the live voices of friends in the community, said Stacey Gagne, vice president of operations.

“We want everyone who listens to be encouraged, to find hope, and we believe all of those things are found in Jesus,” she stated. “In the next 40 years, we will continue to find new ways to connect with you and provide you with the great content that you expect from WJTL.”

Kids Fishing Derby will encourage outdoor fun

Fishing offers an opportunity for people to learn more about nature, try their luck and have fun. That’s the goal of the annual Kids Fishing Derby, hosted by the Donegal Fish and Conservation Association (DFCA). The event will be held on Saturday, April 13, at the reflecting pond on the grounds of Donegal Presbyterian

Church, 1891 Donegal Springs Road, Mount Joy, from 8 to 11 a.m. All youths age 11 and under as well as all handicapped anglers who possess a current Pennsylvania fishing license are invited to participate.

“The Fishing Derby is important to the Donegal Fish and Conservation Association because it gives local kids an opportunity to catch trout in an area that has been stocked with fish specifically for them,” said Scot Harlacher, DFCA volunteer, who added that more than 300 brook, rainbow, golden and brown trout will be available to catch. “Our hope is also that this event will create a bonding experience for kids with their family and friends. Fishing can also give children a reason to learn specific skills then have a chance for success by putting those skills into action.”

He’s hoping programs like the Fishing Derby encourage participants to pursue the pastime. “Many kids will enjoy learning about nature then wish to continue in outdoor activities as they get older,” he said. “Our ultimate goal is to teach and model the ideals of conservation and stewardship so that those values can be continued in the future.”

benefit the church’s annual mission trip to upstate New York.

“We have been running this (mission) project for about 25 years and expect to take about a dozen volunteers this year to work on several handicapped ramps for multiple families,” said Harlacher, who is also a member of the church. “We truly appreciate any donations for this effort because the funds help us with building materials, gas, food, etc., and allow us to have an immediate positive impact on the lives of a few needy families.”

The DFCA is a nonprofit organization dedicated to restoring the Donegal watershed to its original state. In cooperation with the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission, the DFCA has raised more than 3,000 trout annually since 1964 for stocking in the Donegal Creek.

“I encourage families to bring their kids to the Fishing Derby because they will have a reasonable chance to catch some trout,”

In addition to the Fishing Derby, Donegal Presbyterian Church will host a pancake breakfast that is open to the general public. The breakfast will be served from 7 to 11 a.m. in the church fellowship hall. Proceeds will

process of cataloging acquisitions and showcasing museum exhibits. Acquisitions chair Doug Shaw will talk about his search for historical artifacts from the past to the present. Burt Savitz will discuss the evolution of transferring historical images and events from print media to digital media. All three are longtime volunteers with the society, Cunha said. “A recent volunteer, Barb Horst, treasurer, will talk about the organization’s financial history and future financial objectives,” she shared. “James Denlinger, a 15-yearold in the model railroad exhibit, will discuss his motivation for volunteering at a young age.”

The panel discussion will begin at 1:30 p.m., followed by Caya’s talk at 2:15 p.m.

Caya, the director of library and research services for LancasterHistory, will discuss how to keep history alive. “She will show the audience how to preserve and archive family heirlooms, clothing, textiles, photos, and books in their own homes,” Cunha remarked.

Before and after the presentations, the public will be able to tour the railroad station, which features historic iron plates and glassware. “The 1881 station exemplifies society’s 19th-century values and ethics, with distinct waiting rooms for men, women, and families, as well as business technology,” Cunha said. People may also enjoy the model train display, and, weather permitting, trolley rides will be offered.

Refreshments will be served between presentations, and the Fasig and Keath German log homes, located at 30-32 E. Main St., will also be open for free tours and cupcakes.

Cunha emphasized that everyone can play a role in preserving history.

“I would encourage someone by first asking if they have ever wished they had more information about a memory that they do not fully recall and only a favorite relative who passed away would know,” she said.

Fishing from pg 5

Harlacher commented. “Even if you don’t intend to fish, it’s a great opportunity to be outside and watch how excited and happy the participants will be.¬†We do hold the event rain or shine, so please be prepared for the weather and cold temperatures.”

All fishermen must bring their own equipment and clean their own fish. DFCA members will be on hand

“Then I’d inquire whether they had any photos or artifacts that were left to them. People frequently respond positively to both of the preceding questions. That will open the door to wanting to learn about a place’s history and, by extension, connect to their own past. From there, it’s usually a short leap to learning how to safeguard their own history.”

Roberts to race for a cause

Jim Roberts of Mount Joy will compete in the 2024 One Lap of America, departing in early May. This year, he will have a new transit driver, his racing crew chief Joe Yacobenas from Lancaster. Yacobenas will help with the highway miles and maintaining the car, and Roberts will

do all the competitive driving on the tracks. The pair will use Roberts’ new orange Corvette and travel to race tracks in Indiana, Nebraska, Colorado, Missouri, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and back to Indiana in support of the Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition (PBCC).

Roberts and Yacobenas will travel about 3,700 miles for the event and almost 5,000 miles by the time Roberts arrives back home again in just over a week. Along the way, they will compete against about 90 other teams.

This will be Roberts’ 15th time competing in One Lap of America, and the last several years, he has raised funds for the PBCC. He now has raised more than $48,000 in total for PBCC, which uses the funds for research and to help support women who have breast cancer.

Donors will be honored with a sticker on the roof of Roberts’ Corvette. The sticker may bear the donor’s name or the name of someone the donor would like to honor or memorialize.

To make a donation by credit card, visit www .pabreastcancer.org/one -lap-of-america/. Donations will also be accepted at Jim Roberts’ West Main Auto, 14 W. Main St., Mount Joy.

To follow Roberts’ One Lap of America journey, visit http://onelap adventure.blogspot.com or search for “Jim’s One Lap Adventure” on Facebook.

The PBCC represents, supports, and serves breast cancer survivors and their families in Pennsylvania through educational programming, legislative advocacy, and breast cancer research grants. The PBCC is a statewide nonprofit organization dedicated to finding a cure. For more information, call 800377-8828 or visit www .pabreastcancer.org.
